2644 - Discussing Andrew Cuomo's Reign Over New York And Whether He Can Keep His Crown w/ Ross Barkan

Sam and Emma host journalist Ross Barkan, writer of the Political Currents by Ross Barkan newsletter on Substack, to discuss his recent book The Prince: Andrew Cuomo, Coronavirus, and the Fall of New York, which covers the rollercoaster of Governor Andrew Cuomo's legacy since the start of the pandemic. They start with a mention of the recent report from Attorney General Letitia James's Office confirming myriad instances of sexual harassment by the governor, before they backtrack to start at the beginning of his legacy in working with his father, former Governor of New York Mario, who helped him to achieve a high ranking position in the Clinton administration. Ross, Emma, and Sam explore how Mario's administration reflected many qualities of Andrew's, including a combative relationship with the left, and set the stage for Andrew's clamor for power in New York State. This was followed by multiple terms in which he sought to bolster moderate and Republican power in the State Senate, through the creation of the Independent Democratic Conference to create a bipartisan majority, shifting progressive Democrats out of power. They explore the development of Andrew's role on the national stage, from a middling governor with mediocre approval ratings to a pandemic hero, over the course of the first year of the pandemic as he stood in juxtaposition with President Trump – all despite largely taking on similar positions are the offset, including undermining the value of testing and underemphasizing the risk – before they move onto the crumbling of his pedestal following the reports on his coverup of mass deaths in nursing homes, and the recent reports regarding his sexual harassment. They wrap up the interview looking forward at the potential impeachment of Cuomo, or if he might continue to run for a fourth term if he holds onto office, before Sam and Emma conclude the first half with an update on Cori Bush's protest of the lifting of the eviction moratorium as the pandemic reaches another peak. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki joins Sam and Emma as they delve a little deeper into the official report regarding Andrew Cuomo's sexual harassment, and what it might look like moving forwards, particularly given Cuomo's track record of successfully avoiding repercussions (see: the Moreland Commission), and discuss the possibilities in who could fill his seat, before they look into the insanely Cuomo-typical PowerPoint defense he levied against today's reports. They also cover Matt Walsh's “owning property is slavery” argument and its complementary “everything is the holocaust” discussion Republicans are having around the pandemic, Manchin and Graham's bipartisan effort in boosting Covid spread in Congress, and developing debates around the infrastructure bill(s), plus, your calls and IMs! Big changes in Albany this year as the Republicans and IDC – the Independent Democratic Conference – are out -- and a (hopefully) functioning and progressive legislature under Democratic control is in. About a year ago – on BCR #10 -- we talked with the women leading two important grassroots political organizations that were key in those changes – True Blue NY and Indivisible Harlem. For this BCR episode we invited two other women who were key in getting the IDC out -- Mia Pearlman a creator and leader of True Blue NY and Nan Faessler of Indivisible Harlem. We also talked about the new initiative for a Green NY City and State -- the Climate and Community Protection Act [CCPA]. Since posting this episode. we received great news from Nan that the CCPA has passed the State Legislature with a slight change. Governor Cuomo wanted to put his stamp on the bill, and so he had one word added to the title. It is now the "Climate LEADERSHIP and Community Protection Act." Silly governor. And check-out https://350.org/ mentioned by Nan.Again -- we recorded at Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar. It took one month in 2009 for order to be restored in the state Senate following an attempted power grab that upset the status quo in the chamber. But the ramifications, which are covered on the final installment of the Times Union's "Tales from the Coup" podcast series, would shape the immediate future of the Senate and have effects that remain for the new Democratic majority. The episode follows the demise of the two renegade Democratic senators who plotted with GOP senators and examines how the rise of the Independent Democratic Conference in 2011 was informed by the chaos in the chamber during the preceding years.

Today on the Eye on NY podcast:  A recap of the New York primary elections Thursday. It was a big night for the Democratic establishment in statewide races, but progressives picked up key wins in state legislative primaries.  A breakdown of the unofficial results (as of Friday morning) and how each candidate in a statewide primary performed. Gov. Andrew Cuomo won the Democratic primary over Cynthia Nixon. Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul rebounded after an early deficit and defeated New York City Councilman Jumaane Williams. And in the four-way primary for attorney general, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James won the Democratic nomination. Zephyr Teachout was the runner-up.  I'll also share the latest on the 53rd Senate District race. Rachel May challenged state Sen. David Valesky, a former member of the Independent Democratic Conference, for the Democratic nod. She holds a 606-vote lead after the election night tally. There are more than 900 absentees that have been returned.

Welcome to a special crossover edition of our pod with Nathan Rubin of Millennial Politics. We’re joined by Alessandra Biaggi, a candidate for New York State Senate and a longtime member of our community. Alessandra is challenging the leader of breakaway Democrats known as the IDC, who sold out their district for personal gain and ceded control to Republicans. Her incumbent opponent, State Senator Jeff Klein, is the leader of the Independent Democratic Conference (or IDC). He ran as a Democrat, was elected as a Democrat, and purports to govern as a Democrat, while caucusing with Republicans. As a result of the IDC and Republican control in the New York State Senate, progressive legislation passed by the New York State Assembly dies time and time again. Democrats have a Super-Majority in the Assembly, but year after year, legislation that should be a hallmark of a “progressive” state like New York never reached the Governor’s desk and never becomes law. Alessandra is running on a platform of Affordable Housing, expanding the electorate through small “d” democratic reforms, criminal justice reform, women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ civil rights, and more.

Mobilize producer Betsy Nagler interviews New York State Senate candidate Alessandra Biaggi about her campaign to unseat Jeff Klein, the former leader of the Independent Democratic Conference. While the IDC's eight members just made a deal to reunite with the mainline Senate Democrats, they have spent that past eight years caucusing with Senate Republicans and blocking progressive legislation in order to gain money and power for themselves. Biaggi is running against these "fake Democrats" as part of a wave of new, progressive candidates now stepping up to run for office throughout the country, and fighting back against the Trump agenda. https://www.mobilizehere.com/podcast/mobilize---episode-16---new-leadership-and-new-solutions/
