We sit down with Jim Miller (The New School) to discuss Pedro Almodovar's challenging film TALK TO HER. And now for something completely different... featuring one of past guests & fellow authors Ace Atkins, Megan Abbott, & William Boyle's dearest friends. The first half of this week's episode with Oxford, Mississippi based ADVENTURE TIME & SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS screenwriter, voice actor, & author Jack Pendarvis is a freewheeling anything goes conversation about writing, shovels, William Faulkner cosplay, hitchhiking with butter knives, Saint Augustine, showers, & anything else that popped into our heads. Taking a look at two films about the creative process in the more classically Watch With Jen formatted second half of this discussion, we investigate two of Jack's favorite movies in director Anthony Mann's classic musical biopic THE GLENN MILLER STORY & one of Pedro Almodovar's greatest masterworks, PAIN AND GLORY. This season, I'm aiming to sprinkle in some more casual conversations with artists of all backgrounds into our traditional friendly analytic approach because right now, it feels like we're all so isolated, stressed, & wary that I'm hoping these occasional offbeat episodes might spark a little joy, discovery, & creativity for you along the way as well.Originally Posted on Patreon (4/7/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/126066237Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Hello everyone and welcome to an all new episode of Some Like It Scott! This episode rounds out the last movie review before the two Scotts finalize their Top 10 lists for 2024, and it is a review of the Spanish auteur, Pedro Almodovar's, first feature film in the English language: THE ROOM NEXT DOOR. After discussing Tilda Swinton's and Julianne Moore's performances, whether Almodovar's writing and style translate seamlessly to the English languages, and the rather dour themes of the film, the co-hosts turn their attention to give another outdated awards update regarding this year's guild nominees, as well as discuss the news that Greta Gerwig's upcoming Narnia film with Netflix will be receiving a theatrical release in IMAX theaters. Présentation : JulietteChroniqueur.euse.s : Pauline, Arthur & Julien

What does it take to turn a life of addiction and struggle into one of wisdom, compassion, and fulfillment? In this episode, Peter shares his extraordinary journey from the depths of heroin addiction in the 1960s counterculture to finding peace and purpose as a Zen Buddhist priest. Through his story, we explore the profound teachings of interconnectedness, the balance between individuality and the larger universe, and the transformative power of self-awareness. Peter's raw honesty and profound insights will inspire you to reflect on your own path and the narratives you may be living by. We also dive deep into the practical side of Zen—meditation techniques that anyone can try, the beauty of embracing impermanence, and how love and compassion can dissolve the boundaries we think separate us. Have you ever wondered if happiness is less about seeking and more about letting go? Or how understanding paradoxes can reveal your true nature? Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy are back to start 2025 with reviews…of a lot of 2024 movies. Albeit ones opening wider across the country now. But there are also some brand new releases including documentaries on a film that never was (George A. Romero's Resident Evil) and the songwriter who never wins an Oscar (Diane Warren: Relentless). Then a family is trapped amidst a pole reversal (Survive) and Adrien Brody tries to build a life in America (The Brutalist). Robbie Williams gets the musical biopic treatment as a chimpanzee (Better Man) while Julianne Moore & Tilda Swinton face a tough life together in Pedro Almodovar's latest (The Room Next Door). Pamela Anderson finds herself aging out in Vegas (The Last Showgirl) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste gives one of the year's best performances in the new film from Mike Leigh (Hard Truths). Film critic Emma Jones tells us why Nicole Kidman's latest role – as an executive who embarks on an affair with her intern – is perhaps more shocking for a Hollywood audience than a European one. Her performance in "Babygirl" won Kidman the best actress prize at the Venice Film Festival; we discuss some of the film's taboos and standout moments. We also go through some of the big winners at this year's Golden Globes, including French auteur Jacques Audiard for "Emilia Perez" and Demi Moore for "The Substance". Emma tells us why Adrien Brody and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres could be well placed to pick up Oscars, in addition to the acting prizes they won this week. Plus we take a look at Pedro Almodovar's touching study of friendship and mortality, as Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore shine in "The Room Next Door".

This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with author Sigrid Nunez. With her novels The Friend (winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction) and What Are You Going Through, New York–based author Sigrid Nunez has supplied the extraordinarily rich source material for not one, but two films in the NYFF62 lineup: Scott McGehee and David Siegel's Spotlight standout The Friend, starring Naomi Watts as a writer mourning the complicated loss of a beloved mentor; and Pedro Almodóvar's Centerpiece selection The Room Next Door, which follows another writer (Julianne Moore) as she reconnects with a friend from her past (Tilda Swinton) who approaches her with an unusual request. We were honored to welcome Nunez for a special conversation about her prismatic literary meditations on grief, friendship, and the passage of time; the experience of seeing her creative work adapted into other mediums; and cinema's alchemical capacity to both translate and transform a novel's meaning. This conversation was moderated by A.O. Scott, critic at large for The New York Times Book Review. A New York Times Critic's Pick, Pedro Almodovar's The Room Next Door is now playing at FLC. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/room NYFF Free Talks are presented by HBO.
Despite ongoing concern about teen internet use, young people are online as much as ever. A new Pew survey of nearly 1,400 teens found surprising results across gender, racial, and political lines. Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s latest film is “The Room Next Door” — a former war correspondent has terminal cancer, makes a plan to kill herself, and asks her old friend to help. Film critic Alonso Duralde recommends holiday movies: “See You Next Christmas,” “Better Watch Out, “1985,” and “Christmas, Again.”

To call Parish Malfitano's sophomore feature, Salt Along the Tongue, a straight up horror film feels like a disservice to the experience of watching this magnificent melodrama-adjacent film. Yes, there are most certainly horrific elements - blood features heavily throughout the film, upsetting tales about the symbiotic relationship between wasps and figs are told, bodies float in the air in unsettling ways, boils and scars emerge in haunting ways on the legs of characters, and of course, the thematic backbone of Italian witches that feature within the film - but Salt Along the Tongue instead feels more like a familial, motherly drama in the vein of Pedro Almodovar's work.Yet, even calling Salt Along the Tongue an homage to Alomdovar feels like it's doing a disservice to Parish's work here. This is, much like his first film, a distinct work syphoned from the mind of Parish Malfitano, and in the realm of Australian cinema, that is a blessing.Salt Along the Tongue follows Laneikka Denne's Mattia, a teen girl who struggles to find her place in the world being bullied at school and simply unable to be herself. It's a reality that's thrown into further turmoil when her mother unexpectedly dies, with Mattia having to move to live with her aunt, Carol (Dina Panozzo), who also happens to be her mothers identical twin. Yet, Carol is distinctly different than Matthia's mother, with her aunt having an exuberant personality that, when married with her complicated relationship with alcohol and the cooking show she records with her coven of friends, causes Matthia's life to shift in ways she doesn't know how to fully navigate. This is just the surface of what Parish is working with in Salt Along the Tongue, a film that features an almost completely women led cast, and acts as an ode to mothers and the hardships that men have put upon them in the world. Shot with a stunning colour palette that plays out at times like an aurora gracing through the sky, and at others like a freshly slaughtered chicken, blood dripping everywhere, Salt Along the Tongue is a film full of supreme confidence, driven by a vision to explore Parish's Italian heritage in an Australian setting. The co-lead of the film, Laneikka Denne, wisely said on Letterboxd that this does not feel like it was made in Australia in all the right ways, and they are completely right. There's a brilliance at work here that feels diametrically opposed to the projects that funding bodies in Australia are supporting. Parish is not working alone in this capacity, with filmmakers like Alice Maio Mackay and Alina Lodkina each exploring personal narratives within Australian cinema, and in doing so, these filmmakers are shifting what Australian cinema is.That notion of Australian cinema, as always, is embedded in my conversations with filmmakers, and the following discussion with Parish, recorded ahead of the films launch at SXSW Sydney on 18 & 19 October, explores his relationship with Australian cinema, his drive to tell stories that he wants to see on screen, and his journey through the creative process of making Salt Along the Tongue. While this conversation goes for fifty minutes, I feel like we barely scratched the surface of what's at play within this vividly realised and sensorially invigorating film. So, with that said, if you're in Sydney, head along and see the film on 18 or 19 October. It looks like the 18th is sold out, so jump on board for the 19th if you can. Make sure to seek out Parish's previous film, Bloodshot Heart, which is available on demand. And if you want to find out more about Parish's work head over to ParishMalfitano.com. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Erik Childress spent six days at this year's Toronto Film Festival and is here to dish on a bunch of the films he saw. They include the latest works from Francis Ford Coppola, Pedro Almodovar, Ron Howard and Sean Baker. Films about the aging plight of women in entertainment with Demi Moore, Elisabeth Moss and Pamela Anderson run the gamut from great to dismal. The Vatican and religion have their share of bad guys too. Erik splits his votes on a pair of relationship dramas as well as films about Press Your Luck and Saturday Night Live. Nicole Kidman and Amy Adams handle their unsatisfying home lives in wildly different manners. Plus, the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan wins both the festival's Audience Award as well as Erik's heart. The Third Part in our Mask of the Doctor Trilogy We finish our trilogy on masks of doctors (although that comes into question by the end of the episode) by starting with comparing our podcast to FRIENDS or SEINFELD and every other podcast is the 9:30 sitcom that everyone hate watched until ER started. In some regard THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is seen as maybe the misfire of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy... although that is not backed up financially or critically. It's just a vibe! And that's also the answer by the end of the episode in how this film stands alongside the works of Stanley Kubrick and Pedro Almodovar. Enjoy it! All of it!
