Learning from your own mistakes is a tough but necessary part of personal growth. Whether it's in business or your personal life, recognizing when you've made a mistake and course-correcting for next time a situation arises is a critical part of continuous improvement. But how do we apply that principle broadly to learn as a community? How can we apply this at the leadership level to make sure the next generation doesn't make the same mistakes as the previous one? Forward 48 is here to help us do just that.On this episode, Richie sits down with Ian Abston, Thelma Sias, and Fiesha Lynn Bell to talk all things Forward 48.In addition to telling the story of how Forward 48 came about, they'll cover how Milwaukee can better retain top talent, develop its young leaders, and grow as a city from a social, cultural, and economic standpoint. They also discuss the importance of inclusion when it comes to leadership, and how Forward 48 is cultivating the next generation of leaders from a variety of ages, genders, ethnic backgrounds, and perspectives.
How will Milwaukee capture otherwise lost knowledge and transform regional leadership? Ian Abston, founder of Forward 48 has an answer. This episode, also with Betsy Brenner, former president & publisher at The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, takes Adam and Steve on journey into this new accelerator for leaders. From networking to experiential learning, Forward 48 comes with tons of FREE perks, too! Take a listen, then jump over to www.forward48.com to learn more and apply today.
Going into 2020, the stars were aligned for the city of Milwaukee to shine in the national spotlight. Highly anticipated events like the DNC, Ryder Cup, Summerfest, a long Bucks playoff run, and more were all on the horizon. Then, the pandemic hit and it changed everything. Instead of experiencing an economic boom, local businesses had to picot and adapt to survive. Additionally, we saw a prevalent BLM movement in the city of Milwaukee, where protests lasted for weeks in light of the George Floyd tragedy. We went through the most polarizing election of all time, but on the bright side, the Hoan Bridge finally got lit and, just this week, Giannis signed his extension, ending the year on a positive note and leaving the city feeling good about its future! I've been lucky to cover all of these topics on the GoGedders and in this episode we look back on everything that unfolded. Guests in this episode include: DJ Hines, Christine Specht, Ian Abston, Khalif El-Amin, Judge Derek Mosley, John Burke, Mike Malatesta, Michael Hostad and Greg Marshall.
A bright light in the dark. There have been plenty of challenges in 2020, but one dream in particular, became reality for one of Milwaukee's most influential voices. In this episode of Deff-initely Milwaukee, Carl Deffenbaugh talks with Ian Abston. Ian and his partners completed a four-year journey to light the entire Hoan Bridge with thousands of state-of-the-art LEDs that put on a show each and every night. But a beautiful sight isn't all this bridge offers -- Carl and Ian talk about the impact this project could have on attracting people to Milwaukee. You'll also learn about how Ian first got involved in the city and shares a few great stories about a New Year's Eve party that didn't quite go as planned at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the one time he picked up a hitchhiker in the rain, only to find out if was one of Milwaukee's biggest names. Plus, you'll hear how the pandemic could make Brew City the next 'it' destination.

Ian Abston and Michael Hostad talk with Dale about their work to light up Milwaukee’s Hoan Bridge entirely through crowdfunding efforts. The two believe illuminating the bridge will create a celebratory Milwaukee landmark that will attract talented newcomers to the city.
The Hoan Bridge is a major transportation artery and a city landmark. These distinctive arches welcome ships from Lake Michigan, speed drivers in and out of downtown, and even serve as cover for some Summerfest shows. Giving it dynamic LED lighting at night could launch night views of the bridge and city to the next level. But how can you navigate layers of government bureaucracy, mobilize support, secure funding, and get it done? Ian Abston talks with Eric Paulsen about how non-profit "Light The Hoan" is working to light up Milwaukee nights and give anyone a chance to leave their mark on this major span. Had to slap the "explicit" tag on this episode due to a few drops of the word sh*t on what is probably one of the funnier shows. Plenty of insight as well on what Milwaukee has to offer visitors and residents (sports, arts, food, etc.) from two well-known community leaders. For more on their project, go to https://lightthehoan.com.
