Our final show for 2025 is the #1 Pearl Jam show of the year voted on by the listeners, and of course it can't be anything other than the tour closer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Unbeknownst to us, this would be the final show of Matt Cameron's 27-year tenure in Pearl Jam, and although it wasn't announced until two months later, there are enough subtle hints in this show that are clearer from hindsight's perspective - the champagne toast, the hugs and even t-shirts worn by Mike and Jeff are some signals that you can tell the band knows what's going on. But there is also references to this show being the end of the Dark Matter run that only got one full calendar year of touring. While Matt Cameron is the storyline that we didn't know at the time, it was his former Soundgarden bandmate, Chris Cornell, that was the major storyline heading into this show. May 18th this year was the anniversary of Cornell's death, something that the band has been hesitant to address at shows due to the nature of the subject. Going back to that date last year, there was a show in Vegas that did not reference him outside of a shirt that Cameron wore. After telling a story about him at Fenway Park last year and performing Hunger Strike in Australia, it seemed that the band was ready to pay tribute to the man they called a bandmate and brother. Aaron Nichols grew up in Bakersfield where his hardworking single mom juggled long hospital shifts and cleaning jobs to support him and his brothers. Music sparked early when he would secretly play his older brother's electric guitar, and by age 13 was excelling in lessons that his mom made possible. Years later, he reconnected with his childhood crush Felisha - they're now happily married with a young son, Jack, who cheers him on. Aaron moved to San Diego in 2013, playing local wedding and party bands while singing harmonies in church. The passing of his favorite singer, Chris Cornell, inspired him to explore his own voice, eventually booking gigs as a lead singer. They have been eligible to be in the rock ‘n' roll Hall of Fame for decades and now eight years after Chris Cornell‘s death in 2017, Soundgarden will be inducted into the rock ‘n' roll Hall of Fame. I wanted to highlight this moment to say how bittersweet it is because Chris Cornell is no longer with us that this band that I loved from the time I was 13 to now is finally getting inducted into an institution that they loved.From their times, singing, loud love to outshined and black hole sun, this band with his bombastic singer who really put Robert Plant in his place vocally gave us this very metal band.They were together from 1984 until 1997 and then in 2012 they put out an album years in the making and this beautiful reunion took place. As I write this, Soundgarden are in the process of releasing the final album they were making with Chris Cornell and when it sees a light of day, we will all listen to it with this feeling of how beautiful the music was when he was alive.To the 13-year-old me in 1994 man Soundgarden got you through a lot and here I am 44 saying I revere this band in such a way that's it rivals Nirvana and Pearl Jam.Because nobody hooked me at 13 like Soundgarden did with that video for black hole sun And tonight I honor Soundgarden and their late front man Chris Cornell!

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys from different generations who've collided with big riffs in recent years: Tom Morello and Jordan Benjamin. Tom Morello is best known as the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, which smashed together heavy music and activism in the 1990s, inspiring countless bands—some good, some bad, as he'll freely admit—to sprinkle some hip-hop into their rock. Morello went on to form Audioslave with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and find a whole other area of success, but he didn't stop there: Morello goes wherever the muse takes him, from playing with Bruce Springsteen to doing acoustic sets as The Nightwatchman. He's always working on new music—and always outspoken politically. Morello tapped Jordan Benjamin to contribute to his 2021 single “Hold the Line,” which makes perfect sense, because the music that Benjamin records under the name Grandson is certainly inspired by Rage, among other artists of course. Grandson has been releasing records for the past decade or so, fusing hip-hop and alt-rock elements with unabashedly political lyrics. For his latest album under the Grandson name, Inertia, Benjamin leaned into a more organic rather than electronic sound—you'll hear him talk about the transition in this chat.
