From law school to soft pretzels, Maria Chau's journey is anything but ordinary. As co-founder of Zwick's Pretzels, she's spent the last eight years coaxing an unexpected pretzel phenomenon into a thriving, if unpredictable, business. In this episode, Maria shares how an existential crisis, a taco bar, and a willingness to follow curiosity led her down an entirely new path. She talks about scaling chaos into structure, learning resilience through fire, and finding joy in the dance between uncertainty and purpose. Equal parts introspective and funny, this is a story about life's delicious detours — and how sometimes the best plan really is having no Plan B.Guest:Zwick's Pretzels l: Instagram Host:Mark Kondrat: Instagram | LinkedIn CREATE - The Podcast: Instagram | TikTok | Website

So often, I hear from founders who feel frustrated that their products just aren't selling the way they'd hoped, even though they know the product itself is great. And more often than not, the missing piece isn't the product at all, it's the content of the visuals. Because visuals are more than “pretty pictures.” The right content tells a story, shows your product in context, and makes it easy for your customer to imagine themselves using it. That's what builds trust and gets someone to click “add to cart.” To explore this, I sat down with stylist and creative director Sandra Chau. Sandra began her career as a lawyer, then moved into the wedding industry, and eventually found her true calling in brand styling. Today, she's based in Sydney and works with e-commerce brands across the world, from luxury bedding to minimalist swimwear, helping them create visuals with intention, clarity and selling power. In this episode, Sandra and I chat about: Why the content of your visuals matters more than the aesthetic alone How lifestyle-driven imagery helps your customer connect and feel confident to buy The mistakes founders often make with product photography, and how to fix them What brands like Nimble Activewear and DISSH are doing right with their visuals Simple, practical ways to start creating content-rich imagery that resonates with your audience and converts Sandra's approach is about clarity, not complication. You don't need a huge budget or endless photoshoots. You need visuals with a clear story, created intentionally for your customer, so they do the heavy lifting in your marketing. If you've ever felt like your photos “look nice” but don't seem to move the needle, this episode will show you how to rethink your visuals as strategic content that actually sells. ✨ Want more clarity on scaling your brand sustainably? What if your brain's "operating system" is running on outdated software? In this transformative episode of Productivity Smarts, host Gerald J. Leonard sits down with Agnes Chau—award-winning transformational coach, aerospace engineer, and founder of the nonprofit Empowered Heart—to explore how neuroscience, subconscious reprogramming, and heart-mind alignment can unlock unparalleled productivity and fulfillment. From sound healing with gamma waves (backed by MIT research on Alzheimer's prevention) to muscle testing and Psych-K techniques, Agnes reveals actionable strategies to bridge the gap between conscious goals and subconscious blocks. Discover why 95% of behaviors are subconscious, how to "cancel" limiting beliefs in real time, and why stress relief isn't just self-care—it's a non-negotiable for peak performance. Packed with metaphors (think "Dead Sea vs. Mediterranean" for energy flow) and Gerald's personal vertigo comeback story, this episode is a masterclass in rewiring your mind, elevating resilience, and leading a life of purpose. Let's get into it! What We Discuss [00:00] Introduction to Agnes [07:26] The importance of understanding subconscious behaviors and beliefs [08:28] The role of the subconscious [11:31] Upgrading the human operating system [18:28] The importance of achieving inner peace for positive life changes [21:04] The size of conscious vs. subconscious [22:22] Team alignment: football analogy [23:24] Heart and brain coherence [26:57] Practical application of alignment [30:06] The Empowered Heart nonprofit organization [35:04] Stress impacts on physical and mental health [41:20] The Dead Sea vs. Mediterranean Sea analogy [45:08] Closing remarks Notable Quotes [10:42] "The subconscious is like that high speed train, whereas your conscious mind is like riding a bicycle. Well, if that high speed train is pointed in the wrong direction, you may get there faster." — Agnes Chau [11:49] "To upgrade your human operating system, you can tap into the powerhouse which is your brain, and align it with your divine heart, which is your intuition, your higher self, the holy spirit within the superconscious, and also tapping into and harmonizing the heart, the mind, and the body intelligence to create that life that you want." — Agnes Chau [32:26] "I'm not proposing that it's just all positive thinking. I'm proposing balanced thinking. And the challenge is that we have too much negativity and that's why there's this whole push towards more positivity to balance ourselves out. But at the end of the day, what you want is accurate thinking." — Agnes Chau [35:27] "If we're not constantly rinsing and washing out our brain with positivity through meditation and taking care of ourselves, then over time, stress will create a physical issue." — Gerald J. Leonard [39:25] "The importance of learning is about neuroplasticity. And it's always important to learn something new, whether it's physical or mental." — Agnes Chau Resources Agnes Chau Empowered Heart Website: https://www.empowered-heart.org/about-5 Website: https://www.agneschau.com/agnes-background LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/agnes-chau-llc Productivity Smarts Podcast Website - productivitysmartspodcast.com Gerald J. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Brian Chau, who writes at the From the New World Substack. A graduate of the University of Waterloo and former software engineer with a background in pure mathematics, today Chau is executive director of the Alliance for the Future, a think tank that believes artificial intelligence will transform our world for the better. Chau addresses the great “doomer vs. anti-doomer” debate, and argues for an anti-catastrosophist position. He also makes the case that increasing scaling has started to hit diminishing returns, and the expectation that artificial intelligence will continue to gain power purely through throwing more resources at the same problems. Then, they discuss the revolutionary impact of the recent advances DeepSeek has made in China (an issue he addresses on his Substack). Chau breaks down the technological nuts and bolts, as well as geopolitical and economic consequences.
Jeff and Phil welcome showrunner/producer Echo Wu and writer Jade Chang, key creatives behind the Netflix animated series Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld, starring Ali Wong. They talk about creating a uniquely Asian American young adult action/horror/supernatural family drama; melding Asian mythology and folklore with contemporary youth culture (complete with a playlist) to tell a multi-layered story; and how to keep your cool (and failing miserably) while working with a K-pop idol. Also: The Good, The Bad, and The WTF of making Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld.
For a writer who both illustrates and creates the story for a book, which comes first? We ask writer/illustrator Alina Chau who created "Marshmallow & Jordan."
