In years past, it was common to work for the same company from entry-level until retirement. But those days are long gone. There are no longer obvious ladders to climb or well-trodden paths to follow. Today’s guest on the Find Your Dream Job podcast, Bev Jones, says that if you want to be successful in your career, you have to behave like a CEO. This includes realizing that job hunting is a numbers game, and there will be losses on the way to the wins. Bev also shares how a mindset shift can help you bring new energy to your current job, and how to motivate yourself to do the things you don’t enjoy. About Our Guest: Bev Jones (www.linkedin.com/in/beverly-jones-coach-author/) is the author of “Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like a CEO: 50 Indispensable Tips to Help You Stay Afloat, Bounce Back, and Get Ahead at Work”. Being Indispensable
#59 Saying Yes In Order To Say No - Indispensable tips for Executive Assistants

Being Indispensable

Today's episode is sharing two tips from a recent keynote presentation I did in Sydney for Office Professionals Day.  Firstly, how thinking like a Sales Person can help you shift your minset... - It’s not their responsibility to buy, it’s your responsibility to sell - You may not want to sell but you that’s what you’re doing - You need to to sell your ideas, your requests, your issues, yourself! How if you can adopt this mindset and channel your inner sales person you will be more effective My advice is to sell what you can sell, make peace with what you can’t Secondly, try saying YES in order to say no! Your sole purpose is to support your manager or managers. Sometimes they will come to your desk when you are busy handling something already assigned and it’s easy to feel you are being interrupted. Yes. You are. But that is your job. Never underestimate the power of “yes” in your thoughts, attitudes and the first word you speak to others. Helps you be perceived as a positive, can-do person. Tip = when someone approaches and interrupts you internally smile and think “yes”. The internal “yes” changes our thought patterns, attitudes, ‘tell’ facial expressions and posture. It’s an old sales technique - never respond with a ‘no’. Instead if something is asked of you say something like “Let’s discuss what I can do” or “Yes, I would love to do that. Here’s what I can do”.

You can gradually do things like developing new skills or expanding your network.

Each stage of a career-early, mid-career, and retirement bring unique problems and issues that are addressed specifically by career consultant Beverly Jones. Jones is an attorney, an executive coach, an author, a blogger and a podcaster. She works with people at all stages of their careers to help them traverse the ever-changing landscapes of the workplace. Beverly is the author of the book Think Like an Entrepreneur Act Like a CEO – 50 Indispensable Tips to Help you Stay Afloat, Bounce Back and Get Ahead at Work and she hosts the podcast Jazzed About Work, available through Apple Podcasts, Google Play and on the NPR Podcast Directory. Often she advises millennials just entering the workplace about when it’s time to move from one job to the next and how not to sacrifice a private life for a career. She also gives tips on networking – what it is and what it should never be. For those in the mid-career doldrums, she suggests that they find a new challenge either in private life or on-the-job…something new to learn and master. She suggests that development of new skills will not only make life more rewarding but it often can boost a career at the same time. She also spends a significant amount of her professional time advising new retirees. Often they are looking for new challenges or new careers and Beverly guides them through various exercises to allow them the freedom to try new things and to challenge themselves even at an advanced age. She is a strong proponent of that there should be “fun” in every day of life and new challenges often produce that element of fun.
