On May 29, 1997, Jeff Buckley drowned in Wolf River, Memphis, Tennessee, just as he was preparing to record the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut album, Grace. He was only 30 years old. In the time since his tragic death, his legacy has only grown, and the music remains a unique testament to his singular voice and songwriting talent. Director Amy Berg (West of Memphis, Janis: Little Girl Blue), talks to us about her moving and emotional new documentary It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley, which has its theatrical debut this week. What the Riff!?! has finished covering every month from January 1965 to December 1994, and we are thrilled that you have listened with us as we review the great bands, songs, and happenings of this 30-year time span. In this episode, we bring back Brian Dickhute, one of our co-founders of the podcast, and review what we have learned, experienced, and enjoyed about this period of songs and podcast. We also feature a number of songs that were either missed in our coverage of the times, or that were important to us individually.Eruption by Van HalenWayne brings us this instrumental by Eddie Van Halen that announced the start of the Van Halen band on their first album.Long Live Rock by the WhoWayne's favorite group wrote this anthem to the genre.Black Hole Sun by SoundgardenLynch features a song that front man Chris Cornell wrote in about 15 minutes, inspired by a misheard statement from a TV weatherman.Creeping Death by MetallicaLynch brings us the first and only commercial single from Metallica's second album, "Ride the Lightning."Closer to the Heart by RushOf course Bruce is going to feature Rush in this last episode, in this case an anthem encouraging all to strive to live closer to the heart.Ridin' the Storm Out by REO SpeedwagonBruce thinks this song should have been featured earlier, and notes that the live version is much better than the studio set. Mother by Pink FloydOne of Brian's favorite groups, this song is selected from "The Wall" album, chronicling Pink's descent into madness. Going to California by Led ZeppelinBrian's second selection this week is a ballad off the legendary fourth album, a song originally inspired by earthquakes in California. The One Thing by INXSRob's selection is the introduction most Americans had to this Australian band in 1982, and one of his favorite songs.Mr. Blue Sky by ELORob finishes off this celebration with one of the happiest rock songs you will hear, one he wants played at his funeral. This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

Keaton SimonsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Keaton Simons. Keaton has been a Hollywood fixture in the music & film industry since he was a little kid. Keaton's parents, and grandparents have been in the film & television business for decades. His grandfather was a screenwriter for some of the most decorated & loved films in history, and his parents have both starred in & written some of the most beloved projects in the business. Keaton started off singing and acting in projects as a small child and quickly fell in love with playing music. In this episode, Keaton and I chat about his early years and some of those early projects. We then transition into his diving into the music scene. I ask him about his moving to Nashville, and some of the projects he has worked on as a musician. Keaton has played with some of the biggest names in music, like: Snoop Dogg, Danny Elfman, Jason Mraz, Pharcyde, Darryl McDaniels, Chris Cornell, Gnarles Barkley, and is currently the lead guitarist for Brett Young. I ask him about each of these projects, and Keaton shares fun stories of working with these music icons. Keaton explains what a musical director is and how he has been able to translate artists' musical ideas, into fully realized products. Naturally we talk about why some of the biggest musical stars of today are moving to Nashville, and what that city has to offer artists in the local the music scene. He even lets me play one of the songs he & Jason Mraz co-wrote! Keaton is currently on a world tour with country music showman Brett Young. If they are playing near you, you won't want to miss them!

On this episode, Mark Radulich, Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, and Mik Wanamaker dive deep into the fuzzy, funk-laced world of Crobot! We kick things off with a blast of industrial groove from White Zombie, then take a quick stroll through Crobot's history—where they came from, what they sound like, and how they carved out their niche in modern rock. From there, it's on to their breakout hit “Low Life”, a full review of their latest album Obsidian, and a look at how it stacks up against past efforts like Welcome to Fat City.We also take a moment to reflect on key events from May 18th in metal history, including the passing of Chris Cornell and the legacy of Blind Guardian, Soulfly, and HammerFall. And because this is MHOD, you know it wouldn't be complete without a bit of black metal nonsense from Immortal, a detour into OnlyFans coaching, and a punchy closer from Five Finger Death Punch.Plug in and turn it up—this one's got riffs, laughs, and just enough chaos to keep it interesting.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.White Zombie - More Human Than Humanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0E0ynyIUsgCrobot - "Low Life" Official Music Video (MOTHERBRAIN)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPi_SaFsMf8Crobot - Nothing (Official Music Video)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CKT3LXQKec&list=PLVPMBFr-dNGWxLvdFACIxmCLaMKnq0Q0B&index=15Immortal - Call Of The Wintermoonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VBdAY8eA9wFive Finger Death Punch - Jekyll And Hydehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCBPmxiVMKkMik Wanamakers Onlyfans: https://onlyfans.com/asirencreatesMark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Madonna gets a mention when it comes to bass players and why she should work once again with the incredible talent that is Meshell Ndegeocello. In this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive deep into the just-announced 2025 Class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With their usual mix of thoughtful analysis, historical insight, and a healthy dose of nerdy passion, the duo breaks down the list of official inductees and shares their thoughts on what each artist or contributor brings to the legacy of rock and popular music. The conversation kicks off with a celebration of long-overdue recognition, as they discuss the inclusion of Bad Company, Joe Cocker, and the energetic pioneer Chubby Checker. They reflect on the vocal power and emotional resonance of Cocker's performances, the timeless grooves of Bad Company, and Checker's role in shaping early rock dance culture.Next up, they shift to iconic voices and game-changers of the '80s and '90s. Cyndi Lauper and Salt N Pepa spark discussion on pop's evolution and hip-hop's expanding influence on the Rock Hall. OutKast's induction offers a springboard into the genre-defying brilliance of André 3000 and Big Boi, while Soundgarden's inclusion brings a reflective moment on grunge, Chris Cornell's legacy, and the band's impact on alternative rock. The duo also delves into the raw garage rock revivalism of The White Stripes and the poetic lyricism of cult-favorite Warren Zevon, dissecting how both acts carved unique paths in music history. Their conversation highlights how the Hall is slowly broadening its definition of rock — and why that matters.Beyond the performers, Professor Aubrey and Tim celebrate the often unsung heroes of music with the inductions of Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins, Carol Kaye, and Lenny Waronker. From Bell's lush Philadelphia soul arrangements to Kaye's legendary bass lines, they shine a spotlight on the behind-the-scenes talent that shaped the sound of generations. To close out the episode, the hosts revisit their predictions from Episode 401, where they each chose who they believed should be inducted this year. With the full 2025 class revealed, the friendly rivalry comes to a head as they tally up their correct picks. Who had the better crystal ball? Tune in to find out!As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. This episode marks the end of The Cobain 50 and El Cancionero de Kurt. After going through all 50 albums from Kurt’s list, we celebrated with an event in KEXP’s Gathering Space with a packed house of fans of Nirvana and the podcast to reflect on the series, what it’s meant to us, and what we’ve learned going through all of this music. Below find translations of the Spanish and Portuguese clips aired throughout the episode. Thank you to everyone who has supported our podcasts. We love you so much, it makes us sick. CLIP #1: Luis Carlos Calanca: “Maybe it made him explode, again in Brazil and worldwide it was Kurt Cobain when the band Nirvana came here. Months later, when Kurt Cobain saw them here, he started saying that the band was sensational. And then all the kids wanted to know about Os Mutantes. Lucinha Barbosa: “That’s how, word of mouth, I think, until '98, the big ones started to pay attention because there was no one to stay, no major record company that advertised didn't have that exactly through the fans themselves, word by word.” CLIP #2: José Bellas: Yes, that's right. The next day interviews were scheduled. I had to interview Dave Grohl. and I spent some time before the show at the house of one… one of the two managers of Los Brujos that was Alejandro Almada and he gave me a record for them. I took it there and I gave it to him (Dave). Anyway, another thing that was going around was that, during Los Brujos' soundcheck, Grohl showed up and went to backtages singing the song, people were saying that before Nirvana went on. CLIP #3: Jorge Francisco Soto Flores: Seattle could be any city in Chile. Seattle is a remote place, a rainy place, a place of forests. We (Chileans) are the end of the world, we are the outsiders. We have barriers that could be the Andes Mountains, the desert, the ice, the Pacific Ocean… It happened at a specific time in the 90s. We were returning to a pseudo-democracy. There is also something about representation with the lyrics in every aspect from pessimism now knowing what is going to happen next and also added to to the fact that Chileans love rock music. They are fans of rock and metal. What reason is there for people to be so fanatical about Chris Cornell that here is a god? About Cobain who is a god; that Eddie Vedder, who is a god; Mark Lineman who is a god. I think that’s the only explanation. I don’t see any other, honestly. In this laugh-out-loud episode of Opie Radio, Opie kicks things off with a hilarious tale of ravioli-induced bathroom woes and a sushi restaurant blunder that left his daughter empty-handed. Joined by the always-entertaining Ron the Waiter, the duo dives into a wild mix of topics: from Pope Francis’ over-the-top funeral to Trump’s blue suit rebellion and Bill Belichick’s eyebrow-raising interview. Things get spicy when Opie spills the tea on his yoga class antics, sparking a cheeky debate about “cats and cows” poses and whether it’s cheating to daydream in the back row. Plus, they geek out over the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s latest inductees, sharing epic stories about Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker’s $10,000 twist demand, and Chris Cornell’s haunting vocals. Don’t miss the chaos, laughs, and Opie's mojito-making Popeye arm!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This Grammy award winning producer, songwriter, and author joins the show to discuss his lengthy career that has included collaborations with The Civil Wars, Chris Cornell, and the Lone Bellow.
As a teenager, Chris Cornell was traumatized by a bad PCP trip that turned him into a recluse for years. Music pulled him out of the darkness when he discovered his four-octave voice by accident – A voice he used to incredible effect as the frontman for both Soundgarden and Audioslave. But the darkness never really went away – it was there in his hometown of Seattle, where tragedies closed the chapter on grunge, and in his music, which was authentic to the very end.
