Chris was a winner of the Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2018 Award in New York and in his spare time he works closely with the Cancer Center at Atlantic Health System in New Jersey.Chris currently lives in New Jersey with his wife and children.Untuckit's Origin and Chris Riccobono's Journey: Chris Riccobono, the co-founder of Untuckit, started the company with the idea of creating a shirt designed to be worn untucked, addressing a common problem in men's fashion. The concept emerged from Chris's frustration with traditional shirts being too long, and he decided to venture into the fashion industry despite having no prior experience in the field.Struggles and Early Challenges: Untuckit faced initial challenges, including the difficulty of finding the right shirt length and manufacturing issues. They encountered setbacks like shirts shrinking and buttons unraveling. Chris and his partner struggled to make a quality product and initially had limited resources, raising a modest amount of money to launch the brand.Marketing Strategies and Growth: Untuckit adopted unconventional marketing strategies, such as radio ads and airline ads, to promote their unique product. The tagline "shirts designed to be worn untucked" resonated well with the audience. Despite the slow initial growth, Untuckit's brand strength and customer satisfaction led to significant success, with a focus on brick-and-mortar stores alongside online presence.Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic: The podcast covers the unexpected challenges Untuckit faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company went from a position of rapid growth to considering bankruptcy within a few months. Chris highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability in overcoming the challenges posed by the pandemic, which significantly impacted the fashion industry.Current and Future Plans: Despite the challenges, Untuckit managed to survive and adapt. Chris discusses their recovery strategy, including negotiating with landlords and factories, raising debt, and ultimately becoming profitable again. Untuckit is optimistic about the future, planning to open 20-25 stores, exploring international markets, and diversifying into wholesale. The company aims to continue its growth trajectory and capitalize on its brand strength.Efficient Store Strategy: Chris emphasizes the importance of efficient store design and operations. He prefers stores in the range of 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, with a focus on cost-effective buildouts. The goal is to provide a productive and efficient shopping experience.Move Away from Large, Expensive Stores: Chris challenges the traditional approach of large, aesthetically pleasing stores, citing the inefficiency and high costs associated with them. He believes in smaller, more cost-effective stores that prioritize customer experience and efficiency.Acquiring Customers Through Stores: Chris sees brick-and-mortar stores as crucial for acquiring customers and marketing. He views them as billboards and advocates for cost-effective store openings, even if they generate less revenue per store.Brand Ambassadors for Credibility: Discussing marketing strategies, Chris highlights the use of brand ambassadors for credibility, even though he acknowledges the challenges in directly measuring their impact. He mentions having ambassadors like Drew Brees and Wayne Gretzky, who were also investors in the brand.Importance of Brick-and-Mortar Despite E-commerce: Contrary to the belief that brick-and-mortar retail is diminishing, Chris argues that it remains an essential and enduring part of the shopping experience for the majority of people. He believes in thecontinued importance of physical stores for various activities and social interactions.Changes in Raising Capital: Chris mentions that the landscape for raising capital has changed, especially post-COVID. Investors are now more cautious and won't engage unless a company is profitable. The era of overvaluing companies without profitability seems to be over, and investors are looking for sustainable business models.Challenges for New Companies: According to Chris, it's currently challenging for new companies, especially pre-revenue ones, to raise money. The competitive environment and caution among investors make it difficult for new brands to secure funding. He emphasizes the importance of having a strong brand and being cautious with spending.Lessons Learned and Advice: Chris reflects on lessons learned from his entrepreneurial journey. He advises being more relaxed and enjoying the challenges. Additionally, he stresses the importance of discipline in spending, citing examples from Untuck It where they were frugal and avoided overspending. Chris also highlights the significance of preserving capital and finding ways to hang around, emphasizing the long-term game for success.

For Part 2 of Episode 16 on the Pursuit of Health Podcast, we now continue the engaging conversation with physician mentor, leader and pioneer - Dr. Tyree Winters. Dr. Winters now serves as the Residency Program and Medical Student Clerkship Director, General Pediatric Residency, as well as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead Physician (Dept. of Pediatrics) at Goryeb Hospital of the Atlantic Health System. Amongst his myriad activities, he is also known for his energetic and engaging work as Dr. Tye the Hip Op Doc to tackle obesity and improve cardiovascular fitness for his followers. He is a cofounder of the ongoing Tour for Diversity in Medicine. Dr. Winters explains that his consistent calling to provide healthcare in underserved areas. He gives a clear account of the problems he sees - magnified by te Covid-19 pandemic - including the multifactorial causes of the Widening Health Disparities aggravated by lack of physician availability in communities of color. He shares his optimism for the future emboldened by communities of color stepping up to make change and have their voices heard - especially through the all important right to vote. He emphasizes that the pandemic has further heightened the often overlooked reality that we are all interdependent and must care for each other. As he has done in writing and through countless educational talks, he offers our audience some very poignant advice on How to Battle Racism in Healthcare. Dr. Winters and Dr. Fethke reflect on the role of the Affordable Care Act as an imperfect start to achieving healthcare equity, though much remains to be done in this regard. They both agree that physicians need to return to the table to bring back the Art of Medicine which has sadly been overwhelmed by the Business of Medicine. Dr. Winters provides an honest reflection on the Innate Biases we all have as human beings tackling issues including racism in healthcare. He shares an insight into the complexity of thought within the U.S. Black Community which he believes has been well depicted by Eugene Robinson's book - Disintegration. We round out our amazing session with Dr. Winter's account of his collaboration with other physician leaders to create the still active Tour for Diversity in Medicine started in 2012. You can follow Dr. Eric Fethke on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok @drfethkemd. (This episode will also be available in video format on Youtube @drfethkemd.)
For this episode of the Pursuit of Health podcast we now return back to the U.S. shores from our prior journey to South Africa. We were fortunate to sit down with a wonderful physician mentor, leader and pioneer in his own right - Dr. Tyree Winters. Dr. Winters began his medical career with the foundation of a BA degree in Psychology at the University of Michigan. He then completed his medical school education at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and his pediatric training at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio. He now serves as the Residency Program and Medical Student Clerkship Director, General Pediatric Residency, Goryeb Children's Hospital at Atlantic Health System, and most recently the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead Physician, Dept of Pediatrics, Goryeb Hospital. Amongst his myriad activities he is also known for his energetic and engaging work as Dr. Tye the Hip Op Doc to tackle obesity and improve cardiovascular fitness for his followers. On this Part 1 of a two part Episode 16 Dr. Winters takes a look back at the people who influenced his career choice to become a physician after growing up in Detroit in the 1980's and 90's. Applying his Sociology and Psychology skills he paints a clear picture of the socioeconomic dynamics of Detroit at that time which created structural divisions along racial and economic lines. After briefly considering a healthcare career as a pharmacist, he soon returned back to Medicine with the support of an admissions officer who “could see the makings of a physician in me”. As he proceeded through his medical education and early career, his experiences awoke a drive in him to improve equity and diversity in Medicine. Over the years he acknowledges that there has been an awakening in the mainstream of an awareness that the traditional criteria to become a physician has been inappropriately exclusive and restrictive. He explains why there is an urgent need in American society for there to be more inclusiveness in the process that ultimately creates a physician. Dr. Winters finishes this part of our episode together by stressing the important role of empathy as a bridge to the experiences of others that ultimately leads to improved diversity and equity in all facets of our society, including the health profession. This approach has become the foundation of his lifelong efforts to focus back on serving the healthcare needs of the underserved communities segregated by color, gender preference and poverty. Join us next time for the final Part 2 of this episode as Dr. Winters shares his work in medical education, administration, patient care and a wonderful outreach program that spans the nation. You can follow Dr. Eric Fethke on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok @drfethkemd. (This episode will also be available in video format on Youtube @drfethkemd.)

Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician
Welcome to Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing for the second time my friend and former colleague. Dr. Karen Knops is a Palliative Care Physician and the creator of programs designed to improve communication in medicine. Her work is deeply influenced by her own experiences as a young patient. After receiving her medical degree in Internal Medicine and completing her Fellowship in Palliative Care, she went on to create and lead the Division of Palliative and Supportive Care for a six hundred bed community teaching hospital as part of the Atlantic Health System, also creating an onsite training program for physicians from multiple specialties, nurse practitioners, and physician's assistant's. Karen has been recognized as “Top Doctor” in Palliative Medicine in both New Jersey and in the Seattle area where she now lives. Her models for communication and understanding patient perspective have been published and shared nationally and internationally. She is a passionate advocate for improving patient experience, and compassion in healthcare. As always, Dr. Orsini keeps his promise about two things, that you will feel inspired, and you will have learned valuable lessons to be a better and more compassionate communicator. One of the biggest problems we have in medicine right now is poor communication between doctors and patients. Effective communication can predict malpractice, prevent medical errors and improve the overall patient experience. Dr, Knops discusses how during her medical training, she realized how hard it was to learn communication skills. She tells us more about the approach she used to help herself. Dr. Knops later developed a communication framework for patients and providers called A-S-C-E-N-D, and she tells us all about it, what it means, and how it can help you patients and doctors. Dr. Orsini and Karen discuss the differences between older generations and Millennials with respect to how they communicate. We end with a communication tip and a great story from Dr. Orsini. if you are an attending physician and you're teaching residents, Dr. Knops leaves us with some great advice about “honoring the role.” If you enjoyed this podcast, please go ahead and hit subscribe on your favorite podcast platform.
