This episode contains: We three hosts are here! Ben's wife is having another birthday, but don't worry it's not 40 gifts over 40 days all over again. She wants to have a “Fat Girl Sunday” (not a Sundae) where she eats and drinks with friends, super chill. Ben's happy to be a cabana boy for it. Devon starts talking about food and now we're hungry... but I guess we have to record a podcast! Steven's youngest had her birthday party, and I guess they're not little kids any more. What will you miss when you don't have little kids around? Birthdays during the summer are tough, but around our parts, Hops Bounce House has got you covered (what's up Hops!). Steven's got a secret 3d printing project (TELL US STEVEN), but instead of talking about secrets Steven's 3d printed some props for some Ahsoka cosplay, and I guess he's watching Black Sails. Ben makes a clever Starz joke. Ben and Devon wax poetic about One Piece (is it really just Farscape?). Ben prefers the anime of One Piece to the live action, though he's watched 60 episodes of the anime and 1 episode of the adaptation... maybe a larger sample size is needed. Ben's super excited for season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix this week. https://trekmovie.com/2024/06/30/catch-up-on-star-trek-prodigy-with-season-1-recap-and-season-2-preview/ Let's go way back: The Acolyte episodes 1-5. Steven's gotta talk about Star Wars, and we're here for it. There was a great Red Letter Media review about The Acolyte's first five episodes and you should watch it... maybe after you finish this episode. After watching that Red Letter Media review, Devon's intrigued and might actually watch... Farscape (DO IT! but wasn't this about The Acolyte?). The Acolyte is something new for Star Wars, which can be rare in this day and age. Forget the haters. Live long and prosper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-6WBWmoVEY Multiverse of Madness: In defense of Madame Web. Imagine the Spiderverse with dialogue written by Tommy Wiseau, which actually isn't that bad, especially when compared with other superhero stinkers (looking at you every Fantastic Four film so far). Ben and his eleven year old really enjoyed the campiness of Madame Web, and we're kinda bummed they're not gonna make the sequels they were totally setting up. Book Club: The Black Pages by Nnedi Okorafor (part of Amazon's Black Stars collection of scifi short stories). A solid 4 out of 4 stars this week, but was it scifi? Or was it modern mythology? A djinn is reborn into an iPad app after her book is burned in an al-Qaeda raid on an ancient library, and the boy carrying the iPad is now way in over his head. This story has got so much going for it in 31 pages, and y'all should read it if you haven't already. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098T11H5Qhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58647675-the-black-pages In two weeks, Book Club will return with a longer novella. We'll be reading All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. https://www.amazon.com/All-Systems-Red-Murderbot-Diaries/dp/0765397536
Hosts: TJ, Jo, & special guest Derek Crabbe This week on the show: Segment One: (0:00:00) (0:02:57) Derek's getting barraged by FB bots. (0:08:36) Derek takes TJ to task on his review of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. Then, two old men start going on about the good old days… (0:16:25) TJ hates on the local theater for not doing any of the special events, Derek does love going to the special anime, and Jo does go to the opera. (0:29:30) Re-dubs on anime causes TJ damage with different pronunciations of name. Derek is getting damaged by Warner's needless animation retellings. (0:44:43) Derek attempts to help TJ solve some computer audio recording issues. Excitement abounds! (0:49:58) Plus, TJ gives a big announcement! Segment two (0:59:27): (1:04:33) FGS brings us a wonderful tale of a former Chik-Fil-A employee performing an exorcism on a former co-worker with nothing but a CD and virtue in his heart. A bloody good time! (1:18:18) HOT TAKES kicks off with THE GRIM REAPER ROUND UP looking back at the NBA logo and a songwriter legend. (1:21:30) What initially was intended as coverage on the debacle that is the new Star Wars show, The Acolyte, instead leads into TJ and Derek going full grumpy old man on the current state of entertainment and media. - Algorithm pandering is atrocious. - Divisiveness in current movie storytelling is making Derek feel like Bugs Bunny watching Elmer and Yosemite Sam argue - Red Letter Media's discussion on the demise of theaters and YouTubes B.s. stance on blocking review videos with clips. - The beauty of the unifying experience of ‘80s movies that didn't have agendas. - Star Wars has died twice for both Derek and TJ (but not in the same instances). - X-Men ‘97 blasted through storylines way too quick. - The magic of introducing something you love to someone you love. - Remember when long ass movies had intermissions? - TJ and Derek are different sides of the same coin. Segment Three (2:24:46): (2:26:56) A Krissy-less KRAZY KORNER features a quiz celebration the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters! (2:47:12) PICKS O' THE WEEK! Stupid clouds! It's THE QUAD M SHOW!!!

Met with ambivalence by most, genuine revulsion by others upon its initial release in the summer of 1999, the film (and the prequel trilogy more broadly) have seen a continued reappraisal, especially in the era of so many soulless Disney-era Star Wars productions. The Phantom Menace is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary with a recent limited re-release on IMAX screens. On this episode, we make a case for the film not just as comparatively good, but a genuinely excellent entry in the Star Wars canon. We discuss the film's place within the the decade-spanning saga as well as its position within the film landscape of the era - how it pushed the boundaries of digital effects integration, and signaled (in non-alarmist terms) an evolving style of blockbuster filmmaking. Then, we talk about the film's narrative highs and lows, and share our thoughts on the critical points of 25 years of criticism: Midi-chlorians, Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd, Watto and more. Finally, we praise the film's many incredible formal qualities - its relationship to Lucas's early student films visual experiements, The Phantom Menace's debt to classic cinema greats like Kurosawa and Douglas Sirk, and the brilliance of the film's multi-phase finale, cross-cutting between four different theaters of action seamlessly.Follow Neil Bahadur on Twitter and LetterboxdWatch 'The Beginning: Making Start Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace'Watch '1:42:08 To Qualify', George Lucas's 1966 short film....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Today on the 5: Thanks to a pretty positive review in one of the recent Red Letter Media episodes, I followed up They Live By Night with something radically different. Today's review is for 2023's Aporia, a very well made movie about the ethics and fallout that can come from tampering with time.

Lately it feels like everything we love is on hiatus: Night Vale, Lore Olympus, Saga, it's all on break. So that means we've got time to go watch some of the amazing movies that've come out lately, right? AHAHAHA no of course not, we're terrible at movies. Instead we're wading through Book of Boba Fett (can't quite recommend it) and Andor (definitely recommend but wow is it dark) and losing our minds about the Loki season two trailer. (Cue the fangirl SQUEEEEEE it's going to be so good!) And because we are the way we are, we also wander into tangents like the stupid Twitter is now X nonsense, Red Letter Media's Spitballs pilot, Zero Punctuation, Midnight Mass, the writer's strike, the existential threat of AI, and people wanting to make TV less compelling so it won't interfere with our doomscrolling. First though we had to talk a little bit about the passing of Paul Reubens, and tell the story of how he became friends with our parents. RIP, Paul, thank you for the lamp. This week's movie is one that we have actively avoided since 2016. This week, we are tackling, with the help of Dustin and Nathan of The Silver Lining's Playlist Podcast, 2011's Jack & Jill. A movie so bad that it hurts our brains. Why does this movie suck so bad you might ask? Could it be the fact that Adam Sandler plays a female version of himself who's running gag is farting and pooping in every scene? Could it be the MASSIVE amounts of product placement that make this film feel like the bumper of a Nascar race car? Or could it be the sheer level of racist stereotypes and jokes that weren't ok in 2011 let alone in 2023? Well swig some Pepto Bismal folks, cause this one is gonna be a bumpy ride. ...And, we're back. Andruw is still busy pinning and body-slamming people (for his high school wrestling team, not just random people on the street). But, this week, we are joined by friend and special guest host, Preston. Together, we review a movie the three of us watched on New Year's Eve -- the DCEU film "Black Adam." - How many hours does this movie seem to last? - Being a huge fan of Justice Society of America from the comics, how did Preston feel the movie handled that team? - Which co-host compared Khandaq to Wakanda and Eternium to Vibranium? - In how many other ways do the co-hosts compare the DECU to the MCU, in general? - Which co-host was annoyed by several action scenes feeling like music videos? - Which co-host(s) had issues with the movie's pacing and/or structure? - Which co-host felt the movie has several moments of bait-and-switch? - What did the co-hosts feel about the villains in the movie? - How/why did this movie have a zombie army, on top of everything else? - What common superhero/sci-fi trope was actually impressively missing from this movie...until it wasn't? - Which co-host is a fan of Red Letter Media on YouTube (actually, at least two co-hosts are fans of RLM, but one co-host name-drops them specifically)? - Making his first appearance on the podcast, which unique grading system does Preston use? - Which person who sort of watched the movie with us -- but isn't on the podcast -- asked, "Is this movie ever going to end?" - Were the co-host's scores for the movie more harsh or more lenient than expected? - What are the co-host's suggestions for a better DC movie universe? - And, which topic was randomly rolled for an upcoming episode? Listen now for the answers to these other questions as we rise up in defiance of..."Black Adam." The Dog of War. (https://screenrant.com/star-trek-dog-war-ds9-sequel-new-series/) Poets nearly burned Ben at the stake for suggesting to use A.I. to help write. Is writing music performed by a computer similar to A.I. generated art? Devon rocks too loud at night when he's recording music. Rock finds a way. Is it weird when a composer can write a song they cannot play? Devon muses. Is there any difference in using a thesaurus vs. having an A.I. help write? How do solos get affected when nobody is playing the song? Check out Riffusion, generating music from text using visual sonograms. (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/12 riffusions-ai-generates-music-from-text-using-visual-sonograms/) What is a solo for? Steven says it's about emotional peaks. When describing a group of cyborgs AND androids: Try the term "macheeple".
Ho ho, ho, Merry Kick-mas (and yes I'm aware I stole that title from Red Letter Media but hey, whatcha gonna' do)As the title suggests this episode is covering Muay Thai and kickboxing only, as Daniel Rodriguez took his record to a perfect 38-0 in his second win over the legend Yodwicha on 23rd December, and Rise and Glory pitted some of their best against each others on Jesus' birthday. As promised here are the two excellent bouts between Rodriguez and Yodwicha:First fightSecond fight (highest recommendation from me, you should check it out!)And if you like the sound of the bonus material I mentioned at the end of the podcast please consider checking out the Combat Chronicles Patreon Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/combat-chronicles. Together, we will devour the godsssssss! Praetor Rykard had some good ideas. Let's try Volcano magic. Maybe the Golden Order is corrupt. His decision to let a snake eat him though, that might be questionable. The Elden Dogs are joined by the fantastic Jack Packard for this episode. Original broadcast date December 21, 2022. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/12/binary-system-podcast-342-lore-olympus-223-and-224 Happy Holidays from the Binary System Podcast team! This year one of our Christmas presents is some very welcome Lore Olympus backstory on Aphrodite (Ares is his own worst enemy, and for Aphrodite's sake we hope the breakup takes). Elizabeth is also happy to report that the latest season of The Crown is well worth a watch (and this led to a digression about the current royal family and why we think the sheer rage directed at one of its members is…weird.) Meanwhile Kathryn is happy to report that she's still enjoying the rewatch of the Hawkeye series and some older episodes of Red Letter Media instead of…all the other things she could be catching up on. We still haven't seen the new Avatar movie, so we're gonna have to get on that. Later. When the crowds aren't so awful. (PSA: Please be kind to the movie theater employees. And Avatar doesn't have a post-credits scene. You're welcome. Go home.) One day we may find a better Christmas outro than Christmas on Mars by spinningmerkaba, but today is not that day! Original broadcast date July 21, 2022. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/07/binary-system-podcast-323-and-getting-ready-for-sdcc/ It's a short-ish episode this week since we're mostly talking about episodes 203 and 204 of Lore Olympus and the pace is moving fast. No spoilers, but one of our predictions at the end of the last episode was right, and we're both very glad that Persephone is facing down a stupefyingly powerful insane god and former tyrant and not, you know, Apollo. Welcome to Night Vale is still on hiatus, which means next week we'll probably have a TV catch-up episode. To get ready for that we talked for a bit about where we are with The Umbrella Academy, Peaky Blinders, Russian Doll, and then digress for a bit about the Red Letter Media guys and why we think a re-watch of Twin Peaks: The Return is always a good idea. Oh, and as of time this episode drops we'll be a day into THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF SAN DIEGO COMIC CON. So definitely be on the lookout for some posts about that because the Pixelated Geek team is going to be taking all the photographs. This week's outro is a clip from Dear Mr Super Computer by HoliznaCC0. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Want to buy them (or yourself) a square foot of a castle in Scotland? Get ready to be inside joy this week as we finally reach the first TNG film: "Star Trek: Generations"!Mikanhana of Sailor Noob and Just Enough Trope returns to the show this week to discuss the Next Generation crew's first foray onto the big screen. When the Enterprise-D responds to an innocent distress call, her crew finds themselves drawn into an interstellar conspiracy with a deadly purpose. Picard must literally race against time to save his crew and prevent more destruction and he'll need the help of a long "dead" Starfleet legend...Captain James T. Kirk! The TOS series of films had its ups and downs, but it went out about as well as it possibly could with the excellent Star Trek VI. Now, it was a new crew's turn to take the reins. A crew who had proven popularity on the small screen but was yet untested at the box-office. What began as a possibly calculated move--the inclusion of former franchise star William Shatner in the film--became instead a unique and rewarding opportunity to let both franchises meet on-screen and to see the torch passed, from one generation to another. On this episode, we talk about familiar and yet unfamiliar sight of Next Gen on the big screen, the new cinematic look of TNG, the way the film captures the heart and the intellect of the series, the new facets of characters like Picard and Data, the poignant themes of change and loss, and why it's okay that your movie "feels like a long episode."We also discuss TV shows and movies swapping roles, the birth of unhelpful criticism, the James Cameron sequel, thanking Melinda Snodgrass, the mystery of 47, getting Geordi an iPhone, hangin' with Nana, racing RedLetterMedia, the punchiest captain in Starfleet history, running out of Data stories, throwing women overboard, the Riker/Worf broship, Big Kirk Bi Energy, that Nexus sweet spot, Beef Jerky Sting, groundhog eggs, and saying goodbye to the D!Hug your cat; you never know!Follow Just Enough Trope and Sailor Moon on Twitter and give them a listen!https://twitter.com/justenoughtropehttps://twitter.com/noob_sailorLearn the story behind your favorite Trek episodes with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingWait 'til Tuesday with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/WVvCHVWqzfBuy us a fire engine on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2
