As Dry January calls closing time, it's a unique chance to consider the role alcohol plays in people's lives. That's especially true in Milwaukee, the Brew City, and across the state of Wisconsin. Within the last few years, multiple nonalcoholic bars have opened. In that same time, they've also closed.

Louisiana fascist Republicans will force Christianity on all school children. Slurring, thick-tongued Trump pretended he loved Milwaukee, even though he said otherwise, and blathered he would stay in the Brew City during the RNC. According to the co-editor-in-chief of Vanity said Shitler struggled with the chronology of events and "could not keep a straight thought" during an series of interviews. Tech Nazi Elon Musk slithered upon a figurative cross and complained about alleged attempts on his life. The platform formerly known as Twitter has been losing tons of value and their new payment platform probably won't help. A scientist in Finland made protein out of thin air. The House ethics committee heard testimony about possible pedo-antics by GOP Sith Matt Gaetz. On today's episode, we will be chatting with the City of San Francisco Police Sergeant and Bestselling Author, Adam Plantinga. He is currently a sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department assigned to street patrol. This interview was near and dear to my heart because Adam started his LE career as a Milwaukee copper, just like me. We never worked together, but we sure have known the same characters and chewed the same dirt.In today's episode we discuss:· Why and where Adam got interested in law enforcement?· A special thank you to the “Cop Doc” Dr. Ellen Kirschman for introducing us.· From the land of Dirty Harry and The Streets of San Francisco. Are there any memorabilia from the shows in the San Francisco PD?· How long before Adam made the switch to SFPD from the Milwaukee PD?· Why did he switch departments? · Biggest differences between MPD and SFPD, including rank.· Is there still the iconic rank of Inspector in the SFPD today?· His hot new novel, Ascent.· The use of popular thriller tropes in this novel.· How Ascent got picked up by Universal Television for a future television series.Check out Adam's website with links to all of his socials and books.Check out the new Cops and Writers YouTube channel!Check out Field Training (Brew City Blues Book 1)!!Enjoy the Cops and Writers book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. Brew City wastes no time throwing its first beer-focused challenge at the Season 21 field. Nobody seems excited about cooking with hops in the Quickfire challenge, but the chefs who go sweet win favor with guest judge, Top Chef champion, and Friend of PYK, Joe Flamm. The chefs then split into teams to prepare a progressive dinner in the historic Miller Caves of dishes inspired by salty bar snacks — which Tom and Kevin rank. The team with more fine-dining, tweezer-head chefs struggles against their opponents, whose sensibilities are more rustic. Tom takes issue with the judges' final verdict, while Kevin celebrates the winning chef's bold risk. Your intrepid co-hosts decided to do something pretty special this week. Fate (and some pretty cool stuff they can't talk about yet) has seen fit to bring them together for their second in-person episode of the year! This time, Saint is in Jim's neck of the woods, mere moments from Milwaukee, WI. And that means beer, cheese, and debauchery are mandatory pursuits. Since there are so many (*burp*) unique delicacies that can only be had regionally, Jim takes it upon himself to stuff Saint silly, and then quiz him about his reactions to such hyper-local specialties as New Glarus beer, Blue Moon ice cream, fried cheese curds and more. So, so much more. So join them as they indulge in their second-favorite deadly sin all over Brew City.

Wisconsin is one of those places that lives in the imaginations of Americans largely in the form of caricature. Full of cheese curd eating, beer loving, Harley riders, the state rarely gets the respect it deserves. In reality, Wisconsin is all of those things and so much more. I grew up 90 minutes south of Milwaukee but it might as well have been a totally different country. Chicago is Midwestern in the way that non-alcoholic beer is beer, in name only. Wisconsin, on the other hand, is pure Midwest. From Friday night fish frys to the homey environs of supper clubs and a relatively laid back sense of community and good spiritedness, Wisconsin is the heart of the Midwest for me.So today I'm excited that in the latest episode of Beer Travelers we're making our way to one of the great overlooked gems in the American craft beer scene: Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To help lead us through this town's glorious and storied beer scene we have two fantastic local guides. Chris Drosner is a long-time beer writer and editor covering Wisconsin and Milwaukee specifically. He's written the Beer Baron column for the Wisconsin State Journal, the daily newspaper in the capital city of Madison. And it's through this column that I first got to know Chris and his take on the Madtown and greater Wisconsin beer scenes. More recently, Chris moved to Milwaukee, where he is now the executive editor of Milwaukee Magazine. Joining Chris to help us on our tour of Brew City this week is Bobby Tanzillo, the senior editor at OnMilwaukee.com, where he writes about beer, whiskey, history, and architecture. He's the author of a half dozen history books, including several about beer and its history in Milwaukee. And he's a great resource for all the beer happenings in the city. While Chris and Bobby compete for scoops on the latest beer news in Milwaukee, it's clear they have a deep respect for one another and they are the perfect pair to help us navigate this jewel on Lake Michigan. For original articles or to read the vast archives or to check out All About Beer. follow us on Twitter @allaboutbeer and Instagram @allaboutbeer. This is the company responsible for all kinds of great t-shirts, hoodies, pens, you name it. This is no small operation. They have worked with Miller Coors and Disney just to name two. So given all this, Kurt and I wanted to get these guys on because 1.) they are a good hang. And 2.) how you market this kind of company. We got it…and a lot more including how much this space has changed. And how logo wear is every bit as important as any other channel in a company's overall marketing mix. The New Year's Eve crowd will learn about Milwaukee!
This week's guest is Mark Waldoch, a Milwaukee mainstay who has been a prominent part of the city's music scene for more than 25 years. Over that quarter-century span, the multi-instrumentalist and owner of Brew City's most booming voice has released outstanding material with The Celebrated Workingman, under his own name and with his current Hallelujah Ward project. Along the way, he's contributed harmonies and horns to a wide variety of songs by other local musicians and he's been relied upon to be a go-to local opener for an incredible list of touring acts coming through town. Oh, and he's also a major part of Milwaukee's holiday music tradition with an array of Christmastime concerts most years. Earlier this week, Waldoch made a long-overdue stop (our bad!) at the My First Band studio, where he talked to host Tyler Maas about all of the above, as well as his upcoming yuletide show at The Cooperage, his amazing and arduous life story, and many memories from his lengthy tenure in the local scene. As Waldoch looked back on his artistic origin, he also treated listeners to anecdotes about touring the U.S. and Europe with Volcano Choir, working at the iconic Atomic Records store, and playing with the likes of Bright Eyes and Interpol before they became worldwide sensations. There's also an incredible and cathartic tale about the time he quit a particularly bad service industry job! My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Hallelujah Ward ("86,000").
