An actor is very fortunate to have a multi-season run on a series. An actor is even more fortunate to get to see a series through to its natural conclusion. Lauren Cohan went above and beyond that with her Walking Dead journey. Not only did she play Maggie in over 100 episodes of the main series, but then she got to go on to headline a spin-off series opposite Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and that spin-off series earned her her very first executive producing credit and now her very first directing credit as well. She's a key component of one of the biggest television empires ever created, and she's making the most of the opportunities that franchise affords her - opportunities she's earned. The Walking Dead: Dead City picks up a number of years after the events of the main series. When Hershel (Logan Kim) is kidnapped by the Croat (Željko Ivanek) and taken to Manhattan, Maggie must turn to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for help. While Maggie does manage to make it off the island with Hershel, Negan is pressured to remain by The Dama (Lisa Emery). Season 2 kicks off about a year later with the New Babylon Federation conscripting the residents of The Bricks to head into Manhattan for an expeditionary mission tied to their agenda to ultimately retake it. Maggie agrees to go, but only if no one else from her community is forced to do the same. So back to Manhattan she goes, along with a stubborn Ginny (Mahina Napoleon) and a stowaway Hershel. After powering through five episodes of Season 2 as an executive producer and playing Maggie trying to survive yet another perilous mission in the Big Apple, the time has some for Cohan to put on yet another hat. With the release of Season 2, Episode 6, “Bridge Partners Are Hard to Come by These Days,” she is officially a director. In celebration of the milestone achievement, Cohan joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to discuss her early days on The Walking Dead, her experience advocating for herself when her initial series regular contract concluded, how she approached stepping into the executive producer role with Dead City, and how she felt about taking on an extremely ambitious episode for her very first venture as a director. The John Ajvide Lindqvist novel, Let the Right One In, already has one downright phenomenal big screen adaptation and a rock solid American remake. Is it really possible for the source material to go three for three on screen? Five episodes into Showtime's Let the Right One In series, it looks that way.The show has a number of key characters to track. Most closely associated with the original story is Ian Foreman's Isaiah and Madison Taylor Baez's Eleanor. Isaiah's a young kid who struggles to make friends and often finds himself face-to-face with bullies. However, hope comes in the form of a new neighbor, Eleanor, a girl who appears to be about the same age. But, little does Isaiah know, Eleanor is actually a vampire and her father (Demián Bichir) spends much of his time figuring out how to feed her.Meanwhile, we've got Grace Gummer's character Claire, a brilliant scientist building a promising career who's forced to choose between that current work and her family when her estranged and ailing father calls with a very unusual request. Arthur Logan (Željko Ivanek) wants Claire to continue his search for a cure for her brother (Jacob Buster) who has also been turned into a vampire. With Let the Right One In well into its Season 1 run, Gummer took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to revisit the path she took to make her way to the new show. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Conrad shows Dan the little-seen supernatural psychological drama, The Sender (1982) – a British production starring Kathryn Harrold, Željko Ivanek, Shirley Knight and Paul 'Belloq' Freeman, and directed by Oscar-winning production designer Roger Christian. Ivanek plays John Doe 83, a mysterious young man admitted to a psychiatric hospital after walking into the sea with rocks in his pockets. Suffering from amnesia, but obviously the victim of some trauma, Doe fascinates Dr Gail Farmer (Harrold), who discovers the boy is able to project his nightmares into other people's minds. Who is he? Who is the mysterious woman who keeps appearing randomly and claiming to be his mother? And is this film obscure for a good reason? Find out! The 2018 Oscars may be this weekend, but ATNW's 2017 miniseries rolls on with the crime drama (comedy?) with the long title. In this disassembled-reassembled episode, Jenny's English major side comes out, and Mike tries to figure out why they never quite succeed at discussing the first half of a movie. Plus Law and Order, Ivanek chat, acting wins, VENGEANCE, life advice for Dixon, the mysteries of Anne, and more. Follow us on Twitter @nomineespod!
Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective
We discuss Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri on the show this week. Spoilers in the discussion, like always, but I especially recommend seeing the film before listening to this episode as we get into the minutia of some of the events without a ton of context. Either way, it's a good movie and a great discussion. If you miss this one, it'll be counter-productive to the entire operation. Show notes and more: http://www.actualanarchy.com/83 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)
Kevin Werner rejoins the podcast as a special Missouri correspondent to debate Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with Devin and Mark.
Zeljko Ivanek is one of those actors who, in character, could have made tough guy actors Lee Marvin or Robert Mitchum cry real tears. He almost always plays a hardass, SOB, an unsympathetic ballbuster. And he’s really, really good at it. He was that guy on “Homicide: Life on the Street.” And again on “Oz.” And pretty much everywhere else. And that’s the thing: Ivanek sometimes seems like he’s on every drama on TV. And maybe he is.
In this week's Screen Verdict podcast Matt and Jonathan review the film Argo. After once again arguing about eating cookies on the podcast they discuss the renaissance era of Ben Affleck. They then introduce the premise of the film and the large variety of guest stars, including a surprising amount of actors from Damages. Out of these they each pick their MVP for the film. Moving on to politics Jonathan shares his reaction to the events in the film and Matt tells how he actually met the former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter. In our weekly segment What Has (Argo) Taught Us, Matt learns who is unexpectedly good at puzzles and Jonathan is introduced to a certain drinking etiquette. Lastly they provide their Screen Verdict rating for the film and in Housekeeping both Matt and Jonathan offer apologies for mistakes in previous podcasts. Also in future news, Screen Verdict will be hosting a live web show during the Presidential Election results.
