How many days of the week do you dread going to the closet to pick out clothes to wear? Or maybe you --- like so many other people around the world during pandemic -- have given up on getting dressed at all. Often--when we are weight challenged-- we have many sizes of clothes in our closet. The smaller sizes taunting us, making us feel bad for not being disciplined enough to wear them. The larger ones mock us even more because they often seem uninspired, drab and frumpy– not who we really want to be or look like. So how can we shift into a new way of Thin Thinking about how we dress ourselves and give ourselves the permission to look good no matter what size we are wearing? Today on the Thin Thinking podcast, we are going to explore with my guest expert fashion consultant Ginger Burr on how to get excited about dressing ourselves and expressing who we are with self respect, style, and lots of love, no matter what size we are. Jorge and I really start to get into the psychology of leadership, clothing and how life is affecting us.
Dress codes are as old as clothing itself. For centuries, clothing has been a wearable status symbol; fashion, a weapon in struggles for social change; and dress codes, a way to maintain political control. Dress codes evolved along with the social and political ideals of the day, but they always reflected struggles for power and status. In the 1700s, South Carolina's “Negro Act” made it illegal for Black people to dress “above their condition.” In the 1920s, the bobbed hair and form-fitting dresses worn by free-spirited flappers were banned in workplaces throughout the United States. Even in today's more informal world, dress codes still determine what we wear, when we wear it—and what our clothing means. People lose their jobs for wearing braided hair, long fingernails, large earrings, beards, and tattoos or refusing to wear a suit and tie or make-up and high heels. In some cities, wearing sagging pants is a crime. In Dress Codes: How the Laws of Fashion Made History (Simon & Schuster, 2021), law professor and cultural critic Dr. Richard Thompson Ford presents a history of the laws of fashion from the middle ages to the present day, a walk down history's red carpet to uncover and examine the canons, mores, and customs of clothing—rules that we often take for granted. After reading Dress Codes, you'll never think of fashion as superficial again—and getting dressed will never be the same. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Vinny and Jess are back on the Hot Mess Teacher Express is back in the station to talk dress code drama. We start things off with Hot Takes on former teachers giving professional development seminars at schools. You might be surprised what we have to say. In Hot or Not, Vinny finds teacher drama to be on the border of Hot and Not. As long as we aren't involved, teacher drama is very entertaining. One thing we know for sure is that Teacher besties to share the drama with is VERY hot! US vs. UK is back to take on dress codes in schools, and Jess firmly believes she has this one in the bag for the land of the free, but Vinny has some great points about what a good pair of slacks and blazers can do for students and staff. But what really Grinds our Gears are people that immediately stand when the pane lands and folks the post negative comments on social content. To close the show we highlight some the most undervalued Underdogs in Education, teachers who have second jobs. Now THAT is hustle! All aboard the Hot Mess Teacher Express! Choo! A Canadian school board has demanded a new “professional” dress code for teachers following months of backlash over a trans teacher with “clownish” giant prosthetic breasts.Trustees on the Halton District School Board unanimously passed a motion on Jan. 3 ordering the director of education to develop a policy to ensure “appropriate and professional standards of dress and decorum in the classroom,” Fox News reported. The district's Director of Education Curtis Ennis will have until March 1 to create the policy.“The HDSB's commitment to human rights remains rooted in our core values and commitment to each and every student and staff who identifies as a member of an underserved and underrepresented group, and our approach is informed by opinions from leading employment law firms with human rights and equity advisors,” Ennis said.“This commitment and approach will continue to be applied as the HDSB looks to fulfill this motion.”Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople
Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real FIRE talk! Stoves are apparently a hot button (lol) issue, and President Biden continues coming under scrutiny for his classified documents faux pas. Do we believe everything we read in memoirs? Some details in Prince Harry's memoir "Spare" have been determined to be inaccurate. Since human memory is subject to flaws when recalling events, how much stock can we put in any memoir's ability to represent reality? Time to get nerdy: Pam and Laura cover an ongoing story in the Dungeons & Dragons community. Once again, corporations are getting greedy and attempting to screw over their fan base. Swift backlash from the DnD community led to Wizards of the Coast backtracking its new proposed Open Gaming License (OGL), but fans are still wary of what is to come. The Missouri State House of Representatives has adopted stricter dress code guidelines for its female members. Apparently bare arms and shoulders are too scandalous for Missouri. The United States House of Representatives relaxed its own archaic rules around dress code for women in 2017 - c'mon Missouri, even Paul Ryan thought this was stupid. We reminisce about our own run ins with being dress code violators and check in on our old high schools' current dress code requirements. This week we have a group recommendation: Watch 'The Last of Us' on HBOMax. Just do it. Do it now. (We also have a bonus recommendation for the inevitable zombie apocalypse: PB2 powdered peanut butter!) And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: MuggleSuck, The AIM Files (part III). Between being homeschooled and lacking IRL friends, Andrew and Laura really had nothing better to do than be riled up by fansite drama. How did we talk about and perceive being gay in the early 2000s? How does it differ from 2023 standards?
