Things continue to take a turn for the worst, as JC Ramirez becomes the latest rotation casualty for the Angels, done for the season with a torn UCL that will need Tommy John surgery. All hope is not lost, however, and there is still some depth left to withstand a tough start to the season health-wise. As Ramirez joins Matt Shoemaker on the disabled list, Andrew Heaney is reportedly close to his return, perhaps slated to start on the mound on Thursday in Kansas City. If Heaney can come back fully healthy and ready to go, the Angels have 7 capable arms for 6 slots in the rotation. Not phenomenal, but still promising moving forward if everyone stays healthy. Of course, health questions continue to plague seemingly every starting pitcher in the organization. Not all hope is lost, and Tuesday means the Down on the Farm report here on the show. Today, Brent Maguire of Prospects 1500 and Baseball Essential joins the show to provide updates on some notable prospects in the Halo system after the first weekend in Minor League Baseball. Griffin Canning looked solid in his first start, while Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh figure to light up the Low-A level with Burlington. All of that, and more, with Brent Maguire. Lastly, we recap Game 1 of the series in Arlington, a Halo victory, and give a quick preview ahead of Game 2. Tune in! We are running out of words to describe what Shohei Ohtani is doing to start the 2018 season. In the Angels' first 10 games, Shohei Ohtani has homered 3 times in 3 consecutive games and picked up 2 wins on the mound in back-to-back starts. Facing the Oakland A's for the 2nd time this season, Ohtani made one of the top offenses in the American League look absolutely foolish at the plate, racking up 12 strikeouts against just 1 walk, while surrendering just 1 base hit. His fastball again touched 100 mph, while his splitter dove beneath bats like they were allergic to the pitch. Time and time again, Ohtani broke off that splitter for swinging strikes, compiling 24 swings and misses on the day, the most in baseball for any pitcher in a start this season. Where Ohtani goes from here, we do not know. But we can certainly confirm, Shohei Ohtani is unlike anyone on this planet. Later in the show, it's the Studs & Duds of the Weekend, highlighting the weekend in Halos baseball. Justin Upton racked up 2 home runs and plenty of RBI's, boosting the offense through 3 games. The starting rotation, outside of Shohei Ohtani, continues to disappoint, with JC Ramirez joining Matt Shoemaker and Andrew Heaney on the disabled list. Is it time to look elsewhere for rotation help. Lastly, we finish with a series preview, as the Angels get set to take on another AL West rival this week, the Texas Rangers. Tune in! Just our second week here on Locked On Angels and we have another awesome guest, as Jeff Fletcher from the Orange County Register joins the podcast to chat about the Angels' pitching staff and how they are shaping up for far this spring. As the Angels Beat reporter for the OC Register, no one is more locked in to the clubhouse than Fletcher, and he shares his insights into the team's construction of the proposed six man rotation. Can Garrett Richards stay healthy and be the upper echelon starter the Angels need? Which of Matt Shoemaker, Tyler Skaggs, and Andrew Heaney will step up to provide support to the dynamic 1-2 punch of Ohtani and Richards? The final spot in the rotation seemingly will come down to Parker Bridwell, JC Ramirez, or Nick Tropeano providing a hybrid starter role to the previous five. With Ramirez out of minor league options, he seems destined for a long relief role in the bullpen, while Bridwell and Tropeano could have to get comfortable switching from Anaheim and Salt Lake City.Lastly, we cover the bullpen and if anyone can challenge Blake Parker for the closer role. What under-the-radar guys this spring have already impressed the coaching staff to possibly earn a spot in the bullpen come Opening Day? As always, be sure to follow us on Twitter @LockedOnAngels or shoot us an email at lockedonangels@gmail.com. Mike Scioscia discusses JC Ramirez's outing in a 7-1 loss to the Tigers.
The DFSR guys break down a shorter Thursday slate of MLB for FanDuel and DraftKings. It’s an interesting night with some name pitchers in some less than exciting matchups. The guys discuss whether you can roster a guy like Michael Pineda in cash games facing a good Astros’ team in Yankee Stadium. They also break down Gerrit Cole, Zack Greinke, Marco Estrada and even talk a little JC Ramirez and Derek Holland. On the offensive side of things the cash game stacking options actually look fairly clear cut. First they talk about the game in Coors and whether you can target both sides of the ball there. And then they look at a couple of cheaper teams in the Rangers and Blue Jays coming in good spots. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
