There's a classic scene from one of the best movies of all time. In "The Terminator" (the original one), Kyle Reese, who was sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor, has a little dialogue with her where he's trying to explain the gravity of the threat and danger she's in. Kyle Reese: "Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!" Sarah Connor: "Can you stop it?"
Send us Fan Mail"I'll be back." It's the phrase that launched a billion-dollar franchise, turned a former bodybuilder into an absolute icon, and gave everyone a permanent fear of red A.I.This week on ‘Entertain This!', Mitch and Tom are hopping into a stolen '77 Chevy and tracking down James Cameron's 1984 sci-fi masterpiece, ‘The Terminator'.Join the guys as they break down the gritty, low-budget masterpiece that perfectly blended tech-noir atmosphere with relentless, heart-pounding action. Tom unpacks the tactical terrifying realism of a cybernetic organism that literally will not stop until you are dead, while Mitch tries to figure out the logistics of 1980s time travel physics (and why Kyle Reese decided to steal hobo pants and never upgrade). From Brad Fiedel's iconic, metallic heartbeat score to Stan Winston's legendary practical effects, we are diving deep into why this gritty thriller still holds up over four decades later. Was Sarah Connor the ultimate blueprint for the modern action heroine? How did Arnold manage to be utterly terrifying with only 14 lines of dialogue? And honestly, how much chain-link fence is ‘too' much chain-link fence for a final showdown?Dust off your leather jacket, leave your phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range at home, and press play.Listen closely... because if you miss this episode, the future is history.Subscribe, rate, and review wherever you get your podcasts. It's appearing RIGHT NOW. In your life. In this moment. You just keep forgetting.**Because Flatland has a forgetting mechanism.**Every time you see a glitch in reality.Every time you perceive something the 2D world says doesn't exist.Every time the Sphere lifts you out and shows you other dimensions…**The system makes you forget.**Makes you “be realistic.”Makes you “get back to normal.”Makes you rebuild your 2D identity as fast as possible.**Because if you STAYED in the vertical dimension… you'd see the prison bars.****And prisoners who see the bars become insurgents.**-----## This episode is not information. It is initiation.Three techniques are being deployed simultaneously:**1. RAS (RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM) ACTIVATION**- Your perception filter is being reprogrammed- After this episode, you'll start seeing Sphere moments EVERYWHERE- Glitches you ignored before will become LOUD- Synchronicities will multiply (or you'll finally notice them)**3. Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS. This week TGTPTU guns down the second half of our Lance Henriksen double feature with an episode recorded in the past and sent to the listener in the future as a digital file encoding the three core hosts' discussion of writer Harlan Ellison's (please, no more legal action, ATTN: Ellison's Estate) sci-fi/80's action/quasi-horror flick THE TERMINATOR (1984). Director James Cameron (and co-writer Gale Anne Heard) broke onto the cinema scene with this low-/mid-budget, high octane film and its titular, iconic creation. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the killer robot (technically an android but called a cyborg) Terminator sent from the future to eliminate Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor but followed by scrappy future soldier Kyle Reese, played by Michael Biehn, and you know the deal having seen T2 (1991); this first film is when Connor gets preggers and has awesome 80's style and learns of the future badass she must, and does, become. Future fellow Cameron android player Lance Henriksen plays a cop, who may or may not die in the film, when Schwarzenegger's T-800 delivers on his iconic promise to the precinct's desk officer that he will return. (Schwarzenegger, as we learn this episode, did not want to deliver Cameron's line as written as the English word “I'll” was difficult for the bodybuilding immigrant.) The hosts this week (no Jack, no special guest Shannon) speculate on Cameron's CB sexy talk when he was a truck driver, discover where Jack got his fashion sense, and express awe as how stripped down and fast-paced the story is. Ken fondly remembers the short-lived TV series Manimal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manimal), Ryan reveals the film to secretly be an 80's slasher, and Thomas, bummed, reacts with atemporal microaggression by introducing earlier into the pod the concept of Roko's basilisk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roko%27s_basilisk but don't click!). A least one Cameron shows up while a confused former prime minister of England makes a brief off-mic appearance. Harlan Ellison also enters the chat, and the listener owes us $1. Hasta la vista, absent special guest Shannon Connor. May your mission down Mexico way to find and protect Chaplain Amy be met with success.THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias
