Dr. Corinne Low is not your typical Wharton professor. An economist whose research focuses on gender, discrimination, and the hidden costs of modern parenthood, she's also a mother, wife, and author navigating the very struggles she studies. I sit down with Dr. Low to talk about her new book Having It All (out September 23rd), a data-driven yet deeply personal guide to escaping the false promise of “work-life balance.” From the silent epidemic of exhausted mothers to the stubborn realities of unequal housework—even when women are the breadwinners—Dr. Low pulls no punches in showing us why the overwhelm isn't in our heads. It's in the data. With humor, candor, and hard truths, she invites us to redefine success on our own terms, reclaim our roles as the protagonists of our lives, and maybe even throw away the houseplants for a while. What you'll hear in this episode goes far beyond economics—it's a wake-up call for anyone who's ever felt like they're “failing” at doing it all. Spoiler: the system is failing you, not the other way around. From Single Mom Upbringing to Wharton Professor: How Dr. Low's childhood shaped her drive for career stability and independence. (04:58)The Silent Epidemic of Parental Time: Why today's parenting feels harder, and the data proving we're not crazy for feeling overwhelmed. (05:28)From Journalist Dreams to Economist Reality: Dr. Low's path from writing aspirations to a career in economics and research. (14:43)Facing Discrimination Myths with Data: What her research actually reveals about gender, discrimination, and reverse discrimination. (18:42)Winning the Bread and Baking It Too: Why female breadwinners still do more at home, and how gender roles refuse to budge. (23:13)The 30-Year Squeeze: How careers, childcare, and aging parents collide to make midlife especially exhausting. (31:26)Reclaiming the Protagonist Role: Why women must stop being supporting characters in their own lives. (35:06)Redefining Success in Economic Terms: Why utility—deep joy and satisfaction—is a better measure than the white picket fence. (38:48)Tuckered Out Moments: From pumping on Amtrak to juggling a newborn and a book launch, Dr. Low shares her real-life exhaustion stories. In this episode, Cindy Esliger discusses how the “always on” hustle culture mindset in society is pushing us steadily towards burnout. We're running on empty, and what are we rushing towards? She explores the transformative idea of doing less, more slowly. A mindset shift towards doing what matters most with intention instead of simply working harder, faster, and longer for no good reason. How do we break free of the hustle culture habits and switch to a calmer and more sustainable approach to work? Cindy has some ideas for us. Performance-based productivity keeps us looking busy while not accomplishing much. When we constantly pressure ourselves to do more, faster, we often miss out on the ‘why'. We start believing exhaustion is the only way. But Cindy offers the radical idea that calm isn't the enemy of productivity, it's the foundation. Calm is not passive; it's powerful, creative, and strategic. Calm doesn't demand strict, overbearing control, either. Instead of clinging to rigid control and pushing ourselves harder, perhaps we should let go and show up with presence instead.Cindy shares how we can build self-trust and calm. Start small by showing up for ourselves and keeping our word. Say we'll go for a ten-minute walk after work, and then actually do it. When we can count on ourselves, we have more power. We can make better decisions on how to spend our time. Cindy reminds us that success should be sustainable and that requires doing work we enjoy at a pace that doesn't destroy us. Trust that if we pause to catch our breath, our career won't implode. It's a change in mindset to actively let go of the frantic productivity rush we're currently in. Nowadays it seems like everyone wants to be “successful”—but how many of us actually feel it? We may know that true success is found in following the One who made us. And yet, in our increasingly polarized and comparison-rife world, many of us find our hearts yearning for an ever-elusive kind of success: in money, power, influence, or accolades. My guest on this week’s episode of The Love Offering Podcast, Pete Portal, helps us reframe our understanding of what it means to flourish. In his new book, How to Be (Un)Successful: An Unlikely Guide to Human Flourishing, Pete invites us to consider that success is not about what we have—but about how we live. This conversation is an opportunity to redefine success, choosing:* Love over efficiency* Depth over volume* Real friendship over cold transactions Jesus’ life and teaching are the perfect antidote for a world sick with the wrong sort of success. And He invites us again to experience a success that truly satisfies our souls. I pray this episode encourages you to live a life of flourishing, right where you are. “Generativity. Think of it as generating something from yourself and putting it into the world.” Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, explore the positive side of aging with Dr. Deborah Heiser, an applied developmental psychologist who pivoted from studying depression and Alzheimer's to researching what we actually have to look forward to as we age. "You can run faster than me, but I'm happier than you." Dr. Heiser's transformation began at a dinner party when someone challenged her: "What do we have to look forward to as we age? You are studying everything that scares us." This moment sparked her journey into understanding generativity—an emotional developmental milestone we reach in midlife where we feel compelled to give back and make our mark on the world. The conversation reveals a powerful truth: we're biologically programmed to become happier and more fulfilled as we age. This isn't the superficial happiness of opening presents, but the deep satisfaction of asking "Did I matter?" and finding ways to generate impact. Whether through podcasting, volunteering, or passing down family recipes on grandmother's index cards, we're all engaging in mentorship, often without realizing it. Dr. Heiser makes a crucial distinction between doing your job and true mentoring. A teacher advising students is working; mentoring happens outside the classroom, through voluntary emotional connections. Her book "The Mentorship Edge" helps readers recognize and quantify their impact, filling what she calls their "impact bank." Most importantly, she reminds us that midlife identity shifts aren't crises but opportunities to pull forgotten aspects of ourselves from the back of the closet and engage parts of our identity we've neglected while surviving our earlier years. Key Topics: Why We Get Happier as We Age (03:08) Understanding Generativity and the Difference Between Generous and Generative (11:07) Identity Shifts in Midlife (17:11) Family Traditions as Mentorship (22:53) Mentorship vs. Doing Your Job (23:30) Reframing Negative Perspectives on Aging (25:46) Stephanie and Kevin's Wrap-Up (36:30) Resources: Dr. Deborah Heiser on Psychology Today On LinkedIn Her Website The Mentorship Edge (book) If you like what you've been hearing, we invite you to subscribe on your favorite platform and leave us a review. “Prepping for the GMAT was one of the biggest, most self-motivated projects of my adult life. It gave me concrete feedback I hadn't experienced in years. Improvement wasn't visible every day, but I could see how my effort turned into results.” In this episode of Inside the GMAT, GMAC Zach sits down with Julia Shackelford, who earned a perfect GMAT score of 805, but insists the real story is everything behind the number. Julia shares how months of disciplined practice, self-reflection, and resilience transformed not only her test performance but also her confidence in tackling challenges far beyond the GMAT. Together, Zach and Julia explore what it really takes to succeed on the GMAT, why natural ability matters less than consistent effort, and how shifting your focus from outcomes to process can change the way you see yourself. About Our Guest: Julia earned a BBA in Finance from the University of Arkansas in 2015 and spent the following nine years in banking, where she focused on lending, business development, training, and compliance. She now specializes in helping students excel on exams like the GMAT. She hopes to use what she learned through preparing for her own exam to improve the experience of other students. Have you ever had an experience that changed the way you show up in the world? One that reignited your passion and reminded you why you care so deeply? Today I return from a 19-day summer break after volunteering at Camp Footprint, a sleepaway camp for kids living with CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth Disease). I served on the programming staff and rediscovered “Little Marc,” the playful, present version of myself who still believes in the power of community. This experience reminded me that podcasting isn't only about numbers or downloads...it's about people. The kids at camp showed me what it means to feel seen, supported, and celebrated. What I brought home from camp wasn't a gear review or new tech tip,it was candy runs, laughter, and a reminder that play builds community. And that's exactly the spirit I want to bring back to this show.Episode Highlights: [01:26] Introducing the Team and Camp Footprint[04:43] Song Swap Showdown Announcement[14:45] Impact of Camp Footprint on Me[22:57] Reconnecting with Little Marc[27:56] Handling Unexpected Challenges[29:20] The True Meaning of Community in Podcasting[32:20] Incorporating Playfulness into Work[45:45] Redefining Success in Podcasting[55:00] Centering People Over MetricsLinks & Resources: Join The Empowered Podcasting Facebook Group:www.facebook.com/groups/empoweredpodcastingGet Your Tickets for The Empowered Podcasting Conference:www.empoweredpodcasting.comSong Swap Showdown: www.songswapshowdown.comEpisode Cover Photo taken by:https://cieriphotography.comRemember to rate, follow, share, and review our podcast. In this episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta sits down with actress, producer, and entrepreneur Tika Sumpter for a candid conversation on redefining beauty, navigating motherhood, and a first look at building her new brand, Yummy Tummy. Known for her powerful presence on screen, Tika opens up about her creative journey beyond Hollywood and the drive that pushed her into wellness and entrepreneurship.Tika shares how her upbringing shaped her ideas of beauty and confidence, grounding her in authenticity rather than Hollywood's narrow ideals. She reflects on how social media often presents only the “highlight reel,” reminding us that true beauty is rooted in health, self-acceptance, and evolution rather than perfection.Motherhood also plays a central role in Tika's story. After her own challenges with preeclampsia and postpartum recovery, she recognized how little grace women often give themselves during this transformative period. That realization inspired Yummy Tummy, a line of multi-use, plant-based products designed to simplify care for both mom and baby—offering support, healing, and confidence in the most tender moments of life. But building a brand isn't glamorous. Tika pulls back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes realities—compliance, packaging, marketing—and the resilience it takes to bring a meaningful product into the world. Her honesty highlights both the challenges and the rewards of creating something that truly matters. This is more than a beauty conversation—it's about self-rediscovery, empowerment, and rewriting the narrative of what it means to care for ourselves and our families.Tune in to hear Tika's journey and the vision behind Yummy Tummy. To learn more about Tika Sumpter visit her website and social media. Here's the truth: “Getting paid to be you” has been sold to us like it's the holy grail of freedom. But here's the part no one tells you—it can just as easily become another performance trap. Another hustle. Another way of proving instead of actually living. In this episode, I'm walking you through the alchemy of dethroning this shiny mantra and what it really takes to feel free in your work and your life. Spoiler: it's not more courses, more clients, more followers, or another spiritual playbook for success. We're getting into:Why chasing more never gets you where you think it will. How my business went from defining me… to simply being what I do.The subtle but powerful difference between branding yourself and becoming yourself. The dance between survival mode, choice points, and actual maturity. And yes—a story about Benji, pasta, parmesan, and salt (because you know I can't leave out the messy, human parts). If you've been trying to “make it work” by being more visible, more polished, more everything… this one's for you. Because the alchemical approach to getting paid to be you isn't about performing harder. It's about slowing down, purifying what's in the way, and finally becoming the version of you who can walk through the right doors.Listen with your body, not just your mind. Something new wants to move through you.Send us a message and let us know what you love about this episodeImportant Links: www.Megthompson.com Attuned - CLICK HERE Let's Connect on Instagram - CLICK HERE

In this episode of What She Did Next, Kehla sits down with Ebonie Allard—Artist, Entrepreneur, Human Design & Gene Keys Guide, and podcast host—for a deeply vulnerable and illuminating conversation about self-intimacy, devotion, and redefining success on your own terms. Ebonie shares how years of scaling her business, managing team turnover, and chasing the next level left her exhausted and questioning her path. Her transformation began when she turned inward, confronting her core wound of half-heartedness (Gene Key 29) and softening into a new way of leading—one rooted in self-love, presence, and invisible impact. Together, they explore how the turbulence of entrepreneurship can reveal where we've been rejecting ourselves, why intimacy with self is the ultimate foundation for sustainable success, and how Ebonie's “45 Soft” practice became a devotional antidote to hustle culture. Listeners will hear how Ebonie now supports culture-makers and visionaries to embrace softness, align with their natural rhythms, and create ripples of impact without burning out.

We all know that one guy who is tough, resilient, loves a fight, and can make things happen, even when he's behind. I think, in a way, we all want to be that guy. I'm convinced that a man who is scrappy is a man who can achieve everything he wants in this world – even if it first seems out of reach. My guest today, Pete Roberts, agrees. And, he knows a thing or two about the resourcefulness and scrappiness it takes to revive an American tradition – manufacturing. You know him as the founder of Origin and Jocko Fuel. Today, we talk about the power of purpose, how and why a man needs to define success, regular people building irregular things, what he looks for in people to hire and promote to leadership in his organization, and making yourself capable of carrying burdens. Are you stuck in the trap of needing to be approved of to feel secure? This episode shows how external validation can quietly erode identity — and what it takes to break free. What happens when the version of you that people applaud is the very version you're outgrowing? In this powerful opening to Week 10, Julie Holly names a quiet trap many high-capacity humans fall into: approval as identity. Whether you're navigating public leadership, relational shifts, or internal fatigue, this episode calls out the prison of external validation — and shows how to root your worth in something unshakable.Julie shares a raw, real-time story about facing failure in commercial real estate, and the identity unraveling that followed. You'll hear how the fear of being seen failing became louder than the failure itself — and how separating facts from fiction revealed a more anchored identity underneath. You'll also hear:The psychological toll of identity conflict — and how it plays out in high performersHow approval becomes a false safety net that slowly erodes clarity and courageThe shift from performative peacekeeping to aligned leadershipA real-life recalibration story from Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-AWhy ILR doesn't start with behavior — it starts with beingWhat it looks like to stop chasing affirmation and start anchoring to vertical truthToday's Micro-Recalibration:Name one area where you've been performing for approval — and ask what it's costing you in identity. If you lead others, practice showing up from alignment, not consensus. Clarity isn't unkind — it's responsible. You don't have to keep performing for peace. It's time to break free.If this episode gave you language you've been missing, please rate and review the show so more high-capacity humans can find it. When your identity fuses with what you produce, burnout is inevitable. This episode helps high-capacity humans recalibrate from performance to presence — before their purpose gets buried under pressure. If the results stopped, would you still know who you are?For high performers, that question feels risky. Because somewhere along the way, “doing well” became the same as “being worthy.”In this episode of Identity-Level Recalibration, we're exploring what happens when performance starts shaping identity — and how that slow slide leads to invisible burnout, fractured self-trust, and quiet resentment. Here's what we unpack together:Why success often deepens the approval trapThe subtle difference between identity-fused performance and healthy excellenceHow “helpfulness” and “achievement” become self-protectionWhy burnout is often a symptom of disconnection, not overworkWhat to learn from Anne Morriss' recalibration after public failureWhy celebration is more than a feel-good tool — it's a psychological exit ramp from overidentification (See Episode 38)How to spot identity foreclosure — and where we covered it previouslyIf you've built a life on results, this conversation will feel both tender and clarifying. Because you're not your wins. And when your identity is secure, your leadership becomes sustainable.Micro-Recalibration:Ask yourself: If this project fell apart — would I still know who I am?Let it lead to a deeper recalibration: What do I want to be true about me that isn't tied to output? For leaders:Think of someone you lead who's quietly attaching their worth to performance.Affirm who they are becoming — not just what they produce. That's how we build cultures of identity, not burnout.Need help seeing what you've outgrown?Download the Misalignment Audit in the show notes. The offer? My guest for Episode #322 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Rob Dorgan, a multi-talented professional whose career path has taken him from paralegal to college professor, retail store owner, manufacturing company president, and now licensed massage therapist, certified yoga educator, meditation teacher, and astrologer. Rob is also the author of Awakening the Mystic: A Novel of Cosmic Love and Healing. Episode page with video and more His favorite mistake? Taking what was meant to be a short trip to Europe while working on his PhD — a journey that led him to never return to that academic track. Instead, it opened his eyes to a different pace of life, sparked a reassessment of what success meant to him, and ultimately set him on a more balanced and meaningful career path. In our conversation, Rob shares how that decision — which family and friends initially questioned — allowed him to escape burnout and embrace a life and career that integrates his passions for teaching, creativity, and well-being. He reflects on lessons learned from his “type A” years in academia and business, the importance of slowing down, and how yoga, meditation, and practical stress relief can improve both personal health and workplace culture. We also discuss his experience bringing these tools into corporate environments, where employees not only benefit individually but also feel more supported by their organizations. “Stress comes on so slowly that it becomes your normal — and you forget what life without it feels like.” That realization, Rob says, is what helped him see the deeper value of meditation and mindful living. We also talk about his book's concepts — from the “five kleshas” in yoga philosophy to the idea of an “inner council” — and how self-awareness can help us navigate life's choices. Whether you're navigating a career change, seeking better work-life balance, or simply curious about practical ways to reduce stress, Rob's story offers valuable insights and inspiration.
