Singer skrev sina berättelser på jiddisch, men oftast publicerades de bara som följetonger i jiddischtidningar och tidskrifter, som amerikanska Forverts, The Forward. Så även Sonim. Tills nu! Sedan 1970-talet har såväl engelsk- som svensktalande kunnat läsa om Herman Broder i New York och hans tragikomiska kvinnobekymmer. Nobelpristagaren Isaac Bashevis Singers roman har översatts till en mängd språk. Nu har ett litet lundaförlag gett ut den i bokform också på originalspråk. Fast den är uppdaterad till en modern, standardiserad jiddisch. Thomas Lunderquist har talat om Singer och hans roman med Singer-experten Jan Schwarz, jiddischlektor vid Lunds universitet.

Författaren Sholem Aleichem dog för hundra år sen i år. Jan Schwarz har varit på en konferens om honom i Jerusalem. Jiddisch är inte bara en kvarlämning från ett förgånget judiskt Östeuropa. Det är också ett språk genom vilket den judiska erfarenheten rört sig från tradition till modernitet. ”Tradizie” och modernitet är ett vanligt tema hos författaren bakom musikalen Spelman på taket: Sholem Aleichem, som dog för hundra år sen i år.Thomas Lunderquist träffar jiddischforskaren Jan Schwarz.
