Judith Shakespeare's life is a mystery. While history records her as the younger daughter of William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway, much of her story remains untold. In her new novel, The Owl Was a Baker's Daughter, author and Shakespeare scholar Grace Tiffany brings Judith to life—filling in the gaps with adventure, resilience, and rebellion. A sequel to My Father Had a Daughter, this novel follows Judith into later adulthood. No longer the headstrong girl who once fled to London in disguise to challenge her father, she is now a skilled healer and midwife. However, when she is accused of witchcraft, she must escape Stratford and navigate a world where Puritans have closed playhouses, civil war splits England, and even her father's legacy is at risk. Tiffany explores how she merged fact and fiction to reimagine Judith's life. From the real-life scandal that shook her marriage to the theatrical and political disturbances of her time, the author examines what it means to write historical fiction—and how Shakespeare's life and legacy continue to inspire new stories. Grace Tiffany is a professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama at Western Michigan University. She has also taught Shakespeare at Fordham University, the University of New Orleans, and the University of Notre Dame, where she obtained her doctorate. She is also the author of My Father Had a Daughter and The Turquoise Ring. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published March 25, 2025. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. How does Shakespeare's King Lear resonate in a world facing climate catastrophe? Novelist Julia Armfield explores this question in Private Rites, a novel set in a near-future London reshaped by rising sea levels. Following three sisters grappling with their father's death, Private Rites weaves together themes of inheritance, power, and familial wounds—echoing Shakespeare's tragic monarch while carving out a distinctly modern, queer perspective. Armfield, author of Our Wives Under the Sea, discusses her fascination with disaster narratives, the inescapable dynamics of sibling relationships, and how Shakespeare's work inspires her storytelling. From the storm in King Lear to the watery depths of her fiction, she reflects on how queerness, horror, and the climate crisis intersect in literature. Julia Armfield is a fiction writer living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review, and Best British Short Stories in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award in 2018 and won the White Review Short Story Prize in 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of salt slow, a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize in 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize in 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea, was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award in 2022 and won the Polari Prize in 2023. Her second novel, Private Rites, was longlisted for the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize in 2024. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published March 11, 2025. © Folger Shakespeare Library. Through elaborate multidisciplinary collaboration, institutions with National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) standards can deliver a “high level of care” in the surgical treatment of patients with rectal cancer, according to Steven Wexner, MD, PhD, and Arielle Kanters, MD. In a conversation with CancerNetwork®, Wexner and Kanters detailed the history and advancement of the NAPRC as an interdisciplinary initiative to improve the outcomes of those undergoing surgery for rectal cancer. Wexner is the chair in the Department of Colorectal Surgery and director of the Ellen Leifer Shulman & Steven Shulman Digestive Disease Center at Cleveland Clinic, Florida, the founding chair of the NAPRC for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and part of the executive committee of the Commission on Cancer. Kanters is a colorectal surgeon, associate fellowship program director, and surgeon leader of the NAPRC program at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. Wexner spoke about the inspiration for developing the NAPRC as a mission to elevate the level of surgical outcomes in patients with rectal cancer across the United States to those he observed in European countries such as the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. He enlisted leaders from organizations including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the College of American Pathologists to outline and apply appropriate standards for surgical care in rectal cancer. Additionally, Kanters highlighted how enforcing precise guidelines and compliance measures through the NAPRC program facilitates multidisciplinary efforts with colleagues who specialize in radiology and pathology. She stated that these principles help individuals develop their skills across each department, thereby maintaining a high level of treatment for patients with rectal cancer. Findings from a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons indicated that mortality and complication rates appeared to be lower for patients who received surgery for rectal cancer at NAPRC-accredited institutions compared with those who were treated at non-accredited practices. Wexner and Kanters also discussed how potential advancements related to the use of neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy may further improve patient outcomes in the field. Additionally, they spoke about updated research on immunotherapy and other modalities that they anticipate at the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. In A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf famously imagined what might have happened if Shakespeare had a sister who was as gifted a writer as he was. She invents “Judith” Shakespeare, and concludes that this female genius would have been doomed. But that's not the end of the story. If Woolf had read Mary Sidney, Aemelia Lanyer (nee Bassano), Anne Clifford, and Elizabeth Carey, she might have thought differently about the fate of her fictional Judith Shakespeare. Ramie Targoff's new book, Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance, explores the lives and works of those four women.. Targoff tells us about them and reflects on why reading their work is so important. Ramie Targoff teaches English and Italian literature at Brandeis University. She's also a member of the Folger's Board of Governors. Her book Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance is available from Knopf. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. The word “histrionic” means “dramatic or theatrical.”“5 Signs You Might Be a Drama Queen” by Claire Jack Ph.D.Cleveland ClinicHistrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)For people with histrionic personality disorder, their self-esteem depends on the approval of others and doesn't come from a true feeling of self-worth. They have an overwhelming desire to be noticed and often behave dramatically or inappropriately to get attention.People with histrionic personality disorder often don't realize their behavior and way of thinking may be problematic.A pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by 5 or more of the following (Diagnosis Criteria):Is uncomfortable in situations in which he or she is not the center of attention Interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior Displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotionsConsistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to selfHas a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detailShows self-dramatization, theatricality, and exaggerated expression of emotion Is suggestible (i.e. - easily influenced by others or circumstances) Considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually areWhat are the signs and symptoms of histrionic personality disorder?Personality disorders, including histrionic personality disorder, are among the least understood mental health conditions.Studies that have been done about histrionic and other personality disorders have identified several factors that may lead to the development of histrionic or other personality disorders:Genetics: Histrionic personality disorder tends to run in families, so scientists think there may be a genetic (inherited) link.Childhood trauma: Children may cope with trauma, such as child abuse or the death of a family member, that later as an adult may be disruptive or problematic in their life and become part of a personality disorder.Parenting styles: Children who experience parenting styles that lack boundaries, are over-indulgent or inconsistent may be more likely to develop histrionic personality disorder. In addition, parents who display dramatic, erratic, volatile or inappropriate sexual behavior put their children at risk for developing this condition. Some researchers think that problems in parent-child relationships lead to the characteristic low self-esteem in people with HPD.How is histrionic personality disorder diagnosed?Past history.RelationshipsPrevious work history.Reality testing.Impulse control.Personality continues to evolve throughout child and adolescent development. Because of this, healthcare providers don't typically diagnose someone with histrionic personality disorder until after the age of 18.Personality disorders, including histrionic personality disorder, can be difficult to diagnose since most people with a personality disorder don't think there's a problem with their behavior or way of thinking. When they do seek help, it's often due to conditions such as anxiety or depression due to the problems created by their personality disorder, such as divorce or lost relationships, and not the disorder itself. When a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, suspects someone might have histrionic personality disorder, they often ask broad, general questions that won't create a defensive response or hostile environment. They ask questions that will shed light on:Because a person suspected of having histrionic personality disorder may lack awareness of their behaviors, mental health professionals might ask to collect information from the person's family and friends.Mental health providers base a diagnosis of histrionic personality disorder on the criteria for the condition in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. To learn about “Management and Treatment, “Prevention”, “Outlook / Prognosis / Complications” visit Cleveland Clinics website:: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9743-histrionic-personality-disorder Important Links:Full show notes: https://kuldrinskrypt.com/522National Suicide Hotline: 1-800-273-8255NCSF Kink Aware Professionals: https://www.kapprofessionals.org https://kuldrinskrypt.com/silentcommunication https://KuldrinsKrypt.com/survey https://kuldrinskrypt.com/TeePublic Show Producers (Updated Dec 1st, 2023):Become a show producer: https://KuldrinsKrypt.com/Patreon Make a one-time donation: https://KuldrinsKrypt.com/PayPal Snail mail a donation or gift:Kuldrin Entertainment, LLC257 N. Published March 13, 2024 The First Law in my book, The Ten Irrefutable Laws Of Horsemanship, states, "A Horse Can Kill You." They are quicker and more muscular than humans, with clubs at the end of each limb. My original mentor, John Steiner, DVM, was killed by a horse while he was working on a stallion after his retirement. This week, two horses tried to add me to the list of fatalities caused by horses. But they didn't. This podcast is about why they didn't, how I use the knowledge of the brain, and how both horses and humans think to connect and prevent a disaster. It might be refreshing, or it might be something you have heard before but need help understanding. Either way, it is how I have learned to connect with horses I've never seen before and, within 30 seconds, start floating their teeth without medication. What I do can be used today by you without any other gear. It is all in the way you think.

In her new memoir, "Green World," Shakespeare scholar Michelle Ephraim tells the story of how she came to Shakespeare relatively late in her education. Although she didn't grow up with Shakespeare, Ephraim became transfixed by "The Merchant of Venice" as a grad student. In particular, she found herself drawn to Jessica, Shylock's daughter, and the mysteries of their relationship. That curiosity led Ephraim to discover a novel Biblical interpretation of some lines from the play as she researched her dissertation. In Ephraim's memoir, "Merchant" refracts through the changing dynamics of her own family, as her Holocaust-survivor parents age and she becomes a mother herself. She shares her story with host Barbara Bogaev. Michelle Ephraim teaches Shakespeare at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. She's the co-author of a cocktail recipe book called Shakespeare, Not Stirred, and the co-host of the Everyday Shakespeare podcast, both with Caroline Bicks. Her memoir Green World: A Tragicomic Memoir of Love & Shakespeare won the Juniper Award for Creative Nonfiction, and is out now from University of Massachusetts Press. Published March 6, 2024 Feeding grain and processed feeds and supplements are killing our horses, yet these companies continue advertising to horse owners in all the horse magazines. However, with the Spring 2024 issue of The Horse, I discovered there were no ads for these foods, except for three supplements. Why? Because this issue focuses on equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). How can they do this and simultaneously promote the cause of EMS? They can't! Kudos to this magazine for taking a stand. It is the start of Helping Horses Thrive In A Human World™, and I am grateful. I discuss the article and add other ideas that will interest all owners, including metabolic flexibility, a description of the batteries within all cells, and a brief discussion using physics to explain why athletic horses do not need an extra 200 pounds (about 100kg).
Written by Greg Glassman, Published March 2003 "It is CrossFit's contention that cops and soldiers are professional athletes. In fact, we argue that the physical preparedness required of military combat - and by extension law enforcement - matches and regularly surpasses that required of Olympic athletes." - Greg Glassman
Written by Greg Glassman, Published March 2003 "The push-up, long a favorite among junior high school P.E. teachers and Marine Corps drill instructors, is for many, more closely associated with punishment than anything else. Though common to group exercise programs, its use in serious strength and conditioning regimens is infrequent." - Greg Glassman

Published: March 16, 2022 Julianne Stanz joins Jim Friend to discuss her new book, Braving the THIN Places. A “thin place” is where God's grace is waiting to happen. Your thin place might be an important threshold, a soul friend, a fresh chapter in your own life story, a painful secret or fear, or a time of hardship. Whatever the circumstance, a thin place is where God and humanity meet in a mysterious way. These moments open us to places of rawness and beauty. When we enter into a thin place, something seems to break open inside us, and words are inadequate to describe what we are experiencing. In these moments, we feel a sense of breakthrough as we break free of the ordinary and experience the extraordinary amid our daily lives. To help us live this in our daily life and work, he guides us through three transformational principles for ministry and life: Strengthening relationships, Boldly growing engagement, and Connecting people to the mission.Whether you are a pastor, part of a parish staff, or a volunteer at your home parish, these principles apply to you. Because if we really want to make transformational change in our Church and our world, we first have to recognize the people in front of us — who they are, what they need, what gifts God has given them, and how he is inviting them to participate in the mission of the Church. Not merely another program to transform your parish, this book offers a simple yet radical invitation to roll up your sleeves and make a difference by getting back to basics.Order Heart of the Mission on Amazon. Published: March 01, 2020 How should a pastor go about asking his parishioners for a gift? What will help a pastor feel comfortable? How should a pastor frame that conversation? On today's show, Michael Hutchinson, Managing Director for Changing Our World, joins Jim Friend as they talk about “Making the Ask” for a parish campaign. In her book The Wife of Bath: A Biography, Marion Turner reacquaints us with a remarkable, vital character: Alison, Wife of Bath, the most famous fictional pilgrim in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Turner puts Alison into her historical context in 14th- and 15th-century England and the literary tradition, arguing that the Wife of Bath is literature's first “ordinary woman,” neither a paragon of virtue nor a vicious caricature. Instead, she's funny, sexual, opinionated, competent—a recognizably human character. That's all the more remarkable for her having been written by a man. Turner's biography goes on to trace the afterlives of the Wife of Bath through reinterpretations and reworkings of the character. That includes Voltaire's version, James Joyce's Molly Blum, Pier Paolo Pasolini's film adaptation, a recent play by Zadie Smith, and her influence on Shakespeare. Turner is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. Marion Turner is a professor of English at the University of Oxford. She is also the author of Chaucer: A European Life.
