Most riders desire to develop a horse who is a happy, willing participant in whatever task or discipline they've set out towards. But where the training narrative used to revolve around making sure the horse knows who's the boss, newer methods value give and take and making sure your horse is heard in the conversation. The balance of toughness vs softness in riding has never been more at the forefront of discussion. We want our horses to respect boundaries and listen to our requests (especially for safety's sake!). We also want our horses to learn from a place of mutual respect and understanding, not fear and retribution. The line isn't always an easy one to walk, especially when preparing a horse for a results-focused competition. To help walk us through this landscape, we talk with top International Grand Prix Dressage rider JJ Tate. JJ has been competing at the highest levels since her junior years and has vowed to herself to train without shortcuts, with integrity and principles that are aligned with how horses think, move, and learn. She runs a USDF University Accredited online program called Team Tate Academy so anyone can access her expertise regardless of where they live, and was also mentored by the great Charles de Kunffy (she shares with us some of the wisdom she's learned from him along the way, which is particularly special). In this broader conversation, JJ and host Caroline Culbertson discuss hardness and softness in training, and why it's possible (maybe even necessary) to have both. They also dive into: The concept of “rider merit,” and how it should be assessed beyond just the competitive accolades a rider achieves What is “horse sport” really about, and what universal qualities does it share with other sports? Riding as character growth for both horse and rider The sort of rider you need to become to have the horse volunteer for you, and why it's something we should all strive for How science is backing up the classical methods that have always worked Why being clear with your horse is actually in the long run being kind The “Growth Mindset” and how to achieve it as a rider How methods of horse training in the EU differ from methods in the US, and how both have their strengths and weaknesses

It's no secret that buyers have migrated to crossovers and SUVs. Now it seems like people want a little more machismo from their machines, even if it's just looks. Nissan adds a little extra bravado to the Pathfinder with the Rock Creek model. It adds extra ground clearance, a heavy-duty roof rack, all-terrain rubber, an off-road suspension and a bunch more stuff. Even more power from the V6 engine. Tom Voelk takes it off road, on rock, that's near a creek (get it) to see if it really improves capability.

This week's episode of The Growth Guide podcast features Steve Magness, a performance coach who works with athletes, entrepreneurs and executives. He is the author of the book "Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness". He talks about his book which brings a radical rethinking of how we perceive toughness and what it means to achieve our high ambitions in the face of hard things.[02.41] Defining toughness – What people commonly think toughness means, comparing physical toughness vs. inner strength.[08.48] Training model – Why are people caged in an outdated training model to develop children using archaic military-style methods, when the US military has updated their training model.[15.03] Fear as a motivator – Why fear works as a motivator for a short period of time.[16:22] Ditching the facade – Acting or appearing tough is just faking it until you make it, until reality smacks us in the face. [25.00] Duality of life – We only show people what we want them to see. Steve dives into how dangerous it is when people show only their bright side on social media.[35.52] Arrogance vs. confidence – Confidence is not about being perfect. Steve explains what is lacking in people who try too hard to let others know they are confident and how you can build inner confidence.[41.30] Overcorrecting – We have a bias towards always correcting and what happens we tend to overcorrect.[47.11] Interoceptive system – Steve defines the interoceptive system and explains how it works. [56.32] Being alone in your head – How to learn to practice cognitive behavior therapy by making it simple and consistent in your life.[01.03.50] Using 2nd or 3rd Person – How referring to yourself in the 2nd or 3rd person can free you up to deal with the thought instead of having to be in charge.. [01.16.09] Stimulus and response – Increasing the gap between a stimulus and a response to improve your response.[01.24.14] Intrinsic motivation – Autonomy, mastery, and belonging are the three components that need to cultivate intrinsic motivation. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) bring you wall-to-wall reaction to the AFC and NFC Championship games. Unfortunately, bad officiating seemed to be the story of the weekend as the zebras absolutely botched several key plays in both games. Expect we'll see an officiating overhaul of some sort before next season. As far as the games themselves, Patrick Mahomes' toughness was on full display as he led to the Kansas City Chiefs to a win over the Cincinnati Bengals. What Mahomes was able to do on a bum ankle and down 3 of his best wide receivers is precisely why he's worth every penny of that $500 million contract. Not to be outdone, the Chiefs defense harassed Joe Burrow all night and came up with two huge turnovers to seal the win. The NFC Championship game, on the other hand, was a snoozefest as the San Francisco 49ers were forced to play their 4th string quarterback due to injury. So while the Philadelphia Eagles have been downright dominant during their postseason run, a case can be made that they've had the easiest path to the Super Bowl in NFL history. Later, the guys share their thoughts on a few other NFL stories that hit the newswire on Sunday. First, the Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Moore wasn't great in Dallas but he definitely wasn't the biggest problem either. This one definitely feels like Mike McCarthy is trying to save his own skin. Finally, the guys close the show with a wild Kyler Murray conspiracy theory that is guaranteed to have you re-thinking everything you thought we knew about the Arizona Cardinals. Be sure to pick up a copy of Stephen's book (available on March 7th, 2023 on Amazon); Life on the X: A Navy SEAL's Guide to Meeting any Challenge with Courage, Confidence, and Readiness - https://stephendrum.com/book-page/ 27-Year Navy SEAL Master Chief (SOCM) Stephen Drum (retired) joins this episode and speaks with the guys about the difference between the “best” and the “greatest.” He reflects on his upbringing in the special warfare community from young Sailor, to a leader in his community. He breaks down the training process for Navy Seal candidates. Damo asks Stephen what he would do in a “Liam Neeson Movie” style scenario. If you're in the Navy, we are sure that you heard of the “Warrior Toughness” program. This program was aimed to help Sailors with the ability to persevere and perform under danger and high stress scenarios. You've probably heard that this program was developed by a chaplain, psychologist, and a SEAL. Well Stephen is the SEAL that was a part of that Warrior Toughness development group. The trio discusses the importance of family and shows some love to military spouses. Bella Rasmussen is a senior at Laguna Beach High School—yes, the same Laguna Beach of reality TV lore—who carries a 4.0 grade point average. But when she's not excelling in the classroom, she's succeeding on the football field as a member of the Breakers' varsity team. In October 2022, Bella made history when she became the first female football player in California history to score not one, but two touchdowns in a game. Bella takes us into this moment, the celebration that followed and the lessons she's learned since. In this episode, Bella explores her football journey. A self-described “rambunctious” kid, she explains what led her to the sport. She tells listeners how as a high school athlete she navigates the physical differences between her and the boys she competes against. She examines why toughness is a critical tool to achieve the unprecedented. Bella discusses the mindset she adopts to compete as a female football player. She provides great detail on the self-talk and visualization processes she engages in before heading onto the field. She also has advice for other women on how to enter and navigate male-dominated spaces. Bella also highlights the need for all to overcome the fear to pursue bold endeavors. In December 2022, Bella made history again when she became the first female high school football player to sign an NIL deal. Notably, in California, high school athletes can monetize their name, image and likeness. Bella tells us why she's partnering with KeyWise and why mental health is a priority to her. Finally, Bella shares her vision for football and how to get more girls in it. We live in a time in which mental health is prioritized, often times, above all else. Self-care has become a blanket statement for all things self-help, self-serving, and stress relieving. We have an obligation to take care of ourselves, that is, to steward the mind, body, and soul (among other things) that God has entrusted to us. I believe that the body has much to teach us about the mind and soul. The way we care for our bodies and physical health comes down to three major things: nutrition, exercise, and rest. Our culture tells us that mental health is solely dependent on rest. I think that's nonsense. In today's episode, you'll hear about the fitness, rest, and nutrition needed for a healthy mind. Be your best! This is Episode #192 of the Seeking Excellence Podcast. If you're new to our show, each of the previous 12 seasons have had a different theme, a different format, and a different approach to unpacking and dissecting both individual and organizational performance. These Rewind episodes take a look back at some my favorite shows in case you missed them the first time around… or in case you'd like to give them a second listen.I hope you enjoy, and more importantly, I hope this Rewind episode helps you Raise Your Game!In this episode I am joined by my friend David DeWolf, the President and CEO of 3Pillar Global and the best-selling author of The Product Mindset. David and I unpacked a story about the first and only time I ran a marathon… and how the lesson I learned about not allowing negative self-talk to undermined you directly applies to business leadership. You'll hear this story as I performed it in studio. What makes the best the best? Ultimately the best are where they are because of the mindset, habits, and rituals they have—both in their respective “arenas,” but also in private, during the unseen hours. Success isn't something that happens to you. It's something you attract and you create. Successful people do the little things better than everyone else because they know all the big things arise from them. The highest performers in all walks of life have taken full ownership. They got to where they are and have stayed there because they have chosen to establish, tweak and repeat positive habits. They understand that you can't be selective when it comes to excellence, that how we do anything is how we do everything.Sustain Your Game teaches you how to bring your A game to every area of your life. With advice from top CEOs, journalists, social scientists, and more, you'll learn the framework for how to beat stress, stagnation, and burnout. I laced up my high tops and hit the hardwood with Dan Engelstad, the head men's basketball coach at Mt. St. Mary's University. This episode was very special, as I was Dan's basketball performance coach 20 years ago when he was a stand-out player at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, MD. We've kept in touch ever since and I am so proud of the coach, husband, and father Dan is today. This season I'm exploring what high performers do behind the scenes. I've been enjoying fascinating conversations with professional stand-up comedians, magicians, actors, rappers, dancers, YouTubers, athletes, coaches, and everything in between to find out exactly what they do behind the curtain – when the cameras are off and the arenas are empty – to work towards mastery of their craft and to prepare themselves to perform at a world class level. I hope you find their insights, perspectives, and personal strategies as helpful as I do and use what they share to continue to Raise Your Game.Thank you so much for investing your time with us. I hope we helped you Raise Your Game and provided useful insight on how you can maximize your time and effort. If you found this episode helpful, would you be open-minded to supporting the show? Would you be kind enough to share it with a friend or colleague? Would you take 30 seconds and leave us a rating and review?
