[Note: Stay tuned at the end to hear the band play Blue Skies!] It has been said that Irving Berlin didn't write American music ... he was American music. Indeed, the scope and length of his career, and his vast body of work in a variety of musical contexts give credence to this argument. One of the very few songwriters of his generation who wrote his own lyrics as well as the music, it is staggering to realize that English wasn't even his native language. Many of his witty, urbane lyrics belie the fact that he grew up speaking Yiddish, primarily. Jazz musicians have embraced his strong melodies and interesting harmonic twists for generations. The fact that he really never studied harmony and could only play on the black keys of the piano make his output even more astounding!

How the sounds of whales guide conservation efforts

Biological oceanographer John Ryan joins Mongabay's podcast to discuss his team's multiyear study that examined vocalizations of baleen whales, including blue (Balaenoptera musculus), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), and how this science is critical for understanding their feeding habits, and thus informing their conservation. The study found that these whales' songs rise and fall with their food supply, which provides valuable insights into how changing ocean conditions can affect their health and guide management measures. “Some of the research we did tracking the movement and ecology of blue whales helped our sanctuary [to] act on this long-term concern about ship strikes, and to join a program that is called Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies,” the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) researcher says. Why are we filled with so many contradictions? How does writing help us make sense of the absurdity and of the absurdity and chaos of the world? T.C. Boyle is a novelist and short story writer based out of Santa Barbara, California. He has published 19 novels, such as The Road to Wellville and more than 150 short stories for publications like The New Yorker, as well as his many short story collections. His writing has earned numerous awards, including winning the PEN/Faulkner Award for Best Novel of the Year for World's End. “What I have done in my career is just try to assess who we are, what we are, why we are here, and how come we, as animals, are able to walk around and wear pants and dresses and talk on the internet, while the other animals are not. It's been my obsession since I was young. I think if I hadn't become a novelist, I might have been happy to be a naturalist or a field biologist. There is some kind of magic in the creative process. A note about the work "Blue Skies, Birdsong" from Leyla Loued-Khenissi for the Michigan Quarterly Review's Winter 2025 Issue: Blue Skies, Birdsong recounts a harrowing ordeal Leyla Loued-Khenissi and her family experienced during the 1997 Sierra Leone military coup. Over 24 hours, their home was attacked 16 times by armed rebels and civilians before they escaped to safety. This first-person narrative sheds light on a little-known event in Africa that predates social media. Loued-Khenissi wrote it all down to confront her memories and  ensure the story is remembered. By sharing the story, she can mirror it to others, claiming a sense of reality between her today and her memory to achieve some catharsis and understanding while preserving a page of history that might otherwise fade into obscurity

Rudy Giuliani keeps digging that hole, while his hero Trump doesn't lift a finger to help him. Maybe that's because Trump is too busy picking through the trash for cabinet members, because they're such garbage even Maggie Haberman can't keep up. The fellas also have a good laugh at the MAGA morons who think Trump is gonna lower prices—boy do they have a surprise coming! Finally, Brendan gets dragged back onto social media kicking and screaming, and finds it's not THAT bad at BlueSky.

Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/sturgill-simpsonYou might think alt-country veteran Sturgill Simpson would need no introduction by this point in his career, but this year, he set out to reintroduce himself to the world—as Johnny Blue Skies. That's the moniker he created for his new record, Passage du Desir, which was released in July on High Top Mountain. Simpson promised that the album was the first step in a new phase of his creative life; the next was the subsequent tour. Simpson, looking his Waylon Jennings best, met up with Premier Guitar's John Bohlinger before his headlining gig at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Sporting a new-to-him Gibson ES-335 and an army-camo jacket, he told Bohlinger he's not trying to be a star guitarist: “I'm trying to be a much less educated version of Bob Weir,” he grins. The star turn is for the Estonian guitarist Laur Joamets, who handles plenty of leads along with pedal steel. The guitar duo took us through their Blue Skies-era gear, featuring an array of Magnatone amplifiers, guitars old and new, and the simplest pedalboard you'll ever see on an arena stage.Shop Sturgill Simpson's Gear:Dunlop EP103 Echoplex - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LX7gb0Fender Esquire - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Y9XVBRFender Stratocaster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Py1vBYMagnatone Panoramic Stereo - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/y2jrVyMagnatone Varsity Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/yqRmvbMXR Booster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/K0eZGyMXR Tap - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/7amJVdPeterson Stomp Classic - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjPeterson StroboStomp - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjSource Audio True Spring Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/mOg2vaT-Rex Replica - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/NkM3MqFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/sturgill-simpsonSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Molly Tuttle & D'Addario0:15 - Sturgill Simpson Playing Intro0:55 - John Bohlinger Intro1:13 - Sturgill Simpson's 1962 Gibson ES-3354:13 - 1962 Gibson ES-335 Custom Wiring6:41 - Sturgill Simpson's 1956 Fender Esquire11:17 - Sturgill Simpson's Pedalboard13:09 - Sturgill Simpson's Magnatone Panoramic Stereo Combos16:09 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario16:34 - Laur Joamets' 1974 Fender Telecaster21:34 - Laur Joamets' Fano Guitars PX624:26 - Laur Joamets' Fender Stratocaster26:49 - Laur Joamets' Amps29:28 - Laur Joamets' Pedalboard34:39 - Laur Joamets' Pedal-Steel Guitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024#guitar #rigrundown #sturgillsimpson #guitarist #guitarplayer #telecaster #music

WE GOT LIFT OFF!Who doesn't LOVE a great podcast! Sometimes entertainment, other times educational and sometimes, background noise. READY to put your cape on as we shift into the NEXT ERA?With over 200 past podcast episodes, I'm ready to get the air waves rolling again. DEEP DIVES INTO SOUL WITH THE KICK OFF of THE LIGHT BETWEEN PODCAST In this Initial episode, I lay the grounding for us to explore the power of self-compassion, deep resonance, and nurturing what the next century will thrive on - creativity. I used to chase intellect and facts, believing they held a single truth. Now, I see each fact as a facet of a larger reality. This shift led me to view enlightenment not as seeking truth, but as embracing love. By letting go of the desire for absolute truth, we can truly experience love. Enlightenment is accessible to everyone, regardless of background—each person's path is unique. In a world where we often seek validation and understanding from others, it's easy to forget that our deepest wisdom lies within. THERE IS A CRUCIBLE MOMENT FOR ALL YOU, RIGHT NOW. The path to self-discovery and growth begins with cul tivating a compassionate connection with ourselves, embracing our unique soul contracts gifts, creativity, and tapping into the guidance of our higher selves.Through vulnerability, I will be switching the tone of future podcasts with play, intuitive downloads and current event insights AND the practice of two-way prayer. We are mirrors to each other and now more than ever is the time to establish a ongoing dialogue with our soul and spirit guides, transcending the limitations of our intellect and accessing benevolent energy. This sacred connection allows us to nurture our creativity, overcome fear and doubt, and become beacons of calm in challenging times.By integrating our intuitive channel with the care circuit, we can unlock our full potential, radiate our unique message, and create a ripple effect of goodness in the world. It's time to focus on our inner light and our creativity as a sacred necessity. Push boundaries, celebrate your individuality, and spread love and kindness in a world that needs it now more than ever.Continue focusing on nurturing your creativity, become a beacon of calm in the turbulent world and create and celebrate goodness, because it's a powerful antidote to fear and negativity. As you listen through to the end of the first of future intuitive downloads, I ask you to join me. It's your turn. What would your soul or your spirit guides have you to know? Here's the question. My dear soul, what would you have me know about embracing my unique creative gifts and allow yourself to sit and receive. Two way prayer does not mean dialoguing, does not mean letting negative Nelly into your brain. It just allows spirit to talk through you. Remember my beloved that you are creativity. And creativity is a sacred gift. You are a gift. It's not about perfection or comparison, but about expressing your unique vision, your voice. We need you right now. Trust in this process. Be kind to yourself and allow your creativity to flow freely through you. The world so deeply needs your particular magic now more than ever. So again, it's your turn. Opening & Asking….My dear soul, what would you want me to know? What would you have me know about nurturing my creativity with care? All my love, all my light. I'll see you on the next one.
