Send us a textIn this episode, I chat with Lucy Caldwell about contemporary Irish literature's vibrant yet complex landscape, her latest novel, These Days, and profound philosophical insights. Growing up in Belfast during the Troubles in a "mixed marriage" family—Protestant father, Catholic mother—Caldwell developed a unique perspective that informs her award-winning writing. Lucy describes writing during the pandemic and experiencing "a portal between worlds" as she researched the Blitz while living through COVID lockdowns. Lucy Caldwell was born in Belfast in 1981. She is the author of three previous novels, several stage plays and radio dramas, and three collections of short stories. She won the BBC National Short Story Award in 2021 for “All the People Were Mean and Bad.” Other awards include the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the George Devine Award, the Dylan Thomas Prize, and a Major Individual Artist Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018, and in 2019, she was the editor of Being Various: New Irish Short Stories. In 2022, she was the recipient of the EM Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters for her body of work to date.Lucy CaldwellThese Days, Lucy CaldwellJan Carson, AuthorGlenn PatersonWendy Erskine, AuthorKerry Dougherty, AuthorSupport the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

In this week's episode of On The Line, Jen Gerson speaks with Adam Sadinsky, a refugee lawyer and member of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers about the Safe Third Country Agreement — and why lawyers like him think it needs to be radically altered in the Donald Trump era. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by the Forest Products Association of Canada. Canadian forestry supports 200,000 workers, generates $87 billion in annual revenue, and provides the products we need to build homes and drive economic growth. While trade barriers from the United States threaten jobs and investment, Canada's own approval processes and regulations are blocking critical projects that increase our self reliance. The Canadian government has a clear opportunity to stand up for Canadian forestry at a time of growing global uncertainty. We need real action that puts Canadians first — supporting employees and their families, securing stability for our businesses, and protecting the long-term potential of our sector and its people. To learn more, visit https://www.forestryforthefuture.ca/They discuss how the agreement was established, its impact on refugee claims, and the differences in how Canada and the U.S. handle asylum seekers. The conversation also touches on recent changes in U.S. immigration policy under the Trump administration and how these changes affect Canada's responsibilities towards refugees. This episode is also brought to you by the Métis Nation of Ontario. In 1967, government officials ordered a Métis village on Agawa Bay to move to clear room a provincial park. For generations, Métis families had lived along the shores of Lake Superior. Suddenly, they were forced to pack their belongings, and then, the government officials burned their homes. These Métis families, already pushed off their River Lots in Sault Ste. Marie generations earlier, had no choice but to leave. But they did not disappear. The Métis of Agawa Bay lost their homes, but never their identity. For more, go to https://www.ontariometisfacts.com/, and check out the brand-new song here https://youtu.be/uhsILAMMi2U?si=jicYoUpoH7LHbZ8F about this story by Métis singer-songwriter Amanda Rheaume “One of These Days.” Adam Sadinsky recaps the complexities of the Safe Third Country Agreement and its implications for asylum seekers in Canada. He highlights the challenges faced by refugees, the capacity limits of the Canadian refugee system, and the political dynamics surrounding immigration policy. The discussion also touches on legal challenges to the agreement and the need for reforms to better accommodate those seeking refuge in Canada. As always, like and subscribe. And we'll see you next week for the next installment of On The Line.
After songs like “Mirage” and “Dirty Dancer” saw huge streaming numbers, Orion Sun landed herself on countless “artists to watch” lists, and her debut was one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2024. The 14-song collection exceeded expectations and garnered the LA-based R&B artist fans across the globe. With her sensual delivery of vulnerable topics like heartbreak and self-discovery, Orion's modern take on the genre draws likeness from contemporaries like Frank Ocean and SZA.Watch Orion Sun perform “Already Gone” and “These Days” live at WNXP's Sonic Cathedral here.
Rachael brings back her (made-up!) translations of the Bible - the Trigger Fest Version (TFV) and the Transformational Wisdom Version (TWV) - to name toxic interpretations of Psalm 37 and then, as a community, to seek within it ancient wisdom to help us to live wisely and lovingly in these troubling days. Wives and Mothers Need Respect and Support Today More Than Ever in These Days of Stress and Uncertainty MESSAGE SUMMARY: Wives and mothers need respect and support today more than ever in these days of stress and uncertainty, derivative of Covid-19 and cultural dissonance along with inconsistences in our social, educational, health, work, and our faith-based support systems. We are told, in the Wisdom of Proverbs 31:10-12, that: “An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.". Paul says, in 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, that: “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.". Ep. 146 - Stephen Zeigler (These Days Gallery)Stephen Zeigler is the co-founder of the Downtown Los Angeles-based art gallery “These Days”. We provide a timeline of his life, from his childhood in Manhattan Beach to a firsthand glimpse into the first wave of Los Angeles punk, and then into a lengthy career in photography with all its triumphs and tribulations. His journey eventually led him and his wife (and co-founder) Jodi Zeigler to find a building in Downtown Los Angeles that initially served as their studio for the first couple of years and later became “These Days”.Further topics we discuss include touring with AFI on their first national tour, the many lives of the building at 118 Winston St. (These Days), making a living through photography, sincerity and honesty in the art world, and more.
For such a bunch of old guys, The Flood has always had a rather rad technology division. Back in 2008, for instance, the notion of podcasting was only a few years old when the band started its own online broadcasts. Today, nearly 750 episodes later, the podcast is still going strong, with a new installment each week. That same year, when YouTube was but three years old, The Flood's first digital video was posted, now having been viewed by nearly 10,000 folks around the world. Since then, with band manager Pamela Bowen operating the camera, the band has made and shared hundreds of videos.Enter A.I.So, it should be no surprise that the next tech the lads have tackled is artificial intelligence. Attentive Flood Watch readers have remarked on how the newsletter has suddenly stepped up its game when it comes to illustrating its articles. Imaginative graphics abound:That's because starting last spring, the newsletter began regularly turning to ImageFX — a free online Google AI image generator tool — to create a variety of illustrations in a variety of styles for songs and for videos: These Days “These Days”To show it off, the platform was used this weekend to generate graphics to enrich Pamela's latest video, the band's rendering of Jackson Browne's lovely “These Days” at a recent rehearsal.Responding to prompts for “a moody painting of a man walking wet, deserted city streets,” ImageFx poured out a stream of poignant illustrations for the film. We're officially in the throes of SEASON 5!!! And you know that means that it's time to talk about another Pink Floyd album in our series going backwards through their discography. Last time we left our heroes, they were throwing together an album that was for a movie, but also wasn't? (i don't remember that feels like a lifetime ago). However, before that, they had achieved what would become their signature sound, with the long-crafted compilation of various "nothings" they had left on the cutting room floor throughout the years. That achievement was called "Echoes" and it takes up the entire B side of Pink Floyd's 4th (or 5th) record, "Meddle". Side A also has some songs that would become Floyd classics, such as "Fearless" and "One of These Days". It's underrated by the casual rock fan, and overrated by Floyd purists. Either way, it's a magical and important piece to the Pink Floyd journey. EDITOR'S NOTE: Brad was incorrect when he said they didn't perform the whole "Echoes" suite live in Pompeii. He was just looking at a shorter version of it on YouTube, like a chump. Joel Plaskett's eleventh album—One Real Reveal is special for several reasons. Joel sat down with a small Telefunken KM56 microphone and a 4-track recorder and recorded the tracks for One Real Reveal ON CASSETTE TAPE starting with the brilliant High Summer. This album and its music is bare. Because it is, you're forced to listen to the music and especially the lyrics. These are words and melodies that will still be the air in a concert hall. IF you can get in. Joel's current tour out west is Sold Out. Fittingly, the tour ends at Massey Hall in Toronto. It too will be Sold Out. Discover the new sounds of Joel Plaskett, just like the old Joel Plaskett only quieter, more reflective. I've been waiting many years to have Joel to myself. Just to exchange ideas and passions. My timing couldn't have been better. One Real Reveal was well worth the wait. The other welcome guest is our pal Leeroy Stagger. Host of Dirty Windshields Radio Hour on CKUA Saturdays. But before Leeroy joined us, he was a highly respected singer/songwriter and he continues to write, record and perform his very personal songs. Leeroy has just released his latest album 3 am Revelations. In it, Leeroy reflects the life around him. The road, family, social issues and seeking the answers to all his inner questions. Just a heads up – 3 am Revelations rocks. Bangers like Watermelon Pink, Count to 10, These Days. Then finds balance with reflective gems like It's gonna be alright (someday), Alberta Stars, Life's a Drag, etc. It's good to have friends and partners like Leeroy Stagger. Great album Leeroy! You nailed it.
AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection. Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again. For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date. Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album's rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs' powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches. Every so often, a conversation tilts the axis of your day—this chat with Cris Jacobs about his new album, 'One of These Days,' is one of those rare gems. On the cusp of its release, Cris unfolds the narrative of this deeply personal project, from tapping into the raw emotions of the pandemic to rekindling his bluegrass heritage. It's a tale woven with the threads of collaboration, as talents like Billy Strings and LeAnn Womack lend their voices, enriching the tapestry of sound that Cris and the Infamous Stringdusters bring to life in the studio. Their collective energy pulses through the stories shared, a heartbeat that underscores the transformative nature of music in both the creator's and listener's life. What happens when the comforting clasp of guitar strings leads to healing? As Cris recounts, the gentle nudge from Jerry Douglas to embrace his bluegrass roots became a gateway to therapeutic discovery and unveiling the art of album-making—sans written songs. It's a space where mental health walks hand-in-hand with melodic expression, where authenticity isn't just a buzzword but the core of Cris' musical rejuvenation. The intimate interplay of fatherhood and the music industry's rigors also gets its due, offering a glimpse into the balancing act that shapes an artist's world. Ending on an anticipatory note, we ponder Cris' upcoming plans, from his involvement in the enchanting Sojourn in Porto with the great Matt Butler to the excitement of sharing 'One of These Days' with eager ears. The chat becomes a reflection pool of support and camaraderie within the music community, a reminder of how it sustains us in the ebbs and flows of life. This episode, laden with laughter, revelations, and the warmth of familial interruptions, invites you to witness the joy that springs from the heart of making music. Welcome back to Ask Uncut where we answer your deep and dark dilemmas! The first dilemma of the day is that Marlie Mae (Laura's 4 year old) has been watching Taylor Swift 'The Eras Tour' and she's learnt some questionable dance moves... We have an ask uncut aftermath from a question last week!! We absolutely love finding out what happened next. Vibes for the week: Britt: pretty lazy magic wand hair perfector Keeshia: The Mel Robbins Podcast with Dr. Jen Gunter MD How to Balance Your Hormones: What Your Doctor Isn't Telling You About Menopause Laura: Mimi's haircare for kids Then we jump into your questions: GRANDPARENTS WANT WEIRD TITLES THAT WE HATEMy husband and I have a problem, we are 5 months pregnant with our first child and my in-laws have been thinking about what they want to be called. Now, I'm happy for it not to be the typical grandma and grandpa etc if they don't want but they have just called my husband to let him know that my MIL wants to be called cougey and my FIL has picked Ockey. (I don't know how they would be spelt but they sound like koo ghee and ock ee.) We don't like these names and think they are weird, and could be confusing for our baby when she grows up. We don't want to hurt their feelings but we also don't want to have to refer to them as these strange names forever. How can we approach this with them or is it something they have every right to choose on what to be called by our child? DO I PRETEND IT'S GREAT?If a partner plans something for an event such as birthday, Mother's Day, etc and you are disappointed, do you pretend it's great? Or let them know you're disappointed? A couple of times I've expected a bit more planning from my partner and been disappointed but felt guilty for feeling this way. Are my expectations too high and is anything better than nothing? I should mention I've told him that I'm a sentimental person when it comes to milestones DO I CALL BULLSHIT OR IS THIS ‘NORMAL' THESE DAYS? I've been dating a guy for 6 months (after his marriage of 2 years ago and 2 kids ended). Due to this I've given him space in anything too heavy about committing etc. About a month ago I asked him if he was on the apps and he said no, we haven't had anymore “exclusive” chats. I've found out this week that he has liked one of my best mates pictures on hinge (who he's met). He says it was an accident & he went on there because he was bored. Do I call bullshit on this? My male friend says that blokes need validation and until you tell them your boundaries and commit, it's fair game. He wants to talk it through and get on the same page but I am unsure if I want to bother. I have been single for 10 years and had hopes for this. He has all the qualities that I'm looking for but he seems emotionally immature. He hasn't told me his feelings for me yet but he clearly likes me. We've waited five years for noted singer songwriter Cris Jacobs to release new music. Fortunately his latest effort “One of These Days” is now available wherever you buy and listen to music and it's one of my favourites of the year so far. Well, this was ill-advised, I now think to myself... and now you've got a big ol' buffet to keep going back to for as many trips as you'd like, and I don't know how many of you were expecting Jell-O as well as sushi after your fried green beans. But, whether you listen to it all in sequence or segments, I hope it's valuable to you! Here's a few things you will hear about during the ride: Contraptions used to make Pink Floyd songs like "One of These Days" happen and how they were calibrated The definition of scenery gorn and other tropes found in the film The Bear's emotional relationship with the Wall of Sound, which becomes everyone's relationship with it as well, because The Dead could not perform the same way on everyone else's rinky dink P.A. systems after experiencing the clarity they were used to Pink Floyd's year-long scheme to move from Capitol to CBS in America Hendrix blowing off the Dead on the night he promised to jam, and their low key "revenge" Antonioni's opinions on filmmaking in America vs Italy. What it was like to film Z.P. through the eyes of an American member of the crew who actually did admire his work Richard Wright not showing up very much, getting booted Jerry Garcia records his Zabriskie Point soundtrack music in much less time than he wanted to. And has his payment stolen by Mickey Hart's dad. Who also steals car parts and speakers from Bear Floyd does more regrouping, post-breakup with Roger. Roger gets cranky. Clapton gets a cheeseburger. Roger is still cranky today that the band he walked away from and then sued when they didn't die without him will not promote his albums on their social media The Grateful Dead play for the largest outdoor rock audience of all time in upstate New York. And perform long soundcheck concerts for free on top of that Pink Floyd's 1975 SoCal shows being ruined by LAPD for 4 days Phil Lesh drinks Canadian Whisky with mystery capsules in it and Jerry Garcia crawls around on the floor like a caterpillar who can't leave the room on his own Kurt Loder gives a mean-spirited review of a mean-spirited album. After all, God ordained this special relationship for wives, husbands, and mothers as confirmed by Jesus in Matthew 19:5b: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”. TODAY'S PRAYER: Abba Father, I admit that I am often afraid and embarrassed to openly tell you all that is going on inside me — even though I know you know it all anyway. Teach me what boldness in prayer looks like as I draw near your throne of grace. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 112). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will seek God's perspective on my situation. For I know that in all things God works together for good to those of us who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Curiosity, luck and drive are three words that revolve around singer-songwriter Billy Keane. He was born with all three traits and they are the hallmark of his music, especially his new album Oh, These Days. The seven song cycle was written during the pandemic and right after some very big life changes: he got divorced, quit alcohol and split with his band The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow. He approached his healing process with an extreme curiosity and a need for simple living. For the last several years, he's been cultivating a simple space to ignite creativity in the Western Massachusetts town of Lenox, MA, where he owns land and a small cottage. In our conversation, Billy talks about his roots in spirituality and his early devotion to music. Keane was born in Australia while his father was working as a minister there. They moved their family to Connecticut when he was two years old. He left his hometown at 18 for college, but left for Seattle to work in commercial deep-sea diving. From there, he made his way to Western Mass where he found himself working at James Taylor's studio. James and his wife Kim quickly realized that Billy was a talented musician and turned into key figures and big time supporters. Oh, These Days, Billy's second album, is truly a meditation on the human experience met with an insatiable love for life and rebirth.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

These Days of Awe invite us into the heart of prayer, or Tefillah, in Hebrew. Prayer is a universal act, a meeting place between the human and the divine, and during these days, it takes on an even more profound significance. Tefilah is less about asking God for what we need, and more about aligning ourselves with God's will. For Christians, the idea of interceding with Jesus as our mediator adds a layer of grace to this sacred time.

Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticFrank Ocean & ROSALÍA - CHANGESThe almost impossible, arguably futile practice of writing about leaks was presented with a new challenge this week in the form of several Frank Ocean-related surfacings. The chatter comes at an interesting time for Ocean fans, who are still reeling from the coverage surrounding the revered artist's divisive Coachella set. As previously reported, Ocean ultimately opted not to return for the second weekend of the 2023 festival, citing a leg injury. In recent days, fans have been in operating in warp speed on Reddit and Twitter, as well as elsewhere, in response to several alleged leaks. At the time of this writing, at least two of these alleged leaks—originally surfacing under the claimed titles of “Steer It” and “The Line”—have been widely discredited as likely being the results of an A.I. scam. The veracity of another alleged leak, titled “These Days,” has not been confirmed. Fans, however, were initially showing more confidence in this particular track being legitimate. Given that it's a leak, it's safe to say we can most likely not expect anything to ever be confirmed.source: Frank Ocean & Rosalía Song “Changes,” Accompanying Video Leak Online | ComplexSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

(An actual theory of human origins). *Licks for the Leakeys: Hear how Doug was “flogged” but good in 8th grade science class, (mostly for acting up), but tangentially, for laughing out loud about assertions regarding human evolution that Mary Leakey herself would later admit were “nonsense.” CORRECTION – the most feared paddler at Doug's government school was actually Mr. Witcher in science class and not Mr. French who belted it out in Auto-Mechanics class, (just in case any old class-mates are keeping track). *One of These Days…. One of These Days, Lucy… Brodie and RSR pursue an edifying and eye-opening evaluation of more of the evidence for a supposed human ancestor called Australopithecus Afarensis in the “scientific” journals, (but named Lucy in the schoolhouse). INSERT Laetoli Footprints IMAGE *The Laetoli Footprints: The Smithsonian claims that Laetoli contains “the oldest documented bipedal footprint trails” (which supposedly belong to afarensis) but in 2005, an article from “Scientific American” reported that: “The prints show that whoever made them had a humanlike foot arch, and the reconstructed A. afarensis foot exhibits just such an arch... The problem, Harcourt-Smith and Hilton say, is that the reconstruction is actually based on a patchwork of bones from 3.2-million-year-old afarensis and 1.8-million-year-old Homo habilis. And one of the bones used to determine whether the foot was in fact arched--the so-called navicular--is from H. habilis, not A. afarensis.” Along with the fact that the Laetoli footprints probably don't even belong to afarensis, they aren't the “oldest documented bipedal footprints”. “Science daily” reported in 2017 that: “Newly discovered human-like footprints from Crete may put the established narrative of early human evolution to the test. The footprints are approximately 5.7 million years old and were made at a time when previous research puts our ancestors in Africa -- with ape-like feet.” This, while nearly annihilating the classic “out of Africa” story, is only one of the many discoveries squeezing evolution. The Smithsonian (like many evolutionists) claims that Afarensis “stood on two legs and regularly walked upright”, but in the same article, pose the questions: “Did Au. afarensis usually walk upright like modern humans, or did they spend more time climbing trees like other living African apes?” and “We know Au. afarensis were capable of walking upright on two legs, but they would have walked differently than modern humans do today; so, what did their bipedal locomotion look like?” Evolutionists J. T. Stern Jr., and R. L. Susman, partially answered those questions when they wrote in the “American Journal of Physical Anthropology”: “The fact that the anterior portion of the iliac blade faces laterally in humans but not in Chimpanzees is obvious. The marked resemblance of AL 288-1 (Lucy) to the chimpanzee is equally obvious… It suggests to us that the mechanism of lateral pelvic balance during bipedalism was closer to that in apes than in humans.” With evolutionists William Harcourt-Smith and Charles Hilton concluding: “afarensis almost certainly did not walk like us or, by extension, like the hominids at Laetoli.” While “afarensis” being occasionally bipedal wouldn't prove that they were human ancestors, (after all, lots of animals are bipedal and apes occasionally walking upright is nothing special) the hypothesis that afarensis was bipedal isn't worth much thought because there are so many Problems with ‘Lucy' as an Upright Walker. Some evolutionists have recognized the issues with “afarensis” as a human ancestor. Algis Vincent Kuliukas wrote in the journal “Advances in Anthropology”: “The general shape of the pelvis of Australopithecus afarensis is confirmed to be fundamentally different from both Homo and extant great apes, and not intermediate between them.” With Britannica defining “Australopithecus” (not just afarensis) as a “group of extinct primates closely related to, if not actually ancestors of, modern human beings”. Which means that the scientists writing for Brittanica are also not convinced that the “most famous human ancestor”, is actually a human ancestor.
