Jake Thompson (he/him) is a TV writer, comedian and actor. When he isn't contributing his writing and humor for CBS All Access’ The Harper House, he's creating parodies—most notably his popular HBO series collaboration Big Little Parodies and Jake's Fashion Week. His credits include RuPaul's Drag Race, Ugly Betty, Good Mythical Morning and The Big C. His latest project Apricot (co-creator) was selected for 2020's Slamdance, Outfest, Inside Out Film Festival and Nashville's Film Festival. It's his personal mission to illuminate the Asian-American experience on screen. Jake joins me this week to discuss SEASON 1, EPISODE 10: NIGHTMARES I was thrilled to meet Jake, a new fellow Asian-American friend who actually got me to open up about my own experiences growing up as a Korean-American. The hour flew by as we chatted about the actual nightmare that is 2020, how Filipino folks are more than just ‘the life of the party’ or ‘good at BBQ’, and how decolonizing our minds can include continuing to love Kirsten Dunst. I was also thrilled to see Jake rock an *a m a z i n g* Euphoria-inspired look for Scoobies of Color’s very first *intentional* video interview! I am so excited to start a video interview series - starting here in Los Angeles and hopefully other cities as we are safely able to do so. A few weeks back, the gracious @sakarisingh joined me for a video chat as a result of a tech hiccup. Not only did she make that interview a complete blast, she introduced me to Jake - who might look very familiar to those of us who love the Scoobies of Color logo. This interview felt so full circle, and I’m so, so very grateful to be spending my weeks talking to the most beautifully interesting folks around! Our video conversation can be found at www.patreon.com/scoobiesofcolorthepod. The pod ep can be found wherever you catch your pods. Please don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE LIKE & SHARE to support each episode!

As the 2017 Inside Out Film Festival draws nearer, we continue our celebration of LGBT cinema with Jennie Livingston's Paris is Burning. Currently streaming on Netflix, Livingston's critically acclaimed 1990 documentary focuses on the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City's drag balls. Touching on themes of racism, poverty, body image and family, Livingston constructs a vibrant film that is both thought-provoking and entertaining. We also take a moment to discuss our short film picks: Paul Frankl's Roxanne and Hope Dickson Leach's Silly Girl. 5:38 Roxanne 11:25 Silly Girl 18:45 Paris Is Burning
How does a teenager come to terms with her sexual identity in an environment that refuses to acknowledge who she really is? This is the predicament that 17-year-old Alike finds herself in as she tries to navigate an overbearing mother, a father in denial and her own quest to find a relationship. We celebrate LGBT cinema, and the upcoming Inside Out Film Festival, by focusing on Dee Rees' wonderful film Pariah. Before we dive into that film, we kick things off by discussing our short film picks: Dan's Taberski's These C*cksucking Tears and Alex Bohs' Half.
