Actor, director, and writer Megan Rosati was not a child vampire. But from first watch, she so identified with Eli, the 12-year-old vampire in LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, the modern horror classic from Sweden, that she would show the film to people to help them understand her. In this episode, she and Jordan dig into the ways we can feel like we're different -- especially in adolescence -- and the power of genre films to make a statement. Then Jordan has a quick thing about the late, great Scott Wampler and the impact of his work.To support or learn more about THE VANITY, go to Seed&SparkTikTok @thevanityiswatchingInstagram @thevanityfilmTwitter @thevanityfilm***With Jordan Crucchiola and Megan Rosati

Hold up. Before you go any further, I'm gonna need you to take a sip of this holy water. It's not that I don't trust you, but you look like the kind of person who would consort with demonic entities and vampiric overlords. It is the final Versus battle of the season and it's a real nail biter. Two hosts. Two movies. Two films that neither Dave or Chris have seen before. Listen to hear which is the definitive vampire movie and whose gamble paid off.
Episode 69. In today's episode, Meredith and Kaity talk about Let the Right One In (2008). They go in-depth about how atypical this vampire movie really is. With pre-teen puppy love and a feral young vampire, this movie is quite the ride! They also talk about the pacing differences & similarities between the American version vs the Swedish version. Kaity and Meredith also give their non-expert opinion on what age is appropriate to show this movie to kids. Intro and Outro music by the talented A Corten and art provided by Javon Blair.
In this long overdue episode we jump into the long overdue world of foreign cinema. It's funny as much as we've talked about our love and respect for foreign films we've never actually reviewed one. Trigger Warning, this book contains graphic violence, animal abuse, and sexual assault /harassment. John Ajvide Lindqvist's: Let the Right One In is a vampire story set in a suburb of Stockholm in 1981. It revolves around a 13-year-old boy named Oskar and a young girl named Eli who lives next door. It turns out she is a vampire and as Oskar and Eli develop a romance, he is mercilessly bullied. Along with this, a thrall/serial killer named Håkan terrorizes the town, people fall in love, and family dynamics change. Let the Right One In is a complex novel where the town itself is a character. Read the book, listen to our discussion, and let us know if you agree or disagree with anything we've said. Next month's book is Ronnie's choice and she picked: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

It's time we got around to our next installment in our ongoing MOVIE ROULETTE REVIEW series. Angela picks a movie category from a hat. Each category has a list of movies and we randomly select a number from those categories and thus fall upon what we will be reviewing next. Last time Angela selected “Exsanguinators” and fell upon one of her favorite movies of all time and it set a high bar for vampirism in modern film. Of course, we're discussing Tomas Alfredson's swedish coming of age romance horror “Let the Right One In” from John Lindqvist's novel of the same name (translated I mean). We saw this in the theaters when it premiered in the US and gladly revisit it and cnote some important details we overlooked on first viewing. The story of Oskar and Eli runs deep and this story resonated so much that there is a US remake and a television show that has come out since. How are they gonna deal with those kids aging so quickly if that show goes more than two seasons? We don't plan to watch it, honestly. What Tomas Alfredson gave us feels like the perfect amount. You won't believe the next category Angela draws from a hat. When we meet Oskar, it's 1982 and he's a meek 12-year-old with a shameful blonde pageboy haircut. His parents are divorced, making for a lonely existence on a nondescript housing estate in a suburb of Stockholm. On top of this, local bully Conny's been taunting him at school, his jabs becoming increasingly violent. Meanwhile, people are dying in Oskar's neighborhood, especially around his apartment complex. Could it have something to do with the middle-age man and 12 year old girl that just moved into the building, the ones that placed cardboard on their windows, seemingly to shield them from the outside world? Why one night does that man subdue and hang a pedestrian upside down, slitting his throat until hid blood drains into a funnel? That's when Oskar meets Eli, the girl next door, and takes a liking to her when she solves his Rubik's cube. But Eli's smarts don't come from school – she's been around a while, you see – and she may not even be a she at all. What transpires when Oskar and Eli become friends, and what happens when others in town catch on to Eli's nocturnal habits, are only the beginning of this icy but romantic coming of age drama. If you are making the choice between Let the Right One In and Let Me In, the former is the right one. This taut and moody vampire tale pushes the boundary for what's possible in the genre. Synopsis Let the Right One in is a new twist on the vampire tale, that asks, what if vampires were pedophiles? It's about Oskar, a 12 year old Swedish boy that is relentlessly bullied while he deals with his parents separation. In the course of planning to be Sweden's first school shooter, he meets Eli, the new girl in town that hates shoes and loves having the higher ground. Eli is the stereotypical manic pixie dream girl, who has quirky hobbies like puzzle collecting, communicating through Morse, and violently murdering people by sucking their blood. Review of Let the Right One In (2008) Let the Right One In was remade in English as “Let Me In”, but if you haven't the original, do yourself a favor and watch it in the original language. Not only are the performances a little better overall, most importantly, the tone is vastly better than the remake. The sparse and brutal mise en scene matches the sparse and brutal storyline. The stark empty courtyards and public parks compliment the empty and stark life of lonely latchkey kids. At the heart of the story is a coming of age romance between two tragic characters that is very compelling. There is an impending sense of dread for all the main characters. You are rooting for them, but in pretty much every possible outcome there will be tragedy. This film is an excellent entry into the vampire genre that shows that there are still compelling iterations to explore that don't rely on the Dracula archetype. Score 10/10
