Athlete Tough. If I were to ask you what is the key to being mentally tough, what would you say the answer is?
This episode kicks off the way so many of our best ones do: with a pre-show conversation that turned into the real show. What started as a casual check-in about 75 Hard, restarts, and setbacks quickly turned into a deep dive on purpose, accountability, and the power of having people who pull you off the sidelines when it's easier to stay there. From mental toughness and discipline to rediscovering your mission and living on purpose, this one is raw, real, and packed with reminders that growth happens when you decide to get back in the game.Top 5 Takeaways from This Episode:Restarting is harder than starting. It's easy to stop when life gets messy — but the real challenge comes in finding the courage to begin again. The longer you wait, the louder the excuses get.Accountability changes everything. When you're surrounded by people who challenge you, support you, and pull you back into the game, it becomes nearly impossible to stay stuck on the sidelines.Purpose requires action. Your purpose isn't what you write on paper — it's what shows up in your daily decisions, habits, and the impact you have on others. Purpose without action is just a wish.Discipline builds freedom. 75 Hard isn't just about workouts or water — it's about creating structure, self-control, and the kind of consistency that leads to real freedom and confidence.Joy lives in alignment. When you're living on purpose and in sync with your mission, life feels fuller. The peace, fulfillment, and joy that come from that alignment make the hard work worth it.One Truth:You'll never find your purpose sitting on the sidelines — you discover it when you get back in the game and start moving forward, even when it's hard.
Carl and Mike get into some football talk and share thoughts on their conversation with Ben Volin and discuss if they feel better about the team's chances about picking up the win on Sunday after hearing Volin's take on the Patriots and the season they are having.
It's episode 300! Host Adrian and Sofeast head of NPD Paul Adams dig into IK ratings, what they measure (impact energy in joules), why they matter for real-world product abuse (drops, kicks, tool strikes), and how to connect use-case, environment, materials, and system-level design choices (wall thickness, ribs, radii, gate location) to hit targets like IK06–IK10. You'll hear practical examples (from light switches to job-site drills), polymer options (PP, HIPS, ABS, PC/ABS blends), and environment trade-offs (temperature, UV, chemicals, cost) so your spec says more than “make it rugged.” Episode Sections: 00:12 – Introduction: designing for toughness via IK rating 01:58 – IK vs IP: ingress ≠ impact toughness 05:16 – What is IK? Impact energy (J); Izod/Charpy context 08:33 – IK scale overview: IK00 → IK10 (~20 J) 09:18 – Start with real-world use before materials 10:15 – Low-impact examples (e.g., light switches) 11:56 – Mid-impact examples (bench drops, tools falling) 12:50 – High-impact / IK10: sledgehammer territory 14:02 – Specify toughness explicitly: choose an IK level 17:02 – Mapping joules to IK (≈0.35 J to 20 J) 19:34 – Materials at IK06 (~1 J): PP, HIPS, ABS, PA 21:47 – Materials at IK09 (~10 J): high-impact ABS, PC/ABS, modified PA 25:51 – Designing for IK: thickness, ribs, radii 27:18 – Molding realities: gate location, weld lines 29:26 – Environment trade-offs: temperature, UV, chemicals, cost 33:14 – Same IK, different designs: oil vs building site 35:16 – Key takeaway: IK is a system rating 35:40 – Wrapping up Related content... Toughness is a quality that will get you through things that you wouldn't stand a chance at getting through without it.We finish up the third week of our series of quotes based on themes from my book, "Senior Salute," with 5 more quotes on the theme of "Toughness."You will be faced with all kinds of challenges in your life. Some will require you to be physically tough - dealing with weather elements or getting physically hurt in some way. Others will force you to dig deep and find a toughness inside of you that tells you to keep going, don't give up, and fight to the bitter end. No matter what the situation is, the person that has the toughness and the perseverance to keep going, keep fighting, and never give up will always have the best chance at success. This week's episodes will all deal with this kind of toughness.I wrote "Senior Salute" as a follow-up to my most popular book ever, "Inspiration for the Graduate." Both are gift books for coaches or parents to give to their senior athletes. "Inspiration for the Graduate" makes for a great graduation gift, and "Senior Salute" is a great gift to give on Senior Night or at the End-of-Season Banquet. Each book is filled with quotes based on various Team Themes that, hopefully, the coaches have talked with and worked on with their teams at some point in the season. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the Trojans failing to build off of their victory over Michigan, falling to Notre Dame 34-23 in South Bend. The Fighting Irish absolutely pushed USC around on the lines of scrimmage, rushing for over 300 yards and holding the Trojans to just 68 yards on the ground. In two of the last three games the Trojans lacked the necessary toughness to play Big Ten big boy football, with both failing performances occurring on the road. Coach Hyde talks how this Trojan football team regressed, bouncing back after that disappointing loss at Illinois with a tough, gritty victory over Michigan, only to revert to the finesse team once again Saturday night in South Bend. He goes into what he liked about how USC performed and what the biggest issues were that led to yet another road defeat. Coach Harvey Hyde has been part of the Peristyle Podcast since 2008 and in the USC football world he is an expert on X's and O's, personnel, coaching philosophies and recruiting. Jeff Howe and CJ Vogel sat down for a Friday edition of On Texas Football, diving into CJ's new column: “What Needs to Travel with Texas” — meaning, what elements must follow this Longhorn team on the road and through the rest of the SEC schedule. I'm joined by Katie “Wildy” Brown—former Arizona Trail self-supported record holder and fresh off the Millwood 100, a 102-mile Wasatch linkup with ~37,000 feet of vert designed by Jared Campbell. We break down what Millwood actually is (route, not race), why she started at night, when the wheels got wobbly on night two, and how crew and pacers changed the game. Katie talks RUFA, Salt Lake's inversion (and why you literally run through it), and lessons from the mostly self-supported Plains 100—moon dust, SAR checkpoints, and an asthma scare at mile 100. We get into toughness vs. speed, route finding with cliff-band consequences, French-fry aid, ER-nurse night shifts, trail names (Wildy!), and why the Wasatch keeps calling her back. Hour 1 with Bob Pompeani and Tyler Kennedy: Tyler Kennedy believes the Penguins need to give their young guys a long leash. TK thinks the Penguins will be in more trouble if they put the young guys only on the 3rd and 4th line. Tristan Broz and other young players have played well in the preseason.
Tyler describes the cultural differences playing in different NHL cities. The Penguins are not going to beat teams with a superior offense, but it's going to come down to toughness. Ryan Graves is one of the bad contracts that Kyle Dubas signed.

Somber? Sure. Sky-is-falling? Hell no. Nebraska got mauled up front—but Raiola and the defense showed real growth. Let's talk like adults, Husker Nation. We open on the fan meltdown and why it's overcooked. Then we get into the real football: the DL held up better than most expected, but the O-line (especially at LT) was a problem all night. We argue the Elijah Pritchett vs “Gunner Tool” question and why penalties > drive-killing sacks. RB room? Thin. Emmett ran hard but isn't a true RB1 and pass pro burned us—bad. We clap back at the national talking heads ripping Dylan Raiola; the kid threw darts under constant heat and still stacked numbers. We also hit the secondary quietly bodying Michigan's hyped QB, the difference a few explosive runs made, and why roster building (recruiting + NIL) must target DL and RB. We close with prop-bet results, fan leaderboard shoutouts, and a bye-week tease.

There's an architecture to dysfunction. It starts with broken beliefs about who you are, and it becomes lifestyle chaos. This week, Ed Latimore joins me to dismantle that architecture from the inside out. A former heavyweight boxer turned Stoic philosopher, physicist, and master of emotional discipline, Ed knows what happens when discipline outruns self-awareness and toughness becomes armor, not healing. We go deep on how distorted thinking drives destructive behavior; how emotional regulation isn't about feeling control—it's predictive science; and why optimism without realism becomes denial. This episode is a surgical blueprint for rethinking how you think, feel, and engage with life's stress. If you're tired of overthinking, overdoing, and still not seeing change, listen closely. Because transformation begins the moment you question what you're telling yourself about your own strength, your pain, and your beliefs. Discussing takeaways from the Dolphins preseason debut vs the Chicago Bears with former Miami Dolphins WR Oronde Gadsden.
Marianne Lewis is dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Business, and she previously served as dean of Bayes Business School at City, University of London. Marianne researches organizational paradoxes, including the tensions surrounding leadership and innovation. She has been recognized among the world's most-cited researchers in her field, having won numerous academic awards, and her work also appears in media outlets, such as Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, and Newsweek. Her latest book, Both/And Thinking is published by Harvard Business School Press. In this episode we discuss the following: I love Marianne's insight that the best leaders are not tough or kind, but rather both. Toughness and kindness are not opposite ends of a spectrum but rather two sides of the same coin. And any leader who pushes too hard on one, while ignoring the other, will not reach their potential. And I thought it was especially interesting to hear about the creative geniuses who also appreciated tension and paradoxes: motion vs rest, particle vs wave, harmony vs discord, light vs. dark, life vs death. The magic is in the tension. When it comes to leadership the best leaders are both tough and kind.
