fWotD Episode 2718: The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 13 October 2024 is The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9)."The Riddle of the Sphinx" is the third episode of the third series of the British dark comedy anthology television programme Inside No. 9. It first aired, on BBC Two, on 28 February 2017. The episode was written by the programme's creators, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, and directed by Guillem Morales. "The Riddle of the Sphinx", which is set in Cambridge, stars Alexandra Roach as Nina, a young woman seeking answers to the Varsity cryptic crossword, Pemberton as Professor Nigel Squires, who pseudonymously sets the crossword using the name Sphinx, and Shearsmith as Dr Jacob Tyler, another Cambridge academic. The story begins with Nina surreptitiously entering Squires's rooms on a stormy night and being discovered; this leads to Squires teaching her how to decipher clues in cryptic crosswords. The plot of "The Riddle of the Sphinx" revolves around the clues and answers to a particular crossword puzzle. The idea to focus an episode on crosswords came from Pemberton; he had long been a fan of cryptic crosswords, but particular inspiration came from Two Girls, One on Each Knee: The Puzzling, Playful World of the Crossword, a non-fiction book by Alan Connor. The crossword featured in "The Riddle of the Sphinx" was set by Pemberton, and was published in The Guardian on the day the episode aired, credited to "Sphinx". This crossword contains multiple ninas—hidden messages or words. Along with many of the crossword's answers, one nina is integral to the episode's plot. A second was introduced accidentally, and then incorporated into the episode. A third nina is an Inside No. 9 in-joke.Influences for "The Riddle of the Sphinx", which emphasises gothicism over comedy, include Anthony Shaffer's 1970 play Sleuth, the work of Anton Chekhov, and the 1989 film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Critics responded extremely positively to the episode, lauding its writing and the precise attention to detail in the production. Commentators noted that the episode was very dark, and probably the cleverest episode of Inside No. 9 to date. Roach's performance was praised, as was the direction of Morales. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:43 UTC on Sunday, 13 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

The Middle East is becoming more and more unstable and Biden has seemingly lost the plot.  So who better to have on than Lt Col Tony Shaffer to make sense of it all.  Since the start of the Israel Gaza war we have seen increasing skirmishes in the Red Sea, attacks on cargo ships and now we are seeing an escalation of military responses, not only from the US but joint operations with the UK and others as well.  Tony tells us what is behind this Biden failure of US national security policies.  Are they leading us all towards another world war? Why are we seeing increasing attacks from the Houthi's in Yemen? Why are we seeing US and UK jets attack not only the Houthi's but Iranian backed militants in Iraq? Where does Saudi Arabia fit into all of this? And how will the situation change under a Trump Presidency?  So many questions and Lt Col Shaffer is the man with the answers. Why did Bush/Cheney order the destruction of all US Army investigation data on Al Qaeda terrorists pre-9/11?! We speak directly with Lt. Colonel Anthony Shaffer, (US Army, Ret.) about his role in the US Army data mining project Able Danger which uncovered 2 Al Qaeda terrorist cells that were already being “infiltrated” (recruited?) by the CIA. We'll get to the bottom of what really happened with Tony - and what he thinks about the 22-page bombshell sworn testimony of Guantanamo defense investigator Don Canastraro, which points indelibly to CIA complicity—at least in actively shielding two would-be hi-jackers and their Saudi-intelligence handler from the FBI's awareness, and spying on the FBI — but in “infiltrating” the hi-jackers, and potentially exposing much greater involvement in 9/11. It's all coming to light. And, Tony Shaffer worked with Canastraro for ten years, so we're getting lots of insight here. Our Guest on RichardGage911:UNLEASHED! is Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer (Retired). He is the President of the London Center for Policy Research, a New York Times bestselling author, and CIA trained intelligence operations officer with 35  years of experience in global and national security. He became a Senior Intelligence Officer (Operations) and created Task Force STRATUS IVY that conducted the full spectrum of support to Department of Defense, Special Operations Command and other non‐ DoD agencies. This included support to the controversial counterterrorism project known as ABLE DANGER – a pre‐9/11 offensive operation suite designed to detect, degrade and counter Al Qaeda capabilities. In 2001, just after the 9/11 attacks, he was returned to active duty for a 30-month period, during which he commanded a DIA special mission operating base (OB Alpha) and had two successful combat tours to Afghanistan. On today's episode, we're donning our police outfits, getting in our seaplane, and heading out to Sommerisle to look for a missing girl and revisit one of the all-time classic cult horror films, The Wicker Man (1973). This movie was directed by Robin Hardy and written by Anthony Shaffer. This movie stars Edward Woodward (Breaker Morent, Hot Fuzz, EastEnders), Christopher Lee (The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, Sleepy Hollow), Britt Eckland (The Man with the Golden Gun, The Monster Club, The Love Boat), and Diane Cilento (The Third Secret, Duet for Four, The Boy Who Had Everything). This is one of the foundational films for what is considered "Folk Horror" and has influenced horror as a whole. The story behind this film getting made is crazy (the negatives of this film are pretty much lost forever), but it's an absolute must-watch for any horror fan.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Frenzy is a 1972 British horror / thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock (aged, at time of production, 71). It is the penultimate feature film of his extensive career. The screenplay, centred on a serial killer in contemporary London and the ex-RAF serviceman he implicates, was written by Anthony Shaffer, based on the 1966 novel Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by Arthur La Bern, who, in a letter to the Editor of The Times, said he found Hitchcock's production and Shaffer's adaptation of his book “appalling”. The film stars Jon Finch, Alec McCowen, and Barry Foster and features Billie Whitelaw, Anna Massey, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, Bernard Cribbins and Vivien Merchant.Produced the year before, the curse of 1971 continued unabated as, along with poor Peter Cushing wife's demise, Hitchcock's wife and long-time collaborator Alma had a stroke during production. As a result, some sequences were shot without Hitchcock on the set, so he could tend to his wife.Michael Caine was Hitchcock's first choice for the role of Rusk, the main antagonist, but Caine thought the character was disgusting and said "I don't want to be associated with the part." Foster was cast after Hitchcock saw him in Twisted Nerve (which featured Frenzy co-star Billie Whitelaw).Helen Mirren, who later in life played Hitchcock's wife Alma Reville in Hitchcock, met with the director to discuss the role of Babs Milligan. Eventually she rejected the role, and years later said she regretted doing so.Henry Mancini who was originally hired as the film's composer, is quoted as saying,"If the same film was made ten years ago it would've had twice the amount of music in it", After an enigmatic, behind-the-scenes melodrama, where Hitch was reported to have yelled "If I had wanted Bernard Herrmann, I would have hired him!" the composer was fired and replaced by Ron Goodwin. The tag line for this movie was "Hitchcock's Last Masterpiece!" This line would be prophetic, since this is now considered to be the last masterwork Alfred Hitchcock produced in his canon.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Disaster Artists: The Post-Apocalyptic Podcast

This week we have an appointment to keep... with The Wicker Man.   The Wicker Man is a 1973 cult British horror film directed by Robin Hardy and starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Christopher Lee. The screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual, centers on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practice a form of Celtic paganism.    The film is well-regarded by critics and has been described as "The Citizen Kane of horror movies". In 2006, a poorly received (and ill-conceived) American remake was released starring Nicholas Cage, which Hardy and others involved with the original dissociated themselves from. In 2011, a spiritual sequel directed by Hardy entitled The Wicker Tree was released and featured Lee in a cameo appearance.   Support the Show & get access to exclusive episodes at https://www.patreon.com./DisasterArtists   Find us at all these other places: https://linktr.ee/DisasterArtists

Since its release in 1973, Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man has exerted a profound influence on the development of horror cinema, a rich vein of folk music, and the modern pagan revival more generally. Anthony Shaffer's ingenious screenplay gives us a thrilling yarn that is also a meditation on the nature of religious belief and practice. Just in time for Halloween, Phil and JF discuss the philosophical ideas that undergird this folk horror classic, focusing on the perennial role of sacrifice in religious thought.

In this episode we welcome Richard Grove to the show. Richard Grove excelled during his time in the public schooling system. As an entrepreneur, he launched his first business before graduating college;and that experience provided him with the necessary leverage to land a six-figure salaried position as an enterprise software account manager, servicing the world’s largest companies upon graduation. Despite his impressive resume and successful career in Information Technology servicing Fortune 100 companies and National Security Contractors, having earned his first million dollars before age 30, Richard soon bumped up against reality; for which his years of schooling did not prepare him. Richard was thrust into an unknown world, where he discovered that the true nature of the corporate world is not one of integrity, voluntary relationships, honest dealing, nor accountability. Specifically, in 2001, Richard was an account executive servicing his client Marsh & McLennan companies, and worked within the area which used to occupy the 96th through 99th floors of World Trade Center One. Surviving the catastrophe of the morning of September 11th, which is comprehensively described in Richard’s 2006 public disclosure message titled “Project Constellation: A Message to the Future of America”, he continued to work in his chosen profession, servicing the world’s largest financial clients in New York City. In 2003, Richard witnessed events which were to have wide-spread effects across companies and individuals (the seeds of the 2007 subprime mortgage meltdown), and took the steps which led to him becoming a corporate whistleblower under the 2001 Sarbanes-Oxley Act, not realizing at the time that he would be terminating his career as a consequence. He soon discovered that the court system, SEC, and corporate media worked together to block the public from hearing about whistleblower testimony; representing himself in court against a multi-billion-dollar international corporation, as detailed in the film 20/20 Hindsight: CENSORSHIP on the Frontline. What may have sounded like conspiracy “theories” in 2006 (Data-Mining and Spying on Citizens, The Planning of Financial Catastrophes, NSA/Google, and Corporate Media partaking in the demolition of our civil liberties), proves today to be relevant and verifiable historical facts related by Richard during his public disclosure via Project Constellation, and evident in his continued productions ever since. Since then, Richard and his fiancée Lisa, have been tirelessly researching and documenting the existing artifacts and evidence of world history; whereby they then produce educational films and podcasts, and together host the Tragedy & Hope online research community. Tragedy and Hope dot com, is named of course after the 1966 book by professor Carroll Quigley titled “Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time”. The purpose of Tragedy and Hope dot com and the book of the same name are practically synonymous, where Quigley leaves off in his brilliant discussion of the history and inter-workings of the elite ruling class and our non-elected leaders; T&H picks up and continues fleshing out how the world really works, and how all of us can learn to think more clearly about it. Tragedy and Hope creates, produces, and publishes educational content to help adults understand the world they live in and thereby, develop true self-confidence and serenity of mind; our content focuses on history, philosophy, economics, anthropology, science, communications, and every topic which pertains to learning how to survive and thrive in this world. In 2009 Richard launched the Peace Revolution, a “beyond Ph.D.” curriculum presenting the history and substantial artifacts of how the world *really* works. In 2011 Richard and Lisa, with a little help from their friends produced “The Ultimate History Lesson: A Weekend with John Taylor Gatto”; released 2012. In May of 2012 Mark Gaffney published his essential book “Black 9/11: Money, Motive and Technology”, which features the testimony of Richard Grove, as introduced into evidence during his trial as a whistleblower. In January of 2013 Richard launched “History… So It Doesn’t Repeat“, a video series hosted on YouTube to provide the audience with the primary sources, strategies, and tactics of Cognitive Liberty. In June of 2013 Tragedy and Hope and Free Mind Films released “State of Mind: The Psychology of Control“, available exclusively in the InfoWars.com Store; featuring Richard Grove, Alex Jones, G. Edward Griffin, Jon Rappoport, Dr. Colin Ross, Dr. Bruce Levine, Dr. Eldon Taylor, and Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, among others.   Peacerevolution.org tragedyandhope.com Link to web brain discussed on the show. https://webbrain.com/brainpage/brain/D36749F1-3A40-09FA-957F-41294B88CB70#-744
