The 2022 Primary Elections have finally come to a close. This election year was predicted to be a Red Wave year for Republicans. But, in reality – it turned out to be a red deflated balloon. How did the Republican party start off so strong in the early campaigning days, only to end in massive defeat across the country? In today's episode, I discuss what I believe caused the Republican Party to so many elected seats this year during the primaries. I explain why we need to elect candidates from both parties instead of allowing one party to have majority control and discuss what happens when we see polarization within the political parties. I discuss how our poor messaging, messengers, and the Trump Derangement Syndrome impacted the Republican Party's ability to have more seats and what I believe we could have done differently to change the outcome. I also discuss why our country needs more serious people running for office and why the Republican Party needs to reconnect with our core principles. “We live in a land of democracy. We have two parties. In the two parties, we have polarization. In that polarization, we see what happened this year.” - Jennifer Nassour This week on Political Contessa: The epically disastrous Republican Party of Massachusetts Why we need to elect candidates from both parties in the primary elections The impact of polarization within the political parties How the Republican Party faired on a national level How the Republican Party's poor messaging, messengers, and the ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome' impacted the Primary Election Why we need more serious people running for office What I believe Republicans should do differently during the next Primary Election season Why Republicans need to reconnect to their core principles Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Political Contessa. Are Primary Elections Ruining Democracy?

The U.S. Constitution has a lot to say about elections. But nowhere is there any mention of political primaries, the process by which candidates are winnowed down ahead of a general election. Though they may seem integral to the U.S. system, primaries in fact are a relatively new phenomenon, borne of the turn of the 20th century when reformers sought to wrangle power from political party bosses. Of course, quite a lot has changed since the days of Tammany Hall. Gerrymandering has greatly reduced competitive districts, while the urban-rural divide has grown exponentially. Divisions run deep, with social media capable of dramatically shifting the political landscape at unprecedented speed. Many see primary elections as a principal culprit of what they consider an undermined democracy, fueling extremism, hindering compromise, and lending too much power to partisans. Others argue that primaries are an important bulwark against political corruption and a hedge against elitism. Election cycles may differ, especially for “municipal” or city elections.   As Christians, we also have the responsibility and opportunity to PRAY for our leaders - 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”   When the righteous rule, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. For years, political scholars and pundits have claimed that primary elections are exacerbating polarization and with the 2022 midterm elections approaching this year has been no different. With many extremist candidates on both sides of the aisle, it certainly feels like this claim should be true, but does the political science back that up? To find an answer we turn to Harvard political scientist James Snyder and his 2010 paper “Primary Elections and Partisan Polarization in the U.S. Congress”. The findings are surprising and may have some key insights for how we should think about primary elections in the U.S.

The 2022 Primary Election season is an interesting time, one that will eventually become a very interesting study for future campaigns and political science students. Across the very blue states of New England, including here in Massachusetts, we are winding down our Primary Election season with a majority of our political offices being Democratic-led. But, atleast we have a Republican in our corner office – our governor, Charlie Baker – who has made very sound fiscal policy decisions, putting our state on very solid footing. But despite Governor Baker's efforts, the Democratic party is pushing for a “Millionaire's Tax.” On the surface, a Millionaire's Tax sounds reasonable, but what many democratic leaders and constituents don't realize is – these taxes will eventually impact more than just the 1%. They will eventually impact the small business owners. In today's episode, I discuss the impact that a Millionaire's Tax will have on the American people. I discuss why it's important for our political landscape to be balanced between the blue and red parties when creating policies that will impact every American voter. I explain why elections – particularly, the Primary Elections – should be a competitive field where each candidate answers their constituent's questions and debate the issues that matter most to their constituents. I also explain what I believe is the key to achieving a functional government, why I believe our democracy is in trouble, and why voting in the Primary Elections is crucial to reclaim American democracy. “At the end of the day, in order to have a functioning government, you need people who are in the room and able to fight against the craziness on the other side.” - Jennifer Nassour This week on Political Contessa: The pros and cons of a Millionaire's Tax The key to achieving a functional government Why Primary Elections are crucial for American democracy Why elections should be competitive Why I believe American Democracy is in trouble Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Political Contessa. Voters in five states decided who will lead their parties in the 2024 general election. In Arizona, election denialism was regularly discussed by the state's GOP candidates for governor. In Michigan, we're learning more about Democratic spending meant to bolster right-of-center candidates. The idea is to prop up an easier target for Democratic candidates to take on in the purple state. Meanwhile, in Kansas voters weighed in on whether to uphold or dismantle the abortion rights that the state constitution protects. We talk about primary election results with reporters in Michigan, Arizona, and Kansas as part of 1A's "Remaking America" project. This conversation is part of our Remaking America collaboration with six public radio stations around the country. Remaking America is funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast. Have questions?
