In January, the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act (or the Fashion Act) was unveiled: a bill many are calling a "groundbreaking" and "historic" step towards bringing accountability to the fashion industry and holding the biggest brands accountable for their environmental and social impacts. If signed into law, the Fashion Act would require all major apparel and footwear companies that generate $100 million in global revenue and do business in the state of New York to map their supply chain, engage in mandatory due diligence, identify and address risks, and set and meet science-based targets. What does the Fashion Act mean for the fashion industry? Is disclosure enough to truly hold the industry accountable? Now that the bill has been introduced, what happens now? New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi joined SFF founder Brittany Sierra during the 2022 Sustainable Fashion Forum to discuss. Hear their convo here. #EXPERT Maxine Bédat - Setting The New Standard of The Industry[ENG] Big polluters must be constrained by lawMaxine Bédat is the kind of person that dive deep into any subject. Entrepreneur, researcher, and advocate, she was a pioneer launcher of a sustainable items marketplace and company Zady, revealing in details the impact of the products. An approach so bold and unconventional that the time, that media and brands came to her to ask to share such interesting data and brilliant methods. Therefore, she realized the problem wasn't actually so much the lack of sustainable brands but more the fact that big players ignore their impacts, remain unpunished for producing giant quantities of cheap clothing and don't know where to start when they want to improve themselves. So was born the New Standard Institute, a global community driving the fashion industry to achieve science-based environmental & social targets, through counseling and the establishment of laws. NSI is the voice of the experts and a bridge to the law. Maxine works on a new one, the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, aiming to hold fashion brands accountable for the environmental and social impacts of their manufacturing, sponsored by State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi and Assemblywoman Dr. Anna Kelles. Just as Maxine Bédat, we believe legislation is needed to help good companies, currently at a competitive disadvantage, investing money where others are not. This episode is full of humanity and precious pro insights, in the image of Maxine. It was also a very selfish opportunity for me to meet a role model. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Alessandra Biaggi retracted her prior endorsement of incumbent Rep. Eliot Engel. While she had previously publicly declared that, "2020 was not the time to primary incumbent Democrats", the events of the last few months have changed her perspective. The senator spoke passionately about the lack of leadership from many officials for the underprivileged and hard-hit communities that they are elected to serve, and critiqued misleading statements and half-hearted support from those same electeds throughout COVID, and now into the protests against police brutality.  "We have an obligation to fight like hell to ensure our communities are represented by someone who wants to be there. We need someone who is focused on the future. So, my opinion is that my full support behind [Rep. Eliot] Engel just is not there right now. I am still making a decision about what to do formally, but I cannot stand behind somebody who refuses to stand for a district that is in great need during this transformational moment of change." Senator Biaggi didn't just take shots at other elected officials, though. She came prepared with ample policy proposals on how to best reform the NYPD, mitigate systemic racism, and eliminate police brutality. Biaggi spoke in-depth on reforms like reducing the budget of the NYPD, repealing "50-a" to increase transparency around police personnel records, mandating racial bias training for public officials and including age appropriate unconscious bias classes in both public and private schools for children.

Alessandra came out of nowhere, it seemed, with the last state senate election and strongly defeated an incumbent Democratic senator. She has had numerous successes with legislating since being elected on November 6, 2018. We have a great conversation in which Alessandra discusses some of her personal struggles that enable her to face the challenges of her senate run. Alessandra also provides some real nuggets of wisdom about the political process itself and she takes a hard stance on the recent crackdown of subway fare evaders. As a resident of the district she represents I can attest that she is working very hard to help our district. New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi can be found on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Here are some links to some helpful items mentioned in the show: New Leaders Council The Pied-à-terre tax is a proposed tax on a second, luxury home that could potentially generate $800 million a year in revenue for New York. Silver v. Pataki is the case that was referred to by the Senator surrounding the New York state budget process. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fringe-voices/support

Afterwards, she had an identity crisis and left government, until the #MeToo movement inspired her to come forward with her story. At the very same time, Klein found himself with a primary challenger who would eventually unseat him: Alessandra Biaggi.

Zellnor Myrie is running for New York State Senate in District 20. If you caught our last pod with Alessandra Biaggi, you’re already familiar with New York’s strange State Senate. For seven years, a group of turncoat politicians have run as Democrats, been elected as Democrats, and immediately caucused with Republicans in the New York State Senate. They formed a conference, called the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) to vote as a bloc, ceding control of the chamber and preventing progressive policies from being sent to Governor Cuomo’s desk. Everything from codifying Roe v. Wade at the state-level, to passing Universal Health Care, or the DREAM Act, and even to more local issues like Affordable Housing, Speed Cameras, and the funding of Public Schools, has been blocked as a result of the IDC. Enter Zellnor Myrie. State Senator Jesse Hamilton, the incumbent in Zellnor Myrie’s district, is one of the IDC Members, and Zellnor has had enough. He thinks the time is now to knock him out. With the typical machinery at-hand, politicians are turning on each other trying to either oust the incumbent, or keep him in power. Zellnor is finding himself right in the middle of it all, and he’s staying focused on the mission at hand and rolling with the punches. On today’s pod with Nathan Rubin of Millennial Politics, we talk with Zellnor about his race for the State Senate against incumbent Jesse Hamilton and the IDC.

Welcome to a special crossover edition of our pod with Nathan Rubin of Millennial Politics. We’re joined by Alessandra Biaggi, a candidate for New York State Senate and a longtime member of our community. Alessandra is challenging the leader of breakaway Democrats known as the IDC, who sold out their district for personal gain and ceded control to Republicans. Her incumbent opponent, State Senator Jeff Klein, is the leader of the Independent Democratic Conference (or IDC). He ran as a Democrat, was elected as a Democrat, and purports to govern as a Democrat, while caucusing with Republicans. As a result of the IDC and Republican control in the New York State Senate, progressive legislation passed by the New York State Assembly dies time and time again. Democrats have a Super-Majority in the Assembly, but year after year, legislation that should be a hallmark of a “progressive” state like New York never reached the Governor’s desk and never becomes law. Alessandra is running on a platform of Affordable Housing, expanding the electorate through small “d” democratic reforms, criminal justice reform, women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ civil rights, and more.

In the months after the 2016 election, 16,000 women contacted the non-profit Emily's List to learn about running for office, compared to 1,000 the entire prior year. Alessandra Biaggi is one of these new faces in politics. As a young girl she declared at the dinner table that she wanted to be president. She went on to law school, worked as a lawyer for state of NY and then as Deputy National Operations Director for Hillary Clinton's campaign. After the election, she turned despair into action when she realized that in her own backyard, there was a group of senators who were Democrats on paper, yet caucused with Republicans on issues such as immigration and women's rights. She's running a grassroots campaign against a fourteen year incumbent and “kingpin” of NY State politics. We discuss the impostor syndrome that comes with this high-stakes race, speaking up against injustice, coddling kids versus letting them fail, and her advice for center of left men who are all for equality, but fear that the #MeToo movement happening too quickly. This week, a long-time women's rights attorney Gloria Allred discusses the allegations of sexual misconduct against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and we pick her brain about what it means to be a feminist. Also, we'll hear from New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi about her own experiences with the governor. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, about 7,500 claims of sexual harassment were submitted in 2019; this includes reports from the private sector and state and local government workplaces. It represents a 10% increase from 2015. According to a 2018 survey by the nonprofit “Stop Street Harassment,” 81 percent of women and 43 percent of men have experienced some form of sexual harassment during their lifetime. More than half of those women reported unwelcome sexual touching. So it's not a total surprise that the state capitol in Albany, New York has found itself in the middle of another reckoning over sexual harassment this spring. Long-time women's rights attorney Gloria Allred is representing one of several women accusing New York Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual misconduct. The allegations vary from under the shirt groping to kisses on the cheek and probing questions about sexual preferences. The third-term Democrat denies touching anyone inappropriately. Alessandra Biaggi is a Democratic New York State Senator representing parts of Westchester County and New York City. She says she experienced bullying while working for Cuomo and has been sexually harassed in her career, which is why she feels so passionate about The Sexual Harassment Working Group -- a group of former legislative staffers from Albany. In September of 2020, the United States Government Accountability Office released a report on workplace sexual harassment. It is 83 pages long and mostly focuses on data from federal workers. For good reason – the report found that all of the data on sexual harassment uses different types of questions and metrics. So it's like comparing apples to oranges. Or rather, inappropriate touches to inappropriate comments over varying lengths of recall. The GAO included results from national surveys, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Pew Research Center, and MSPB's 2016 Merit Principles Survey, based on respondents from a random sample of federal employees. It found that the structure of the question and the recall period varies such that the results indicate anywhere from just 4% of women experiencing workplace harassment to 52%. The study concludes the EEOC needs to develop a national survey that includes sex-based harassment. Saying, QUOTE “The federal government could play a valuable role in realizing a nationwide survey to illuminate the magnitude of the problem of sexual harassment, including the costs to employees and employers, and to inform business and government policy decisions to reduce its occurrence.” As of April 2021, no such survey has been developed.
