TCW Podcast Episode 259 - A Cendant to Vivendi   CUC International looked like a company that never missed. Quarter after quarter, just barely beating estimates, right up until the moment Henry Silverman got access to their books and found out why. When a new customer signed up, CUC booked a full year of revenue immediately, even though billing was monthly. If that customer left before the year was up, CUC never corrected the books. The money just stayed there. Perfectly functional assets were declared worthless on paper, with the supposed losses paid off using money from merger funds. That same merger money was then counted again as incoming revenue, making the company look larger and more profitable than it was. Over $500 million in income that never existed. Walter Forbes was forced to resign and was eventually convicted of the largest accounting scandal of the time. Cendant realized the software and games division itself had been part of the machinery. They sold it to French media company Havas. That sale landed in the orbit of Vivendi, a sprawling conglomerate that had started as a 19th century French waterworks company. Its CEO Jean-Marie Messier had bigger things in mind. We start off this week's show with a shoutout to much of the Wowhead content team, who were laid off from ZAM. We have a lot of fond memories with them, not to mention their indispensable coverage over the years, and our hosts expressed a bit of consternation at what this move means in a meta sense. But, the show must go on, and time marches on, including the new Sporefall raid we'll be seeing in WoW patch 12.0.7, and new Timewalking rewards, both of which includes lot of neat transmog.We're also chatting Diablo 4 and its weirdly short events, including an upcoming event to celebrate Diablo 4's third anniversary. It starts June 2 and lasts just a week like all the others, but at least this time we have enough advance notice to tell you about it on the podcast. It includes a lot of Treasure Goblins and killing of said Treasure Goblins, so it being so short is definitely a big downer. But not as much of a downer as some of the current builds they've discussed, which can crash the game with the sheer number of minions our cohosts are packing.Plus, we bid Destiny 2 adieu, which our cohosts at least briefly tried, because it was on the Battle.net launcher for a while. We kick things off by accidentally introducing the wrong show, arguing about Bonnie Tyler lyrics, and discovering that turning away from the camera reveals a wall-to-wall penny situation nobody knew was there. From there, things get real fast. Spencer is having kind of a rough go of it: missing his ex, stuck on video game programming, smoking too much weed to feel high anymore, but finds unexpected joy in the philosophical similarities between Minecraft and coding. The conversation meanders through THAC0 (the famously cursed old Dungeons & Dragons combat mechanic), the surprisingly cherry-forward nature of Mr. Pibb, Kevin's deeply controversial love of RC Cola, and a Diablo 4-branded Fanta that Spencer considers one of the great sodas of our time. We also wade into the current state of society: the FBI finding reports "credible" while nobody does anything about it, data centers making people on Threads suspicious for reasons that make no sense, the Goonbug mobile game phenomenon and the observation that the American Dream has quietly pivoted from "be a doctor" to "get hit by a truck for a settlement." Spencer also delivers a passionate sermon about labor vs. ideas, and the whole thing wraps up with an AI-generated email reply, a fantastic Hulk Hogan impression, and Spencer encouraging listeners to run him over with their cars as a form of support.
