Tim Goehl's story is one of redemption through amplifiers and power chords. After spending 22 years in Austin where his band Carbide nearly signed to Prosthetic Records before addiction derailed his dreams, Tim found himself back in Quincy, Illinois with a clean slate and a commitment to sobriety. When he arrived three and a half years ago, the local music scene was virtually nonexistent. A chance encounter with an old friend's touring band needing a show sparked what would become Midwest Monster Promotions—a labor of love that has now produced over 35 events and breathed life into a dormant musical community. "I turned my addiction from drugs to music," Tim shares, "because when I tried to do both, the drugs took the music away from me."Now working at a drug rehabilitation center by day while promoting shows and playing in five different bands by night (including his "stoner core" outfit Juggernaut Agenda), Tim has discovered that his second chance at music is sweeter than the first. He's built a DIY empire complete with handmade stages, local business sponsorships, and connections to bands from New York to Indiana. His upcoming fourth annual Metal Fest will feature 22 bands over two days, showcasing the incredible talent he believes is overlooked simply because of geography.Whether you're a metal enthusiast or simply appreciate stories of transformation and perseverance, check out Timothy's band Juggernaut Agenda this Saturday in Macomb, IL with Sustenance and Pursuit. Witness firsthand how one man's commitment to sobriety and music is reshaping the cultural landscape of the Midwest, one power chord at a time.Check out Dial The Wild on Facebook and Instagram#dialthewild

Hailing from Turku, Finland, Svarta Havet are set to release their sophomore album, titled ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', via their new label home Prosthetic Records on May 9th. On ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', the self-described dyster (gloomy) post-hardcore group cast a critical eye over the negative effects of Western colonialism, capital greed and convenience at the cost of sustainability, presenting a rallying cry for change whilst never losing sight of the light that this world has to offer. Formed in 2018, Svarta Havet - translated as “black sea” - were born from the Finnish DIY punk and hardcore scene, with the members bonding over a shared affinity for punk music and community-first ideals with a focus on antifascist, feminist, trans and queer politics. ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', translated in English as “The moon will light your way” and a direct quote from album track Göm dig, was recorded in January 2024 at Waiting Room Studio in Tampere, Finland, with producer Mikael Neves. We spoke with vocalist Lotta and guitarist Joakim about the new album, about their evolving sound, and how they are writing with more nuances these days. As political as ever, but sharper, we discuss their expressions, as well as what this album says about them, and so much more. Album Review - The Way Of Ancients (Volcandra)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2024 5:18

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Its Xander with another underground metal release. Today we will be looking at the Louisville based melodic black metal band Volcandra. This is their 2nd full-length studio album titled The Way of Ancients which comes out on March 1st through Prosthetic Records. For this review, I decided to go back and re-listen to their 2020 debut Into The Azure as a way to compare the band's previous work with the current release. Is it a step up or step down? My answer is that The Way of Ancients is leagues superior than the debut. The opening track "Birth of the Nephalem" eases us in with a calming guitar riff for the first minute and 20 seconds before knocking us down with the sudden blast of heavy music. The winding guitar riff that follows is an earworm that will have you playing air guitar. Not to mention the noticeable fluctuations in the Dave Palenske's vocal pitch "Fouled Sanctity" is a fast very groovy head bobber that has a mellow riff in the middle of the song that reminds me of some older bands in the scene. This is because guitarists River Jordan and Jamie DeMar work very well together when it comes to sounding very lively. I love the creepy piano intro for the next track which is titled "Nemesis Confession". Once we hear the old bell, this song becomes a furious, straight forward black metal song. It is certainly one of, if not the fastest song on the album musically. Not the fastest vocally but we'll get to that one later, believe that! Drummer Mark Hargrave continues the heavy rain of blast beats in "Maiden of Anguish". He provides this only in moderation for an enjoyable black metal listening experience. Mark has the proper hand eye coordination to use each and every drum and cymbal on his kit for just the right amount of change up. "Seven Tombs" is another song with a soft and calming beginning but if you have been following the pattern so far, you know that won't last long. There's a lot of lyrics that are thrown at you at full speed followed by some group vocals. There was a part where a guitar solo would be in full swing but was interrupted by the vocals coming back too quickly. "The Blackened Temple" is the fastest and blackest black metal song on this album and also my favorite. It's an unrelenting banger. The whole song is fast and even the slow down halfway through all the chaos is still every bit as amazing. Dave spits out entire paragraphs worth of lyrics with a hyper speed delivery. There is so much to say about the musical structure of the track "Not Even Death" as it can be all over the place in the best possible way. Its unpredictable with a lot of twists and turns in the guitar riffs. I believe its best not to spoil this one, as it should simply just be listened to. I can describe it but I'd rather you just hear it for yourself. Last we get the album title track "The Way of Ancients". Definitely the longest track but its among the best this fantastic album has to offer. And because I haven't credited him yet, Andrew Casciato has done a terrific job of tying the music together with his bass playing abilities throughout this entire record. My final thoughts about this kick ass underground metal band is that I hope they play a show in Nashville sometime soon. If not, I'll host a show with them this summer with plenty of supporting local black metal bands in the Tennessee scene. Believe it or not, Tennessee has a lot of underground black metal bands, many of which would welcome Volcandra and another great Kentucky band like Bihargam. I can't recommend this one enough. Mark your calendars for the 1st of March because you're going to want to purchase both the digital copy and CD. I believe they are currently accepting pre-orders for The Way Of Ancients on their Bandcamp page. These guys deserve your attention and I'm going to give them a score of 7.5/10.

On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to HIM from Sermon, to talk about their new album and the state of the world today. The conversation starts with Pipeman telling HIM that he is excited to have them on the show because they have some killer new music. HIM thanks Pipeman for the introduction and Pipeman responds by saying that he is from the New York, New Jersey area and he is brutally honest. HIM jokingly says that Pipeman should have told them if their music was crap. This sparks an idea in Pipeman's mind to start off all interviews in the same manner. Pipeman talks about how HIM's new album is all about what the world is going through today and how hateful people are, which really burns him all the time. This is why Pipeman loves HIM's new music. HIM agrees with Pipeman, saying that the subject of the album is interchangeable with most of human history, but it feels more potent now because of the internet. Pipeman responds, saying that sometimes he thinks they were better off without the internet and social media and not knowing how hateful people were. HIM agrees and adds that it is nice to be able to shut off from the noise if you want to, but it is difficult to have a day where you can escape that kind of information. The conversation takes a lighter turn when Pipeman shares that he was in Bali for a couple of months and how he was able to escape all the noise from social media and the internet. HIM expresses interest in Bali and asks what religion is predominant in Bali. Pipeman says that most of it is Hindu, but they also have Buddhism. He adds that it is cool to see two different philosophies sharing a temple. HIM agrees and shares about multi-faith prayer rooms in museums, where Catholics and Muslims pray together, and says it's a beautiful thing to witness. The conversation ends on a positive note, with both Pipeman and HIM enjoying the exchange of ideas. You can check the band out on social media, via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @Sermonsound if you want to keep up to date with them, and you can be sure to find their music available to purchase from must good music outlets. On March 31st, melodic-melancholic-doom outfit Sermon will release their sophomore album, Of Golden Verse, via Prosthetic Records. Departure is song that was sent “Golden is what I want Sermon to be,” he notes. “It's got the intricate, indulgent prog thing going on, it's got a big old chorus and the structure is a bit weird. It keeps going up and up and up. It's not just verse and chorus. It just keeps climbing. It's all about the idea of people weighing each other down to get them to think the way they're thinking. It's like conversion - you're constantly weighed down by other people and in the end you give up, and you say, ‘Okay, I agree with you…' just to end it. That constant weighing down is an abuse of power. So with Golden, the idea is that you're just raining down gold on this person until they're completely cast in it.”Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Thank you to our label Prosthetic Records for being with us the whole way and supporting this album one-hundred percent. We hope everyone enjoys it.” "Feeding The Flames Of Annihilation" was self-produced at Homewrecker Studios in Tucson with bassist Ryan Bram engineering and mixing, before the album was handed to Brad Boatright at Audiosiege for mastering, the record completed with cover art by Matthew Mutterperl. Death metal and romantic comedies don't usually mesh...or do they? We welcome one of the up and coming frontmen in modern death metal, Alexander Jones from New York-based band Undeath, onto IUF. We ask Alex about the well-deserved recognition he and his bandmates have received within the last year or so, and it's been a nice reminder for him to look back on as the band gears up for the new album, “It's Time...To Rise From The Grave.” Filled with some of the heaviest material 2022 will ever see, and take our word for it, the new record is quite the neck workout clocking in at 36 minutes. GRAB THAT ICE PACK. At the same time, Alex describes how that level of pressure to drop their sophomore offering was never really there, other than meeting deadlines – And it was more of what they were comfortable with from their debut. More riffs, more gore, and more brutality. It's a simple formula, yet it does the trick. And of course, we end our entertaining conversation about our love for romantic comedies. Whether you are or aren't a fan of that infamous movie genre, strap yourselves in, Alex and IUF host Sonny get down to the specifics on their favorite releases throughout the years of rom-com. Tune in now, and be sure to buy and stream Undeath's highly-anticipated album, “It's Time...To Rise From The Grave,” unleashing April 22 via Prosthetic Records.Stay connected with Undeath, visit: https://www.undeathmetal.com/, https://www.instagram.com/undeathNY/ and https://www.facebook.com/undeathNYStay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

This episode we welcomed back our friend Trevor Portz to chat about his band Abhoria and their new self-titled album, as well as his forthcoming Ashen Horde record. We discussed the musical differences between the bands, where the Abhoria name came from, signing with Prosthetic and Transcending Obscurity, and why Trevor has abandoned his devil given name, Vor. After the interview, we dug into Metal News, New Releases and What We've Been Listening To, then we entered the Metal Thunderdome, where Opeth's “Damnation” faced off against Katatonia's "Discouraged Ones.” Plus, Will becomes a disembodied head, Markisan does the Bango and Matt keeps his palms warm with a new pair of fingerless hand snuggies.

The return of live music is providing new opportunities for connection, and we couldn't miss the chance to speak with one of our favorite fast-rising new groups. While the world was isolating indoors, Undeath burst onto the international death metal scene with their blistering Prosthetic Records debut, Lesions of a Different Kind. The relentlessly brutal record combines influences from the genre's greatest acts with a modern approach to storytelling to create an engaging listening experience for fans of all ages. The band's following seems to confirm this, as it features people from all walks of life and every economic level. We're not saying modern death metal needed Undeath to exist, but their existence is helping the genre carry onward into a new decade with fresh talent and new listeners. Undeath is currently touring America for the first time since Legions' release. The group serves as the act on The Black Dahlia Murder's fall headlining run, which features additional support from After The Burial, Carnifex, and Rivers of Nihil. Undeath is already rubbing shoulders with their metal peers in a big way, and they've got the added bonus of being the first band to welcome fans back to live metal shows. Their presence on stage sets the tone for everything that follows, and we're happy to report that they do not disappoint. In this Music Biz episode, host James Shotwell chats with Undeath frontman Alex Jones about his band's return to the road. Jones recounts the band's efforts to remain creative during the pandemic, as well as the conversations that lead to their first shows back. There is even some discussion about the band's next release, which Jones claims is already written and ready to record.
