On Episode 154 of the Film '89 Podcast, Steve and Skye are joined by returning co-host, Becky D'Anna. A veteran of Hollywood movie marketing and a seasoned podcaster, Becky now has her very own podcast, the brilliant Hanging with Becky Podcast. The topic of this episode is a film that's not only one of the Film '89 team's all-time favourites, it's also become the most requested film for the team to cover, but moreover, it's Becky's all-time favourite film; from 1991, director James Cameron re-teams with superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger; it is of course, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Also starring Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick and Edward Furlong, T2 was not only the most expensive film ever made upon its release in July 1991, but it would go on to be a critical and commercial smash hit and the highest-grossing film that year. But more than that, it was a film so groundbreaking in its use of cutting-edge special effects technology that it would forever change the face of cinema. More than just an action-science-fiction blockbuster, T2 is a superbly written and impeccably directed film, and easily one of the greatest movies ever made and more than worthy of the usual in-depth Film '89 treatment.

Send us a textLITTLE ODESSA (1994) A new season (Season 16) in a new year (2026 CE), and The Good, The Pod, and The Ugly returns to its roots with its unpatented temporal pincer movement covering the directorial filmography of American auteur James Gray. And in keeping with this homecoming, we begin our Touch of Gray Season with the Gen X filmmaker's first feature endeavor LITTLE ODESSA (1994).  Made at the unripened age of twenty-three after being recruited out of USC film school, Gray's inaugural film is a mixture of the highly personal (reflecting his own mother's terminal brain cancer, father's temper, and family's Slavic Jewish émigré origins) with trappings of the crime genre (hitman with ice cold blood in his veins returns to the one place he promised never to return, viz. New York City, i.e. Brooklyn's Brighton Beach a.k.a. Little Odessa), each and together building to a profoundly unhappy ending.   Thanks to Brit producer Paul Webster who recruited Gray for this first film, Gray was able to bring on Tim Roth fresh from his acclaimed performance in Reservoir Dogs who was able to attract Edward Furlong, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell, and Moira Kelly. Gray and team worked around losing a week to a record-setting blizzard in NYC, some days with only four hours to shoot, to create this two-hander crime+family (but not “crime family”) drama with the dominant hand played by Roth as the older brother hitman and other hand by Furlong as the younger brother under his father's thumb and regularly truant from school. Redgrave and Schell play their parents. Kelly, two years removed from The Cutting Edge and Fire Walk with Me, plays Roth's love interest. He's your new dad and he's been sent back in time by your 45 year old self. Devastation may have been delayed but still imminent. There's hope still in keeping John Connor alive to destroy Skynet tomorrow. The resistance hacked an Arnold bot and sent it back but Skynet sent a Liquid Metal prototype back too and he's scary as fuck. A defining film for a generation, an exceptional action movie and a rare sequel that is better than the original. Of course we're talking about “TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY” from 1991 directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, Edward Furlong and Joe Morton. With the help of his pet Terminator, John Connor and his mother can prevent the future and stop Skynet on the cusp of its creation so long as they can survive the relentless T-1000.
