As I was grabbing my notes from a table on the stage during last weekend's TAXI Road Rally, I overheard a musician talking with a music supervisor who had just finished speaking on a panel. The TAXI member said, “Scan my QR code and it will take you to my linktr.ee that has links to my bio, Soundcloud, Instagram, Facebook, my videos, and a bunch of other stuff.” Without missing a beat, the music supervisor asked, “Why don't you have a website?” Why wouldn't you put all of your music, photos, bio, videos, and social media all in one place? Why make it harder than it needs to be for the people who want to know about you to learn everything they can about you? So, I invited Joseph Longo from Bandzoogle to join us for this week's episode! He was my guest about a year ago, and he was so good at explaining all of this that I called his boss the next day to tell him how what a great job Joseph did! Win a FREE Thirty-Minute Website Consultation with Joseph! I've also asked Joseph if he would give away a consulting session with one of our viewers who either needs feedback on their existing website or wants advice on what their website should feature if they choose to build one.

My guests, Chris Raspante and Jesse Spradlin, are The Vintage Yell. Chris appeared in episode 2 and episode 186 of The Unstarving Musician, which are among the most popular for the podcast. Chris and Jesse joined forces to form The Vintage Yell somewhat recently and have a lot of new music coming soon. You can find their new single "Goin' On Swinging" at TheVintageYell.com. Jesse, Chris and I had a great conversation. I especially enjoyed their discussion of The Vintage Yell launch party and their coming-out strategy. We also discuss working together as a new band, writing and recording new music, release strategy, Mesquite Street Records, and more. On a side note, Chris performed on, recorded and mastered my singles "On Top Of The World" and "New Gods Part 2." You can hear both songs at Robonzo.com. He is a talented guy, as is his new bandmate Jesse Spradlin. Here's me talking with Chris and Jesse of The Vintage Yell. One of the best voices in rock has been used to describe J.R. Richards. He's the original singer of Dishwalla, one of my favorite bands to emerge in the 90s. Richards has sold millions of records, written some chart-topping hits and has toured globally. Perhaps his most noteworthy accomplishment was writing "Counting Blue Cars," which he performed and recorded with Dishwalla. That song won the Billboard "Rock Song of the Year" award in 1996 and two ASCAP awards for "Song of The Year" in 1997 and 1998. Richards has also recorded a few solo albums and is on the cusp of releasing his next album, the 10th in his career. I only recently became acquainted with his solo work because I was looking for an acoustic cover of "Counting Blue Cars" for an acoustic 80s/90s covers project. I found an acoustic version, but when I saw the singer on that acoustic version, it occurred to me that it wasn't the original guy. Down the rabbit hole, I went. I don't know who the new singer is. He's good, but I'm definitely partial to Richards' voice. So I found his solo work, website and lots of other info about him that I never knew. I loved Dishwalla, but I'm not what you'd call a super fan. I lost track of the band after they stopped releasing new stuff. But I am a big fan, so I was stoked when JR agreed to an interview. Speaking with him was kinda weird. The time passed so quickly! I spend most of our time nerding out with him about e-commerce, the importance of email lists and other topics I typically pursue on the podcast. I ended up with several questions that we never got to. The other thing is that he's a 'normal' person, a dad and husband; a very talented normal person, but just a guy. I don't know what I expected, but I enjoyed speaking with him. Richards is as kind and humble as any other indie musician I've ever had on the podcast. We talked about Dishwalla, his forthcoming record, email marketing, e-commerce, touring, adapting to changes in music, Spotify Discovery Mode, SOME of his work as a producer, what he's got cooking in the near future, and more. Find everything JR is up to at JRRrichardsMusic.com. Please enjoy my conversation with JR Richards, the original singer of Dishwalla. Radhika Vekaria's personal and artistic endeavours are a tribute to her namesake — also known as Radha — the Vedic goddess of unconditional love and devotion, and Lord Krishna's greatest devotee. Her Indian, East African, and British roots have found full expression in her music as has the influence of the free-spirited women in her life, her mother and her two grandmothers, and her father, whose passion for classical and devotional Indian music stirred Radhika from infancy. In the present day, as an award winning multi-instrumental sensory artist, Radhika Vekaria channels healing for the future while pulling from traditions of the past. UK born, with ancestry through East Africa, Radhika's music falls between world music and textural soundscapes. Pushing boundaries of how ancient sacred music can be experienced and perceived, Radhika pulls audiences into a space where heart and mind conjoin. Discovering purpose through art, Radhika brings a wealth of live performance to consciousness based music. After gracing stages in Europe with UK and world music artists and singing lead in the hit stage spectacular INDIA INDIA in Germany, she now resides in the United States. Her collaborations with LA based Grammy nominated producer George Landress (No Doubt, Snuffy Walden), Radhika's music are a powerful ode to her Indian roots, featuring ancient Sanskrit mantras, philosophies and storytelling enhanced by striking sound textures from lands touched by her ancestry. Radhika's album ‘SAPTA: The Seven Ways' established her as an innovative sacred music artist. In 2021 Radhika's sessions on the breakthrough audio app Clubhouse attracted over 100,000 listeners. She was then invited as a special guest performer for Roger Love's (America's no. 1 voice coach) Voice of Success conference. In 2022, Radhika became the first mantra artist at SXSW as well as performing the opening ceremony for the Gala for the International Center of Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC) in New York - a global charity saving young children from danger and human trafficking. World renowned artist Jeff Koons featured Radhika's voice alongside those of Rihanna, Sir Paul McCartney and David Bowie for his recent 4 month groundbreaking exhibition 'Apollo' in Greece, with an exploration of the ancient world meeting the new. Radhika has regularly supported organizations like Yoga Gives Back, All Love Kirtan UK, and Art of Living Global events. She has also performed for the likes of His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and Deepak Chopra - singing and speaking passionately about the healing and transformational power of mantra to bring this ancient practice from the Vedic Sciences and its philosophies to new audiences everywhere. Radhika is the chosen voice of Chopra Yoga TT program 2023. Shoshana Shangold (aka Sat Darshan Singh) and I collaborated on "THE MUSIC WITHIN" in 2011. The voice you hear at the end of "Bliss (I Am the Light of My Soul)" is Shoshana's. Listen here: https://youtu.be/qlDmb6Obh0w?si=l3ht4-w1M8STwVGj Let it be known that the words being sung at the end are from ANAND SAHIB. It is a Sikh hymn that is often translated as "Song of Bliss" (hence it's use in the song). Shoshana's new band is called Firebird FM. Alyssa Trahan is the featured artist in this Rewind episode. What's a Rewind episode? It's a previously published episode, one of my favorites and merits re-publishing. I also give these episodes a fresh edit, which means you will find it even more enjoyable from a listening perspective. Nashville based singer songwriter Alyssa Trahan first appeared in episode 18 (2017), which is remarkable because the depth of our conversation rivals anything I've done to date, as do the accomplishments Alyssa had made at her then age of 22. Topics covered in our conversation include why she moved to Nashville from Rochester NY, her latest single (at the time), sound engineering, endorsements, sponsors, crowdfunding, her education, gigs that pay the bills, business and marketing, merch, and the biggest lesson she'd learned to date. Find all things Alyssa Trahan at AlyssaTrahan.com. Please enjoy this conversation with me and Alyssa Trahan. My guest is singer, songwriter, producer Sam J Garfield. He has a new self-produced single out called "Monster." Sam is an actor turned sound engineer and music producer. He's now leaning into songwriting and releasing his own music. Sam is taking a break from a very long stretch of working nonstop. Apparently he was working so to an extent that people around him were concerned. But Sam's young, learning that life's not only about working all the time. He also seems to be learning a lot about himself. He shares a lot of reflection and introspection, and I think he's working things out. We also talk about his new song "Monsters," finding therapy in Monsters (the single), getting started as a sound engineer, how to he attracts opportunity as a producer, and more. My favorite part of our conversation is toward the end, where he tells me how he attracts opportunities as a producer. He's young, yet old-school. This part of our conversation serves as a great reminder that old-school works. Find all things Sam J Garfield on Instagram @SamJGarfield. It was on a swing set in the 5th grade that Joe was deciding whether to be an artist or a musician. He chose art. Years later, after art school and studying with master painters, he found himself in the field of video games. He excelled in many roles such as animator, 3d modeler, texture artist, graphic designer, illustrator and concept artist. He spent roughly 30 years in a field he never felt like he belonged in. There was no true passion for video games nor the popular culture they represented for him. But along the way, he continued to study traditional mediums, painting from both life and his imagination, seeing both as equally important skills. Joe also had immense interest in the more esoteric areas of psychology and personal development. He has studied many forms and disciplines of meditation, adopting and adapting from various styles and types he learned in meditation retreats and courses on his journey of self discovery. With the help of various plant medicines, he recovered from both childhood and adult traumas. Joe has always been willing and able to dive deep. With breakthroughs in limiting beliefs, Joe's view is that one has to change and grow beyond the confines of culture and the validation of those around you. The balance of peace and tranquility in his life is the starting point. Creating from an open heart and expanded mind, Joe's approach is to paint as unguarded as he is able. This is the place he chooses to create from. Tactful color harmony, composition, and mindful brushwork are the tools he uses to create evocative and atmospheric paintings that edge on the divine. Whether it's surrealistic, impressionistic, or psychedelic, his visionary, colorful work is full of the love of himself, others and all that is. In the end, his desire is that the awareness and love he brings to his paintings sparks you to see yourself and life in a new way. Growing up in two worlds, within an Indian - Trinidadian family in Canada, Rishima began singing spiritual Indian songs in the temple traditions of bhajans, kirtan and other devotional styles at a young age. She went on to study classical Raga within the traditional gharana system of instruction, often staying at her spiritual guru's ashram to listen to lectures, sing, and engage in spiritual practices. In 2016, her world was changed by the discovery of Dhrupad, an ancient, meditative style of Indian classical singing that originated from the Sama Veda. This led her to a deep connection with Nāda Yoga—the Yoga of Sound. Her goal as a teacher is to make the intricacies and beauty of classical Raga and traditional bhajans accessible to all, and to spark love within ourselves through sound. My guest Ariane Paras is a coach for music artists and industry professionals. After working in the music business for 15 years, and as a result of a lot of stress, late nights (and way too many hangovers), Ariane says she is very aware of the realities of the industry behind the scenes. Witnessing the work-hard/party-hard lifestyle and watching so many artists and colleagues struggle or burnout, she decided she wanted to help change things. Her way of helping was to create coaching programs that help music artists and industry professionals feel clear, balanced, and confident about themselves and their future. Ariane says she always wanted to work in the music industry and has, in dream jobs, working for British labels and programming the Razzmatazz club in Barcelona. She supposes life looked like a big party from the outside and that she ought to be happy. Her work actually lead to chronic exhaustion, dissatisfaction, quitting jobs, relocating twice, and eventual professional crisis. Then she became highly interested in personal development, eventually committing to her own self-work. Ariane has trained with the Coaches Training Institute to become a life coach so she could help others on their journeys. On a somewhat personal note, Ariane is a self-admitted big fan of Phil Collins (so am I). We talk about this, that dream-jobs don't equal happiness, burnout, and the importance of finding joy, confidence, and happiness. Learn more about Ariane at Olympiacoaching.com and on Instagram @olympiacoaching. My guest today is Jai Uttal! Jai Uttal is a grammy nominee, kirtan artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist. He is considered a pioneer in the world music community with his combined influences from India and American rock and jazz. Jai has been leading, teaching, and performing World Music and kirtan—the ancient yoga of chanting or singing to God—around the world for close to 50 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices. He grew up in New York City and lived in a home filled with music. Jai began studying classical piano at the age of seven, and later learned to play old-time banjo, harmonica, and guitar. At age 17, he heard Indian music for the first time, and two years later moved to California and studied under the famous sarod player, Ali Akbar Khan. Jai later began taking regular pilgrimages to India, living among the wandering street musicians of Bengal, and singing with the kirtan wallahs in the temple of his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Jai has emerged as a leading influence in the Bhakti tradition. He considers bhakti to be the core of his musical and spiritual life. Julieta Heredia is a founding member and guitarist of Fin del Mundo. The band is from Buenos Aires, with roots in the southernmost region of Patagonia. The music of Fin del Mundo uses melodies, lyrics, and instrumental passages to combine indie sounds with nuances of emotional post-rock. Their first songs were released in April 2020 and became the soundtrack for their days in isolation (the pandemic lockdown). The band says their second release explores directions that prove the "end of the world" is also the beginning of a new stage. In this conversation, Julieta shares memories of her youth, the start-up of Fin del Mundo, the YouTube performance that's taking the band to new heights, the evolution of their live shows, post-pandemic release promotion, bigger shows ahead, the messages of their music, and the band's writing process. Fin del Mundo appears to be riding a new wave of music. I hope you'll support them by following and buying their music so they can make their way to North America soon. This episode is all about SAFETY & SACRED DESIRE. Feeling safe and feeling worthy are two very important components of having an enjoyable life. Find out why in this podcast. Today, Porter Singer & Songs of Eden release "Safe & Sound" into the world -- a song that was inspired by the Inner Child & Beyond Oracle Deck created by Nina Mongendre and EdieArt. In the sixth & seventh (combined) episode of this 10-episode series, Porter, Nina, and Edie, will discuss the SACRED DESIRE and SAFETY cards, which inspired "Yes!" and "Safe & Sound" (respectively). Nina has B.A. from Brown University (like Porter!). She is trained in Family Constellations (with Marine Selenee and Jack Blackwell) and Inherited Family Trauma (with Mark Wolynn). She is a certified Neuro-Emotional Coach with the Center for Emotional Education, a Certified Hypno-Constellations Practitioner, and a Certified Shamanic Energy Medicine Practitioner with the Four Winds Institute. Edie's words about her art: The process of painting as with music is about flow. Of not believing that mistakes exist. Any move is part of the whole and the creation. It requires a great amount of trust. And diligent work/practice! Art in whichever form is a daily practice for me most of the time. I absolutely love it. My guest in this episode is alternative/nu-punk artist Krosst Out. His latest song, This The New Shit, drops on May 12th, 2023. The single is the first of many to come from rap-rocker Krosst Out with the announcement of his forthcoming album I Had A Dream I Didn't Have Eyes. The first time we spoke was in March 2018, when Krosst Out had recently released his first album. That conversation was for Unstarving Musician episode 43. Today K.O. claims he's grown as a songwriter, performer, and music artist. He also says his latest release is the perfect introductory track to his new sound and a new era in his music. We talk about this, his new sound, collaborations and his collaboration wishlist, introspection of his lyrics, tour plans, rethinking the music business, unconventional release strategy, and more. Today, Porter Singer & Songs of Eden release "My Life Is Gold" into the world -- a song that was inspired by the Inner Child & Beyond Oracle Deck created by Nina Mongendre and EdieArt. In the third of this 10-episode series, Porter, Nina, and Edie, will discuss the ALCHEMY CARD, which inspired "My Life Is Gold." Nina has B.A. from Brown University (like Porter!).
