This is a never before seen episode that was recorded but never aired and we couldn't keep holding onto this gem. During Summer 2020 we celebrated the 1 year anniversary of the How'd I Get Here podcast and it was a reflection on some of the episodes that have past. We talk about self doubt. Where does it come from and why do we have it? Our purpose in life. Can it change or are we stuck on one path? The conversation jumped around but this is certainly not an episode you want to miss. Tap in with us for this dope conversation!
In this episode of "How'd I Get Here", Ace and Cj sit down with "Associate Creative Director' Darrow Alexander. Darrow talks to the guys about his journey in the graphic design and marketing world, starting his own agency at 21 years old, being on the ground floor of black movement within his current organization, becoming a board member for a non-profit organization aimed at helping black youth, and being one of the few black men in an ad agency.
What does a life in alignment look like? I know all too well the price one pays when our people pleasing, perfection tendencies and doing what it takes to meet performance expectations take a hold of us. I've had a few life assignments come my way to learn this lesson. Often times, the way we learn this lesson is with a visit from the dark night of the soul. My guest today is Lisa Hutcheson, Managing Partner at J.C Williams Group, a boutique, global retail consulting firm that specializes in retail strategy and research. Lisa gets personal with us by sharing her journey on how she overcame these fear triggers. It almost cost her life. A seemingly healthy 40year old – in an instant gets flatlined on a treadmill. In this episode you'll hear how this big wake-up call woke Lisa up. Fear is always waiting at your doorstep, ready to walk in whenever you try something new. Lisa also shares her experience of moving from blogging to doing videos and how it moved her away from alignment again. Lisa offers us a formula on how to get out there and try new things, even though it would be perfect, make others happy and at time not even get close to our personal standards. Ace and Cj are back at it doing the last "I Ain't Going" episode of the year (How'd I Get Here is coming in December) talking about the Jeezy and Gucci Verzuz, the 1st Aunt Viv being BIKE, white privilege in the NFL, biased NFL power rankings, Super Bowl predictions, the crazy NBA transactions, NBA white privilege, an improptu baby crying, and as always "Who Ain't Going" this week.
This week we have a little bit of sad news. After much discussion and consternation, I and my sisters have decided to put How in the HELL Did I Get Here on hiatus. We might be back and we might not. This wasn’t an easy decision, but life changes and it just seems like the right thing to do for right now. I want to say a huge thank you to you, our listener… and a huge thank you to my sisters for indulging my dream of creating this podcast. It wouldn’t have been possible without either you or the sisters. So, thank you so much. Seriously, the support you’ve given us and the fact that we have people listening from around the world every week still blows my mind and fills me with awe and gratitude. And, if you really miss me, you can find me at my other podcast the Fall in Love with Yourself Toolkit where I’m dishing out advice for your week, and other fun information. You might even hear a sister or two over there from time to time. For the time being, you can still catch us on Fridays on How in the HELL Did I get here Shorts which are stories pulled from the archives of How in the Hell did I get here. The plan is to keep that going for as long as it makes sense, so for you die-hard fans you can still get your fix on Friday mornings. This week we have three stories for you, one from Jenny, one from me and one from a listener and I don’t think they have anything in common… except of course all of us wondering How in the HELL did I Get Here? This week's show is a little different, we talk about a sad subject... losing a pet. And, in true How in the Hell did I Get Here fashion, we also share some funny, sweet and poignant stories about Daisy the telepathic cat, Rex the wonder wiener dog, and everybody's favorite... Bentley, the blind (and freaking) naughty beagle. If you love pets and have lost pets, you won't want to miss this one. Written, produced and hosted by Kim A. This story takes place in the early '90s and concludes in 2007. Make sure you listen all the way! It's another classic How in the Hell did I Get Here? family legend... the time our dad shot our sister! (Don't worry, Jenny is okay and the story is hilarious!) One more thing, I wanted to give a shout out to my friend, Nicole Rivera...if you’re a writer or want to be, check out her podcast Stop Writing Alone to find community and inspiration. Toughness is not an attribute used very often to describe artists. However it is the perhaps the best way to describe J Van Auken. Growing up in icy Minnesota J realized his true calling was to make his movies look like TV, so he set off for one of the toughest film programs in the country and eventually found his way to Los Angeles. After working on bad projects as a cinematographer just to pay the rent it was clear J needed a change. Since, he has put up life and limb in order to see his feature film, Revelator, become a reality. Using a combination of relationships and saved up money to direct and star in the horror thriller that will be released later this year J truly embodies the indie filmmaker spirit. This week on Life Of Cahill J Van Auken, in part one of a two part conversation, sits down and asks himself, how did I Get Here?
