In this episode of Voices On Art, I talk with film and entertainment producer Larry Kasanoff about creativity, risk, fear – and what he calls “A Touch of the Madness", which is also the title of his recently published book about creativity, asking, creating, playing – and having the courage to act on an idea.Larry has worked on films including Platoon, Terminator 2, True Lies, Dirty Dancing and the Mortal Kombat franchise, and has spent decades moving between film, games and other forms of entertainment. Although our worlds are different, art and film production have a lot in common: both begin with an idea and depend on vision, collaboration, risk and the courage to bring something new into the world.We talk about what a producer actually does – not simply financing a film, but developing an idea and keeping hundreds of people on one creative path. Larry tells me how taking a major risk on Platoon early in his career shaped his philosophy: exceptional work often begins where the safe choice ends.From there, our conversation moves into why fear can be such a powerful obstacle to creativity, why audiences still want the new and unexpected, and why Larry believes cinema has a future precisely because people still want shared experiences and human stories.We also talk about AI and new technologies, the difference between using technology as a tool and allowing it to replace the human element, the importance of fun and playfulness in art, and how Larry decides whether an idea is worth pursuing.Later in the conversation, Larry speaks about his friendship with Zen Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and how mindfulness changed the way he works: doing one thing at a time instead of constantly multitasking.A conversation about making things, staying curious, taking chances – and keeping a little madness alive. Si and Carl dive into James Cameron's Abyss as we tell some True Lies, wrestle with a Titanic budget and discuss Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Brad Fiedel wrote one of the most recognisable pieces of music in film history, and he did it on a drum machine, a sequencer and a keyboard chained together with a computer ribbon cable, before MIDI was really a thing. The famous lurch in the rhythm is him hitting a button by hand and deciding the wobble was better than the fix. Years later Henry Mancini rang up wanting to record it with a big band, and the man writing the lead sheet couldn't work out the time signature.There is a lot more to Brad than Terminator, and that's really what this conversation is about. He grew up inside his parents' school of the arts on Long Island, his dad a jazz musician, his mum a modern dancer who studied with Martha Graham. He spent years improvising live for dance classes, which turned out to be exactly the muscle a film composer needs, though nobody told him that at the time. He nearly signed to Columbia. He played keys for Hall and Oates in 1974 and jammed with the band that became the E Street Band. He was working with Arthur Miller and Vanessa Redgrave before James Cameron ever called.We get into temp tracks and why he never did his best work against one, when a scene is better off with no music at all, the direction Cameron gave him on the canal chase in T2, and the moment after the True Lies sessions when a small voice told him he was finished. These days his regular gig is writing musicals with first graders in Santa Barbara, and he's very clear that he gets as much out of it as they do.This podcast is completely independent and made possible by listener support. This week on Forgotten Cinema, Forgotten Summer continues with "Blown Away", the 1994 action thriller starring Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones.Both Mike Butler and Mike Field find pieces of the film to enjoy. The practical explosions deliver, the final confrontation between Bridges and Jones has plenty of energy, and there is the foundation of a tense revenge thriller buried somewhere beneath all the chaos.Unfortunately, "Blown Away" is also a complete mess. The timeline is never properly established, the shared history between its hero and villain desperately needed a clear flashback, and several characters make choices that are difficult to understand. The questionable Irish and Boston accents do not help, nor does a badly miscast Forest Whitaker in a role that never makes much sense to begin with.Tommy Lee Jones certainly commits to the madness, and Jeff Bridges does what he can to hold everything together, but the film never develops its characters or central conflict enough to make the spectacle truly matter.Released in the same summer as "Speed" and shortly before "True Lies", this uneven action thriller was always going to struggle to stand out. With better competition, sharper writing, and more memorable action surrounding it, "Blown Away" was ultimately destined to be...forgotten.What's another forgotten 90's Action Blockbuster? Larry Kasanoff has produced more than 200 films, including Terminator 2, True Lies, and the Mortal Kombat franchise. So it's fitting that one of the most useful lessons of his career came from a kid on a set tour. Episode page with links, video, and more Larry had decided to redesign the Mortal Kombat character Kano, dropping his metallic eye because it felt too close to the Terminator's exoskeleton. A junior-high student touring the set saw the new design and had a full-blown panic attack over the change. As Larry puts it, "My mistake hit me. My audience point-blank told me what to do." He had been designing for himself, not for the people who loved the character. He changed Kano back that day, and the character is still going strong decades later. That tension between an artist's instinct and what the audience actually wants runs through the whole conversation. Larry and Mark get into the bet-your-job decision behind Platoon, why an idea everyone instantly loves should make you nervous, and the 3D network that folded in six months because it chased technology with no real idea underneath it -- and what all of that says about the rush to make decisions by algorithm. A candid, funny, and useful conversation about creativity, risk, and the discipline of knowing when to trust your gut and when to listen.
