A member of the New York State Assembly has proposals for how to regulate artificial intelligence. The AI Training Data Transparency Act would require AI firms to make their safety testing protocols visible, and it would protect whistleblowers who call attention to AI dangers. Is it enough? The Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act would require developers to meet certain safety and security requirements before launching their platforms. Our guests include the Assemblymember who has introduced the legislation. Our guests: Assemblymember Alex Bores, District 73 Max Irwin, founder of Max.io

We have a cool one for you today, a conversation with New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Currently, Mamdani is a member of the New York State Assembly. He’s a Democratic Socialist running in the Democratic primary against a pretty busy slate of contenders, and he’s polling second to former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who only recently entered the race. Now Mamdani was the first candidate to hit the fundraising threshold for city matching funds—setting it in record time—and doing it primarily through small dollar donations. His campaign is extremely organized, and it’s galvanized New Yorkers in every borough with a stunning clarity of message. Now, in many ways, to us, at least, Zohran has captured the zeitgeist as it feels like his campaign is a proxy for the discontent felt not just in urban areas, but throughout the country. So it’s our great pleasure to welcome to the show Zohran Mamdani. Hey there, music lovers.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.   I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today on the podcast, I'm happy to welcome former Congressman and current President of Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY, Brian Higgins.  After growing up in Buffalo, and graduating from Buffalo State College and Harvard University, Brian worked his way from the Buffalo Common Council through the New York State Assembly and finally, to the US House of Representatives, where he served as Democratic representative of New York's 26th congressional district for more than a decade. Brian left office in early 2024, citing what he called “a growing dysfunction in Congress” as his reason for moving on.   So why is a career politician a guest on a podcast dedicated to the majesty of music? Well, for as long as I've known him, Brian has been a passionate supporter of music & the arts. And a career in politics did nothing to dull his deep love for music.  Brian remains a true fan, one who speaks of certain concert experiences in his life as nigh on religious events. His career's second act , as the President of Shea's, places him in a position to have significant impact on music and the arts arts in our region's culture. Brian has turned his passion for music into something tangible.  Welcome to Why Music Matters,  Brian Higgins…

The state of New York took a decisive step this past Tuesday, when it temporarily relocated almost 2,000 migrants. The place chosen as their new domicile is the James Madison High School situated in Brooklyn. The movement was necessitated due to the limited suitability of the Floyd Bennett Field migrant camp following less-than-ideal weather conditions. This quick action taken by the state officials has elicited a significant ripple effect, causing shifts in daily routines. The related developments were communicated to the school district. According to the official notification circulated among families, the school will switch to online instruction mode this coming Wednesday, a move impacted by the housing of these migrants in the school's gymnasium. The sudden change was picked up by New York State Assembly candidate Colonel Thomas Sullivan, a Republican by affiliation. Colonel Sullivan expressed his disapproval in sharp terms with regards to this particular choice of location for the migrants' resettlement. He stated, 'When plans were initially announced to set up the migrant encampment at Floyd Bennett Field, it was already seen by many as a precarious situation. It seems the only people oblivious to the potential pitfalls were those in charge of the decision. The further decision to shift the people from Floyd Bennett to James Madison High School merely highlights what we recognized all along: the current setup is not viable.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Luis Miranda, one of New York, and the country's, most dynamic cross-sector leaders, with more than four decades of experience in government, business, politics and advocacy, community development, and the arts. Miranda is the founding partner of the MirRam Group, founding president of the Hispanic Federation, and board chair of the Latino Victory Fund, the Public Theater, and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance. In the words of his son Lin-Manuel, Miranda is relentless.   We begin with Miranda's childhood and formative years in Vega Alta, a small town in Puerto Rico where he was born and raised before leaving for New York to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology at NYU. Although he left Puerto Rico as a very young man, the place has remained central to his identity and family — and, as beautifully told in the award-winning HBO documentary Siempre, Luis, a place he returns to regularly, including to lead much of the rebuilding effort after hurricanes Irma and Maria.   Once settled in New York, Miranda discovered that work as a clinical psychologist didn't suit him, but the city “fit like a glove.” Inspired by his parents, who were deeply engaged in public service, Miranda became a community activist, first via nonprofit organizations, then in government when he “came to understand the role that politics can play in changing lives, making communities better.” Miranda would go on to serve in three Mayoral administrations — Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani — and became increasingly involved in local, state, and national politics, helping to elect officials to the New York City Council, the New York State Assembly, and all of New York's recent representatives in the US Senate: Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Charles Schumer, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Miranda also chairs Latino Victory, focused on building power in the Latino community by electing more Latinos to office.   We end with a discussion of the arts — and the ways in which Miranda's commitment to the arts, politics, community activism, and inclusion all come together. His many recent and large-scale arts projects include bringing Hamilton to Puerto Rico as part of the hurricane recovery effort, leading the restoration of the United Palace theater in Washington Heights, and chairing the board of The Public Theater, where he is leading its Fund for Free Theater campaign. “The arts feed the soul; they bring people together,” Miranda says. “We have to ensure they are accessible.”   Thanks for listening! This Day in Legal History: Louis XVI Put on TrialOn December 26, 1792, a significant event in legal history unfolded as Romain de Sèze, a dedicated defense attorney, stood before a French Revolutionary court to defend the deposed King Louis XVI. This trial was a pivotal moment during the tumultuous times of the French Revolution. Louis XVI, once a symbol of monarchical power, faced thirty-three serious charges, primarily centered around treason and crimes against the state. These accusations reflected the intense political and social upheaval of the era.De Sèze's defense was a remarkable effort under the circumstances, given the prevailing revolutionary fervor and the public's animosity towards the monarchy. His arguments focused on disputing the legitimacy of the charges and the authority of the court itself to try a king. Despite his efforts, the trial led to a conviction for Louis XVI. On January 15, 1793, the former king was found guilty. This trial and the subsequent events were a testament to the drastic changes in French society and governance. The execution of Louis XVI by guillotine on January 21, 1793, just days after his conviction, marked a profound shift in the balance of power. It signaled the end of absolute monarchy in France and the rise of revolutionary ideals. The trial of Louis XVI remains a critical study in legal history, illustrating the complexities of law and justice during times of political upheaval. It serves as a reminder of how legal processes can be deeply intertwined with the socio-political context of their times. In fiscal year 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) witnessed a significant decline in the number of whistleblowers receiving awards, despite an unprecedented surge in tips. The SEC received over 18,000 tips, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. However, only 68 informants were compensated, a stark contrast to the more than 100 in each of the preceding two years. This decline occurred in a period marked by a record payout to a single whistleblower, who received $279 million for exposing a $1 billion fraud at Swedish telecom LM Ericsson. The program, established under the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law following Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme, is designed to encourage reporting of financial misconduct. Since its inception, it has recovered over $6 billion and paid out nearly $2 billion to informants. In the last year alone, nearly $600 million was awarded, with significant sums going to a few individuals, including a group of seven whistleblowers who shared $104 million. However, the program faces challenges. Attorneys and participants note it is struggling under its own success, hampered by insufficient resources and staffing despite the increasing number of tips. This has led to delays in payouts and difficulties in appeal processes for whistleblowers. Additionally, there is a lack of transparency and communication from the SEC, as evidenced by the limited information shared in its annual reports and decisions to seal critical rulings or deny Freedom of Information Act requests.A 2022 Bloomberg Law investigation revealed that the SEC often exceeded its mandate for secrecy and inconsistently applied its own rules in decision-making. The whistleblower process, involving an initial vetting by the enforcement division followed by payment determination by the Office of the Whistleblower, can be lengthy, with payouts varying between 10% and 30% of recovered funds.Calls for reform have been made, urging Congress to allocate more resources to expedite the process and address issues like non-payment in cases of corporate bankruptcy. The case of whistleblowers John McPherson and John Barr, who uncovered a $1 billion fraud but were denied awards due to the bankruptcy of the involved company, highlights this issue. The purpose of the SEC whistleblower program extends beyond protecting informants; it aims to uphold the stability of U.S. financial markets. Experts suggest improvements like providing more updates to whistleblowers during lengthy investigations and ensuring adequate resources for the program to continue its critical role in enforcing U.S. securities laws.SEC Payouts to Whistleblowers Plummet Amid Record Surge in TipsIn 2024, legislative and ballot initiatives across various U.S. states will focus on raising minimum wages, influenced by past successes in this arena. States that haven't yet reached a $15 minimum wage, like Ohio and Oklahoma, are considering ballot proposals, while Michigan faces legal battles over past and future initiatives. In contrast, states with an existing $15 minimum wage, such as California and Hawaii, are pushing for even higher rates, with California proposing an $18 minimum by 2026 and Hawaii enacting a gradual increase to the same amount by 2028.A notable development in California includes industry-specific minimum wages, with $20 for fast-food workers and $25 for health-care facility workers, a strategy that labor groups may replicate in other labor-friendly states. This trend reflects a shift in labor strategies, focusing on sector-specific wage increases. However, these rising wages present challenges for employers, especially small businesses, grappling with staffing shortages and inflation. The federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25 since 2009, leading state and local governments to take the lead in wage policy. In 2024, over 20 states and around 40 cities and counties will implement increased minimum wages. Despite these efforts, some, like Sen. Bernie Sanders, advocate for a higher nationwide minimum wage, facing resistance even within the Democratic Party.Progressive groups argue that recent wage increases are insufficient for workers, particularly in high-cost areas like New York. They urge further legislative review and adjustment, citing inflation as a factor in reassessing wage goals. The "Fight for $15" movement, once a benchmark, now seems outdated as advocates push for higher minimums in several states.Several states are set to reach or exceed $15 minimum wages in 2024, with local governments in some areas already mandating over $17 per hour. In Republican-majority states, where legislatures oppose wage hikes, voter-approved ballot measures have successfully raised minimum wages, as seen in Florida and Nebraska. Upcoming ballot measures in Ohio and Oklahoma are thus a focus for groups like the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), which sees these initiatives as critical battlegrounds. Meanwhile, Virginia Democrats are attempting to raise the state's minimum wage to $15 by 2026, facing potential gubernatorial opposition.Minimum Wage Hikes Primed for Ballot, Statehouse Battles in 2024On December 26, Apple Inc. appealed a U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) decision to ban imports of its Apple Watches that infringe on patents held by medical monitoring technology company Masimo. The ban, which took effect the same day, specifically targets Apple Watches using a pulse oximeter feature for reading blood-oxygen levels, a technology incorporated since the Series 6 model in 2020. The U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, after careful consultation, chose not to reverse the ban.Apple, disagreeing with the ITC's decision, stated it is taking measures to resume sales of its Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the U.S. The company has already paused sales of these models in the U.S., but they remain available through other retailers. The ban does not affect the Apple Watch SE model or previously sold watches.Masimo has accused Apple of stealing its pulse oximetry technology and incorporating it into the Apple Watch. A previous jury trial on Masimo's allegations ended in a mistrial, and Apple has countersued Masimo for patent infringement in a separate case. This ban comes amid a broader context where the Biden administration has not vetoed ITC rulings, continuing a trend since the Obama administration. The ban is significant given that Apple's wearables, including the Apple Watch, are a substantial revenue generator for the company.Apple Watch import ban takes effect after Biden administration passes on veto | ReutersTwitter, now known as X Corp, was found to have breached contracts by not paying millions of dollars in promised bonuses to its employees, as ruled by a U.S. federal judge. Mark Schobinger, the former senior director of compensation at Twitter, filed a lawsuit against the company in June, alleging breach of contract. He claimed that Twitter, both before and after its acquisition by Elon Musk, had committed to paying employees 50% of their 2022 target bonuses, which were never disbursed.U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria denied Twitter's motion to dismiss the case, stating that Schobinger's claim plausibly constituted a breach of contract under California law. The judge affirmed that a binding contract was formed when Twitter offered the bonus in exchange for Schobinger's work. Twitter's argument, asserting that only an oral promise was made and that Texas law should apply, was rejected by the judge, who ruled that California law was applicable and dismissed Twitter's counterarguments.Since Musk's takeover, X Corp has faced numerous lawsuits from former employees and executives. These lawsuits include allegations of discrimination against various groups, including older employees, women, and workers with disabilities, as well as accusations of failing to provide advance notice for mass layoffs. The company has denied any wrongdoing in these cases. The ruling on the breach of contract regarding unpaid bonuses adds to the legal challenges faced by the company under its new management.Twitter violated contract by failing to pay millions in bonuses, US judge rules | ReutersIn my column this week, I discuss the proposed bills in the New York State Assembly and Senate aimed at repealing property tax exemptions for private universities. These bills primarily target large institutions such as New York University and Columbia University, which benefit significantly from these exemptions. However, I argue that without broader reforms, such repercussions would only lead to increased tuition fees, burdening students.I propose a progressive solution: linking university endowment taxes to tuition rates. This approach would compel universities to absorb the costs of property tax reforms while restraining tuition hikes. I emphasize the economic principle of incidence, highlighting how universities, like landlords, pass costs onto students, similar to tenants facing rent increases. This phenomenon has implications beyond fiscal aspects, potentially reshaping the socioeconomic landscape of campuses and threatening diversity.Considering the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action, universities are seeking alternative ways to maintain diversity. Increased tuition could disproportionately affect lower-income students, impacting the demographic composition of these institutions. In response, I suggest a two-pronged policy reform. Firstly, introducing a state-level tax on university endowments, akin to the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which taxes certain large endowments. Secondly, implementing a simple endowment tax that rises with tuition increases. This approach would pressure universities to find alternative funding sources instead of raising tuition. It aims to make a dollar taken from students less valuable than one sourced elsewhere. Additionally, universities should be prevented from cutting scholarships and grants as a means to counterbalance property tax expenses.Proper implementation of these reforms would require careful consideration of tuition thresholds and tax rates to discourage universities from raising tuition. The revenue generated should ideally support public university systems without disadvantaging private university students. This balanced approach seeks to ensure that tax policies do not adversely affect students' educational opportunities and financial burdens.New York College Tax Exemption Bills Need Progressive Solution Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

My name is Peter Shankman. I want to give a shout out to Skylight frame. If you guys have been around for a while, you remember Skylight and specifically the Skylight calendar. They were kind enough to sponsor Faster Than Normal last year. And you guys did such a great job and had such a great result with Skylight calendar that they're back. So what is Skylight calendar? I have one in my kitchen. It essentially is a digital calendar that connects to all of my regular calendars, like Google and everything like that. It also shows all the photos I want. It sits on my kitchen wall. And every morning, my daughter gets up, sees the tasks she has to do, sees the schoolwork she has to do. She has to do this reading, or she has to change the dog's weebly pads, whatever it is,  it's on there. The second she does it, she runs back to the frame and she's the calendar, and she clicks it and it goes away. She loves it. It keeps us on track. It keeps us together. You can find them  www.skylightframe.com Use code Petershankman. They'll get you a nice discount. It is the greatest thing. We have no more fights. We have no more arguments anymore. She does what she has to do because she sees it on the calendar every morning. And when we're not looking at it, it just shows awesome photos of us and our dog and all of our trips and stuff like that. So strongly recommend it. Skylightframe.com. Check out the calendar. Use code. Peter Shankman you'll get a nice discount. Peter Shankman [00:02:01]:  All right, who are we talking to today? We're talking to Lisa Navarro. Lisa is an MS in special education. She's an SDA award winning educator. We're talking about education sake. She's a behavioral specialist. She's published authors of children's books. She's music, done music. She's done teacher resources. She provides training. I don't know what she doesn't do. Apparently, she's also a spy in 14 different countries and can kill you with just one pinky. So it's very cool. She has a podcast called Student Success Beyond Expectations, and she's a therapy dog named Rosie. That's obviously the most important part to me. But Lisa, welcome to the podcast. Lisa [00:02:34]: Thank you so much for having me. Peter, I'm so excited to be here with you. Peter Shankman [00:02:38]: So tell us your story. How did you A, get into this and B, how did you start working with children with special needs? Lisa [00:02:46]: Well, I guess I started with how did I get involved with children with special needs? I think it was always in me. I wanted to help people. And so when I was going through college, I kind of just kind of meandered a little bit. I love the deaf world and hearing. And then I ended up changing my major that allowed me this certification for special education. Zero to 21 at the time. I'm old also for gen ed k to six. But Peter, what I realized the first day of my first real job as a classroom teacher was not only do I not know what I'm doing and how to help these kids, but the even more sad part is no one else around me was able to. So when I say these kids, I said I want to teach children who were then classified emotionally disturbed. So I had all the behavioral kids and I was at a complete loss. It was at that point in time I said, wow, you know what? I need to either figure this out for these kids because they need me or I need to bail because I'm not going to be good enough for them. Peter Shankman [00:04:04]: Right. It's a tough decision to come to when you realize that basically you have to change virtually everything. Lisa [00:04:12]: It really was sincerely. I cried from this is back in like gosh, when did I start? 1990, 719 96. It's been a while. Lisa [00:04:21]: But I've cried before too. But anyway, yeah, I cried from September through December. I mean, I had children who would kick, bite, hit some that were abused. They made the newspaper a foster child. One would bang their head so hard on the concrete and actually join school with his forehead already kind of curved because it was something that he had been doing for years. And I was teaching children four years old through seven all in the same class. So it was kindergarten, first and second grade. So it was quite the challenge. But you know something? I believe that when we do things for the right reason and we become inspired, then we empower ourselves and the are ways to do that. Even if it's not quite the way of the system that we're in. But we can overcome those challenges to help kids. Peter Shankman [00:05:16]: I imagine that it's incredibly gratifying. Lisa [00:05:21]: You know what's really gratifying, and I say this honestly, very humbling, is that throughout the years you had mentioned that I wrote books, add, I've got these programs and whatnot my career had been a special education teacher, behavior specialist for almost ten years. Back into the classroom. I'm back to being behavior specialist within the district, plus having cold behavior consulting where I see clients and I provide professional development for educators and for parent, of course, because they need to be involved. But what's the most gratifying is knowing that the time and years add efforts spent on researching peer reviewed articles and then creating trainings and tools to help children are working. That is the most gratifying thing ever because I feel like it's putting the pieces together for them, and when they're happy and they feel empowered, then that's what it's really all about for me.   Peter Shankman [00:06:28]: Tell me what it's like to deal with parents. When I was growing up and ADHD didn't really exist, there was special education. It was literally this is the era of the special ed short bus back in the, which of course we don't refer to as now. But when you deal with parents, I often wonder what it's like for a parent that has to sort of get the news than the child is either neurodiverse or needs special attention or whatever. And a lot of parents I've talked to say that this is sort of just dropped in their lab. Right. They're given this news and they're not really given many resources from the school or from the teachers or whatever they say, yeah, you might want to get them evaluated. Well, how do we do that? That's good luck on you. What has to change for that? Lisa [00:07:22]: I can't believe you're actually asking this. You just opened up a whole can of worms, Peter. I hope you're okay with that. Peter Shankman [00:07:29]: Go for it. All you. Lisa [00:07:30]: So listen, my everything in this world is to create a paradigm shift in the pedagogy of teaching. And I have been a staunch advocate in every single way to be able to do this, and it involves parents. So here's what I propose. I propose that children need to learn how to learn so they can understand what's being taught to them. Okay, so what does that mean? That means that educators and parents need to learn the cognitive skills in how to learn so children can engage in what's called, you know, goal oriented behaviors. We need to teach towards children's ability to self regulate we in the classroom and then support that at home. We don't need to be teaching them just the standards and curriculum. It's obviously not enough. These kids need to know that they can overcome challenges by using positive self talk, identifying that they're off task and they're not focused. Okay, well, how do we focus? So honestly, that's where my training tools come in. That's where my parent workshops come in. That's where my educator workshops come in, and they're all aligned. So education needs to now meet finally with research from years ago that we need to support executive functioning skills to support self regulation in the classroom and couple it and integrate it with social emotional learning, and it becomes part of our daily teaching and style of teaching. Peter Shankman [00:09:03]: What do you think it is about the system currently that makes it so reluctant to change. Lisa [00:09:12]: So I think we do have some inspired leaders. I think we have very well intended people too, who are in leadership positions. However, I still believe that there's two things here. I think that there's a disconnect between what the know and what is really truly needed. And also what I'm talking about here is I'm talking about integrating psychology and education and it truly hasn't happened in public schools. And so it's kind of also the unknown. Does that make sense?   Peter Shankman [00:09:48]: Yeah, it does. I think that a lot of times, more often than not, you get stuck in a situation where the system or the department or whatever says, well, that's the way we've always done it and it seems to be working well, it's not working, but it's easier to stay the course. Add it is to change. Change is always scary. Where have you found the best success when working with children, parents, teachers, whatever? What makes a teacher successful in understanding that children learn in different ways?   Lisa [00:10:20]: First of all, I believe it's the passion, right? They need to be passionate. Teaching now more than ever is so hard. It's a lot of micromanagement, we've got a lot of behaviors, a lot of academic achievements, gaps. There's a lot working against the teachers now. So I than first, that passion is number one because that's going to allow them to be open to learning new things. And I think it's also presenting this type of information in ways like I do. You know what I do if you read my presentations, Peter, I have real classroom footage of students learning and applying the information. So it's not theory. There's so many programs out there now than throw around these terms executive functioning and self regulation and okay, well, show me what you're talking about in real time. Right? And a lot of these programs, it's either theory, they've done studies, they have maybe clients of their own, but have they been in it, doing it and seeing a success? I think that's huge for really making that turning point within education. Peter Shankman [00:11:28]: It's interesting because I think that you make a really good point, the concept of theoretical versus practical. I get that all the time. I see these people when I'm giving my keynotes, I see other people giving keynotes and they're like, oh, and they're telling how to handle the customer and how to do this Add. I'm like, this is all from your book, but what practical experience? I started Add sold three companies. Where's your experience in that? Where's the practical aspect of that? And I think that's something that unfortunately, with the rise of social media, TikTok and all these, you have 50 million people on TikTok explaining how to manage your ADHD, right? And 49.99 million of them are not trained in any way whatsoever, right? And so we become sort of this meme generation where we're helping people through memes. But are we really helping? Is the question. It's interesting. I'm good friends with someone. I've had her on the podcast countless times. Dr. Jennifer Hartstein. She was the CBS Early Show psychology contributor. She's a child psychologist on the show. She has her own practice in New York City, and she's constantly talking about, know, the fact that you can't diagnose or treat any condition through TikTok. It's so true. But it's amazing. What have you seen? What's the biggest thing you've seen in, say, the past ten years or since in your time doing this that you never thought you'd see? What has happened that's beneficial? What has changed in the education world that you see as an actual, very strong positive for kids?   Lisa [00:12:57]: Well, I think the identification of we've had a lot of problems, and kids have a lot of challenges, and finally we need to address them. I think COVID and we've probably heard people say this a lot before, that there were preexisting conditions, but with the rise of COVID now we can't deny it anymore. And so more schools are talking about social emotional learning. I've sat on a number of panels and discussions. I was the moderator for New York State Assembly panel and discussion, Mental Health in the Classroom and think, yeah, really cool stuff. So I think that the awareness and the push toward meeting students'needs are there. But I still think that we need to be careful, Peter, because people are putting mental health in a very wide umbrella, and it's kind of loosey goosey. And I think when we're talking about kids who have ADHD or even kids who maybe have an attention challenge or, you know what, that they feel like they're not good enough because they have a learning disability. All these cognitive skills and social emotional learning entwined together can help all of them. So I'm seeing school districts be a little bit more open now to hearing about some of these programs, what kids need, and saying, okay, we might need to be doing something different. Peter Shankman [00:14:27]: I think it's the premise also that a rising tide raises all boats, that if you're helping one segment of the population, than can be beneficial to every segment of the population. Lisa [00:14:37]: I agree. And it makes you a stronger educator. It makes you a more effective parent and communicator. It makes children in the classroom work with each other, better interpersonal skills, better modeling, because they're confident and not afraid to take a risk. They have more growth mindset. So how can any of that not be a good influence on kids who technically, quote unquote, need it or not? Right? Peter Shankman [00:15:02]: Yeah, 100%. Lisa how can people find you if they want to get more from you? There is no excuse at all for abusing those you love or anyone for that matter. Period. Our guest today is going to adding to the collection of interviews discussing these things as she shares from personal experience as well. Angela Carter is originally from Barbados. Growing up, her mother, Geraldine, was her best friend. They shared everything. But, Angela decided she wanted to pursue a new life in the United States. In unfamiliar territory and no support system in place, it was not long before she was married – to an abusive husband. Whether it was shame of allowing it to happen or fear of sharing anything at all, she went years without saying anything to her mother… Angela wished she could have shared conversations with her mother – about a lot of things… Angela is a Pastor and community advocate in upstate New York, where she has been serving the community there for over 30 years. She has been recognized for her contributions to her community with many accolades over the years, including the 2022 Woman of Distinction Citation from the New York State Assembly. She is the author of a great book that discusses the things she wishes she could have talked with her mother about, titled, “Letters to Ma Mama – All the Things I Never Said.” First question I always start with is this. What was life like for you when you started off on your own in the States? You met your ex-husband when you were in the military? You were stationed at Camp Casey, Korea? I know right where it is at. I was in Air Defense and we had a unit near there. Amen. Were there any “signs” or “red flags” that you should have paid attention to as to what that relationship would become? How long were you in the abusive relationship? How did you finally settle in New York State? Tell us about your life in Utica, NY and how you adapted to life there? Why did you write this book, “Letters to Ma Mama – All the Things I Never Said,”  and why now? This was your first book, correct? As you have been helping other victims, what signs do you share with them to be watching out for? Control? Power? What about psychological abuse - where there is no signs of physical abuse? (i.e.

Seriously, can you share with us about growing up in Barbados? You came from a large family, correct? At what age did you decide to launch out on your own and move to the United States? What was life like for you when you started off on your own in the States? You met your ex-husband when you were in the military? You were stationed at Camp Casey, Korea? I know right where it is at. I was in Air Defense and we had a unit near there. Amen. Were there any “signs” or “red flags” that you should have paid attention to as to what that relationship would become? How long were you in the abusive relationship? How did you finally settle in New York State? Folks, Angela lived through some things that nobody, man or woman, should go through. She went through it on her own. You don't have to. In the links below, you will find Angela's contact information and I'll put the links to the National Abuse Hotline as well. Angela also wishes she could have had some heartfelt conversations with her mother – but didn't. Her book, “Letters to Ma Mama – All the Things I Never Said,”  says it all. I urge you to drop down into

Emma hosts Anastasia Curwood, Professor of History at the University of Kentucky, to discuss her recent book Shirley Chisholm: Champion of Black Feminist Power Politics. Then, she's joined by labor and politics reporter Cole Stangler, to discuss the recent worker protests in France.  First, Emma runs through updates on the death toll from the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria, the brutality coverup in the Atlanta PD's Cop City killing of an activist, the role of Norfolk Southern Freight in helping kill the safety regulations that would've aided their most recent chemical derailment, and the Ohio reporter that was arrested for asking questions about the incident, before diving into Ron DeSantis absolutely charisma-free response to being called a pedophile by Donald Trump. Professor Anastasia Curwood then dives right into her work creating what may be the first true cradle-to-grave biography of one of America's most important political figures of the 20th Century, parsing through Shirley Chisholm's roots as a Brooklyn-born daughter of formerly enslaved immigrants from Barbados, immediately entering into a world of Black radicalism and political organizing, from her grandmother's emphasis on self-determination to her father's involvement with Marcus Garvey, all shaping the lead up to her political career. Next, Professor Curwood walks Emma through the start of Chisholm's entrance into politics, running with insurgent Democrat clubs to win a seat on the New York State Assembly in 1964, where she would align herself growing Civil Rights movement and garner an incredible grassroots base that, alongside the electoral realignment coming out of the Civil Rights Act, put her in an ideal position to become Brooklyn's first Black Congressperson as she road through a tough primary against former CORE Director James Farmer, before winning the general at the end of 1968. After tackling her role (both in the New York State Assembly and in the House) in fighting for a bolstered social safety net (including pushing a universal childcare bill all the way to Nixon's veto), Emma and Anastasia Curwood wrap up the interview by assessing Chisolm's relationship to the White Feminist movement of the era, including organizing greatly with women like Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem earlier in her political career, only to be completely deserted by them in her 1972 presidential run. Next, Cole Stangler gets right into the Emmanuel Macron policy that would raise the French pension age at least two years for all workers, parsing through the general consensus among the French as an attack on their labor rights, delaying access to the funds that much of the French have spent decades paying and extending their reliance on labor exploitation. After briefly contrasting the French pension program with the US systems of Social Security and Medicare, Cole Stangler wraps up the interview by tackling the constitutionally-guaranteed labor rights in France, and what this means for the protest moving forwards. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as Matt discusses his experience debating the right on “what if I like HAD to say the N-Word,” Ben Shapiro relays the good ol' “don't they teach Black people to listen to the cops” dog whistle, and Left Reckoning caller Joe calls in to discuss recommended guests for discussing China-Taiwan relations. Candace Owens flips the fuck out on “demonic” Trans people in coming to the defense of Witchcraft-promoter JK Rowling, WeWork inventor Adam Neumann reinvents Capitalism' parasitic relationship to housing, and Dave from Jamaica tackles the alienating nature of AI Porn, plus, your calls and IMs!
