As a “computer” at Harvard College Observatory, she spent countless hours examining photographic plates of stars, and in doing so discovered a relationship between the brightness and period of Cepheid variable stars. This “Leavitt Law” became the cosmic yardstick that allowed astronomers like Hubble to measure the true scale of the Milky Way and the expansion of the universe. Though she worked in relative obscurity during her lifetime, her insight remains one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology. The Elephant in the Universe: 100-year search for dark matter Author: Govert Schilling Theoretical Stability and Observational Proof of Dark Matter Halos Headline: Galaxies Need Invisible Halos: Ostriker and Rubin Provide Evidence In the late 1960s, theorist Jeremiah Ostriker calculated that a flattened galaxy like the Milky Way could not remain stable without a large, spherical "halo" of unseen matter surrounding it, providing a theoretical basis for dark matter. This theoretical need was then powerfully confirmed by the observational work of American astronomer Vera Rubin and her colleague Kent Ford throughout the 1970s. Studying distant galaxies, including Andromeda, they discovered that stars on the outer edges rotated at unexpectedly high, constant velocities, rather than slowing down as predicted. This "flattening the curve" of rotational velocities offered the first concrete proof for the existence of dark matter, whose gravity was necessary to prevent galaxies from flying apart. 1958

In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sat down with Matt Dawes, Head of Enterprise Sales at HALOS, to explore the fast-moving world of security technology and how body-worn cameras are rapidly transforming the way businesses approach accountability, staff safety, and incident response. HALOS is rethinking body-worn video with a fresh approach that doesn't stop at hardware. From their subscription-based service model to a real-time AI-powered backend system, their tech stack is designed to meet the growing demands of both frontline teams and the organizations supporting them. During our conversation, Matt shared how the company's origins during the COVID-19 period shaped its purpose and culture and how it has scaled across the UK, Ireland, and the US following its Series A funding in early 2024. We explored how HALOS uses AI for proactive threat detection and fall detection, which is still under development, and how their cloud-based platform, Bolt, plays a critical role in evidence management and seamless integration with broader security ecosystems. Matt also shared insights into how their system is already making an impact in sectors such as retail, where the focus isn't solely on theft prevention but also on ensuring frontline workers feel supported and protected against a backdrop of increasing aggression and workplace incidents. One of the standout aspects of the conversation was HALOS' pricing model, which offers all features, including panic alerts and live streaming, under one monthly subscription. This structure eliminates the hidden costs that often hinder full deployment, allowing clients to scale their coverage without compromise. So, how is the security technology space evolving? What role does AI play in improving situational awareness? And how can tech leaders ensure their investment protects people on the ground? Please tune in to hear how HALOS is positioning itself at the intersection of innovation and frontline security.
The show is back on this Father's Day Sunday, as the Orioles rebounded from a disappointing Detroit series by sweeping the Angels at Camden Yards. Jake and Eric are here to discuss a promising effort from an offense that appears to be on the rebound, some extremely encouraging returns to the lineup from guys like Jordan Westburg and Gary Sanchez, a more aggressive mindset under Tony Mansolino, and much more. Thanks as always for tuning in, and we'll be back at you very soon! Speaking of pop songs, what would you do with a million dollars, YFTer's? Hit us up on the VM's with your thoughts…Brand-eye would head to Patagonia, while Wells would hole up in a secluded cabin in the woods and write the next great American novel and try not to think too much about golf or the aliens living under the pyramids. Yep you heard that right. Lastly, the pair discuss the week's fave things (Adolescence one-takes are blowing our minds right now), how great cold plunges are, and why they probably won't ever understand why people used to literally drink pee to check if you were sick back in Medieval times.
