About 55 million people in the world have dementia. That's according to the World Health Organization. It's also the seventh leading cause of death among the global population. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. It makes up 60 to 70 percent of cases. But it's well behind other chronic illnesses on the journey to an effective treatment. The reason may be attributed to years of research based on doctored images. Investigative reporter Charles Piller uncovered that and much more about the world of Alzheimer's research in his new book, "Doctored."We talk to Piller about this Alzheimer's, faulty research, and the search for an effective cure.Want to support 1A? Every study I have seen about the Measles and it's dangers should put parents minds at ease. Instead the media ignores these studies, even uses phony statistics to try and scare you. Big Pharma wants you living in fear so it can sell more MMR vaccines. While the media knows sensationalism gets ratings and ratings mean more Big Pharma money. This episode of Stinchfield exposes the MMR vaccine as useless. Something few doctors will tell you. But we have the hard statistics to back up the claim that Measles had been nearly eradicated long before the vaccine hit the market in the early 1960's. Because the truth doesn't work for the pharmaceutical industrial complex, it resorts to lies and misdirection. Even NBC appears to have been caught doctoring a stock photo to make it look like a baby was infected with Measles. That is about as deceitful as it gets. We have the photo evidence! “Demonstrates how some of the most accomplished and elite scientific gatekeepers may have lied, cheated, squandered trust and endangered lives.” —The Wall Street Journal In this episode of the You Are Not Broken podcast, Dr. Kelly Casperson interviews investigative journalist Charles Piller about his newly released book, 'Doctored,' which delves into the misconduct in Alzheimer's research. They discuss the amyloid hypothesis, the role of whistleblowers, the FDA's controversial drug approvals, and the systemic issues in medical research. Piller emphasizes the importance of scientific integrity and the need for independent oversight in research while also exploring emerging theories in Alzheimer's treatment and the impact of lifestyle factors on prevention. Takeaways The amyloid hypothesis has dominated Alzheimer's research but has significant flaws. Whistleblowers play a crucial role in exposing misconduct in scientific research. The FDA's approval process for drugs can be influenced by industry relationships. Lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise can impact Alzheimer's risk. There is a growing interest in alternative theories for Alzheimer's treatment. AI can assist in detecting research fraud but also poses risks for falsification. Misinformation in health media can lead to public harm and confusion. Independent agencies are needed to investigate scientific misconduct effectively. The scientific community must improve transparency and accountability. There is hope for progress in Alzheimer's research despite current challenges. Award-winning investigative journalist Charles Piller joins us in San Francisco for an in-depth look at what he says is a world of fraud, corruption, deceit, and greed that have set back important work on treating Alzheimer's disease. Nearly seven million Americans live with Alzheimer's, a tragedy that is projected to grow into a $1 trillion crisis by 2050. While families suffer and promises of pharmaceutical breakthroughs keep coming up short, investigative journalist Piller says that we've quite likely been walking the wrong path to finding a cure all along—led astray by a cabal of self-interested researchers, government accomplices, and corporate greed. Drawing on the work in his new book Doctored, Piller highlights a whistleblower—Vanderbilt professor Matthew Schrag—whose work exposed a massive scandal. Schrag alleged that a university lab led by a precocious young scientist and a Nobel Prize–rumored director delivered apparently falsified data at the heart of the leading hypothesis about the disease. From there, based on years of investigative reporting, Piller says he's exposed a vast network of deceit and its players, all the way up to the FDA. He points to evidence that hundreds of important Alzheimer's research papers are based on false data. In the process, he says even against a flood of money and influence, a determined cadre of scientific renegades have fought back to challenge the field's institutional powers in service to science and the tens of thousands of patients who have been drawn into trials to test dubious drugs. Every year, billions of dollars are funneled into Alzheimer's research. And yet, so far, there's no treatment that's been able to reverse the disease, or even meaningfully slow the cognitive decline of patients.Part of the reason is that the disease is complex, and brain disorders are notoriously difficult to understand. But in a new book, an investigative science reporter makes the case that there's another reason progress toward Alzheimer's treatments has stalled: scientific fraud.Host Flora Lichtman talks with Charles Piller, investigative journalist at Science and author of the book Doctored: Fraud, Arrogance, and Tragedy in the Quest to Cure Alzheimer's.Read an excerpt of Doctored at sciencefriday.com.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. How can 20 years of fraudulent science pass? It's complicated. It's not just vested interests but humans, desire, ego, hope and poor checks and balances. “Doctored”, the new book by investigative science journalist Charles Piller, is an arresting deep dive into how Alzheimer's disease treatment has been set back by corrupt researchers, negligent regulators, and the profit motives of companies for the past nearly 20 years. I genuinely believe it's one of the most important conversations I've hosted on the show, in a time where many have become blanket skeptics of science - while we explore this hectically fraudulent research: I asked Charles: Is there hope for us to ever believe again in the scientific method? He walks us through his investigative process after the initial tip off, how he gathered information that was robust enough to draw a conclusion, and then how, despite uncovering this research and nearly 20 years of fraudulent claims, he maintains hope and a lot of trust in the scientific method. I hope you find the show as powerful as I did and it doesn't feel too heartbreaking but rather more like we are finally now closer to knowing how we can make progress by carving a new chapter in Alzheimer's research for cause and cure. Charles Piller's Doctored reveals a crisis of integrity at the heart of Alzheimer's research, exposing systemic fraud, institutional negligence, and corporate influence that have derailed progress toward effective treatments. The book, based on years of investigative reporting, traces how falsified data, manipulated research, and conflicts of interest corrupted the field, leaving millions of patients and families struggling for answers. About Charles Charles Piller is an investigative journalist for Science magazine and his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Sacramento Bee, and more. Piller has been honored with many national journalism awards, and is the author of Gene Wars, The Fail-Safe Society, and Doctored. Follow him on X @CPiller / charlespiller.com. Key Takeaways The amyloid hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease is the dominant way of looking at the ailment and its origins. Hundreds of respected Alzheimer's research papers are based on false data proving this hypothesis, receiving billions in research and development funds. Manipulating microscopic brain tissue images and Western blot images significantly impacts data interpretation and scientific acceptance. Such alterations can misrepresent results, erode scientific integrity, lead to flawed conclusions, and create irreproducible findings. These manipulations constitute ethical violations and scientific misconduct. Universities face a significant challenge in addressing scientific misconduct among faculty due to inherent conflicts of interest. The need to maintain research integrity often clashes with protecting institutional reputation, securing funding, and retaining prominent researchers. This conflict can lead to inadequate oversight and investigation of potential misconduct. New ideas about the cause of Alzheimer's are on the horizon, including the possibility of latent infections as a factor in Alzheimer's, such as herpes virus. Clinical trials are in progress to try to treat herpes virus that may be latent in the brain. Another possible factor is inflammation. GLP-1 inhibitors are being studied to delay cognitive decline. Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and having a healthy lifestyle are beneficial to stave off Alzheimer's disease.
Nearly seven million Americans, about one in nine people over the age of 65, live with Alzheimer's. It's a heartbreaking disease for those afflicted and the 11 million loved ones who are taking care of them. But despite decades of research and countless promises of a breakthrough, there are no significant treatments to stop the cognitive decline. While mortality rates for other leading causes of death like cancer and heart disease have gone down, Alzheimer's death rates continue to rise. In his new book “Doctored” investigative reporter Charles Piller makes the case that a wide web of fraud, greed and negligence – from individual scientists to the FDA – has derailed the search for a cure or treatment. And, he says the scientific establishment's belief in one hypothesis of the disease, despite the lack of progress, has shut out other promising avenues. We'll talk with Piller about his new book and what it reveals about Alzheimer's research and the broader science landscape. Guests: Charles Piller, investigative journalist, Science magazine; author, "Doctored: Fraud, Arrogance and Tragedy in the Quest to Cure Alzheimer's"
More than 6 million Americans now suffer from Alzheimer's Disease. So the stakes in find a cure for this neurological illness are huge. Too large, in fact, for some fraudulent American medical researchers. As the investigative science reporter Charles Piller reveals in DOCTORED, there has been considerable fraud, some of it outright criminal, in Alzheimer's research in the United States. Piller's key finding, discovered through brave whistleblowers like Vanderbilt's Dr. Matthew Schrag, is that researchers often doctored images in their studies, either for career advancement or financial gain. Piller emphasizes that while most scientists are honest, institutional oversight has been inadequate in preventing and addressing research misconduct. So I guess Americans should be thankful that the incoming administration has nominated a man of unambiguous moral standing to be the new Secretary of Health and Human Services. I wish. Here are the 5 KEEN ON takeaways from our conversation with Piller:* The Alzheimer's research field has been compromised by instances of scientific misconduct, particularly through the manipulation of research images. While some cases involve financial fraud (like the Cassava Sciences case), most stem from academic pressure to "publish or perish," leading researchers to "beautify" or outright falsify their data.* Major scientific institutions (NIH, FDA, universities, and scholarly journals) have failed to properly oversee and investigate potential research misconduct, particularly in image manipulation. Piller argues these institutions need to reform their oversight practices to maintain credibility and advance legitimate research.* The dominance of the "amyloid hypothesis" in Alzheimer's research has led to a concentration of funding and attention on one approach, potentially starving other promising research directions. However, new approaches are emerging, including studies of GLP-1 inhibitors (similar to weight loss drugs) and investigations into the role of latent viral infections like herpes.* The whistleblower in this case, Dr. Matthew Schrag from Vanderbilt University, took significant professional risks as an untenured professor to expose these issues, demonstrating the challenges faced by those who attempt to address scientific misconduct.* While there's no immediate cure for Alzheimer's, Piller remains optimistic about better treatments emerging in the next 10-20 years. He also emphasizes that lifestyle factors like exercise, diet, and blood pressure management can help forestall some of the worst effects of dementia, though they're not a cure.Charles Piller is an investigative journalist for Science magazine and his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Sacramento Bee, and more. An insider told Page Six “It's an awful lot to be under all of this public scrutiny when you are recovering from major surgery."The rumour mill — particularly on social media — has gotten out of control, but Kate is recovering well and she will be back by Easter. She just needs to be left in peace,"“She just needs to be left in peace.”Another palace insider mused, “I worry about all this attention on Catherine. She did not look happy at all in the car on Monday.” Beginning with that photo of “Kate” in the car, some on social media are speculating about possible manipulation. One individual even pointed out discrepancies in the color of bricks behind the royal couple's car, although others used Google street view to point out the bricks actually look like that. Regardless, the conspiracy post garnered significant attention, with thousands of views and likes.Radar Online aggregated some reports under the narrative that Prince William is beside himself because Kate wants to withdraw from public life. This narrative, not being picked up yet by other outlets, follows the lead of a”senior palace source” telling the National Enquirer "Kate's desperate struggle with the constant pressures of life in the royal fishbowl has clearly taken a terrible toll on her physical and mental health. She spent weeks staying out of the public eye after her operations — and it's only strengthened her resolve to quit,"Geo.tv consolidated some more insider quotes including:“William is beside himself over her decision. He's stunned his wife could ever consider such a move.""He made sure she knew what she was getting into when she married him and she's done a brilliant job. He's concerned she's become emotionally unstable, but she insists she's finally seeing clearly!"Another source is quoted as saying : "Kate's disillusioned and frustrated by the ongoing drama surrounding her renegade brother-in-law, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan. But ironically, they've shown her there's an alternative to being trapped in The Firm.""She knew when she married William her life would change forever, but never in her wildest dreams thought it would be this intense!""Kate had a hard time when she first joined the family but after a few years assumed she'd gotten through the worst of it, "Kate's been painted the villain, a racist who questioned the skin color of Meghan's son, Archie, before he was born, who made Meghan cry before her wedding and who went out of her way not to be friendly. Those stories will never go away, which is one of the reasons Kate wants to retreat,"

Did you know DIY censorship was practiced by those outside the film censor's office. Even after official censors vetted publicity material, some film posters showed too much skin, especially male arms and legs. Slam the Gavel welcomes back Mark Andrews to the podcast. Mark Andrews has been on the podcast Season 2, Episode 80 and Season 3, Episode 13 and 23, and Season 4, Episode 116. In the last podcast they discussed that their case was in the 9th Circuit Court Of Appeals in California. Attorney Eric Wafer is having them look at fraud upon the court on the entire proceeding. The court proceeding has been corrupted. Mark had evidence of Fraud on the Court. We had talked about the cesspool of corruption of the 21 years he had been in court through 76 hearings and 15 judges later he had been in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California with fraud on the court. He has not seen his kids since 2008. The court summarily dismissed the evidence of fraud on the court and then tossed it out of court calling it "insignificant." There was no legal substance as to why the case was dismissed. How do you have a fraud upon the court claim and then they dismiss the evidence of the fraud upon the court claim? If the evidence is so clear, don't they want to shut it down? Mark and Mark's attorney are working with their investigator and currently got a call yesterday, the local police department went down to do a follow up interview because they had sent them over emails that they had gotten from the transcriptionist who DOCTORED the transcripts and she said she knew right where they were but this wasn't what she told the police officer. The police officer went over yesterday and the transcriptionist had acknowledged that there is now an investigation by the Transcriptionist Bureau and that she did have her notes but she could not release anything while an investigation is pending and has invoked a lawyer...... The Police Department is seeing if they are going to submit the complaint itself as it is clear evidence, with TWO copies of the same transcript SAME DATE, SAME TIME SAME HEARING---BUT NOT THE SAME and that's a FELONY. Mark is hoping that they will send the complaint to the DA's office. Where it belongs. MORE to follow up on Mark's case as he has come so far and will never give up until justice is brought forth. [25 JAN 22] HERE'S PROOF THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS COVERING FOR THEIR OPERATIVE, RAY EPPS! THEY DOCTORED THIS VIDEO DURING THE J6 PROUD BOYS TRIAL!
The United States is seeing economic trends not witnessed since the Great Depression, including its falling GDP. While there are various estimates on the crisis, it's projected to last for years before real improvements are seen, and early estimates didn't take into account unforeseen events such as ongoing lockdowns in China or Russia's war with Ukraine. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has been posting on Twitter about rising employment and improvements in the economy. But emerging data suggests the numbers may not be accurate. This includes a recent admission by the Philadelphia Fed that it overstated U.S. jobs by at least 1.1 million. In this live Q&A with Crossroads host Joshua Philipp, we'll discuss these stories and others, and answer questions from the audience. ⭕️ Stay up-to-date with Josh with the Crossroads NEWSLETTER
