Zac and Jay sit down with Dave Manheim – creator of Dopey, the darkly hilarious and deeply moving podcast about “drugs, addiction, and dumb sh*t,” or as he now calls it, “the dark comedy of drug addiction.” What began as two friends swapping war stories has grown into a full-blown cultural force, with a diehard community, celebrity guests, and an archive of the funniest, most heartbreaking, and most brutally honest stories in the recovery world.Dave talks about launching Dopey just four months into sobriety with his late co-host Chris, the tragedy that reshaped the show, and why humor – especially the twisted kind – is a lifeline. He opens up about chasing guests like Marc Maron, Boy George, and Jason Biggs (and getting ghosted), his complicated feelings about being called “Dopey Dave,” and how working at Katz's Deli taught him more about recovery than any rehab ever did. They get into podcast beefs, the sad reality of grief that often shadows recovery, the great weed debate, and what happens when someone who never set out to “help people” accidentally does just that – over and over again. Dave's smart, incredibly earnest and very, very funny. If you've ever been told “once a junkie, always a junkie,” if you've experienced unexpected loss in recovery, or if you believe this addiction stuff is heavy enough and that humor is an essential ingredient in getting through it – please give this episode a watch or listen.Link to Dave's podcast: Dopey: On the Dark Comedy of Drug AddictionConnect with Zachttps://www.instagram.com/zwclark/https://www.linkedin.com/in/zac-c-746b96254/https://www.tiktok.com/@zacwclarkhttps://www.strava.com/athletes/55697553https://twitter.com/zacwclarkIf you or anyone you know is struggling, please do not hesitate to contact Release:(914) 588-6564releaserecovery.com@releaserecovery

“When you're scared all the time, you reach a point when you wish you were dead.”Talking About Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine with our guest, Production Designer Liz BischofProduction designer Liz Bischof joins Movies We Like to discuss Sonatine, Beat Takeshi's 1993 meditative yakuza film that masterfully blends moments of shocking violence with poetic contemplation. As a special guest who has worked on projects ranging from Broadway's Aladdin to Apple TV+'s See, Bischof brings unique insights into the film's visual language and thoughtful approach to production design. In our wide-ranging conversation, Bischof shares her journey from props maker for international opera companies to production designer for film and television. She discusses her recent work on A Nice Indian Boy and upcoming thriller Getaway starring Jason Biggs in his directorial debut, before diving deep into why Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine left such a lasting impression on her when she first saw it at the Rotterdam Film Festival. The film's minimalist aesthetic, strategic use of color (particularly in the red and blue motifs), and carefully composed shots that often feel like still life paintings exemplify what draws her to this unique take on the yakuza genre. The discussion explores how Kitano, primarily known as a comedian in Japan at the time, crafted this deliberately paced crime drama about a tired gangster (played by Kitano himself) sent to Okinawa. The film's remarkable middle section, where the characters retreat to a beach and briefly recapture moments of childhood play, provides a stark contrast to the inevitable violence that bookends the story. Bischof particularly appreciates how the film's production design reinforces themes through its use of gritty, fluorescent-lit spaces in the city scenes versus the poetic beauty of the beach sequences.Sonatine remains a masterpiece of 90s Japanese cinema that rewards patient viewers with its unique blend of violence, humor, and existential meditation. Our conversation with Liz Bischof illuminates how the film's thoughtful design choices and visual poetry continue to influence and inspire filmmakers and designers nearly 30 years after its release.Film SundriesWatch this episode on YouTube!Find Liz on her website, her Instagram, or on IMDbWatch this on Apple or Amazon, or find other places at LetterboxdTheatrical trailer Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. A new year. A new us.Well, not really. It's the same show basically, just a little older and tired. We're the podcast equivalent of just wanting to go to your bed and having a lie-down. Kinda like the old saps in this fourth (and final) mainline installment of the AMERICAN PIE film series (we're not counting all the straight-to-DVD films either). This is AMERICAN REUNION! And we're back with this bunch of reprobates as they've hit full adulthood and struggling with the woes that come with that. Again, this is another excuse to see what nonsense Jim finds himself brutalizing his member over. It's hilarious.Weren't the 90's awesome?
On this week's episode the guys welcome Ashley as they dive into the movie "Saving Silverman" Ashley doesn't think this movie makes any sense and Jacob and Brad talk about all the crimes that were committed in this movie. David Henry Hwang's sharp, purposeful, yet very playful “unreliable” memoir is serious satirical fun performed by a full cast. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss this story of a white actor being cast as a lead in a play that strongly protests casting white actors in Asian American roles. David Henry Hwang, portrayed by a droll Daniel Dae Kim, has a hard decision to make: Come clean or cover it up. As this production unfolds fast-paced scenes of phone calls, monologues, memories, and kitchen-table conversations, it takes on the serious subjects of cultural appropriation, artistic freedom, and flat-out discrimination. Today I'm joined by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo, Reed Northrup, and Siena Agudong, the cast of the 4:30 Movie In the 4:30 Movie, writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager (Ken Jeong) and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans. Justin Long, Rosario Dawson, Jason Biggs, and more contribute outrageous characters to this poignant comic valentine to moviegoing and the youth of the '80s. The film will be in theatres this Friday 9/16!!! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support
Anything Else is the 33rd film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 2003. Jason Biggs stars as Jerry Falk, a young comedy writer in New York, who has to sort out his life. He's in a relationship with Cristina Ricci's Amanda that's going off the rails and a terrible manager played by Danny DeVito. But a friendship with an older writer, Woody Allen's David Dobel, could provide a way out, but he's also a psychopath. Anything Else was Allen giving people what they thought they wanted from him – a sprawling romantic comedy with some deeper meaning. But it was a box office flop, and that failure overshadows how this film was Allen's most deeply personal in over a decade. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages podcast. This week, we look at 2003's Anything Else. How it was conceived, how it just wasn't what people wanted. Spoilers are everywhere – so watch the film and then come back.
