2762 - Where The Real Fight Against Authoritarianism Is w/ David Pepper

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 26, 2022 61:00

Sam and Emma host David Pepper, former chair of the Ohio Democratic Party, to discuss his recent book Laboratories of Autocracy: A Wake-Up Call From Behind the Lines, on how the GOP has been chiseling away at democracy from its base, with the Karl Roves and Thomas Hofellers reinventing the gerrymandering wheel in 2010. Pepper begins by looking at the snapshot of Ohio statehouse and presidential elections between 2008 and 2012, where Obama won with near-identical numbers yet saw a statehouse flip from a 10-8 Democrat majority to a 12-4 Republican supermajority, with 99% of successfully gerrymandered districts in 2011 holding throughout the rest of the decade, to the point that in  the then 2018 “Blue Wave,” MI, WI, and PA all saw a majority of votes for democratic statehouse members, yet retained either Republican majorities or supermajorities. They then dive into how this has completely flipped the game of local politics to one of extremism and keeping private entities happy, grounding success in anti-democratic principles, alongside making sense of Democratic counter-gerrymandering attempts with a complete absence of investment in state politics, while groups like ALEC, the NRA, and the Koch brothers have poured money into making statehouses into testing grounds for their policy and its support, before they push it onto the federal level. David, Sam, and Emma wrap up by looking at what Democrats, both at the municipal and federal levels, can do to reinvigorate the democratic drive in the US populace. Emma and Sam also touch on the news of Stephen Breyer's retirement and do a little compare and contrast with Fox's COVID coverage alongside Fox's COVID coverage. And in the Fun Half: Jackson Hinkle, of “The Dive,” joins to discuss why he, American Patriot and Marxist-Leninist, thinks the Squad should simply leverage their votes to capitalize on their negotiations with Biden to PASS a progressive agenda swiftly through the Senate, rather than leveraging their votes to capitalize on their negotiations with Biden to NOT pass a progressive agenda. Additionally, there was some interesting conversation on what critiques of the Squad are and are not legitimate or useful, but that was few and far between. Plus, your IM's! 2762 - Will The Standoff With Russia Over Ukraine Turn Hot? And Is There Anything To Heat Up In The Senate?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2022 80:30

Sam and Emma break down all the big news from the past few days, from the rapidly developing situation in Ukraine, to COVID, labor, the courts, and more! Sam and Emma begin by diving into the “mother of all sanctions” bill being drafted by Sen. Menendez, from the semi-useful elements of to the GOP using them to wiggle in their Russian policy, and how to grapple with being anti-war and pro-Taiwan and Ukraine (it's not that hard). Next, they look into the judicial rejection of Alabama's redistricting, giving them two weeks to make room for a second majority Black district (despite representing over a quarter of constituents), and how cool it would be if there were a federal blueprint for what problematic gerrymandering looks like, with maybe four voting-rights-related sections before it. They wrap up the free-half with an extended discussion on the state of Omicron and the right-wing US media reaction, including Bari Weiss and Bill Maher whining about their incredible sacrifices - from washing food to watching Netflix - and the weirdness of their constant pro-Israel talking points suddenly disappearing as Israel employs the utmost policy requirements for a certain segment of their population. Ben Shapiro and Dore expand on this by reminding us that the real research was the COVID-positive friends we met (and the videos we reacted to) along the way, and Sam and Emma dive into the horrors of long-COVID in the countries with the best healthcare infrastructure. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Nomiki Konst, as they debate who's more lost, Donald Trump trying to talk history, or Don Jr. trying to talk… at all. They also cover the Right's new propaganda series, made to make sure white kids never feel like their ancestors made mistakes, the differences between the non-delegation and Chevron doctrines, and Sarah Palin gets some Wattered down questioning about her COVID status as she traipses around NYC. Tucker and Sen Ron Johnson discuss those fools having conversations about COVID from their ivory towers (Note: Fox News' building is NOT ivory), plus, your calls and IMs! 2761 - The Real Criminals Who Criminalize Poverty w/ Tony Messenger

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2022 62:06

Sam and Emma host Tony Messenger, Metro columnist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, to discuss his recent book Profit and Punishment: How America Criminalizes The Poor In The Name Of Justice, on how municipalities across the US have instituted a system of debtors' jail, trapping poor folks into a system of punishment and payment with no way out, solely as a way to help fund their local “justice” infrastructure. Messenger first dives into what he learned after the 2014 protests in Ferguson, and the growing realization of the pervasive nature of courts using fees and fines to lock poor people into a cycle of debt and incarceration, to the point that, throughout the US, it became viewed as simply how criminal justice worked, fundraising from powerless communities rather than wealthy ones. Tony then walks Sam and Emma through the stories of three women across the US – one of Kendalia Killman in Oklahoma, one of Brooke Bergen in Salem, Missouri, and lastly that of Sasha Darby in Colombia, South Carolina – diving into how courts, the legislature, and private debtors manipulate a pervasive presence of invisible fees and fines for going to jail and being arrested to capitalize on the lack of power, free time, money, and legal knowledge of everyday Americans, resulting in years of abuse and extortion, and devastating effects to the health and well-being of them and their families. After touching on the unanimous rejection of these “debtors' jails” at the level of State Supreme Courts, Messenger explores the roles of local legislatures and Courts in breaking the pipeline from poverty to prison, and having to parse through and deconstruct the myriad legal fees and clauses created to entrap the populace into it. Sam and Emma also touch on the building tensions on the Ukraine border with Russia, and the progression of this conflict behind George W. Bush's promise to Ukraine almost two decades ago. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma take on the legitimacy of discussions around the Overton Window, before unpacking the illegitimacy of the overtime window in the NFL, Lee from southern IL lays some well-deserved compliments on the staff, and Chuck Todd and Elissa Slotkin take on the disgusting and childish nature of pointing out that representatives aren't doing their jobs. Tucker promotes whatever the candy-version of furrydom is, VA school districts attempt to claw some power back, and a parent threatens revolt, David from KC dives into misdemeanor class persecution, and Emily from Wisconsin calls in to chat about the horrors of Social Security disability insurance, and the trappings of government-enforced poverty, plus, your calls and IMs! 2760 -The Russia-Ukraine Conflict Comes To A Boil As President Manchin Holds The Key To "BBB" w/ Stephen Wertheim, Rep. Ilhan Omar, & David Feldman

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 21, 2022 107:48

It is a jam-packed Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Stephen Wertheim, Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment and Visiting Faculty at Yale Law School, to discuss the recent developments with Russia and Ukraine. Stephen  comes in to situate where the building Russia-Ukraine conflict is at, and what role the US has played in the increasing pressure. First, they look at negotiations between Tony Blinken and Russia's Foreign Minister Lavrov, and contextualize them within Biden's statements that the use of force was not on the table, before discussing the role of NATO expansions, especially towards Ukraine and Georgia, in inflaming the rising tensions, and touching on the discourse on how not going into war could (but shouldn't) reflect our weakness or strength towards China. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota's 5th Congressional District to discuss everything that's happening on Capitol Hill. Rep. Omar starts off by taking on the future of a Build Back Better breakup and the fool's errand of trying to pass anything without changing the filibuster, how to negotiate writing bills between the House and Senate, and why nobody, especially six specific members of the progressive caucus, could've seen the passing of BIF as working against BBB. They also touch on a potential upcoming leadership fight for Democrats, and Sam and Emma explore the absurdity of corporate dems' pitch for moderation. Lastly,  The David Feldman, of The David Feldman Show, joins for a “David Feldman” fun half, as he eulogizes Meat Loaf and the incredible influence he had in the sexual maturation of one David Feldman, and David Feldman covers the complete distortion of MLK's legacy by trusting the FBI's claims that he cared about “labor organizing” and “voting rights.” Hannity triggers Trump with the “W” word, Laura Ingraham laughs off vaccinated folks having lesser COVID effects, and Jen Psaki reminds us that now is the time for activists to step up and do the Biden Administration's work, while they shift their focus to… to… um... plus, your IMs! 2759 - The Fraud Of "White Feminism" w/ Kyla Schuller

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2022 68:54

Emma hosts Kyla Schuller, Assistant Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University, to discuss her recent book The Trouble With White Women: A Counterhistory of Feminism, on how mainstream feminism has been a project of theft disguised as liberation. Professor Schuller and Emma situate white feminism as one that isolates a specific element of misogyny while leaning into many forms of structural oppression, from racism to classism to transphobia. The first contrast Kyla Schuller brings to our attention is that between the feminism of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, co-author of the quintessential “History of Women's Suffrage,” with Susan B. Anthony, and that of Frances E.W. Harper, who used the income from her poetry to fund the Underground Railroad and paint women's rights as a movement to promote Black folks' land rights, liberty, and literacy. Despite writing what is viewed as the quintessential “first wave” feminist text, Stanton's and Anthony's feminism was actively based on beliefs that Black suffrage could not take precedence over women, leaving Harper's beliefs entirely out of their project, while appropriating and editing the works of Black women such as Sojourner Truth to fit their own narratives. Using this as a blueprint for the differences between “white” and intersectional feminisms, Schuller then looks to the appropriation of the story of escaped slave Harriet Jacobs by Harriet Beecher Stowe for her work “Uncle Tom's Cabin,” and how this reflected Stowe's feelings of the white woman's role in protecting, teaching, and civilizing women of color, as further represented by her ultimate acquisition of the largest orange plantation in Florida, as a place to experiment with disciplining and civilizing the formerly enslaved. She and Emma also touch on the stories of Margaret Sanger and Dorothy Ferebee as an important contrast in the development of reproductive choice, versus reproductive justice, before touching on the takedown of Sandy Stone from the lesbian music collective “Olivia Records” by anti-Trans activist Janice Raymond. They wrap up the interview by touching on the concept that the universal female experience that TERFs ground their oppression in simply doesn't exist, and look at Sheryl Sandberg's “lean in” feminism versus AOC's coalition feminism. Emma also looks at Biden's decision to break up BBB, hoping to at least get some moderates on board if he's going to lose the faith of the rest of his base. And in the Fun Half: Brandon and Matt join Emma as they take on MLK NFTs but like IRL, exploring the commodification of the Civil Rights Movement, and crypto bros' inability to grapple with artists having the rights over their work. Warren from Toronto calls in to explore Jordan Peterson's brief prevalence in Canadian academia, and how that all fell apart well before his retirement, Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson take on the threat of “NGOs,” (totally different than corporations, they swear), and the crew explores how Jordan Peterson's self-help work targeted people who were looking for meaning in their life, and what the left can learn from it. 2758 - When Men Accidentally Become Gods w/ Anna Della Subin

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2022 54:38

Sam and Emma Anna Della Subin, senior editor at Bidoun Projects, to discuss her recent book Accidental Gods: On Men Unwittingly Turned Divine, on the pervasive and frequently overlooked figure that began popping up at the dawn of “New World” imperialism, and has since emerged, both through oppression and resistance, countless times in the face of a singular authority. Subin begins by bringing Sam and Emma back to the end of the 1400s, looking at the “explorers” from Columbus to Cortez that saw their reception by indigenous folks as an expression of deification and mysticism, rather than an intense recognition of their sudden appearance and authoritarian claim to power. These stories were then told and retold by European settlers, bolstering the religious imperialism that defined their ideology, justifying their claim to the lands of entire civilizations, and explaining away the terror they wrought as, at worst, Godly fear that must occur to bring them the light of Christianity and the West. Next, Anna explores how these myths were central to the creation and recognition of race as a social signifier, as Spanish colonizers brought their blood puritanism to the Americas with the primary identifier shifting from religion to skin color as they converted the region. Moving forward in history, Anna, Sam, and Emma then dive into the roles of Accidental Gods that emerged under colonization, but without the imperial goals, such as Haile Selassie and Gandhi, as the imposition of their deification came from around them, bolstering the people's belief in their resistance and emancipation, before they look at more contemporary examples of the vitriolic accidental gods that emerged, from Major John Nicholson to General MacArthur, as people they stood above attempted to reclaim the power exercised upon them. Lastly, they touch on the accidental deification that we see today, from Donald Trump to Capitalism as a whole, and the “cargo cult” of the British and American doctrine. Sam and Emma also touch on the disgusting politicization of MLK and Voting Rights, two things that never EVER had to do with politics. And in the Fun Half: Josh calls in to chat about Bernie doing all of the heavy lifting when it comes to disseminating COVID information, Bob from FL totally debunks mistrust of the CIA, and Sam and Emma are blown away by Gary Chambers's senatorial campaign announcement. Dan Crenshaw cracks under the pressure of a pre-teen using his own words against him, and Emma and Sam take on Ron DeSantis codifying protections for white fragility into Floridian education policy. They also explore Orange County's health director being placed on administrative leave for questioning his department's public health practices, and OAN possibly going under after losing their corporate funding from AT&T, plus, your calls and IMs! 2757 - The New "Southern Strategy" w/ Angie Maxwell

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2022 84:00

Sam and Emma host Angie Maxwell, associate professor of political science at the University of Arkansas, to discuss her recent book The Long Southern Strategy: How Chasing White Voters in the South Changed American Politics, on how the Southern Strategy that completely restructured the electoral college behind the GOP's turn against social progress has found long-term success in bolstering support for the Right on terms of racial resentment, modern sexism, and Christian nationalism. Professor Maxwell begins by situating the party politics after the 40s, with the Supreme Court standing behind Jim Crow laws, and the National Democratic Party being forced into a choice to either stick behind their southern force, or the unions and coalitions that drove their base after the New Deal, ultimately seeing the southern white democratic contingent secede into the Dixiecrats, leaving room for this conservative coalition in the south. Next, she works to unpack the differences between a long- and short-term view of the Southern Strategy, with the former moving beyond the years of Nixon and playing an essential role even in the Democratic victories of Carter and Clinton, before she works to outline the clear roles of racial resentment, with the Civil Rights Movement, and sexism, with the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and abortion fights, played in the GOP's Southern takeover, before shifting to the role of religion. She, Sam, and Emma dive into the complete absence of Democratic infrastructure in the South throughout the mid-to-late 20th Century – particularly when it came to unions, who made up much of their support – thus making Churches the biggest institutions of community infrastructure, in the midst of a massive ideological shift in Southern Baptist ministers to the right. Next, they turn to the role of Southern white women in bolstering the South electorally, as their religious infrastructure shifted towards fundamentalism, as they took on mass organizing to kill the ERA in their states, looking at feminism as a threat to motherhood, family, and Christianity. After touching on the role that religion played in the early aughts US imperialism and interventionism, Professor Maxwell moves to the contemporary role the strategy has played, looking at how the South, both for the GOP and Democrats, is central to setting the tone for primaries, and how Democratic messaging has to change in the south to begin to unpack and restructure voters' perspectives and beliefs on progressive policy goals. Sam and Emma also touch on how the month since the filibuster changed has obviously cemented the tool in the Senate, never to change again. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Nomiki Konst as they cover the GOP and Democratic analysts coming to the bipartisan consensus that their bases are what's wrong, and walk through some of the worst and even worse invocations of MLK from yesterday, including Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin's CRT bill, Crowder's dishonest honesty, and Eric Adams painting a picture of MLK as the baller hick from… Atlanta. Nomiki talks about Crypto bros and their ongoing attempt to recolonize Puerto Rico, Stinchfield admires the hysterical women that want national unity, and Jimmy Dore reminds us of the dangers of the white moderates that got in the way of Force the Vote, like AOC. 2755 - SCOTUS Blocks Vaccine Mandate As Government Essentially Ceases To Govern w/ Heather Digby Parton & Francesca Fiorentini

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Francesca Fiorentini, host of The Bitchuation Room podcast! First, Digby, Emma, and Sam get into yesterday's SCOTUS decisions, the first blocking the testing mandate with a vaccine opt-out in businesses over 100 people, and the second approving the healthcare worker mandate, explaining the stupidity of the first decision, which hinged on the view that OSHA could only protect against threats unique to the workplace, and the obviousness of the second. Parsing deeper into the first decision, Sam gets into an administrative-state-state of mind, as they explore the potential impact the decision could have on the Chevron Doctrine, and look at it as a climax of the GOP agenda of the last couple of decades, which amidst countless culture war talking points has held one policy ideology at their core, the dismantling of the capacity of the government to do practically anything. Next, they check in on Jan 6 prosecutions, diving into the half-century-long GOP project of sowing doubt in democracy and priming voters to think that election fraud was a genuine issue, helping bolster their argument that there are debatable questions on the validity of this moment, before concluding with the abject failure of the Biden administration on practically every front, with almost a year gone by without any substantive legislation for COVID, infrastructure, or voting rights. Emma and Sam also expand on the power this Supreme Court could end up having, and the pointlessness of a discussion on SCOTUS abolition when we can't even get filibuster abolition. Then in the second half, Francesca joins Sam and Emma as, beyond shedding some lightheartedness on the show, they tackle the upcoming the Bitchuation Room live show (featuring one Sam Seder), and ponder the efficacy of poop surveillance in getting accurate COVID numbers, before moving onto Joe Rogan's falling right into a trap of “correct and concise COVID data,” and One America News turning to Jesus Christ's love of prostitutes to parallel Donald Trump's love of prostitutes, despite their subtle yet key differences. They also touch on the absurdity of petty-crime fear-mongering, and a Jan 6th attendee takes on his Fox News idols for calling him a Fed, plus, your IMs! 2754 - The Case Against Compromise w/ Rachel Greenwald-Smith

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2022 65:27

Emma hosts Rachel Greenwald Smith, professor of English at St. Louis University, to discuss her recent book On Compromise: Art, Politics, and the Fate of An American Ideal, on compromise in art and politics, and as an American ideal. Professor Greenwald-Smith and Emma first back up and look at how the US values compromise as a whole, looking at Biden's role in 2020 as the “compromise candidate,” and how his failures have sort of proved the validity of this title, before the Professor takes on the difference between viewing compromise as an end which, itself, is politically valuable, and viewing it as a means, which is more reflective of everyday life, and sees compromise as resulting in some feelings of loss and resentment. This brings her and Emma to the role of compromise in capitalism and liberalism, as a value that turns us around to implicitly accept some amount of suffering and exploitation, turning to the Clinton Administrations' acceptance of neoliberalism as the beginning of our current era of leftist compromise, effectively giving up on socialist valences for almost two decades. Next, Professor Greenwald-Smith shifts to a discussion of the aesthetics of compromise, in politics, as we see with the constant attitude policing of the left, and in art, from early 20th Century avant-garde publishers to 90s and early 21st Century punk artists and look at the lessons we can learn from the punk movement, particularly around accessibility and structure. They wrap up the interview by looking at the role of compromise in reinforcing America's anti-blackness throughout history, from the 3/5ths to the Missouri Compromise, to various reconstruction policies, and touch on how the narrative of compromise as the midpoint between pain and progress gets stretched further and further, as we've seen it begin to break with mass labor resignations under COVID. Emma also touches on Donald Trump turning on his MiniMe, Ron De(Santis), and Kyrsten Sinema proudly displaying another trophy claimed from the Biden Agenda. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as they take on the failure of Democrats to not just support, but cultivate democracy, Mark from Mass asks for clarification on liberals' insistence on uplifting incorrect voices, and the Chi Bureaucrat and Dr. Gus give insights into the goings on of US public schools in Chicago and Florida, respectively. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist at AccessHealth Louisiana and host of the Noise Filter podcast, to discuss the recent developments with COVID and the Omicron variant. Jamie walks Sam and Emma through how Juul swept across US high schools after its release in 2015, peaking at around 30% of high schoolers in 2019, before a string of misinformation on black market-THC cartridges lead to an array of anti-vape messages being disseminated across both high schools and DC, pushing Trump's FDA to begin taking on e-cigarettes. They also discuss the validity of considering e-cigs as a cigarette alternative, before looking behind the scenes at Juul's marketing to young people, and how truly negligent they could be. Next, Dr. MarkAlain Dery makes his Omicron return as he covers his experiences as the variant's impact on hospitals begins to reach its peak, why, despite its lower virulence compared to Delta, Omicron is still about as deadly as the wild type, and what differentiates the variants when it comes to long COVID. He, Sam, and Emma also discuss Omicron's impact on children, what sort of variant development we might see post-Omicron, and look deeper into efficacy numbers around testing, quarantine, and masks. Sam and Emma round out the free half with Biden's transfer to voting rights and the filibuster, and Mitt Romney's claim that they are really voting wrongs. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive into Fauci's political symbolism, looking at him go head to head with Rand Paul, and debate how much his presence lights a fire under the right, before discussing the growing prevalence of fake testing centers and faked tests. They also discuss the Right's need to center fascism as a defense against socialism, Laura Loomer's devastating censorship from ride-share apps, and Jimmy Dore returns with some overly-filtered misinformation on COVID, despite firing his editor who was obviously at fault last time, plus, your IMs! They also cover the uselessness of Biden's pivot on the filibuster if he doesn't also pivot on his treatment of Manchin, and dive into Eric Adams proving his worth as the newest corrupt Mayor of NYC, shifting the blame from ally Rick Gropper after he ignored a multitude of complaints and violations in the lead-up to his building catching fire in the Bronx, killing 17. 2751 - Abolishing the American Caste System w/ Sheryll Cashin

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 10, 2022 60:23

Sam and Emma host Sheryll Cashin, professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, to discuss her recent book White Space, Black Hood: Opportunity Hoarding and Segregation in the Age of Inequality, on how the residential caste system built up around race and geography has ingrained itself into US cities, becoming central to how we imagine our neighborhoods and cities operating. They begin by focusing on the geographical element, as Professor Cashin looks to Baltimore to explore how the migration of escaped and freed slaves to the North saw cities resort to a contain and segregate tactic, tightly grouping Black folks into neighborhoods separated by infrastructure and investment, both in what is built, via the construction of highway boundaries, and in what isn't, with a complete desertion of public infrastructure. Looking into the 21st Century, Cashin explores how even under Black mayors and majority-Black city councils cities like Baltimore saw the residential caste system expanded and reinforced, discussing the role of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan in putting a stop to the aptly named “red line” to connect poorer neighborhoods to downtown and the suburbs, and re-investing the money entirely into rich white areas. After discussing this element of boundary maintenance, Professor Cashin, Sam, and Emma look to how this segregation also promotes opportunity hoarding, by not only keeping wealth and infrastructure down in Black neighborhoods, regardless of economic makeup, but also by forcing them to subsidize opportunity in wealthier neighborhoods. Lastly, they touch on the role of stereotype-driven policing and surveillance and how this works to reinforce both of the previous two elements, before they wrap up by discussing Sheryll Cashin's ideas on abolition and repair, working to reverse the destructive policies that have defined our metropolitan development over the last century and a half. Sam and Emma also touch on Ron DeSantis's tactical “if I can't see it, it doesn't exist” strategy with invisible viruses. And in the Fun Half: Sam finally gets some video proof that not all Pats fans absolutely suck, Emma compliments Sam's “soy-boy professor” look, and the crew discusses the HIPAA violation that is a Tinder date asking DeSantis his STD status. John from SA, Kowalski from NE, and Ronald Raygun hit us with back to back to back regulars as they tackle Wisconsin gerrymandering, defeatism, and ideal FBI-Plant Dave Ramsey, respectively. 2750 - Will The Country Just Accept Minority Rule Forever? w/ Osita Nwanevu & Judy Gold

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 7, 2022 94:54

It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at The New Republic, to wrap up the week in news and discuss his recent piece in the New York Times, "Trump Isn't the Only One To Blame for the Capitol Riot." Osita sits down to unpack the project of Republican grievance that has been built over the last few decades, boiling over into violence last 1/6. Osita explores how conservatives have been forced to grapple with seeing themselves as a political majority while they see the culture slip away from their values. First, he and Sam contextualize this within the last few decades, exploring how Senate Republicans have last represented a majority of voters in the 90s, despite holding a majority of seats about half of the time, and how this, along with a similar situation with the presidency, has allowed analysis to take over the right that ignores the structure of our political system, allowing them to interpret the electorate as conservative. They then dive into the narrative set up by this ideology, seeing any success of a progressive agenda on the electoral or cultural fronts as a result of Democratic conspiracy to undermine the conservative majority, and look at how Democratic institutionalists have internalized the fight for white moderate support as a necessity in politics, thus only working to reinforce this idea that they must constantly be catered to. They wrap up the interview by exploring how leftist organizing can work to do what the DNC won't, building infrastructure on the ground to create a base that fights for its majority representation without conceding to a moderate conservatism that is antithetical to its platform. Sam also touches on some upcoming court cases taking on testing mandates, vaccine mandates, and Congress's capacity for delegation. Then, Sam is joined by comedian Judy Gold, host of the Kill Me Now podcast, as she makes her 2022 MR debut! Judy and Sam take on the 1/6 anniversary, the conservative fear of actually saying “fuck you” to a president, and the state of having children in Omicron. And in the Fun Half, Sam touches on the oral arguments for the SCOTUS case on vaccine mandates, Teacher Lauren discusses the failure of localities to stand behind their teachers and students, and Dennis Prager reminds us that 1/6 insurrectionists were unarmed, metaphorically. Elon Musk's single lane, Tesla-only tunnel in Las Vegas turns out to not help congestion, Peter McIndoe preaches about the self-care of letting yourself breathe drone-free air, and Adam from OH-6 discusses a potential plan to run for Congress, plus, your calls and IMs! 2749 - Why The Democrats Still Don't Understand "Party Politics" w/ Adam Hilton

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2022 81:57

Sam hosts Adam Hilton, assistant professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College, to discuss his recent book True Blues: The Contentious Transformation of the Democratic Party, on how the party apparatus of the Democratic Party went from a three-majority monster in the midst of the 20th Century to a hollow shell of an organization. Professor Hilton begins by walking through where political parties came from, looking at them as creatures of political officials seeking to form a structure of internal coalition, while in contentious interaction with the social groups that make up their base, before they help contextualize where the Democratic Party was coming out of the New Deal. Adam and Sam walk through the coalition of Southern conservatives, big city Democratic machines, and Northern liberals that took hold of US politics for three decades after FDR's Presidency, exploring the Confederate-like arrangement that allowed states and localities autonomy over their agendas, and why this both bolstered the unity over those decades, while also ultimately undermining the Democratic association with growing movements for civil rights, with continued coalition with a segregationist south. Next, they dive into the four years from 1968-1972 that saw a complete deconstruction of the Democratic apparatus, starting with the '68 conventions election of Hubert Humphrey – against the public's engagement –  and shifting towards a New Politics ideology of good government reformation amidst a rejection of racial populism. Professor Hilton then dives into how organizations like the Coalition for a Democratic Majority put themself at the center of the party in the wake of George McGovern and New Politic's overwhelming loss to Nixon in '72, effectively working to completely deconstruct the party reformation, leaving behind solely a shell of an organization, largely relying on outside groups for their electoral efforts. Hilton and Sam also explore the major differences between the Democratic and Republican parties at this time, before diving into how we can see the DNC or other organizations work to rebuild the party's structure. Sam also gives some updates on Omicron and Education. And in the Fun Half: Sam reunites with Matt and Brandon as they take on Nate Silver's descent into a whole new realm of fear-mongering, Hannity and Meadows reflect on the true meaning of January 6th, and the crew reflects on their Omicron run-ins. Ron DeSantis debates the politicization of coup d'etats, and Brandon and Matt reflect on the legacy of the 1/6 narratives. Lin Manuel Miranda inspires a conversation on the relationship between talent and corniness, and Nathan from Chicago chats about WWE's exploitative practices. They also chat about the Democrats' desire to respect existential threats, plus, your calls and IMs! 2748 - The Fight To Defeat Privatization w/ Donald Cohen

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 5, 2022 58:40

Sam hosts Donald Cohen, founder and executive director of In the Public Interest, to discuss his recent book The Privatization of Everything: How the Plunder of Public Goods Transformed America and How We Can Fight Back that he co-wrote with Allen Mikaelian, on how neoliberal policies have cut up the public sphere, dividing its profits between a narrow subset of people, while turning the rest of us into competing consumers rather than communal citizens. Cohen and Sam begin by walking through how private companies take over public goods, first looking at the cautionary tale of Chicago Parking Meters LLC, originally a public good before being frantically sold for just over a billion dollars to offset the red in the city's budget, only to see the cost of parking in Chicago skyrocket as the city realized it had undersold for fractions of the potential profits. However, solely focusing on parking drastically undersells the issue, as they explore how, beyond distributing wealth to further stratification, the privatization of public goods often ends up putting necessities in the hands of corporations, including access to clean water, education (both schools and libraries), and, of course, healthcare, resulting in the most central elements of our society turning towards the market over the community. Donald Cohen dives into this privatization of community, working through the disastrous effects of charter schools and private schools on our education system, before taking a step back in scale to discuss how socialized medicine gave us all of the benefits of the vaccines, while the privatized profits have contributed to all of the horrors of the variants, and what the privatization of the judicial system has looked like. They wrap up the interview by touching on how we can push back against rampant privatization, focusing on pressuring our local and federal governments on legislative and policy issues, and reminding the public of the surface of the state that protects us in everyday life. And in the Fun Half: Eric Adams moves his claim over the NYPD to be one over every worker in New York City, Coby from Utah calls in to discuss the healthcare provider shortage, and Robert from Tampa follows that up with a discussion on municipal ownership of utilities. El Camino Chavez finally gets his chance to debate Sam, only to blow it out his mask, Dana Perino reminds us that if we want to conquer the elements, we need tanks, or, ya know, farming equipment. Manchin is done with shutting things down, the MR Crew admires Ted Cruz's and Senator Hawley's foresight on last January 5th, and Tyler from Indianapolis explores white supremacy and the military, plus, your calls and IMs! 2747 - January 6th And The “Modern Jihad” w/ Suzanne Schneider

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2022 69:52

Sam hosts Suzanne Schneider, Deputy Director and Core Faculty at the Brooklyn Institute, to discuss her recent book The Apocalypse and the End of History: Modern Jihad and the Crisis of Liberalism, on the evolution of jihad as liberalism took over the world. Schneider begins by helping frame the central terms, exploring the greater project of liberalism, attempting to advance democracy, the free market, and individual liberty over the last three centuries, and how that transitioned into neoliberalism, with the takeover of the state and products of democracy by capital, before they look at jihad as a form of Islamic warfare. Suzanne then dives into how the right to engage in jihad has evolved, from the right of a state or caliphate, as seen as recently as the Ottoman Empire's entrance into World War I, to a form of insurrection, largely in rejection of the people's faith in the state, over the last century, only recently changing with ISIS' s populist and elite-driven claim to a new caliphate. She and Sam dive into this development, looking at how ISIS was able to use an ideology of self-selecting to drive feelings of individual agency, and the capacity to have an actual impact, amidst democracy's failure to deliver the same ability, and look at the similar qualities in the far-right movements in the US, giving rise to authoritarianism dressed up in religious aesthetics that thrives on disenchantment and lack of civil agency. This brings them to a discussion of neoliberalism and the process of state capture and privatization of capital, looking at how complete fealty to the market has seen the state let democracy, and civil agency slip by the wayside. Sam and Suzanne wrap up the interview by looking at colonialism, rather than domestic capitalism in the empires, as the sowing ground for today's expression of liberalism, where the state exists for the capture of capital for private benefit and to violently suppress resentment, exploiting people and keeping them tamed through the monopoly on violence. Sam also dives into Schumer's recent turnaround on the filibuster, and deciphering what he really is willing to give up to Manchin. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst joins us as she and Sam explore a wild set of New York News updates, from Eric Adams claiming the NYPD as his personal police, to the New York bipartisan redistricting committee practically giving up on Long Island Democrats, before they explore Sam getting Queer Eyed, Glenn and Tucker trying to balance libertarian bullshitting with authoritarian dog-whistling, and Candace Owens and Alex Jones turning their back on Trump. Happy 2022! Sam is back from a well-deserved break as he and Matt catch up on the big developments in the news that happened over Christmas and the New Year. They walk through the overwhelming spread of Omicron across New York, address Sam's new silver fox look, and cover Steve Cortes talking AOC and feet, somehow in a completely new, and yet entirely unsurprising fashion. Brian Kilmeade and Jesse Watters rant on how COVID testing is locking us in a box, and needs to be drastically decreased, and Hillary from Seattle calls in to discuss the developing HPV vaccine and the successful tests around it. Kowalski from Nebraska gives Sam some flack for moving the Big Live show right to the middle of planting season, Letterhack from CO calls in about the Boulder wildfires, before Sam and Matt celebrate Majority Report cracking the top 10 of Rudy Giuliani's and Bernie Kerik's list of conservative influencers. They also discuss this year's midterms, tallying up preliminary numbers and what Democrats can do to not lose both the House and Senate. The MR team also reflects on Jimmy Dore and Max Blumenthal's earth-shattering information that small-scale YouTuber “Shaun” is the keystone of the CIA COVID coverage infiltration, before exploring a report that Koch money was, unrelatedly, very central to getting us back to work in a Pandemic. Griffin from Florida calls in to discuss rhetoric and policy around gun rights, John from San Antonio asks for Sam's defining story of 2021, and why it's Joe Biden's failure to manage the Senate, and Carl from Minneapolis discusses the absurdity of forcing the immunocompromised back to work in a pandemic. Best Of 2021: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy & Behind the 'Blue Wall of Silence' with the D.C. Police w/ Adam Jentleson, Rosa Brooks, & David Feldman

In the jam-packed FINAL day of the Best Of 2021: Sam hosts Adam Jentleson, former advisor to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to discuss his new book Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy on how the filibuster negatively impacts American democracy. How John C. Calhoun and other Southern Senators pioneered the filibuster to block civil rights legislation during Reconstruction. How it persisted through the Jim Crow era and became normalized. Reforms that could change the majority required to pass legislation in the Senate back to 50%. Then, Sam and Emma host Rosa Brooks, law professor at Georgetown University, to discuss her recent book Tangled Up In Blue: Policing in the American City, and her experiences as a part-time volunteer reserve police officer in Washington, D.C. Professor Brooks discusses how she came to the topic; following her work on “How Everything Became War and The Military Became Everything,” she picks up on the trail of the normalized violence of American policing and looks into the behind-the-scenes elements of how officers grapple with and make sense of their role. Beginning with the academy, Brooks walks through how the culture of policing emphasizes danger, defense, and discipline – exploring how police overstate the threat to their livelihood in the line of duty, encouraging the use of force whenever deemed necessary. Next, she, Sam, and Emma talk about the changes in the academy over the last half-decade, both as reforms slowly trickle in and younger generations begin to take hold of departments, how we can assess the success of reforms and consent decrees during a period in which crime has continued to drop (wow maybe crime CAN be a product of policing), and why even police acting within legal and constitutional guidelines engage in incredibly harmful behavior. They round out the interview with a conversation on why Rosa feels reform must be embraced, and why the conversation on policing should be focused on imagining new systems of safety, rather than on budgetary punishments of police departments. Lastly, Sam and Emma are joined by David Feldman of The David Feldman Show as they discuss his small-government, Ayn Randian approach to Marxism, the neediness of progressives in negotiations, and the intoxicating misogyny of Jimmy Dore. Plus, David gives a spiel on Bernie Sanders' overwhelming kielbasa. Representative Omar, Sam, and Emma take on a variety of issues central to the progressive cause as the Biden administration has begun to falter. They begin with key issues on immigration and refugees, as Ilhan Omar touches on the shameful continuation of Trump policies under Biden, particularly exploring the treatments of Afghan and Haitian refugees and the Biden administration's reliance on Title 42, taking on also why he has failed to stick to this campaign promise. Next, they move to the topic of student debt relief, as Congresswoman Omar dives into the mysterious missing memo that stands as the only thing preventing Biden from putting pen to paper with an executive order, and what could be behind the delay, before they jump to the topic of the reconciliation platform and how debt relief may or may not fit in. She, Emma, and Sam also dive into the discussion around reconciliation spending, why a shorter span on funding is easily okay by progressives if Sinema and Manchin will just clarify what they would like, and explore the developing role of the progressive caucus. Then Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Ben Gleib to discuss his recent dust up with Charlie Kirk! In today's Best of 2021: Sam and Emma host Pascal Robert of the This is Revolution podcast to discuss the Moïse assassination in Haiti as a product of neoliberalism and colonialism, before they touch on the US's foreign policy role in the Caribbean, and what Eric Adams's Democratic primary victory means for progressive democrats moving forward. Emma, Sam, and Pascal start with the context for the Western occupation of Haiti, starting with the Haitian Revolution that forced the French, Spanish, and British armies off of the Island after centuries of brutal enslavement and abuse under settler-colonialism, with attempts by the French to reclaim the country continuing into the 19th Century. Next, Robert walks us through the U.S.' role as one of the biggest beneficiaries of Haitian independence, with the Louisiana Purchase stemming as a direct result, and how we took advantage of the continued inequality and lack of colonial power with an occupation of Haiti from 1915-34, extracting what resources we could, and a return to colonial practices under neoliberalism, with U.S. backed Dictators as the only leaders with any prolonged stay in office since the Regan administration. They wrap up the interview by looking into how the assassination of Moïse came to be, stemming from conflict with a largely non-Haitian Oligarchical class that the U.S. likely could not stand by any longer, and Pascal Roberts discusses the importance of the Black and Creole middle classes in how the country moves forwards. Best Of 2021: The Legacies of Slavery Hidden in Plain Sight & America's Long Journey to Recognizing Juneteenth w/ Clint Smith, Annette Gordon-Reed & Jason Myles

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 29, 2021 138:41

In today's jam-packed Best of 2021: Sam and Emma host author Clint Smith, staff writer at the Atlantic, to discuss his new book, How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America on how the legacy of slavery has been passed down and obscured through generations of storytelling, and the manner in which this manifests in modern society. They walk through the sites that Smith visits in his book – from Monticello, looking at how the stories of Thomas Jefferson perfectly encapsulate the cognitive dissonance of how Americans view ourselves, to Angola Prison as a symbol of modern enslavement literally build upon a plantation – and how the heirloom of ideology is passed down through every element of our society, through education, through infrastructure, and certainly through community policing measures. Smith explores his experiences at a Sons of Confederate Veterans celebration, and the importance of elevating empirical historical facts in making space for activists and organizers to express contemporary racism as carrying the remnants and residues of these systems through all elements of American society. Then Sam sits down with with Harvard history professor Annette Gordon-Reed on her new book, On Juneteenth, which explores the Texas roots and national consciousness of the holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the South. Beginning in the 1500s, Gordon-Reed walks us through the arrival of slavery in Texas with Spanish settlers, and its development as an Enslaver's Republic as it broke away from Mexico and U.S. slaveholders ventured into the state to capitalize on the protection of the industry. Then, they discuss Gordon Granger's arrival in Texas on June 19, 1865, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, and the active and direct removal of status from former slave owners and deliverance of autonomy to Black freed folk, before they move into the violence of reconstruction in Texas and the South. Professor Gordon-Reed then walks through the importance of Juneteenth since the arrival of Granger, with the purchasing of what would become Emancipation Park in Houston as a grounds for celebration directly following it, why this day, in particular, took off as a celebration of manumission, and how Juneteenth has come into more widespread popularity. Lastly, Sam and Emma are joined by Jason Myles, co-host of the This Is Revolution podcast, as they dissect his Medium article, “I Was a Teenage Anarchist," on the growth of the punk movement around the concepts of authenticity and deconstruction, how that hindered its growth and ability to alter the mainstream, instead, setting it up to be absorbed by the machine, and what that can teach us about the state of the online left today. Best of 2021: How 9/11 Permanently Changed American National Security w/ Russ Feingold & David Feldman

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2021 102:01

In today's best of 2021: Sam hosts Russ Feingold, President of the American Constitution Society and former United States Senator from Wisconsin, to discuss the legacy 9/11 has had on the American national security state, and what to expect going forward, to discuss the legacy 9/11 has had on the American national security state, and what to expect going forward. Senator Feingold starts off by jumping back to the first reports of the attacks trickling in nearly twenty years ago, and what his experiences on Capitol Hill were like as flight 93 approached DC. Then, he and Sam get into the political response in each branch of the US government, starting with George W. Bush's response, developing from what Senator Feingold saw as one of the greatest presidential speeches, immediately following 9/11, to, within days, capitalizing on the horror to progress the conservative agenda around both the Iraq War and with the Patriot Act with his “axis of evil” speech. Sam and Russ explore how the Patriot Act was brought to the floor, recalling why Senator Feingold was the only Senator at that time to vote against the bill, including the elements in the bill that clearly had nothing to do with terrorism alongside the conservative exploitation of the moment to bolster their run to take back the house in 2002. Next, the jump into the similar role played by Democrats in approving the Iraq War – outside of those like Feingold and Wellstone – and what it took for them to come around on it, including how resistance to the war bolstered Obama's 2008 run. They then jump into the years under Obama, and how his deference to the FBI and military allowed the progression of the Military State to continue to infringe on the liberties of citizens and non-citizens alike, before they wrap up the interview with a conversation on the developments of that we have seen in the role of SCOTUS over the last two decades, moving from the failures of Bush v. Gore in 2000 to the obstructionism of McConnell and the build of the current Court. Sam concludes the free half with a review of the Greg Gutfeld comedy hour hitting all of the key conservative comedy pieces, including wives that hate their husbands, ethnicity jokes, and laughing at whatever Donald Trump says. Then, the ever emotionally intelligent David Feldman, of the David Feldman Show, joins to discuss the childish nature of marching for M4A, the importance of anonymous donation – such as his most recent gift to the Michael Brooks Legacy Foundation – and why Jimmy Dore, the true everyman moron that always gets it right, nailed his three-dimensional diarrhea on the American oligarchy, before Feldman connects this back to the march for M4A, and why the true oligarchs (AOC and the Squad) are the real reason M4A hasn't come to pass. In the first Best Of of 2021: Andreas Malm joins Sam to discuss his new book, How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Learning to Fight in a World on Fire. Andreas begins by explaining that while the pandemic has temporarily tamped down the climate movement, it has simultaneously led to a 7% drop in world-wide emissions and demonstrated how government can effectively intervene in the private sector during a crisis. Then, Sam asks Andreas to explain the two strategies of the climate movement, one being putting pressure on the government to pass policy and the other being reducing profits of fossil fuel companies through physically shutting down their operations. Andreas discusses the limitations of peaceful climate activism and argues for the need for a more radical flank in the movement. And finally, as it turns out, renewable energy is actually much cheaper to produce, but companies refuse to switch over because they can get away with a much higher markup on fossil fuels than they would be able to on renewables.   Then, Judy Gold joins the program to celebrate Trump's defeat with special guest Donald Trump! Comedian James Austin Johnson sticks around to discuss growing up an evangelical Christian, conservative comedy, and how his Republican family members like his Trump impression. 2745 - The Last Stand in the War On Christmas w/ Brandon Sutton & Matt Binder

It's the FINAL live show of 2021! Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton IN-STUDIO, alongside Matt Binder for the WHOLE show, to round up the week in news, and reflect on the year that was. They begin by covering the recent NYT scoop on the FBI's infiltration into Black Lives Matter protests in Portland last year, in which they employed mass surveillance and entrapment tactics to round up leftists for vandalism or having arms, as well as the wild contrast between these widespread efforts and the solo informant and lack of presence by the FBI at the Jan 6 insurrection. This allows Matt, Brandon, and Emma to look into the history of the FBI's infiltration of the left, and how, no matter the amount of self-victimization on the right, their complaints simply cannot compare to the levels of surveillance and oppression of leftist groups. Next, they cover Donald Trump, the racist clock, somehow being right twice yesterday, including his blunt shutdown of Candace Owens as he flaunts the three Trump vaccines and a critique of his wife's own NFT drive. This brings up a prolonged discussion of crypto's continuation of capitalist scams, and how this new frontier of the internet is working to commodify every element of the online world, ultimately serving the same speculative pockets that succeeded in running wild after 2008. They also touch on the new COVID pill, and explore where we're at two years into the pandemic. And in the Fun Half: Matt, Matt, Brandon, and Emma discuss the set up to the JFK assassination, Dave from Jamaica asks the hosts to remove one technological innovation from history and what they think about Trump's pro-vaccine rhetoric, before he and Brandon jump off into a discussion of Ice Cube's “Black. White.” race-swapping reality TV show from the aughts. Mike Huckabee and Donald Trump reflect on their reclamation of the Christmas spirit, and the crew brainstorms the best non-Christmassy Christmas movies. 2744 - Stopping Gentrification From Destroying Neighborhoods w/ Joe Margulies

Emma hosts Joe Margulies, Professor of Law and Government at Cornell University, to discuss his recent book Thanks For Everything (Now Get Out): Can We Restore Neighborhoods Without Destroying Them? on the never-ending process that is neoliberal gentrification, why it's so hard to stop, and what we can do to return the power to the neighborhoods we are so intent on “improving.” They begin by touching on why Professor Margulies decided to focus on a particularly devastated region of Providence, Rhode Island - Olneyville - rather than notorious gentrification hotbeds such as Brooklyn and Chicago, walking through the historical collapse, and eventual rebuilding of the neighborhood over the last century, before they look at how this process, as it exists, simply moves the neighborhood's residents from an environment of toxicity to an environment where they cannot afford to live in their own houses anymore – as soon as it becomes safer, the reckoning begins. This brings Professor Margulies and Emma to the topic of neoliberalism and how this has massively spurred the gentrification process, including looking at its carceral mindset that addresses poverty and houselessness with imprisonment rather than money and housing, puts the only agency and power in the hands of external non-profits rather than community members, and only seeks transformation for capital gains of investors rather than to grow the capital of the neighborhood itself. This allows them to discuss the role of non-profits and incentives such as Opportunity Zones in ensuring that the only winners from neighborhood investment are for gentrifiers and investors, before they wrap up the interview by touching on Professor Margulies' concept of “neighborhood trusts” and how they can support a community-led investment that keeps the agency and fruits of labor in the hands of the residents.  Emma also touches on the devastation of the monoclonal antibody supplies and her continued support for Odell Beckham Jr. And in the Fun Half: Matt Lech takes the stage to discuss recent revelations on the JFK assassination, walking through the lack of credibility in the traditional “lone gunman” narrative, the CIA's pre-existing relationship with Lee Harvey Oswald, and why the conspiracy should empower the public, before he highlights Jefferson Morley's recent exploration of the legacy of doubt amidst Kennedy's closest allies, and the integral role of anti-communism. He and Emma also cover updates on the Aguilera-Mederos truck accident and Build Back Better, Nathanial from Fresno updates us on CA's redistricting, and Eric Adams reminds us that as a former cop, he still has the right to abuse citizens. 2742 - Conservative Populism and the Gospel of Victimhood w/ Paul Elliott Johnson

Emma hosts Paul Elliott Johnson, Assistant Professor of Communications at the University of Pittsburgh, to discuss his recent book I The People: The Rhetoric of Conservative Populism, on the transformation of the conservative populist movements over the last century, and how they worked to define, and redefine, white America. Professor Johnson first works to define the malleable characteristics that guide conservative values, such as whiteness, the ability to make free decisions, and economic viability, before he and Emma get into the actual way that the right sought to define America, by its opposition to Blackness. This brings them to a quick exploration of the Black radical tradition, and its start with an emphasis on experience, before working to unpack how Blackness was used as a designation of pathological danger and negativity, and what it means to be un-American, from the "Welfare Queen" trope to healthcare. Professor Johnson then dives into how the end of the cold war put the US on the edge, ending their competition with the USSR which had driven their social justice advancements, technological advancements, and economic development over the last few decades, looking particularly at Reagan assuming his role at the pinnacle of conservatism working to join both libertarian conservatives and traditionalists against the threat of Blackness, and slavery at the hand of the state. He and Emma also dive into his more overt examples of juxtaposing true America with Blackness, as seen with his coining of the "Welfare Queen" term, and how this allowed him to put Blackness in the backseat during his 1984 reelection, instead focusing on the beauty of consumption and whiteness. They also explore figures like Newt Gingrich and how they shaped the identity of the American conservative in the ‘90s, with a focus on the angry white finance man, before wrapping up the interview by looking at the effect of the 2008 financial crisis in nearly undermining the real divides in the US, and how the Tea Party worked to completely obscure that through a re-establishment of Blackness and the slavery of the state under Obama as central threats to the US, ultimately working to the election of Donald Trump as a white, hyper-masculine head of the movement. Emma also covers Joe Manchin tanking Build Back Better, AKA what every leftist knew his Build Back Better goal was, as well as Bernie's response, and Chile's election. And in the Fun Half: Matt Lech gives a myth-busting seminar on Socialism's efficacy in Latin America in the wake of Boric's successful presidential campaign in Chile, Kowalski calls in to talk cashews impact on climate change, and the crew explores Charlamagne Tha God breaking down Kamala Harris in an interview with a simple Manchin-related question. 2741 - Has Biden Actually Done Anything In BBB Negotiations? w/ Alex Pareene & Matthew Film Guy

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, contributing editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack to round up the week in news. They kick off the show with updates on the Kellogg's unionization effort, Omicron, and Tucker Carlson's prostate (not a metaphor for his mouth). Then, Alex joins as they cover the punting of the BBB into the business of the next Democratic administration, be it next term or next decade, the admin blaming the 50/50 Senate, and the absurd incompetence both in blowing this opportunity, and not even realizing the massive impact in the midterms and moving forwards that this will likely have. This brings them to the state of democratic leadership, Congress' realization that they can actually just let good things expire instead of killing them, and Larry Kudlow comparing Joe Manchin to Elon Musk due to their ingenuity, rather than the ability to stifle and misdirect innovation. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matthew Film Guy to walk through what's on his plate, what he's been watching, and what editors actually do. Sam gets lost in the film technology of the 80s, they discuss Matthew's upcoming project, and dive into getting personal with the Beatles with “Get Back.” And in the Fun Half: Tim Pool once again makes the mistake of debating someone who cares and knows what they're talking about, Brandon stops by to bring some boxes of sweets and his winning attitude, and Sam relives his glory days as they watch his early aughts takedown of Bob Knight over the war on Christmas, reminding him that the world really hasn't changed that much. DeSantis announces his “Stop Woke Act,” as he continues his metamorphosis into Dollar Store Trump, Marc Lamont Hill stumps Christian Walker by asking for examples, and Tucker Carlson discusses Anarcho-Tyranny with King of the working class, Kyle Rittenhouse, plus, your IMs! 2740 - The U.S. Right-Wing Paranoia We're Stuck With w/ Ted H. Miller

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 16, 2021 62:53

Emma hosts Ted H. Miller, associate teaching professor at Northeastern University, to discuss his recent book A Conspiratorial Life: Robert Welch, the John Birch Society, and the Revolution of American Conservatism, on the anti-communist paranoia that helped found the educational and political beliefs that define modern conservatism. Professor Miller begins with the birth of Robert Welch, eventual founder of the John Birch Society, at the end of the 19th Century, to a family engrained in the lost cause movement and fearful of an encroaching monopolizing eastern establishment, before exploring how Welch's profession as a Candyman bolstered this tendency towards conspiracy. Next, they move towards the political developments in the first half of the 20th Century that pushed him towards the founding of the John Birch Society in 1958, starting with FDR's new deal, with Welch fully pivoting to McCarthyist fear-mongering after China's transition to communism and William Taft's loss to Dwight Eisenhower solidified his belief that the U.S., like China, was being unwillingly taken over by communists. They dive into the extent of his conspiracy and paranoia during these years, including the belief that both of the Sputnik launches were faked by the U.S., as well as the Cuban missile crisis manufacturing the idea that Russia and Cuba had missile-launching capacities. Emma and Professor Miller then look into the role of William F Buckley in chronicling the conservative movement, publicly pushing back against Welch and the John Birch Society while further incorporating their educational agenda into electoral tactics. This brings us to the Kennedy administration, which saw a few key figures and concepts come into the fold of paranoia, including Reagan's claim that under the “boyish locks of hair” laid “Karl Marx,” Dan Smoot's creation of the concept of a “deep state,” and claims of false flag assassination attempts against Gerald Ford in the 70s. They wrap up the interview by discussing how the Reagan revolution of conservatism solidified the Robert Welch ideology into the party, finally bringing about the policies necessary for a worldview defined by evangelism and conspiracy, and look at how far ahead of the modern GOP positions Welch was. Emma also covers the devastating loss of bell hooks, and Pelosi reminding us that Congresspeople deserve to exploit the stock market too. And in the Fun Half: Matt and Brandon join Emma as they discuss Stephen Crowder getting one strike away from coming out – I mean, being forced out – of the Youtube world, Kasey Lee from Spokane raises concerns about the Fed's report on large amounts of government spending (it's fine), and Lindsey Graham (OmegaSpectrum from the IM's) offers a surprise make-up call then asks for the crew's takes on Eric Adams. This brings them to Adams's announcement of his new police chief in front of a mural of people who the NYPD would have probably planted evidence on at the time, a teen tech lord's pitch for Donald Trump's wall, and Ilya from Quebec explores emerging Islamophobic law in Canada. They also cover NFTV starting out as unoriginal as Marvel's copy/paste series concepts, plus, your calls and IMs! 2739 - What You Need To Know For Your Future w/ James W. Russell

Sam hosts James W. Russell, public policy affiliate scholar at Portland State University, to discuss his recent book The Labor Guide to Retirement Plans: For Union Organizers and Employees, on the importance of fighting for good end-of-life security and how employers and banks have capitalized off of the switch from pensions to 401ks. Russell and Sam begin by working to define and differentiate these two retirement plans, tracing the surge in 401ks back to the 1981 decision from the Reagan Treasury Department to make 401ks a valid substitute for a defined-benefits pension plan, rather than an additional tactic, and exploring why neoliberalism sought the switch, giving flexibility to the employer while shifting all of the risk onto the shoulders of the employee. Next, they dive into the role of labor organizing in the fight for better retirements, exploring instances of solidarity against two-tiered plans for legacy and incoming workers, and how unions can fight against what has arguably been the largest expropriation of workers' income over the last three decades. They return to the topic of neoliberalism, diving into George W. Bush's failed attempts to privatize social security, and the failure of the successful attempts to privatize these institutions in Chile under a Milton-Friedman-Influenced Pinochet regime. They wrap up with the role of conservative think tanks in driving privatization of retirement plans, before looking at what we can do as individuals, and organized groups, in fighting for better and more available pension plans for American workers. Sam also covers Cuomo's corrupt book deal, LIU union-busting, and Fox News' personalities reacting to their leaked 1/6 texts, including the case of a missing Brian Kilmeade. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR crew cover Christian Walker's personal sacrifices for his wealth (just having to deal with Herschel Walker as his father), the devastation of Hawaii's primary water supplies at the hands of the U.S. Navy's waste, and Dave Rubin's wistful goodbye to California. Brian from Minneapolis calls in to discuss paramilitary terrorism against Zapatista farmers in Mexico, Stub Lord from Scottsdale chastises Matt and gives Sam some efficiency management tips, then Ben Shapiro reminds us of the classic Mandela effect that causes us to forget that the Loan Baron in Its a Wonderful Life was the hero all along. Stephen Crowder pivots perfectly from blatant racism to Omicron misinformation, and Nathan from Florida discusses the dumdum left's orbit and lack of organizing, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam breaks down what's to come in the week in news, from the continuing Build Back Better negotiations to updates on the court, labor, COVID and more! Sam is then joined by newly Twitch-banned Hasan Piker! He and the MR crew start off with Peter Doocy asking Jen Psaki about the war zone that is Christmas crime sprees as seen in the attack on the Fox News Christmas tree, before looking at the reactionary reporting on people leaving their jobs due to vaccine mandates, including a whopping 27 Air Force members. Next, they jump into the Meadows news, walking through the idiocy of turning over all of the relevant documents before refusing to testify, why Trump was able to scare him out of testifying, and the incredible 1/6 texts from notoriously reasonable characters Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, and Donald Trump Jr. pleading with Trump's Chief of Staff. Next, Hasan joins Sam for the first inaugural Crackers & Cheese segment (missing the cheese), as they explore Hasan's recent ban from Twitch, and how bringing the “C-word” into the category of bannable slurs capitulates to white fragility and identity politics by ignoring the importance of contextual systemic subjugation. From here, they cover the importance, in general, of Terms of Service, and of de-platforming in response to overreach, discussing how a lack of ToS tends to lead to Nazis, pedophiles, and/or nazi-pedophiles, before looking at how media can and cannot encourage shifts in cultural consciousness, the importance of media aligning with existing views on material reality and inequality, and how Right Wing astroturf campaigns brilliantly and destructively unite culture war and weirdly specific policy to capitalize on this. And in the Fun Half: The MR Crew takes on the importance of OSHA and disaster regulations in the wake of the Kentucky tornado and the multiple instances of employer-forced danger that resulted in countless deaths. Sam also gets the opportunity to differentiate types of inflation, and Danny from Culver City calls in to discuss the imprisonment of Daniel Baker, an anarchist who posted about armed defense of the Capitol after Jan 6th. 2737 - The Myth of the "Good War" w/ Elizabeth Samet

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2021 72:19

Sam and Emma host Elizabeth Samet, professor of English at West Point, to discuss her recent book Looking for the Good War: American Amnesia and the Violent Pursuit of Happiness, on the mythology behind the Americanized narrative of WWII, how it came to prevalence, and the role Tom Brokaw and Stephen Spielberg have to play. Professor Samet walks through the six myths she identifies throughout U.S. history, with the first – that the U.S. could not wait any longer to liberate the world from the growing threat of fascism and tyranny – starting to be manufactured as soon as the U.S. got its foot into the war, as she, Emma, and Sam dive into the isolationist nature of the US in the first few decades of the 20th Century, and the existing documents and pamphlets for soldiers attempting to revise this history to bolster their faith in the effort. Next, they look at the creation of a narrative of complete unity around this war effort in the wake of wars in the second half of the century, like Vietnam, which created division between the public and the military, which, along with a narrative exaggerating the sacrifices on our home front, worked to paint a picture of the Greatest Generation and their war as a collective American effort. They also cover the birth of the narratives of the U.S. as a liberator whose military will be greeted with open arms, which we would see repeated countless more times, most notably in the Iraq war, and the idea that this, like all U.S. wars, had a happy ending. This, at last, brings them to how these narratives were ultimately woven together, to create the final myth, which is that all of these narratives have been accepted and true since the beginning of the war. They explore how the baby boomer generation, through the works of Stephen Ambrose, Tom Brokaw, and Stephen Spielberg, among many others, revised and unified the narrative of their parents' generation to help a country whose confidence has been shaken to regain an earlier luster. They wrap up the interview by looking at the film noir cliché around WWII and its veterans, as well as looking at the current state of public opinion on our veterans, and how it maintains a bit of a contradiction on how we want to think about them. Sam and Emma also discuss the devastation of the tornado in Kentucky, its role as one more “once in a generation event” that's occurred this year, and the hypocrisy of libertarian ideology. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive into the announcement by the Biden admin that they would resume student debt collection, and the absurdity of a country that attempts to make a profit off of an educated populace, while Chris from Austin calls in to talk health policy, both federal and personal. They also look at Stuart Varney's coverage of the destruction of Seattle by a single city council member – Kshama Sawant – who helped bring about a $15 minimum wage, before moving onto the U.K. Court's decision regarding Julian Assange's extradition to the U.S., and contrast how it has been reported, from Joe Scarborough to Mehdi Hasan, before looking at Crowder capitalizing on the incredible masculinity he perceives emanating from Kyle Rittenhouse, and hearing Dan the Objectivist return to discuss how threats to well being aren't coercion, plus, your calls and IMs! 2736 - What Is The Endgame Of The January 6th Commission? w/ Heather Digby Parton & Andy Kindler

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 10, 2021 107:17

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon and proprietor of the Hullaballoo blog, to round up the week in news. Sam and Emma start out by commemorating the historic Starbucks union vote in Buffalo. Then, Sam, Emma, and Digby dive into the numerous January 6th-related revelations that have come out in the past few weeks, starting with Mark Meadows withdrawing his cooperation with the investigation, most likely due to his fear of incurring Trump's wrath for disclosing his COVID status in his book from last year, as well as Steve Bannon's delayed contempt trial going into July 2022. Digby dives into Meadows history as a garden-variety dolt, and how Trump surrounds himself with obsequious yes-men, conflating loyalty with competence. They then dive into the recently disclosed PowerPoint coup plot document that Meadows turned over to the Jan. 6th committee, something that new Fox News outcast Lara Logan seemed to have on hand before Jan. 6th. They then discuss Trump's year plus-long obsession with the election results, the demographics of the Jan. 6th rioters, as well as the recent Barton Gellman piece in the Atlantic about election fraud and theft becoming standard GOP orthodoxy, with the Bush v. Gore "independent legislature theory" becoming a bedrock of that. Digby, Sam and Emma then touch on how this relates to Mitch McConnell's deal with Chuck Schumer on the debt ceiling, and how Lindsey Graham mounted a revolt amongst the Senate Trump-faithful to that deal, underscoring the deep fear many rank and file GOPers still have of Trump's wrath (think Brad Raffensperger). They then take a look at the extremely bizarre video that came out of Kanye West's publicist threatening a Georgia election worker to admit to election fraud in the state, the Democrats completely unprepared and limp response to all of these new threats of far-right violence being mainstreamed, the bombshell National Guard report about how the Army lied about their preparations to defend the Capitol on Jan. 6th, the deficiencies of the 50/50 Senate, the potential 2022-2024 hangover for Dem voters based on how little they've received after 2018 and 2020, and how state Dems are unwilling to go for the jugular in re-districting in states like Maryland.   Then, Sam and Emma are joined by comedian/Cameo celebrity  Andy Kindler, host of the Thought Spiral podcast! Andy, Sam, and Emma reflect on Bob Dole, lion of the Senate, as well as Andy's haunting Zoom setup and the progress of Sam's shingles vaccine. Then Sam, Andy, and Emma dive into Jim Breuer, new far-right comedy icon, and his positions on jesters, and whether cockatoos really talk about how much they love Dr. Fauci. They take a deeper dive into Clay Clark's psychotic Reawaken America tour, Dr. Oz, Dr. Drew, Celebrity Rehab, and how Thought Spiral is the #1 podcast for white Jews over 59. And in the Fun Half, Reverend Jacque DeGraff evokes Pearl Harbor at the Fox News tree resurrection, the San Diego Board of Supervisors gets a taste of anti-vax Mariah Carey, Lauren Boebert expands upon her Special Forces FART team in Congress, and Tucker Carlson speaks with a Jan. 6th lawyer about the insurrection's FBI "agent provocateur" (the guy is a amateur St. Louis Cardinals mascot who loves Tucker.) 2735 - The New American Aristocracy w/ Matthew Stewart

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2021 66:25

Emma hosts philosopher and historian Matthew Stewart to discuss his recent book The 9.9 Percent: The New Aristocracy That Is Entrenching Inequality And Warping Our Culture, on the class of people that cement the divide between the top .1%, and the bottom 90%. They begin by addressing what this segment is, exploring the people that neither make up corporate executive levels nor the working class, and the rapid isolation of this group – both physically and economically. Looking into the geographical elements, Matthew and Emma explore how certain white neighborhoods have isolated the ability to build wealth and stability by dominating the worlds of political regulations and real estate, and how this came as a response to their built wealth, rather than being a reflection of the intelligence that help bring them there.  Next, they dive into the social developments around this isolation, the culture of parental curation that has developed, and how extreme inequality has shown to cause more extreme parenting tactics as the risks of the world grow around you, before they look at how the creation of this aristocracy class has also coincided with an incredible drop in social mobility in the US. They also touch on the role of higher education in bolstering both the legitimacy and exclusivity of this class, before they get into how race is built into this inequality, from the clear disproportion of demographics between the top .1 and 9.9 percent and the US as a whole, to real estate discrimination, and how the discussion of race is explicitly disconnected from economic inequality. They wrap up the interview by touching on the collective nature of stress and how the current system piles stress on the bottom 90%, while representing it as an individual struggle, before Emma and Matthew walk through the Venn diagram between aristocracy class and the professional-managerial class. Emma also touches on Tucker and Nigel Farage debating whether Boris Johnson was feminized by COVID or his wife, and a Starbucks manager's whistleblowing on union-busting. And in the Fun Half: Matt and Brandon join Emma as they take on the Fox Square Bloody Christmas incident, which Fox and friends aptly dubs as a hate crime against the protected class of conservative talking heads, Bobby from FL calls in to discuss the growing red hue of Florida's political lean, and Rep. Erica Layon reminds us that the three-fifths clause was actually a pro-Black sentiment. Felix from Manhattan ignites Emma's inner edge lord by accidentally referring to Chess as a sport during a crypto exchange, and Warren from Toronto discusses holding our political leaders accountable. They also cover the success of the Buffalo Starbucks' unionization effort, plus, your calls and IMs! 2734 - American Capitalism In 4 Different Ages w/ Jonathan Levy

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2021 93:33

Sam and Emma host Jonathan Levy, professor of History at the University of Chicago, to discuss his recent book Ages of American Capitalism: A History of the United States. Sam and Emma begin by discussing the newly passed defense policy bill and debt limit increase in the House, which includes a huge weapons sale to Saudi Arabia, something the strange bedfellows of Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders completely agree is a complete slap in the face to the suffering Yemeni people. Then they dive in with Professor Levy about the origins of capitalism in America starting in 1660, where they define capitalism and capital itself, before diving into the question of whether exploitation is intrinsic to capitalism, as well as its relationship to labor. They then discuss the different types of liquidity, before diving into the centrality of empire, specifically the British, empire to the first stage of capitalism. Levy also expands upon how geopolitical spread was crucial to expanding capitalism in the U.S. at this time, and this happened primarily through war-making and the expansion of slavery. Sam, Emma, and Jonathan then plumb the depths of whether capitalism could exist without slavery in the U.S., or if specifically the next era of capitalism, the Industrial Revolution could without it. Jonathan then explains how crucial the Louisiana Purchase and the Haitian Revolution were to the capitalist expansion, before going into how the Industrial Revolution may have been the greatest break in civilization since that of the transition from hunter gatherers to settler colonists. He then explains how this period was defined by speculation, something that we can see manifested today in something like stock buybacks. Going into the age of control, where the New Deal propped up the idea of the male breadwinner, as well as the idea of labor rights and wage parity being the definition of citizenry rather than property ownership, Levy also characterizes the New Deal as not as progressive as some admirers may tend to believe, mostly due to its focus on private enterprise over public investment. Sam, Emma, and Jonathan end on summarizing the post-New Deal aftereffects from those private emphases that ultimately result in massive inflation and economic turmoil during the late 70's and the Carter Administration, coinciding with the "Volcker shock", leading to the short-termism, debt-focused Clinton years. Finally, they discuss the turn towards austerity in the 2010's, how Obama essentially re-made the old economic order in the wake of the 2008 crash, and how the Trump administration and COVID completely fragmented that order, leading to some truly remarkable developments like the massive strike wave we saw this fall. And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew discuss AOC calling out the Senate parliamentarian in favor of a pathway to citizenship in the BBB bill, Matt cautioning that there won't be any spring rain frolicking with Dems once the GOP takes House control with Speaker Donald J. Trump replacing Pelosi, Elon Musk giving his thoughts on the bloodthirsty government and pesky electric vehicle subsidies that he would benefit (and already does) benefit from, Ben Shapiro seeing COVID as the new pagan God of the left, and Dave Rubin comparing liberals to literally Cobra Commander from GI Joe controlling a weather machine. 2733 - The Mass Work Exodus And Lina Khan's First Big Stand At The FTC w/ David Dayen

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2021 75:14

Sam and Emma host David Dayen, Executive Editor at The American Prospect, to discuss his recent project "The Great Escape", about the mass quitting trend in the labor market, as well as his new piece "Lina Khan Cashes in Her Chips." They begin by confronting the numbers of the recent wave of resignations, including 4.4 million in the month of September, breaking the record set in August, making it a total of 3.3% of the American workforce leaving their jobs over those two months. David then dives into his research behind this movement, looking at both the more obvious reasons for this mass exodus, including the pandemic inflammation of already horrendous working conditions and wages, before getting into the more emotional revelations that have taken place over the workforce, including the pandemic's emphasis on the dignity of their work in rhetoric, while in reality they were continuously exploited, as well as social media's role in bolstering labor solidarity movements. This brings David and Sam to bring us back to their childhood, exploring the parallels we see with the pandemic of the Black Plague in the 1300s, which inspired England's first labor laws, and saw a period of wage improvements among the serfs and peasants. They wrap up the interview by looking at David's article on Linda Khan's FTC filing an anti-trust suit in a bipartisan show of power against vertical mergers. Sam and Emma also cover Jen Psaki's insane condescension in the face of a very reasonable question regarding federal COVID infrastructure. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki joins Sam and Emma as they explore the next steps for the Cuomo brothers (perhaps as guest lecturers at the University of Austin) and Don Lemon falling into the exact same corruption Chris did. Sean Spicer gets Trump to ramble against Pence, before getting into the real insurrection that happened on November 3rd, then the crew discusses the developments around the Army's obstruction of the facts about Jan 6th, and John Eastman's role in Pence's blueprint. They also cover how progressive policies have trickled out of Biden's agenda, and the state of vaccine skepticism today, and its base in Trump's undermining of the public health response, before touching on Boris Johnson's detective moment, as he breaks out the monocle magnifying glass to look for evidence of cocaine on parliament's toilet seats, plus, your calls and IMs!   Purchase tickets for the live show in Boston on January 16th HERE! https://thewilbur.com/artist/majority-report/ Become a member at JoinTheMajorityReport.com Subscribe to the AMQuickie newsletter here. 2732 - How And Why Generations Of Women Have Struggled To Balance Work And Family w/ Claudia Goldin

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2021 80:02

Sam and Emma host Claudia Goldin, Professor of Economics at Harvard University, to discuss her recent book Career and Family: Women's Century-Long Journey Toward Equity, on the history of women's entry into the workforce and how they transitioned from a choice between career or family, to an opportunity to have both – even with many lingering effects of inequity today. After Professor Goldin clarifies the boundaries of her data collection, and why she focuses on women with a college degree, they begin walking through the numbers – starting with women who graduated in the first two decades of the 20th Century, she, Sam, and Emma explore how college-educated women had an almost perfect 50/50 split between those who had a family and those that had a career, before we see a transition to family as women began getting married earlier throughout the 30s, 40s, and 50s. This led up to the late 60s and 70s, when, alongside changing infrastructure and social values, a shift started to occur, delaying the median age of marriage year by year over the next four decades. This brings Professor Goldin to the question of why this occurred, looking at social developments, from shifting away from policies explicitly aimed at excluding married women from certain segments of the workforce, to later technological advancements with birth control and growing policies to make it accessible, before they dive into the state of gender inequity in careers today. Claudia Goldin walks Sam and Emma through the “time bind,” which is the greater rate of promotion and pay received by those who have lower caregiving responsibilities, and therefore can engage in “greedy work,” putting in hours and levels of effort that many people simply do not have the time for. They wrap up the interview with a quick debate on whether the effect of the pandemic on what constitutes reasonable levels of work will be lasting, and why, if not, we must see a reduction in the price of flexibility or price of care, if we want to reduce the inequity from this contrast. Sam and Emma also cover the recent economic issues roiling Afghanistan, leading to extreme famine, as well as Madison Cawthorn's statements on the floor, dubbing women “eternal vessels” for his reproductive capacities, and the dismissal of the disgraced Chris Cuomo for defending the disgraced Andrew Cuomo. And in the Fun Half: Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew cover the DSA decision on Jamaal Bowman, Jenna from San Fran boosts our egos, a caller discusses Verizon's recently announced partnership with Lockheed Martin, and Ilhan Omar flames the cowardice and corruption of the GOP to a shocked Jake Tapper. Kim Iversen, presents a new, pro-white twist on an old media critique, Mindy gives us a perfect uplifting holiday story, and Josh from Chicago discusses the very real effects of Theresa May's gutting of the NHS. 2731 - Will The 6-3 SCOTUS Finally Gut Roe? w/ Natalie Shure

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 3, 2021 63:12

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Natalie Shure, columnist at the New Republic  and health policy expert, to discuss developments in federal health policy to expect with upcoming legislation and Supreme Court decisions. They begin with the state of Roe v. Wade, as the American public waits for a decision on the Mississippi law banning abortion after fifteen weeks. They begin by simply looking at what a conservative Supreme Court means, with the Federalist Society having spent decades building a conservative force from the Circuit Courts up, with abortion as the primary litmus test, and how this can very easily counter the belief that Chief Justice Roberts will act as a counterbalance to the 6-3 conservative majority. After touching on the activist nature of this specific Court and how far they're willing to take this decision, Natalie, Emma, and Sam take on the effective impact of an overturn of Roe v. Wade, looking at the clearly classed boundaries between who can get around regional prohibitions and who cannot afford it. Next, Natalie walks Sam and Emma through the insulin copay caps in the Build Back Better bill, both exploring the incredibly important development that this represents, and how the general disaster that is our healthcare system leaves countless gaps where Americans will be left carrying the full freight price. They wrap up the interview by exploring the recent developments regarding the “Remain in Mexico” policy's reinstatement, touching on the Biden administration's representing the Democrats desire to reduce public criticism on immigration, despite campaign rhetoric, using the Courts as a cop-out of his promises, just as he recently did with domestic fracking. After giving some airtime to the upcoming Big Live, Sam and Emma also cover developments in job growth, and Lauren Fox keeps Kyrsten Sinema on her toes by not asking a single relevant follow-up question. And in the Fun Half: Kowalski from Nebraska clarifies some legal questions on the upcoming Roe v. Wade SCOTUS decision, Ben Shapiro reminds Democrats to calm down about abortion using his knowledge about the bone-dry vaginal reproductive system, and Kofi from PA discusses some anti-privatization wins. Emma talks Real Housewives, Tucker Carlson thanks Hunter Biden for passing on his legacy to his son, Buckley Carlson, and Donald Trump and Mike Pence make some statements on their legacy, in picture book form and insurrection-denial, respectively. 2730 - How The Rich Rigged Our Tax Code With "Opportunity Zones" w/ David Wessel

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2021 69:26

Emma hosts David Wessel, senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, to discuss his recent book Only the Rich Can Play: How Washington Works in the New Gilded Age., and how bipartisan legislation on Opportunity Zones has created a tax haven for the ultra-wealthy under the guise of investing in low-income communities. They begin by covering what Opportunity Zones are, and how they work, looking at tech mogul Sean Parker's ingenious idea to promote investment in low-income neighborhoods to combat geographic inequality by giving massive tax cuts on capital gains as a reward, and how it made its way into Trump's 2017 tax cuts, with help from Tim Scott and Cory Booker. After exploring the actual tax breaks and tax deferrals in the policy, they dive into the actual impact of the legislation, exploring how investment opportunities for the wealthy, unsurprisingly, has resulted in a focus on making capital gains on your capital gains rather than actually putting the tax break back into low-income communities. Next, David Wessel walks through concrete examples, looking at the massive investments in “Opportunity Zones” that include a Ritz Carlton condo complex and hotel in Portland, and a Goldman Sachs-backed complex in Baltimore, and the effective impact of federally-backed gentrification that the policy has created. This brings him and Emma to the real estate industry and its focus on the exploitation of legislation, exploring the Mandalay Bay Opportunity Zone convention that saw wealthy investors come together and explore their new opportunities for tax avoidance, before they wrap up the interview by looking at the future of Opportunity Zones, including the billions of tax dollars it will lose in the coming decade, and whether or not it will meet any practical pushback. Emma also covers the nation waiting on SCOTUS' upcoming decision on Mississippi's abortion ban, the horrifying ramifications it could lead to, and Fox's anticipatory threats ahead of the conservative Court's vote. And in the Fun Half: Brandon and Matt join Emma to take on the role of musicals in this cultural moment, cover Brian Kilmeade continuing the whitewashing of the 80s with a discussion of the “overhyped” reaction to the AIDS epidemic, and BJ from Montana calls in on Governor Gianforte leaving Montana residents in ashes. They also cover puritan influencer Eric Metaxas' impure experience with COVID, Greenwald's poor pattern recognition as he goes after a Brazilian Petroleum Workers Union for their “privilege” in understanding the inefficiencies and exploitation in the philanthropy model, and Matt and Matt rant on cryptocurrency's scams, plus your calls and IMs! 2729 - The Ideas Behind "Participatory Economics" w/ Michael Albert

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2021 81:30

Sam and Emma host economist Michael Albert to discuss his recent book No Bosses: A New Economy For A Better World, on his theory of a third option of an allocation system, beyond free-markets and central planning, based around values of self-management, solidarity, diversity, equity, and a deconstruction of the division of labor. They begin by walking through what Albert means by “participatory economy,” and why the values he sets forwards are central to its functioning, before he, Emma, and Sam dive into why the demarkation of socioeconomic classes is so central to his program, looking at the alienating qualities of the concentration of power and decision-making in the professional-managerial class (what he calls the coordinator class). To emphasize this element, Michael Albert dives into experiences he had in Argentina in the wake of their 2001 financial crisis, working with democratized workplaces that found that, by maintaining the divisions of labor, alienation continued to find itself ingrained in unbalanced and task-based positions. Next, they dive into the role public schooling and higher education have in sorting and setting up the divide between the coordinator and task-compliant classes, before they move into the abolition of private property, but rather than putting it into the hands of the “state,” reserving it as a sort of “productive commons” where it is allocated based on responsible and socially valuable uses. Lastly, they dive into the allocation system that Albert envisions, as an evolving dialogue between workers and consumers that is aware of the necessity of pricing goods responsibly and clearly, and one that, unlike central planning or free-market systems, maintains dignity, empowers workers, promotes self-management, and maintains diversity and equity. Emma and Sam also dive into the disturbing instances of the Right's Islamophobic abuses of Ilhan Omar, alongside the bipartisan establishment's passive endorsement of this by refusing to hold GOP officials accountable. And in the Fun Half: Sam, Emma, and the MR crew unpack Michael Albert's new economic system, Matteo from Slovenia gives Sam space to wax about tax as they discuss the differences between income and VAT taxation, and Dick Durbin ponders the state of one Joe Manchin. Tucker finally finds a soft spot in his heart for brothers who defend sexual predators, before he is awe-inspired by Jason Whitlock's 40-second dash to replacement theory. Dr. Oz announces his candidacy in Pennsylvania, Jack from Albany calls in regarding the upcoming 2022 NY Primaries and Hochul's role as a wolf in sheep's clothing. Nancy Mace and Marjorie Taylor Greene give Kevin McCarthy trouble Democratic voters only wish their leadership would be able to achieve, plus, your calls and IMs! 2728 - A Dramatic New Understanding of Human History w/ David Wengrow

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 30, 2021 81:03

Sam and Emma host David Wengrow, Professor of Comparative Archaeology at University College London, to discuss his recent book The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity that he co-authored with David Graeber. They begin by clarifying what the old history was, which Professor Wengrow describes the “broad sweep of human history” that we see starting all the way back in the Enlightenment, with Hobbes and Rousseau theorizing on the “state of nature” which was the origin of all humanity, and how the nature of inequality in civilization developed from there. He discusses how deep these theories, which were simply parables for their own time, have ingrained themselves into historical perspectives, structuring them into a constantly linear mold, and why the discussion of the “origin” of social concepts inherently implies this model. Emma, Sam, and he briefly touch on the massive impact of indigenous philosophies on French Enlightenment thinking, and how European elites worked to undermine this inspiration, making out their views of social and wealth equality to be a “romanticization,” and, in fact, a reflection of being on a lower tier of civilized society. Next, Professor Wengrow is able to dive into the narrative of the book, looking as far back as possible with cohesive archeological and anthropological evidence for social organization, and how we see - rather than a line from basic, equal, and free, to complex, stratified, and structured civilization - examples of societies that are experimental and fluid, changing political, religious, and legal systems as they migrate and the seasons shift their needs. After giving brief overviews of these examples, Sam, Emma, and David wrap up the interview by diving into the question of “how we got stuck” in a cycle of reinforcing and naturalizing the existence of inequality, debt, and other elements of our society. Sam and Emma also cover some updates on the Omicron variant, and the contrast with that and Biden's consistently noncommittal responses to COVID. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki joins Sam and Emma as they cover her bout with Dan Bongino, Dana Loesch's fable of Bongo the gorilla's righteous segregation hyenas, and discuss Omicron. Lara Logan compares Fauci to Mengele in Fox's conspiracy zone, the crew covers Chris Cuomo's conflict of interest, and what the fallout will be, if there is any. 2727 - The Post-Thanksgiving Push Towards The Debt Cliff (Again) And A Government Shutdown This Friday

Sam and Emma catch up on the big Thanksgiving weekend's worth of news! They begin by looking forwards, running through what we might see in the upcoming Senate session, before Sam reflects on the anniversary of Mike Cernovich's attempted canceling of him (also known as Sam's birthday). Next, they move onto the state of the GOP after Lauren Boebert's increasingly Islamophobic statements about Ilhan Omar saw an absence of blowback from both sides, and cover Tulsi's sharp shift to the right as she discusses the Ahmaud Arbery case as proof of a lack of racism in the US. They wrap it up by covering the Omicron variant, the necessary steps Biden should take versus the ones he will, and how his press-release presidency has proved increasingly useless in the eyes of the American public, which they emphasize with a discussion of his Build Back Better plan and the obstruction of the Senate Parliamentarian, who was hired by his own party. They also touch on some special and not-so-special guests for the upcoming MR live show. And in the Fun Half: David from South Africa discusses global sanctions on his nation, and the absurdity of punishing a nation for having the proper infrastructure to discover new variants – which the US does not – and how this works with the Donald Trump “if we don't test, there won't be any issues” argument, as highlighted with a Jeanine Pirro guest. Alexis calls in from the non-ceded Spokane nation on recent fascist platforming going on in the area, including at the comedy club where she worked, and the MR team explores the incredible boost from the third shot, and Nick Fletcher whines to British parliament about being a man. 2725 - The Campaigns Against the Post Office and American Democracy w/ Christopher W. Shaw

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 24, 2021 51:09

Sam sits down with historian Christopher W. Shaw, to discuss his recent book First Class: The U.S. Postal Service, Democracy, and the Corporate Threat, on the rise of one of the most popular public services, and its precarious state in an era of privatization. They begin in the 18th century, with the beginnings of the postal system as a tool for patriot communication and military strategy, before it was picked up by the US government under George Washington, pivoting to the duty of transporting mail and, more importantly, news and newspapers, seen as a key element in linking and informing the population. The service spent the next century continuing to ingrain itself in the daily lives of Americans, regardless of economic success, with an 1851 law officially stating that deficit should not come into play with postal expansion, and following policies to continue to drive down the price of postage, including reduced pricing on paperback literature and the Rural Free Delivery (RFD) service. Working through the early-20th century, the postal service was seen as the role of the American government, until FDR's social policy expanded on that greatly, and then two world wars saw the US take on an international-military role, greatly expanding the role of its legislative and executive branches. This brings Shaw and Sam to the mid-1900s, and a pivot towards privatization with neoconservatism and neoliberalism taking hold of US politics – they explore how the impact of a shift from railway to highway infrastructure and the 1971 shift to self-funding through postage that created the USPS as we know it, before they look at the influence of Reaganomics and how the postal service was seen as a key arena in the goals of privatization. After touching on the developments in the service over the last couple of decades, Christopher and Sam dive into the current state of the USPS in the wake of the Trump administration and a massive shift in the importance of mail-in voting. They wrap up the interview by looking at the development of postal banking, and discussing what types of expansion the postal service could and should employ moving forwards. 2724 - How To Explain The Explosive Growth Of School Vouchers In The U.S. w/ Ursula Hackett

Emma hosts Ursula Hackett, Senior Lecturer in Politics at Royal Holloway University of London, to discuss her recent book America's Voucher Politics: How Elites Learned to Hide The State. Emma starts the show by touching upon the seemingly endless Chris Christie Redemption Tour that ends with Laura Ingraham grilling him as to whether he'll fall in line when Trump inevitably runs in 2024. Then Emma starts out her conversation with Ursula by discussing the early history of school vouchers, and how since 2010 the concerted effort by the far-right, both politically and judicially, sped up the prevalence of them in the United States significantly. They then touch on how this phenomenon is uniquely American, and that historically voucher programs started before the Brown v. Board of Ed decision, but continued as a concerted effort to block de-segregation efforts through privatizing education. Ursula speaks to the idea of "attenuated governance" and the "submerged state", where social spending gets diluted through privatizing, and where a citizenry doesn't attribute policy prescriptions and benefits to the people who actually enacted them because they're so obscured in bureaucracy and red tape, something that Emma sees as a real failure of Congressional Democrats and Dems in general. They then touch on some of former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's policies like her failed attempt to install educations savings accounts in her home state of Michigan, and then end on the importance of the coordinated effort, that being one of many, of the right to sideline and demonize teacher's unions in favor of "school choice" and privatization. Emma then discusses Kyle Rittenhouse talking out of two sides of his mouth regarding the politicizing of his fateful (and fatal) night in Kenosha Wisconsin before being joined by Nomiki! They tackled Steven Crowders scorching take that American slavery had nothing to do with race (the 3/5ths Compromise would like a word...), Josh Hawley's cringey podcast about the Bible's take on men where he definitely lets his wife speak (she was silent the entire clip), and the Peng Shuai situation in China and how CNN is being censored on Chinese airwaves from even covering it. 2723 - Violence and Truth After Emancipation w/ William A. Blair

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2021 77:32

Sam hosts William A. Blair, Professor of Middle American History at Penn State University, to discuss his recent book The Record of Murders and Outrages: Racial Violence and the Fight Over Truth at the Dawn of Reconstruction, on how the true histories of reconstruction, both in the horrible violence and influential policy, has been obscured by a white supremacist “redemption narrative”. They begin by discussing the historical study of the reconstruction era, and the influence of the Dunning School on manipulating the narrative, as Professor Blair walks through the influence of William A. Dunning's thoughts on a group of historians that did state by state studies of reconstruction, finding it overwhelmingly as a time of little accomplishment, while downplaying and normalizing the presence of racial violence. Next, Professor Blair contextualizes the Dunning School's development in the 1920s with an overwhelming turn towards professionalized history within a moment dominated by mainstream racist pseudoscience, before he and Sam dive into the professor's study of contemporary sources of the time, looking first at the Freeman's Bureau, the first national welfare agency which worked to bolster freed Black American's transition into society, alongside keeping “the record of murders and outrages,” which tracked the overwhelming racial violence against Black folks in the South. Introducing the data officially in 1867 with the Reconstruction Acts, William and Sam explore how Congressional Republicans used the bureau as an investigative arm to surveil the state of the South's reconstruction, particularly focusing on the issue of violent voter suppression, which began to boil over after these acts, with the Ku Klux Klan's influence and violence reaching their first peak in 1868. Next, they move into the violence that took place at the time, parsing through the coverage of both more notorious massacres, like those in Memphis and New Orleans in 1866, and the myriad unknown and hardly-reported massacres throughout the rest of the south, all of which contributed to overwhelming voter suppression, and touch on the harrowing historical impossibility of genuinely tracing and acknowledging the trauma that took place. They also cover the ideological organizing of the southern Democrats, from Charles Blackford's letter for the 1889 local elections and the emphasis on not deserting the polls, like some deserted the Confederacy, to Birth of a Nation in the early 1900s. Lastly, Professor Blair and Sam explore how narrative spinning begins immediately in the aftermath of massive issues with an ideological split, with Edward Pollard's “Lost Cause” being published in 1866, and the Dunning School following quickly. Sam also covers the wake of the Rittenhouse decision, contrasting it with the coverage of the Ahmaud Arbery case, in which the defendant cited lynchings, not to refer to the racist murder, but the treatment of the murderers. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR crew cover the Daily Wire's discussion on the Rittenhouse decision, and Candace Owen's putting discussing her “vengeance for Kyle,” in a segment that should've been produced by Monster Energy, John from San Antonio calls in to discuss the Freedom to Vote act and helps clarify the tally on the swings in Congressional seats, Pat from Nebraska chats the hypocrisy of gun nuts, and Aaron from CA tries to do inflation for houses, forgetting that, just like there's always open jobs that don't offer enough, there are always open houses that simply are used for wealth hoarding. They also cover Seb Gorka and Kid Rock both choosing incredibly embarrassing ways to return to the spotlight, Tucker Carlson and Chuck Todd blank on questioning their interview subjects, and Senator Kennedy asks Saule Omarova to renounce her middle school, plus, your calls and IMs! 2722 - What Jordan Peterson Gets Wrong About "Structural Racism" w/ Jamelle Bouie, Jamie Peck & Jorge Rocha

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 19, 2021 96:20

Sam hosts Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to wrap up the week in news! And in the second half, Sam is joined by Jamie Peck, in her triumphant return to MR (!) and Jorge Rocha, co-hosts of the Everybody Loves Communism podcast! Jamelle starts off with a dive into his new 90's political-military thrillers podcast, before he and Sam get into the state of the Build Back Better bill, as it passes a House vote after a late night, in which Kevin McCarthy showed us why talking filibusters, while they force us to hear from some of the worst people, is drastically better than invoking cloture. Next, they get into the content of the bill, walking through the expansion in SALT deductions as an annoyingly large part of the $1.75 trillion package, as well as looking at the state of the Manchin and Sinema votes, and whether Democratic leadership successfully got rid of everything they didn't want, and included everything they did want. They also discuss the impact the passing of the bill is already having on the approval of the Democrats (other than Biden), and what this means heading into a midterm in which the GOP, simply by nature of re-gerrymandering borders, have picked up at least five very necessary seats. They wrap up the interview by touching on Bouie's recent piece for the NYT on structural racism, its relationship to capitalism's reliance on inequality, and what it would mean for remnants of racism in a truly restructured and redistributed society. Then, Jamie and Jorge hop on to discuss a variety of important audio projects they're working on, before getting into the state of the US's Democratic Socialist movement, and why, in the wake of the incredible leftist and abolitionist organizing that we saw with the George Floyd uprisings and COVID pandemic, the DSA has an essential task of taking a look outside of explicitly electoral organizing. Sam also covers John Kennedy misunderstanding comrade as a term of endearment in his fear-mongering during Saule Omarova's confirmation hearing. And in the Fun Half: After breaking down the announcement of the Rittenhouse decision, and the hypocrisy of the right screaming about being silenced when called racist, but being fully behind the murder of protesters. Next, Sam and the MR crew cover Kevin McCarthy's campaign to keep his house leadership position, centering the important issues of God and fentanyl in his country, Jordan Pederson reminds us that if you don't acknowledge structures, then no problem can structural, and Ben Shapiro says propaganda can't be animated. A Denver journalist takes on the incredibly low standards for Lauren Boebert, plus, your IMs!   Purchase tickets for the live show in Boston on January 16th HERE! https://thewilbur.com/artist/majority-report/ Become a member at JoinTheMajorityReport.com Subscribe to the AMQuickie newsletter here. 2721 - The Next Stages of the Opioid Epidemic w/ Sam Quinones

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2021 69:32

Emma hosts journalist Sam Quinones, to discuss his recent book The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope in the Time of Fentanyl and Meth, taking on the wave of synthetic drugs moving across North America over the last decade and a half, how they seeped through, and why they are so dangerous. They begin by jumping off of Quinones work “Dreamland” which helped build a lot of the language around the opioid epidemic that we use today, as they reflect on the promulgation of opioids through the pharmaceutical industry pressuring doctors to begin prescribing narcotic painkillers, like Vicodin and Oxycontin, and how it contributed to a wave of opioids seeping into the black market. This brings them to the takeover of synthetics in the drug trafficking world, which offered a variety of new benefits in comparison to the plant-based drugs, like marijuana and poppies, including uniformity, no requirement for land or agricultural workers, and no seasonal-dependent growth. This opened up the role of kingpin to anyone who can get their hands on the chemicals, as Quinones describes through a couple of stories on the earliest independent fentanyl-traffickers coming in from China and Mexico, after its birth in the US, seeing an already misused drug fall into the hands of non-medical-professionals as they act the role of the mixer, combining drugs with drugs to capitalize on addictive capacities. Lastly, they cover the major changes that moving to synthetics has had on the actual effects of the drug usage, with meth, particularly, featuring an entirely new base, P2P, that, much like fentanyl's massive potency, has produced much more severe drawbacks, including paranoia, before they briefly touch on what solutions are currently being presented by the US, and how that is, problematically, centered around incarceration. Emma also touches on the CBO scores coming back, to Manchin's chagrin, and the upcoming Julius Jones case and the morbid contradiction of killing in the name of justice. And in the Fun Half: Emma, Matt, and Brandon take on the GOP's most batshit violent characters, addressing Gosar's anime campaign video, and Boebert's violent defecation on the House floor, alongside AOC's killer speech on GOP nihilism to avoid accountability. They also touch on Havana Syndrome, ooh na-na, the Lakers new home at the biggest tribute to pyramid schemes since Giza, and the commuting of Julius Jones' sentence, before also touching on whether Queen Elizabeth II will emerge early to signal six more weeks of monarchical rule, Matt Walsh talks kids, birds, and sex, like the weird guy he is, and Andy from NYC calls in about Joe Rogan's politics and the value of his show. Phillip from StL also shines a light on Aaron Rodgers' chiropractic upbringing, and child trafficking issues in the midwest, plus, your calls and IMs! 2720 - The Importance of Insects to Our Survival w/ Dave Goulson

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2021 53:42

Sam and Emma host Dave Goulson, professor of biology at the University of Sussex, to discuss his recent book Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse, on the rampant decline of insect populations worldwide over the last few decades, and how the trend continuing could completely alter our relationships to crops and practically all plant life. Professor Goulson dives into the essential niches that insects fill, from their role as pollinators to being bio-control agents and recyclers of all sorts of life, as well as the ties between climate change and the insect apocalypse, both in terms of the issues that create them, and in how they reinforce each other. Next, he, Emma, and Sam discuss how this trend towards extinction is hitting the pollinating insects we appreciate (butterflies, bees) while the pest-like ones (mosquitoes, houseflies) have been able to adapt and thrive in human habitation, before they get into the effects we've seen, and what the future of this trend could look like, from hand-pollination to massive food scarcity. They also touch on the biggest drivers of insect extinction, with habitat loss at the top of the list, alongside insecticide, changing climates, even light pollution, and Professor Goulson reminds us of the ease with which this could be reversed, both on a structural and individual level. Sam and Emma also dive into the continued fear-mongering around inflation and the deficit when it comes to infrastructure, while we're about to pass a $780 billion defense budget and remind us of the dangers of nonstick pans as PFOS are revealed to be even more toxic than we thought. And in the Fun Half: Bro Flamingo calls in to discuss accountability and punishment, especially when it comes to the Rittenhouse case, Sam clarifies his position on being a socialist (he doesn't have one), and the crew comes up with a perfect solution to Alec from Minneapolis trying to shift his parents away from cable news: the Majority Report. Mehdi Hasan goes after Brad Raffensperger, forcing the issue of supporting Trump to the fore, Chris Christie gets shamed by Nicolle Wallace for criticizing MSNBC and CNN while letting Fox run wild, before he also births the discussion of the Mount Rushmore of Trump-Cucks. 2719 - CBO Score Purgatory

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2021 59:08

Sam and Emma break down what's to come in the week in news, from the reconciliation negotiations on the Hill, to updates on labor, the courts, and climate. They begin by covering the religious reaction to Universal Pre-K's non-discrimination requirement, and the news that September was a record-breaking month in terms of workers quitting jobs that simply did not appreciate their labor. They move forward to take on the upcoming Build Back Better bill, hopefully, to be signed in the coming days, and look through the new and old money piled into the investment in our public infrastructure, parsing through the policies around upgrading our electricity grid, interstate rails, broadband, climate resiliency, and “expanding transportation projects,” as well as getting into the incredible vagueness of those last two elements. Next, they look at the recent NYT report on a 2019 bombing in Syria in which the US massacred upwards of 80 women and children, before frantically working over the past two years to cover it up, as an Air Force lawyer unsuccessfully sought higher and higher backing for the necessary investigation. Sam and Emma look at the type of reporting that is relevant to this story, as well as what kind of reaction could be seen in the House and the Senate, and dive into the recent leak that surprised nobody, confirming that the Trump administration did, indeed, seek to undermine their own CDC as they attempted to manage their image in the run-up to the election. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki joins Sam and Emma as they discuss lead poisoning in US infrastructure, particularly in NYC, before Matty from Oregon calls in with one of the most interesting calls of the year, exploring his upbringing under a Right-Wing talk show host and how he and his siblings worked out of the shadows after leaving home. Laura Ingraham struggles to remember when her vaccine fear-mongering covered measles, and the MR crew discusses the insane stupidity of the Right's “coded language” from “Let's go Brandon” to Dick Morris having the gall to make fun of the genitalia in Pete Buttigieg's name.
