Lauren Cohan Interview: From Joining The Walking Dead to Directing Dead City Episode 6

An actor is very fortunate to have a multi-season run on a series. An actor is even more fortunate to get to see a series through to its natural conclusion. Lauren Cohan went above and beyond that with her Walking Dead journey. Not only did she play Maggie in over 100 episodes of the main series, but then she got to go on to headline a spin-off series opposite Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and that spin-off series earned her her very first executive producing credit and now her very first directing credit as well. She's a key component of one of the biggest television empires ever created, and she's making the most of the opportunities that franchise affords her - opportunities she's earned. The Walking Dead: Dead City picks up a number of years after the events of the main series. When Hershel (Logan Kim) is kidnapped by the Croat (Željko Ivanek) and taken to Manhattan, Maggie must turn to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for help. While Maggie does manage to make it off the island with Hershel, Negan is pressured to remain by The Dama (Lisa Emery). Season 2 kicks off about a year later with the New Babylon Federation conscripting the residents of The Bricks to head into Manhattan for an expeditionary mission tied to their agenda to ultimately retake it. Maggie agrees to go, but only if no one else from her community is forced to do the same. So back to Manhattan she goes, along with a stubborn Ginny (Mahina Napoleon) and a stowaway Hershel. After powering through five episodes of Season 2 as an executive producer and playing Maggie trying to survive yet another perilous mission in the Big Apple, the time has some for Cohan to put on yet another hat. With the release of Season 2, Episode 6, “Bridge Partners Are Hard to Come by These Days,” she is officially a director. In celebration of the milestone achievement, Cohan joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to discuss her early days on The Walking Dead, her experience advocating for herself when her initial series regular contract concluded, how she approached stepping into the executive producer role with Dead City, and how she felt about taking on an extremely ambitious episode for her very first venture as a director. This week, Tommy is joined by actress Lauren Cohan who you know and love from starring in one of the most watched drama series in the history of television, THE WALKING DEAD. Lauren now stars in the spin-off series, THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY. Season 2 is out now and Lauren continues to light up the screen playing the strong, resilient, and very layered character, Maggie Greene. Today, Lauren opens up about why she has wanted to continue playing Maggie for over a decade, how the darkness of THE WALKING DEAD can sometimes affect her, what it was like losing her on-screen partner in that traumatic scene, how her own spin-off came to be, the most surprising thing about working with co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, what exploring that relationship has been like, making her directorial debut this season, if she ever thought about leaving the franchise, what she thinks of the future of THE WALKING DEAD franchise, if she thinks her character will ever die, how much of the season’s plot she knows before production begins, if there was ever a storyline for Maggie she did not agree with, how she navigates imposter syndrome, why she is trying to slow down when she can, the journey of learning how to be kind to herself, why sharing life with the people who matter to you is so important, and so much more. You know her best as Maggie Greene (later Maggie Rhee) on The Walking Dead, but additional credits include Chuck, The Vampire Diaries, Archer, The Boy, The Mindy Project, Mile 22, and Whiskey Cavalier. She described the acting bug as follows: “I have this muscle memory of being on stage and losing all sense of space and time. It was like swimming. Once you taste it, it's so intoxicating to disappear and be present at the same time.” The original The Walking Dead ended in 2022 and branched out into three different shows and actually the next three episodes we'll be chatting with different creatives from each, so stay tuned for interviews with David Zabel, creator of Daryl Dixon spinoff, and Danai Gurira (Michonne), co-creator and star of The Ones Who Live, the Rick and Michonne spinoff. In The Walking Dead - Dead City, we follow Maggie and Negan into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan. “The city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world.” In this interview, she talks about performances feeling “found and private” simultaneously, finding just enough success to keep you going, and how she's kept high energy in the horror genre for over a decade in the Dead universe. One of the most compelling villains to come out of ‘The Walking Dead' was Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan, and now he's back in ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City' (June 18 on AMC). “Since we've last seen him, he's not doing great,” Morgan told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. The story picks up two years after the original series, where Negan and Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan) came to a truce after Negan killed Maggie's husband. “Some of the old Negan is back; he's a showman and not afraid of violence.” The new series explores why Negan is so violent. “What was most important to me was that he wasn't one note [in Dead City]; it would have been easy to be that same guy. How can we show other sides? A villain that's interesting is [one] you can understand why he became a villain.” We'll also “learn a little bit more about Negan's life pre-Walking Dead.” And he's more than happy to keep playing Negan. “I wouldn't still be here if it hasn't been one of the coolest experiences of my work life. I just feel incredibly blessed to be able to play what I think is one of the coolest villains in the history of film/TV.” Visit Newsweek.com to learn more about the podcasts we offer and to catch up on the latest news. The pair navigate New York City on a mission to save Maggie's kidnapped son. Emmy-favorite Pedro Pascal will star in Weapons, the latest movie from Zach Cregger, filmmaker of breakout horror hit, Barbarians. Tom Holland will star in The Crowded Room, a mystery thriller that will also star Amanda Seyfried on AppleTV+. Disney is evidently continuing production on season two of Andor though showrunner Tony Gilroy states he has not been on set since the Writer's Guild of America strike.

Hey Bubblies and welcome to a Mini Bubble of this lil old podcast! In the shortest Mini Bubble yet, I quickly share my thoughts on some series I recently finished. Many know that I'm very particular about series finales and since I just binged Kevin Can F**K Himself, Dead to Me, and The Walking Dead, I need to share my thoughts on how these three shows ended their time on our screens.   Spoilers for AMC's Kevin Can F**k Himself which stars Annie Murphy, Mary Hollis Inboden, Eric Petersen and more.    No spoilers for Netflix's Dead to Me which stars Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, James Marsden and more.    Spoilers for AMC's The Walking Dead which stars Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and many, many, many more.   Thanks for listening and Keep Streaming!

Vi pratar också om: The Boy, Lauren Cohan, Mare Kandre, Mattias Fyhr, Skitigt vackert mörker, Clive Barker, Sigmund Freud, psykoanalysen, jaget, detet och överjaget, Faust, Doktor Faustus, Mephistofeles, Goethe, Tusen och en natt, Titta Dom Snackar, Vacancy, A Nightmare on Elm Street, After Eight, Paradis chokladask, jultomten, tomtenissar, Krampus, Run, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Night House, The Babadook, Panos Cosmatos, Christopher Nolan, Tenet, Inception, Dunkirk, The Dark Night, Interstellar, Gremlins, Relic, Rare Exports, Dune, Marvel och Shudder. Bakom Patreon-väggen erbjuds dubbel speltid med b-sidan Last Night in Soho, högt upp på önskelistan över filmer från 2021 som lyssnarna vill höra oss göra detta med. Göra vad? Better Than Perfect Welcome to our new series titled Better Than Perfect where we watch a series that the other person hasn't seen and the other person absolutely loves. We say early on in the episode that we thought it would be 90 minutes and it clocks in at 2 hours and 13 minutes. Are Ricky Bobby and Sarah Walker multiverse brother and sister? We took some time to discuss the elephant in the room, Chuck's hair in Season 2. We also hit a couple of tangents around Season 2 that we needed to explore but make that recap much longer than the other seasons. Lots of discussion about Season 4 should have been the end of the series rather than the shortened Season 5. Goofs: Troy said that Lauren Cohan's The Walking Dead role was some time after Chuck. However, the first season had already aired but she became a regular on the show in the third season. Time stamps for each Season. Season 1 (0:00 – 46:34) Season 2 (46:34 – 1:18:52) Season 3 (1:18:52 – 1:37:54) Season 4 (1:37:54 - 1:53:03) Season 5 (1:53:03 – 2:13:23) Intro/Outro music by friend of the podcast Seth Gilbertson. The AMPire Diaries Episode 17: “By the Light of the Moon” | “The Descent” Hey, hey, hey, AMPies! Moving along on this Vampire Diaries rewatch-slash-first-time watch (and mostly spoiler-free) combination podcast, we're talking about “By the Light of the Moon” (Season 2, Episode 11) and “The Descent” (Season 2, Episode 12). We get quite rowdy in this episode, and this week, we're talking: - Jill's #1 boy, Tyler Lockwood. - The years in which cast members were born. - Jill's #1 boy, Tyler Lockwood. - Elijah saying “hey.” - Lauren Cohan… good at acting? (Yes.) - The Trevino Train vs. The Roerig… Rickshaw - Jill's #1 boy, Tyler Lockwood. - 'Dana Is The New Tiki.' - Woof Gang. - The Florida Truck. - And of course, Jill's #1 boy, Tyler Lockwood. Also, stick around for a post-credits scene—if you want to hear more from resident boy, Michael Chasin (@MichaelChasin), that is. “TYLER FACES HIS FIRST TRANSFORMATION” (“By the Light of the Moon”) “DOOM, GLOOM AND PERSONAL GROWTH” (“The Descent”) The more AMPED logline this time around? The logline for “The Descent” totally just steals a line of dialogue from Damon… and for that, we are reminded that cheaters always win. “The Descent” wins this week.
