Send us Fan MailAs prefunk to next week's first Peter Yates episode, BULLITT, for his HACKS 4X4, we re-present our first Yates film, covered last year, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE. Coyle is so good and co-host Ken's befuddlement so severe that Yates also directed KRULL is what eventually led to this season of HACKS. Below is the sadly prescient original show notes for our Coyle episode written by show note genius, Thomas:The second 1x1 feature rounding out Season 14 and, chosen by Jack, the film is THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (1973). Directed by Peter Yates, whose career TGTPTU is unlikely to cover in a future 4x4 despite having Krull and Bullitt in his credits, TFOEC is an adaptation of George V. Higgins' inaugural novel and notable as a unromanticized depiction of crime in artistic response to The Godfather, the Puzo book and Coppola film each preceding, respectively, the book and movie versions of TFOEC by one year.  Higgins would take issue with the book as his debut novel. The former deputy assistant attorney general claimed to have written and burned 14 novels over 17 years prior to TFOEC and would go on to author over 30 books, both fiction and nonfiction before his fatal heart attack in 1999, but none with the impact of his first. As seasonal guest host Jack points out, nearly all the dialogue in the film is as it is on the page, and the pages are dripping with dialogue that creates the setting and action for this ironic story of “friends” who double-cross and live less than glamorous lives as Irish mobsters and criminals in Boston.  Yates populates the film with faces, faces that we don't see much anymore, distinct faces and every one telling a story, from the titular Coyle plated by Robert Mitchum who earlier in this life reluctantly left the assembly line to be an actor to actor Alex Rocco who starred as Moe Greene in The Godfather and helped Mitchum meet some of his old criminal friends whom Rocco had to leave behind after he (the actor Alex Rocco) was held for questioning in relation to the murder that kicked off the Boston Irish Gang War of the 1960s to James Tolkan before he'd lost his hair a decade prior to portraying Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future movies and Detective Hugh Lubic in the Cannon Films classic Masters of the Universe.  For this episode, everyone did research: Jack and Thomas pair off for book report; Ryan covers the career of Mitchum; and Ken covers Yates and laments how now Hollywood lacks hacks as well as provides a new shaggy dog with The Pals of Charlie Brown. Make sure to wipe your prints clean on this one before listening with a friend. NEXT WEEK: Peter Yates, HACK, Episode #1: BULLITT. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!): Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Oh Brother
Cape Fear Review — Javier Bardem, Amy Adams & Patrick Wilson (Apple TV+)

Oh Brother

Send us Fan MailWe're two episodes into Apple TV+'s new adaptation of Cape Fear, and we have some thoughts. The series, which dropped its first two episodes on June 5th, stars Javier Bardem as Max Cady, Amy Adams as attorney Anna Bowden, and Patrick Wilson as her husband Tom — a family now living under the shadow of a man they may have wronged. Scorsese and Spielberg are both on board as executive producers, which raises the bar considerably. We came in with full knowledge of the source material. Mike read John D. McDonald's original novel, and both films — the 1962 version with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, and Scorsese's 1991 remake with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte — are part of the conversation throughout. What we were hoping to see is a reimagining that earns its place alongside those films. What we got, at least in these first two episodes, is something we're still trying to make sense of.The issues start early. Javier Bardem's portrayal of Max Cady lacks the menace that both Mitchum and De Niro brought to the role in very different ways. His introduction at the fundraiser gala — rambling speech, handed the microphone without hesitation, no security in sight — was hard to take seriously. The violence skews gratuitous in a way that feels less like intensity and more like a substitute for it. There are subplots involving the teenage son, an online chat that's clearly not what it seems, and a mysterious masked figure in a green trench coat that we couldn't make heads or tails of. The series also appears to be steering toward a version of events where Max Cady may actually be innocent — which, if true, is a significant departure from everything that makes this story work.We also noticed an Easter egg worth mentioning: Wesley Strick, who wrote the screenplay for the '91 film, shows up in a cameo as an ER doctor. We're essentially split after two episodes — one of us is out, the other is holding on to see what episode three brings. We'll check in again if the series turns things around — and if you don't see another Cape Fear episode on the channel, that's probably your answer. If you've seen the films, read the book, or are watching the series yourself, we want to hear from you — especially if you're a Javier Bardem fan and think he's bringing something to the role we're not seeing yet.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show! If you don't know Cape Fear, every generation seems to get its own version. A dangerous man strolls into town looking for revenge. In 1962, it was Robert Mitchum. In 1991, it was Robert De Niro. And in 2026, Robert Pattinson... jk, Javier Bardem takes the reins as the next grim reaper. With Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg executive producing, this version takes the classic story, fleshes it out, blows it up, while also filtering it through a modern thermal lens. Warning, if you're not a horror junkie some of these scenes are a bit hard to stomach... On the podcast, we break down the first two episodes, make our comparisons, talk pros, cons, stray thoughts, and give our rating. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are continuing a theme from last week's episode (and the week prior) with guest Carrie Mithchum, daughter of actor Christopher Mitchum and granddaughter of the towering figure Robert Mithcum. So what's the theme? Well, Carrie is related to guest Suzanne Lloyd and right after our conversation with Suzanne, she asked us if we wanted to talk to Carrie and welp, here we are. So thanks Suzanne. Like her father and grandfather (as well as her son, her uncle, brother) Carrie Mitchum began her career as an actress and as we learn, she pivoted to a career as a chef after a stint at the Cordon Bleu in Paris. She's also a philanthropist since our last chat launched a website, Mitchums Kitchen with recipes, merch, a blog and much more. Carrie talks to us about growing up around acting with her dad Christopher as they travelled around the world as he tool parts that took him to foreign countries like Thailand and Hong Kong for films like H-Bomb and Spain for a film called Nightmare City. Her story about her youth on sets in the middle of nowhere are fascinating. We also speak to Carrie about what it was like spending time with her grandfather on the set of the film, That Championship Season as well as discussing his time as riding the rails before he became an actor, his poetry, his music career with albums like Calypso – Is Like So and That Man Robert Mitchum…Sings. We discuss Mitchum's favorite food, the dreaded tabloids, the Harold Lloyd collection and her love of animals. Take a listen to this encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

It's one of the great films of the '90s, from one of the most Pop Screen-friendly directors of all time: Jim Jarmusch, a man who can't even make a little family drama without sticking Tom Waits in there. Here, he's making a Western starring Johnny Depp, Robert Mitchum, a lot of people who would go on to be very famous, and the former lead singer of the Stooges. In a dress and bonnet. It's so good that we've redone the show's theme music in its honour this week. Join Graham and Rob as they discuss the light the film sheds on the Western genre, its place as the first of Jarmusch's offbeat genre exercises, and the film's other hidden punk rock cameo that will blow you away. Plus: the pre-wearing-wacky-hats-for-Disney-money years of Depp's career, Iggy Pop's advice to young musicians and more!If you don't want us to have to go to the town of Machine to earn our fortune, you can donate to our Patreon where we're just about to drop an exclusive episode of this show about Michael Jackson's Ghosts. If you listened to our conversations with cinematographer Michael McDonough (Season 2, Episode 159) or cinematographer and director Ernest Dickerson (Season 2, Episode 58), then you know we love BOSCH. We were thrilled to speak to Titus not only about his work on the show but also about his life, the unconventional road he took to becoming an actor, and his perspective on acting as a career. Titus also reflects on working with and learning from the late cinematographer Haskell Wexler, and we discuss the relationship between actors, the camera, and the entire camera department. We later learn how Titus enforced good behaviour on the sets of BOSCH, and he reveals how the writers of the show would deal with anyone not preparing properly. Titus later reveals some of the acting inspirations behind his performance of Harry Bosch, and he recounts an evening spent smoking pot and receiving wisdom from actors James Coburn and Robert Mitchum after moving to Los Angeles. - Recommended Viewing: BOSCH - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

I've got another multi-movie episode here in the 732nd edition of Have You Ever Seen. Jacques Tourneur directs Out Of The Past and Robert Siodmak is at the helm of The Spiral Staircase, even if it feels at times like one directed the other. Yet they both do a very good job with these films noir, including killing off many of their characters. Rhonda Fleming is in both, but in Past you've got Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas & Jane Greer, who gives one of the better performances in the history of femmes fatale. In Staircase, Dorothy McGuire, George Brent and Ethel Barrymore have centre stage...and they all deliver too. The first flick has a VERY complex plot, while the second is a straight-forward "a killer is on the loose" whodunit. So lend me 50 minutes of your time as I scoop out the innards of Out Of The Past and The Spiral Staircase. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard.   Fandom Podcast Network Contact Information - - Fandom Podcast Network YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/c/FandomPodcastNetwork - Master feed for all FPNet Audio Podcasts: http://fpnet.podbean.com/ - Couch Potato Theater Audio Podcast Master Feed: https://fpnet.podbean.com/category/couch-potato-theater - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Fandompodcastnetwork - Email: fandompodcastnetwork@gmail.com - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fandompodcastnetwork/ - X: @fanpodnetwork / https://twitter.com/fanpodnetwork -Bluesky: @fanpodnetwork / https://bsky.app/profile/fanpodnetwork.bsky.social Host & Guest Contact Info: - Kevin Reitzel on X, Instagram, Threads, Discord & Letterboxd: @spartan_phoenix / Bluesky: @spartanphoenix - Kyle Wagner on X: @AKyleW / Instagram & Threads: @Akylefandom / @akyleW on Discord / @Ksport16: Letterboxd / Bluesky: @akylew #CouchPotatoTheater #CPT #FandomPodcastNetwork #FandomPodcastNetworkClassics #FPNet #FPN #Scrooged #Scrooged1988 #ScroogedMovie #RichardDonner #CharlesDickens #AChristmasCarol #BillMurray #FrankCross #KarenAllen #JohnForsythe #BobcatGoldthwait #CarolKane #RobertMitchum #MichaelJPollard #AlfreWoodard #ChristmasMovie #ChristmasMovies #1988Movies #KevinReitzel #KyleWagner

Scrooged (1988) is an American Christmas fantasy black comedy directed by Richard Donner and written by Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue. Inspired by Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, it offers a metafictional modern retelling starring Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a cynical TV executive preparing a live broadcast of A Christmas Carol who is visited by ghosts on Christmas Eve. The supporting cast includes Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Michael J. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard.Produced on a $32 million budget and filmed in New York City and Hollywood from December 1987 to March 1988, the film marked Murray's return after a four-year hiatus following Ghostbusters. Production was turbulent due to creative clashes between Murray and Donner, though the film featured numerous celebrity cameos, including Murray's brothers. Marketed heavily around Murray's ghost-themed persona, Scrooged was released November 23, 1988, grossed over $100 million worldwide, and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup. Though critics were mixed, it has since become a Christmastime staple and is often cited as an unconventional or ahead-of-its-time holiday classic.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Sisters Who Scene It

Send us a textKatie and Bridget cheer on Mary Lou Retton doing backflips as Tiny Tim as they re-watch the WEIRD 80's movie: Scrooged! It's one of the strangest adaptations of A Christmas Carol and we blame BILL MURRAY JUST. CAUSE! Come along as we meet Frank - aka Scrooge, who is a jerk for about 90% of this movie, so much so that a grandma dies offscreen because of his horrible advertisement commercial that reminds us of A Manson Family Christmas. Aka, how television and media basically is today! When he gets visited by three ghosts to help teach him what it means to be kind (and to also kick him in the balls multiple times), he learns that Christmas isn't about television or making money... It's about reconnecting with your long lost girlfriend who really should have just ignored your missed call and/or replied to you with a "who dis?" message! We've got a movie that feels like it should have been directed by Tim Burton with lots of Bill Murray ad-libbing that you'll definitely want to take an edible for this holiday season! Released in 1988, it stars Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Bobcat Goldthwait, David Johansen, Carol Kane, Alfre Woodard, and Robert Mitchum.

EPISODE 112 -  “CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH: JACQUELINE WHITE” - 11/03/25 When we think of our beloved Classic film stars who are still with us, we tend to think of EVA MARIE SAINT, ANN BLYTH, KIM NOVAK, ROBERT WAGNOR, or DICK VAN DYKE, however, there is one star among us who will be turning 103 in November. The name JACQUELINE WHITE may not ring any bells today, but for a brief time in the 1940s, she was a beautiful, talented leading lady with much promise. In fact, when she was up for the lead role of the mother in the 1946 film The Yearling, she was told by the producers that she was too beautiful to portray the simple pioneer woman. The role went to JANE WYMAN, who probably would have been none-too-pleased to know that, apparently, she was just fine playing such a plain and simple woman! But as a consolation prize, Wyman was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actress. Join us as we pay tribute to Jacqueline White and her contribution to classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Jacqueline White Official Biography, 1946, RKO Studios; “Jacqueline White May Be The New Irene Dunne, December 1, 1946, Los Angeles Times; “Jacqueline White to Wed,” September 20, 1948, by Louella Parsons, Los Angeles Examiner; “Snappy Shots,” October 24, 1948, by Dorothy Manners, Los Angeles Examiner; “An Interview With…Jacqueline White,” by Mike Fitzgerald, Western Clippings; Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IBDB.com; IMDBPro.com; Movies Mentioned: Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant  (1942), starring Lionel Barrymore, Van Johnson, & Susan Peters; Reunion in France (1942), starring Joan Crawford & John Wayne; Air Raid Wardens (1943), starring Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, & Jacqueline White; Three Hearts for Julia (1943), starring Ann Sothern & Melvyn Douglas; Pilot #5 (1943), starring Franchot Tone, Marsha Hunt, & Gene Kelly; Swing Shift Maisie (1943), starring Ann Sothern & James Craig; A Guy Named Joe (1943), starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, & Van Johnson; Song of Russia (1944), starring Robert Taylor & Susan Peters; Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), starring Spencer Tracy, Van Johnson, & Robert Walker; The Harvey Girls (1946), starring Judy Garland, John Hodiak, & Angela Lansbury; The Show Off (1946), starring Red Skelton, Marilyn Maxwell, & Marjorie Main; Banjo (1947), starring Sharron Moffat & Jacqueline White; Seven Keys To Baldpate (1947), starring Phillip Terry & Jacqueline White; Crossfire (1947), starring Robert Young, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, & Gloria Grahame; Night Song (1947); starring Dana Andrews & Merle Oberon; Return of the Bad Men (1948), starring Randolph Scott, Robert Ryan, Anne Jeffries, & Jacqueline White; Mystery In Mexico (1948), starring William Lundigan & Jacqueline White; Riders on The Range (1950), starring Tim Holt & Jacqueline White; The Capture (1950), starring Lew Ayres & Teresa Wright The Narrow Margin (1952), starring Charles MacGRaw, Marie Windsor & Jacqueline White; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast.
