For our 350th, we have brought in Sam Thompson from Witchpolice Radio, the godfather of Canadian Podcasts. We had to have the best topic to spring on him and we found it. Jered Eames was a musician who had a plan to become famous. Redubbing himself Jered Threatin as a solo artist in 2015, he launched his career with his first single Living Is Dying. And from here, things just got weirder and weirder. With a Go Daddy account and Internet savvy, he created a hype for himself on social media, using dummy record labels, booking companies and management companies, and bought “Likes” on Facebook. We delve into the Eames' transformation in Threatin', the media circus he created for himself and just what happened when his scheming was uncovered. How did an ambitious musician fool thousands of people using social media? Jered Threatin successfully managed to fake an entire existence as a rock star. He persuaded people he was an award-winning musician who had played to sold-out venues. And as a result of his seemingly popular social media accounts and faked web pages, he orchestrated a European tour, got his eponymous band booked in venues across six countries. The BBC’s Jessica Lussenhop got an exclusive interview with Jered Threatin, and she helps tell the story of how he was able to dupe people, how he was uncovered and why his desire for global success has now made him famous – for all the wrong reasons. In November 2018 and LA based band Threatin landed in the UK to begin their first European tour. Their promoter had booked venues in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, new band members had been signed up with the promise of venues that could hold over 1000 people, the online audience was huge and passionately vocal on social media about their love of this brilliant upcoming band. But when they took to the stage, there was no audience to greet them. The illusion of rockstardom burst when it crossed over from online into the offline world. The reality was that the agency, the managers, the fan club, the youtube interviews - all had been manufactured by the band's frontman Jered Threatin. When all was revealed the story went viral across the globe. Jered later claimed that the whole thing a deliberate performance that exposed the problems of fake news in the digital world, and that anyone who had participated was part of the ‘illusion'. Aleks digs into the strange story of a fake tour that ended up with real fame, or at least infamy - asking why we trust what we see online, where the line is drawn between performance, trolling or lies, and finds out the real life consequences for people swept up in an online illusion.

Threatin coverage on MetalSucks: http://www.metalsucks.net/tag/threatin/ Jered Eames, who goes by the stage name Jered Threatin, began Threatin as a solo act after his departure from Abigail Williams. In 2015, Threatin released a single, "Living Is Dying". In 2017, the album Breaking the World was released, with Jered Threatin performing all instruments. In November 2018, Threatin was booked to tour the United Kingdom and Europe having informed venues they had sold hundreds of tickets and had paid the hire fee before each gig. However, the tour achieved widespread news coverage when it became known that the shows had been played to empty rooms. It was later discovered that the 38,000 likes on the band's Facebook page had been bought. It was also found that Threatin created a series of fake websites for a booking agency (StageRight Bookings), a record label (Superlative Music Recordings), a PR company (Magnified Media PR), a music recording studio (Mindframe Studios), a film production company (Glass Castle Film & Photography), and various music press websites (Top Rock Press, New York Music Review, Celebrity Music Scene) in an attempt to give his band credibility and secure the tour, and referenced other made-up companies (Universal Web Group) and bands/artists. Doctored footage of Threatin performing in an arena to audience stock footage was used to produce a promotional video for the European tour. ---- Use coupon code MENTALPOD20 to get $20 off any Outerloop Coaching course - including Breaking In for Musicians and Breaking In For Non-Musicians regularly priced at $21. This is a very special episode as we are joined by our personal long time friend and now horror author Josh Kirk. We get an inside look on what it takes to write a book from the first chapter, to the last, and even the cover. In the news we talk about the Chris Cornell tribute concert and the Biggest Douche of the Year finalist Jered Threatin and his grand illusion (link below). We also review the new Architects album Holy Hell and talk about our top 3 drummers. Huge thanks to Josh Kirk for coming out and talking with us. Another thanks to Psycroptic and Prosthetic Records for letting us use their song Directive in this episode. In the summer of 2018, three musicians - guitarist Joe Prunera, bassist Gavin Carney, and drummer Dane Davis - responded to audition requests from a Los Angeles talent agency. All three ended up joining an up-and-coming band named Threatin, fronted by a mysterious young man calling himself "Jered Threatin." They were hired on to provide Jered a backing band on an upcoming tour, which would take them into Europe during November of 2018. However, as the tour began, these three young men realized that they had signed onto something that was not as it seemed. As the tour progressed, and they realized nobody was coming to see them play, they began to understand that they were witnessing one of the most bizarre stories of the year unfold in real time...
