In 1996, mild mannered mattress salesman Howard Langston must get a specific Xmas present for his son Jamie. Of course, the toy is sold out and hilarity and hijinks ensue as Howard goes on a chaotic journey throughout the Twin Cities in Minnesota. 1996's Jingle All the Way stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as a detached father and husband who constantly disappoints his wife and son. This week, Rob, Kurt and Dave will go over this Christmas “classic” and see if the laughs and sight gags still hold up almost 30 years later. Will this workaholic dad and husband save the day and realize what's most important? Or, will he actually learn nothing, be rewarded for being a terrible person and continue to live his crazy life? We'll look at that plus the theme of capitalism and commercialism at Christmas all wrapped up in a shiny holiday package. Turbo Man may be the real winner, but we're left wondering why no one called CPS!   Pandora: https://pandora.app.link/iq8iShjXOLb   Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/id1662282694    Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11dk5TUoLUk4euD1Te1EYG?si=b37496eb6e784408    Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/1960c8f9-158d-43ac-89a6-d868ea1fe077/totally-80s-and-90s-recall    YouTube Podcasts: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH9lGakNgCDZUkkHMUu88uXYMJu_33Rab&si=xo0EEVJRSwS68mWZ   Contact Us: Website: https://totally80s90srecall.podbean.com/  Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com LinkTree:https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall

Who said you could eat my cookies!?"Jingle All the Way" is a festive family comedy that takes audiences on a humorous and chaotic ride through the bustling streets of Minneapolis during the Christmas season. Directed by Brian Levant and released in 1996, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Howard Langston, a workaholic dad determined to secure the elusive Turbo-Man action figure for his son Jamie, played by Jake Lloyd.Set on Christmas Eve, the story unfolds as Howard realizes he has forgotten to purchase Jamie's most coveted Christmas gift, the Turbo-Man doll. What follows is a madcap adventure through crowded malls, toy stores, and holiday chaos as Howard faces the relentless pursuit of the Turbo-Man toy, which has become the must-have item of the season. As Howard encounters equally desperate shoppers, including the persistent and competitive postal worker Myron, portrayed by Sinbad, the film satirizes the extreme lengths people go to during the holiday shopping frenzy. The narrative not only serves up a hilarious commentary on the commercialization of Christmas but also delves into the importance of family and being present during the holiday season. The comedic journey reaches its climax during the Turbo-Man Parade, a spectacle that combines slapstick humor with heartwarming moments. Ultimately, "Jingle All the Way" delivers a blend of physical comedy, memorable quotes, and a touching exploration of the true meaning of Christmas, making it a beloved and enduring holiday classic.Check out the merch:  http://shop.backinthedaypodcast.comFriends of the Show1 Man Mafia (twitch.tv/1man_mafia)Jayke The Gamer God (twitch.tv/JaykeTheGamerGod)IB Best Gaming (https://www.tiktok.com/@ibbestgaming)Intro for the shopSupport the show'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford

Hooray it's December, time for holiday movies! From 1996, Jingle All the Way finds Arnold Schwarzenegger as "bad dad" Howard Langston, a workaholic mattress salesman who drops the Christmas ball, if you will, by forgetting to get his son Jamie the coveted Christmas toy of the season - Turbo Man. Christmas chaos ensues as Howard spends Christmas Eve on the hunt for the elusive toy, and will do whatever it takes to fulfill his son's Christmas wish! Also starring Rita Wilson, Phil Hartman, Jake Lloyd and Sinbad as the unhinged mailman nemesis also looking a Turbo Man for his son. We'll talk about some quintessential 90s thangs (Suburbans! Jingle All the Way, as silly and over-the-top as it may be, is actually quite a hysterical look at the insanity of Christmas-time consumerism. It's the time of year when parents across the country will literally stop at nothing to secure that one toy their child cannot live without. Though it is not a great film, it is a heck of a lot of fun. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as the workaholic mattress salesman Howard Langston, relishes the chance to play a normal guy. He's having fun, so in turn, we—the viewers—cannot help but giggle at the lunacy of it all, too. Sinbad, who portrays fellow desperate shopper and deranged mailman Myron Larabee, is also clearly enjoying himself.  Their interplay, bonkers game of one-upmanship, and excellent cast of co-stars elevates what is rather mediocre material. One such complimentary piece is the late, and eternally great, Phil Hartman; his turn as the wonderfully sleazy single-parent neighbor of Langston's, Ted, is a welcome reminder of his comedic genius. Those reasons, I believe, are why the movie has endured and why it made money upon its release in November of 1996. On a budget of $60 million, it made nearly $130 million worldwide, defying the critics who lambasted it as a "slapstick yuk-fest" (that comes according to the Critics' Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes). And you, dear readers and listeners, should watch it, too! Tis' the season, after all! So sit back, pour yourself a Festivus Spiced Brown Ale from Full Pint Brewing, and put that freshly baked cookie down (now!) as I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt Cash, and Chumpzilla fight through the havoc of holiday shopping to pursue an oddly shaped doll! Today’s special guest is Charlie Mihelich (Catharsis: Dramatic Improv & Purgatory) and he comes on to talk about The Terminator movies! Cassi had to sit down to watch “The Terminator 1” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” before podcasting with Charlie because she had never seen them before. Turns out, she loves them! Seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator and not Howard Langston from “Jingle All the Way” really changed her opinion about him. He’s a total badass as The Terminator! Charlie gets down to business and talks about his love for The Terminators movies and why the newest one, “Terminator Genisys”, is the worst. They talk about the career of rags-to-$1.79 billion-net-worth-riches James Cameron and how “Avatar” and “Titanic” are the top two highest grossing movies of all time. James Cameron directed both films along with “Terminators 1 & 2”, “Aliens”, “The Abyss”, “True Lies”, etc. His married life is not so great but Cassi takes time up top to talk about why all the women he’s been married to are total badasses especially film producer Gale Ann Hurd and film director, Kathryn Bigelow. James Cameron was also briefly married to Linda Hamilton, the actress who orginiated Sarah O’Conner. The talk of the Terminator movies also gets Charlie and Cassi talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger running for California state governor while shooting “T3: Rise of the Machines”, alternative casting like OJ Simpson was originally considered for the role of the Terminator and Arnold was going to play Kyle Reese. They also talk about the other actors in the film like Linda Hamilton, Edward Fulong, Michael Biehn and the late, great Bill Paxton. Other fun topics include Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Star Wars, Harrison Ford crashing airplanes, Indiana Jones, Rocky and other aging heroes, Shia LaBeouf, Miles Teller and Red Letter Media.
