How Manhattan's Koreatown functions as a new ethnic enclave In the past decade, Korean entertainment has gained global recognition, with Korean movies and TV shows winning Oscars and Emmys, and K-Pop groups becoming wildly popular. In Manhattan, Koreatown has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists, drawing them in with its bars, restaurants, and day spas. In Koreatown, NYC: The Consumption of a Transnational Brand (NYU Press, 2026), Jinwon Kim argues that Manhattan's Koreatown has become a new type of ethnic enclave, what she dubs a "transclave." This commercialized ethnic space exists solely for consumption, leisure, and entertainment, and has been shaped by South Korea's nation-branding strategy, new economic and cultural strategies, patterns in Korean migration, and shifts in tourism and urban policies in New York City. Kim posits that for many consumers in Koreatown, especially those who are not of Korean descent, the space has become a commercialized place where transnational culture meets the diverse racial and ethnic mosaic of New York City. Kim emphasizes how the space functions to "brand Korea" as a space to "consume ethnicity," reflecting the landscape of South Korea's consumer culture through the physical appearance of buildings and stores and the inclusion of franchise brands. Ultimately, Koreatown, NYC is a fascinating exploration of the intersection of authenticity, ethnicity, and identity in the heart of New York's midtown. Michael O. Johnston is Associate Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. His research explores symbolic interaction, leisure, meaning, place, community, and sociology of everyday life. He is the author of the forthcoming book Smalltown Urban: Performing the City in Rural America (Bloomsbury, January 2027), The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla, and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest. Smalltown Urban explores how small towns create moments of urbanity through festivals, public gatherings, and everyday social life. Since joining the New Books Network in 2017, he has interviewed more than 100 authors across sociology and the social sciences, helping connect scholars and their work with a broad public audience. It's only Lia in the studio tonight...and is it going to be debauchery, and fingers in mouths, and no "Amy Button" in sight? Ha! No! It's all melancholic reflections and enough confessionals to rival any 90's era album. While K-Dramas started as an escape, Lia shares how they quickly became a mirror, reflecting self (good and uncomfortable). From My Mister and the stillness it asked for before she was ready to give it, to Her Private Life and the ache of wanting to be met in joy, to why does she return to one specific drama for comfort — she reflects on love, homesickness, family, and the parts of herself she'd rather not admit she recognizes.Because that's the strange gift that can often happen with a good story: you think you are  watching them. Grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine) and settle in for a fun, heartfelt chat about how much we evolve over a decade, navigating changing friendships, and finding joyful new hobbies as we age. In This Episode, We Discuss: The 10-Year Evolution: Reflecting on how much our lives, priorities, and personalities change over a decade. The Midnight Library Perspective: A nod to Matt Haig's book and why looking back with grace beats getting stuck in the "Book of Regrets." Growing & Changing Together: How keeping long-term friendships and marriages strong requires flexibility as everyone evolves. Hobbies & New Passions: From BTS super-fans and golf lessons to gardening, bird watching, and gentle yoga classes. Inspiration for the Soul: A beautiful message by Brianna Weiss on letting your life be bigger and bolder than you ever imagined. Episode Highlights & Quotables "Studies show that you become a new person every 10 years... We did the best we could with our 10-year-ago self. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but we grow, our priorities change, and we keep moving forward." 10 Years Ago vs. Now: Moving from being uptight about dishes in the sink to adopting a practical "it'll be there tomorrow" mindset. Friendship Milestones: Celebrating best friends who jump into creative hobbies like 30-year-old hydrangeas or renting sprinters to see K-Pop concerts in their 50s! The Healing Power of Yoga: Why swapping physical therapy for a gentle 2–3 day a week yoga routine has been a game-changer. Featured Quote "I hope you allow your life to be bigger than you ever thought it could be. I hope you allow it to embody more beauty than you ever thought possible. I hope you don't get trapped by the small stories... Most of all, I hope you recognize the light when it hits you." — Brianna Weiss Resources & Links Mentioned Book Recommendation: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig Featured Recipe: Easy Baked Lemon Pesto Chicken (made with Trader Joe's seasonal Lemon Pesto over linguine!) We're Sarashi and DJ Panic, and we're bringing you five fresh picks that prove Asian pop can flip genres and moods without losing the hook. If you love discovering new music that's playlist-ready but still has something going on under the surface, this one's built for you.We start with izna's “METRONOME,” a house-driven, trance-leaning listen that eases in with dreamy synth and then drops a beat that basically takes control of your body. From there we jump to Number_i's “BUGS LIFE,” celebrating the group's growth, bolder production choices, and the way the lyrics can read like a metaphor for artists and fans being studied through social media. It's edgy, experimental, and confident about not being “pop.”Then we brighten the day with i-dle's “Morning,” a breezy, summery track that feels like a mini routine for your brain: wake up, breathe, and skip the online chaos. After that, we lean all the way into grown-up R&B with KIHYUN's “Stealin' Air” from his Borderline EP, plus PSYCHIC FEVER's “I Got Ways,” a smooth and seductive song with violin touches that hint at something darker and more controlling.Press play, build your playlist, and tell us what you think of these tracks.
