Rachel Cohen Yeshurun grew up in Montreal, where she attended an Orthodox girls' school, which taught that women should never actually hold a Torah scroll. These days, however, after she moved to Israel 30 years ago, she's not only breaking that rule regularly, but teaching other women in Israel to read from the Torah as well. Every month, she attends prayer sessions for Women of the Wall, an organization that advocates for women's right to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. She's been arrested more than once by Israeli police, though the country's Supreme Court has ruled that the women are not breaking any laws or causing any harm. They are making incremental progress, having won the right to wear prayer shawls and tefillin, though the rabbi in charge of the Wall still prohibits them from using Torahs or bringing their own. Still, each month, the Women of the Wall visit the holy site, only to be disrupted by ultra-Orthodox protestors who spit on, shove and whistle at the women. It's a scene that has been playing out for years—and now, after a particularly heated encounter on May 2, inflamed by the World Zionist Organization reportedly bussing in Haredi girls to protest, Cohen Yeshurun joins The CJN Daily to talk about what it's been like to fight for women's rights at one of the most sacred spots in Judaism. What we talked about: Read about the legal struggles of the Women of the Wall Read an essay on the Women of the Wall by Rabbi Elyse Goldstein in The CJN archives Read about Bobbie Rosenfeld in The CJN archives Credits The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). We take you to the Commitment March where hundreds of thousands of people from around the nation gather at the Lincoln Memorial, 57 years after the iconic Martin Luther King speech, for the anticipated televised event, featuring speeches from Al Sharpton, the MLK family, and leaders from various cities. "Say Their Names" is a common theme of the day as speakers remember the recently fallen Black lives to police brutality. This episode shares speeches that received less airplay - those from resilient activists and parents who lost children to police force. We also talk with attendees who flew and drove hundreds miles to be there in Washington DC, representing their communities and organizations back home. We discuss their collective purpose to continue the fight for civil rights and to amplify Black voices. Episode 153: I'm in a politics mood today, having nothing to do with impeachment or the bizarre spectacle of a previous Democratic presidential candidate going seriously off the rails and accusing with no evidence, in McCarthyite fashion, another Democrat of being some sort of asset of Russia…I mean, crazy shit fills up my news dump every day. So as an antidote, I figured I'd bring to you two more progressive women candidates running for Congress against two corporate male Democrats: Eva Putzova in Arizona's 1st Congressional District and Rebecca Parson in Washington State's 6th Congressional District. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Sign up for The Working Life Podcast at: www.workinglife.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3

As we navigate the political combustion between the left and the right, we discuss issues of race, inequality and immigration that impact us as women. We talk about “The Squad" in Washington (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan). We also discuss how we can use our power to impact change, what patriotism means, and whether we are enslaving ourselves once again through activism. Also on the agenda: Ferguson, the racially charged event that—in my opinion—was the beginning of a new era in civil rights.Learn more about "Just Cillah" on cillah.com.Instagram: @justcillahSupport the show (https://www.paypal.me/justcillah)
The Heartland Mamas, Heidi Henry, former state senate candidate and Murri Briel, former candidate for US House, discuss The Squad -Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, AOC, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and why they and all the freshmen in the 2018 class are the future of the nation. We are living in the beginning of a dystopian nightmare. The racism of this administration and the Republican party can no longer be denied. The Republican party is the party of privileged entitlement. Old School vs Freshman *It’s about the money. The Squad and freshman class have outraised many old school politicians. More interesting is that the new class has taken less than 10% of all their fundraising from PACs. This makes the voice of the people that much more important in policy. That also terrifies old school politicians.*Living in the beltway bubble. Old school politicians like Nancy Pelosi understand the importance of compromise but are living in a world that no longer exists. When the rules of our government are discarded as done by this administration, something needs to change.

We will not have our regularly scheduled Friday show this week, but we just had to bring you a post-PA primary recap. It was a huge night for PA's progressive future. John Fetterman defeats Mike Stack for Lt. Gov. Stack becomes first Lt. Gov. to lose reelection. 4 DSA Candidates Make it to the general election. DSA Members Sara Innamorato and Summer Lee take down the Costa family machine in Pittsburgh. They easily defeat Dom and Paul Costa by 2-1 margins. Elizabeth Fiedler wins a four-way primary with a majority of the vote in South Philly. Kristin Seale will be facing off against DelCo Republican Chris Quinn in November. PA Democrats flip a Bucks County state house seat that Republicans have controlled for over 35 years. Helen Tai, daughter of Chinese immigrants, will be representing that seat for the next 6 months. Mary Gay Scanlon, a Ballard Spahr lawyer, defeats Johnny Doc and Bernie-backed Rich Lazer in the crowded PA 05 primary. Ballard Spahr enjoys breaking unions, supports charter schools, and works with Comcast. Progressives were torn over Bernie backing Lazer. Madeleine Dean wins her primary in the PA 04. Greg Edwards came up short in the PA-7, but at least Morganelli was defeated. Susan Wild will head to the general election in November. Scott Wagner pulls out a victory in the Republican primary for Governor. Governor Wolf's campaign comes out swinging before the ink is dry on the primary results. And, anti-immigrant Lou Barletta will take on Bob Casey this fall. Rick Saccone loses, again. He’ll have to take his waterboarding towel and free meals from lobbyists somewhere else. At least he's got his godly heritage.
A century ago, this community was just beginning to emerge from a social, economic, and cultural rut created by backward-looking politics. To move Charleston forward, we needed to embrace new, progressive ideas and policies, especially those recognizing the equal rights of women and of the African-American population.

This week we are joined by Ms Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya: Former Minister of Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities; former President of NEHAWU, and currently South Africa’s Ambassador to Egypt. We discuss some of the challenges she experienced in her role as first female president of NEHAWU, overcoming gender stereotypes to prove that women possess the attributes to be competent capable leaders. Yet this capability still tends to be overlooked in the corporate sector. We reflect on the birth of the Progressive Women’s Movement as an important milestone in South Africa’s history to unite women along common issues, and stress that women must continue to embody one voice and speak out about issues that affect them; politically, socially, legally and economically, to make meaningful contributions for the betterment of society. Tune in for more…
It seems there is no legal justification for the Justice and Correctional Services minister, Michael Masutha, to postpone the release of Oscar Pistorius on correctional supervision. Masutha indicated he will get legal opinion after the Progressive Women's Movement of South Africa handed a petition to him asking him to postpone Pistorius' release until the end of August, which is women's month. Pistorius served a tenth of his five year sentence for culpable homicide. The rest will be served under correctional supervision. Pistorius was jailed for shooting and killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013
The Progressive Women's Movement of South Africa is unhappy about Pistorius parole during the women's month and will ask the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services not to approve the parole board's recommendation. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the Convener at the Progressive Women's Movement of South Africa, Mme Jacqui Mofokeng.
This week we are joined by South Africa’s Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini. We discuss the evolution of social development in South Africa to fight poverty, with initiatives like grants, accessible education, early childhood development and efforts to radically transform the lives of ordinary women who bear the brunt of poverty. The struggle for gender equality is multi-faceted - we raise practical gender issues of water and electricity provision, the importance of understanding legislation and making laws work in women’s favour, as well as the need for greater involvement from men in the common pursuit for gender equality. Additionally, we reflect on past gender achievements such as establishing the Commission on Gender Equality, 50:50 representation in the ANC and the Progressive Women’s Movement, and remark that for future progress women should be united in support of key issues. Tune in for more….

Delhi is a proud capital of the nation - a noisy and vibrant place - but a city stained by its record on sexual violence. More rapes are recorded here than any other Indian city.
