In the ancient ruins of Delphi, Greece — where people once sought the voice of the gods — I reflect on the recently resolved case in Delphi, Indiana. Richard Allen has been found guilty of murdering Abigail Williams and Liberty German. Still, many claim he was framed. Abigail Williams and Liberty German were two young teens simply out for a walk one day, when the unthinkable happened. A hunt would lead to Richard Allen, though there still remain a host of characters with some very shady links to this case. Send us a text We're once again delving into a case that has haunted the small town of Delphi, Indiana—the horrific murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German, known as The Delphi Murders. When we first covered this case in 2021 (actually, our very first episode), it was a chilling mystery with very little known. Now, with new revelations, the story has only grown more complex.A case filled with shocking twists, unanswered questions, and lingering doubts—this investigation has never been straightforward. After years of searching for justice, a man was finally arrested, tried, and convicted. But did they convict the right man? Or was Richard Allen merely a convenient scapegoat for something far more sinister? Professor and author Jane Barnette from the University of Kansas joins us for a discussion on how witch trial narratives continue to influence our cultural understanding. She shares about her groundbreaking production of Kimberly Bellflower's "John Procter is the Villain" - a contemporary play that boldly reexamines "The Crucible" through the lens of #MeToo, premiering at the University of Kansas just days before its Broadway debut.“John Procter is the Villain" considers Arthur Miller's messaging in "The Crucible," examining how Miller's fictional recreations of historical figures like John Proctor and Abigail Williams have shaped public perception of the Salem trials, often at the expense of historical accuracy. Consider with us, how theatrical reinterpretation can help reclaim silenced voices and how the term "witch hunt" has evolved in contemporary discourse.Theater serves as a powerful medium for confronting and transforming our understanding of the past and modern society. The high-profile case of two murdered Indiana teens takes a stunning turn after video of the killer, taken by one of his victims shortly before their deaths, is revealed. Andrea Canning reports.
How Did The Delphi Case Become Such A Mess? Could investigators have ignored the real culprit in favor of convenience? The Delphi murder case, with its haunting details and chilling accusations, continues to baffle. Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke pulls back the curtain on the troubling inconsistencies surrounding Richard Allen's conviction for the tragic deaths of Liberty German and Abigail Williams. From shaky forensic evidence to ignored confessions and baffling prosecutorial choices, this episode dissects whether investigators were blindfolded by groupthink, pressured by small-town passions, or simply doubling down on a lazy lead. Why were so many alternative suspects dismissed, and does the data truly align with Allen's alleged involvement? Could there be a pattern of behavior pointing elsewhere? And most importantly, who really fits the puzzle pieces of this tragic case? #DelphiMurders #TrueCrimePodcast #RichardAllen #FBIAnalysis #JusticeForLibbyAndAbby #TrueCrimeCommunity #BehavioralAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? What happens when crucial evidence in a murder case goes missing, and the jury never hears about alternative suspects? That's the burning question at the center of Richard Allen's fight for a new trial in the Delphi murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German. Alleging prosecutorial missteps, overlooked evidence, and destroyed recordings, Allen's defense is pressing for the chance to revisit a verdict that may have been built on shaky ground. Could this motion for a new trial reveal critical errors, or is it just a desperate gamble? And what about the mysterious figures tied to this case—some alive, others not—that were never introduced at trial? Will these threads finally be unraveled in an appeals court? #DelphiMurders #TrueCrime #RichardAllen #JusticeForLibbyAndAbby #MurderMystery #LegalDrama #CourtroomTwist Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Attorneys for Richard Allen, convicted of the 2017 murders of Liberty German and Abigail Williams in Delphi, Indiana, have filed a Motion to Correct Errors. The motion highlights four alleged legal missteps that they argue are significant enough to overturn the jury's verdict or warrant a new hearing. Allen was convicted in November 2023 and sentenced the following month to 130 years in prison for the February 13, 2017, murders of the two teenage girls. The case has drawn nationwide attention for its complexity and lengthy investigation. The motion, filed by defense attorneys Andrew Baldwin, Jennifer Auger, and Bradley Rozzi, represents the first formal step toward appealing Allen's conviction. The defense raises concerns about the legality of Allen's custody transfer, which occurred after his arrest. They allege the transfer from the Carroll County Jail to the Indiana Department of Corrections was conducted unlawfully, as Allen's attorney was not notified, denying him the right to legal representation. “Mr. Allen was not afforded either the right to be heard by counsel or by himself at the safekeeping ‘proceeding,'” the motion states. The motion also claims prosecutors failed to correct false testimony concerning a white van seen in the area on the day of the murders. Surveillance footage presented by the defense contradicts the timeline provided by the prosecution, potentially impacting the jury's decision. “When the State introduces testimony it knows will be false or fails to correct testimony it knows or should know to be false, once elicited, a conviction must be vacated or reversed if that false evidence ‘may have had an effect on the outcome of the trial,'” the defense argued. A third issue raised involves a reported confession by another individual in 2017. Notes from an inmate claim that another person confessed to the murders, allegedly mentioning the use of a boxcutter. This claim is significant, given changes in testimony about the murder weapon during Allen's trial. The defense contends this confession could have established probable cause for an alternative suspect, further undermining the state's case. Additionally, questions surrounding the forensic analysis of Liberty German's cellphone have been brought to light. The defense challenges the state's claims that environmental factors, such as water or dirt, could have caused data suggesting headphones were plugged into the phone at the crime scene. “Ms. Eldridge's opinion that dirt or water could not have caused L.G.'s phone to log wired headphones being plugged into and being unplugged from the phone on February 13, 2017, exculpates Mr. Allen and would probably produce a different result at a new trial,” the motion argues. The defense seeks either a dismissal of Allen's convictions or a hearing to address the errors detailed in the motion. This filing is separate from the formal appeal anticipated to be submitted by newly-appointed appellate attorneys for Allen. The court's response to the motion will determine the next steps in the legal proceedings and the future of Allen's conviction. #DelphiMurders #TrueCrime #RichardAllenCase #LegalErrors #JusticeForLibbyAndAbby #AppealProcess #CriminalJustice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? This claim is significant, given changes in testimony about the murder weapon during Allen's trial. The defense seeks either a dismissal of Allen's convictions or a hearing to address the errors detailed in the motion. Richard Allen's sentencing for the 2017 murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German in Delphi, Indiana, marked a profound moment of closure and controversy. On December 20, 2024, Judge Frances Gull delivered the maximum sentence of 130 years, two consecutive 65-year terms, to the man convicted of one of Indiana's most harrowing crimes. The courtroom was charged with emotion as the families of the victims shared their pain, but the day's proceedings also reignited intense debates over the integrity of the investigation and the fairness of Allen's trial. The sentencing hearing began with emotional victim impact statements that laid bare the anguish felt by the families of Abby and Libby. Abby's grandmother, Diana Erskin, spoke of sleepless nights haunted by crime scene photos, while Libby's mother, Kerry Timmons, described a path of destruction left by Allen's actions. The families' grief was palpable, their words searing—a demand for justice and a desire for closure that could never be fully realized. However, the day's events were as much about the case's unresolved questions as they were about the conviction. Richard Allen's defense attorneys had argued throughout the trial that his confessions were not credible, claiming they were the product of mental duress and “situational psychosis” brought on by his prolonged isolation in prison. These confessions, made during phone calls with his wife, included the chilling admission, “I did it. I killed Abby and Libby.” Yet, the defense maintained that the circumstances surrounding these statements—and their admissibility—warranted scrutiny. Central to the prosecution's case was the discovery of an unspent .40 caliber bullet at the crime scene. Forensic analysis linked the cartridge to Allen's Sig Sauer P226 firearm. This connection was pivotal in securing his conviction, but it was not without contention. The defense questioned the reliability of the forensic methods used, suggesting that the evidence lacked the scientific rigor needed for such a consequential case. Moreover, audio recordings recovered from Libby's phone, capturing the infamous “Down the hill” command, were presented as circumstantial evidence. However, no definitive voice analysis linked the recordings to Allen, raising further doubts about the prosecution's narrative. The trial's controversies extended beyond the evidence. Judge Gull's decision to exclude the defense's alternative theory—that members of a Norse pagan group, known as Odinists, were responsible for the murders—became a focal point of criticism. Allen's attorneys argued that this theory was supported by evidence pointing to ritualistic elements at the crime scene. The exclusion of this theory, they contended, deprived Allen of a fair opportunity to present his defense. The procedural limitations imposed on the defense team compounded these concerns. Despite the gruesome nature of the crime and the emotional weight of the case, questions about other potential suspects lingered. Notably, Kegan Kline, a man accused of using a fake social media profile to communicate with Libby, remained a figure of interest. Similarly, the late Ron Logan, on whose property the girls' bodies were found, had faced scrutiny in the early stages of the investigation. The lack of a comprehensive exploration of these avenues left some observers questioning whether the true scope of the case had been fully uncovered. For the families of Abby and Libby, the sentencing provided a measure of justice, but it came with a heavy cost. The crime scene photo leak in 2023 had forced them to relive their trauma repeatedly, with images circulating online despite their efforts to halt the dissemination. Becky Patty, Libby's grandmother, spoke passionately about the need for accountability, not only for the crime but also for the harm caused by the mishandling of sensitive materials. Judge Gull's remarks during sentencing underscored the gravity of the case. Addressing Allen directly, she noted his dismissive demeanor, including moments of eye-rolling during the proceedings. Her words reflected the collective outrage felt by the community, but they also highlighted the deep divisions in public opinion about the trial's fairness. As she lifted the gag order that had silenced parties involved for over two years, the broader implications of the case's handling began to emerge. A significant point of contention in the Delphi community is the growing belief that they have been lulled into a false sense of security by the very institutions they trusted to protect them. Many feel that law enforcement failed to do their jobs, ignored crucial clues and signs, and ultimately covered up their missteps by deleting evidence. This perception has fueled skepticism about Richard Allen's guilt, with some arguing that the rush to convict him may have been an attempt to obscure investigative failures. These accusations further undermine confidence in the judicial process and leave lingering doubts about whether justice has been truly served. Allen's defense team has signaled their intention to appeal, citing multiple grounds, including the exclusion of alternative theories and the admissibility of the confession evidence. Legal experts have suggested that the procedural controversies could lead to a retrial, a prospect that would reopen wounds for the families and the Delphi community. As the courtroom emptied, the questions surrounding the case lingered. Did the system truly serve justice, or were critical aspects of the truth left unexplored? For now, Richard Allen remains convicted, but the shadow of doubt continues to cast a long and uncertain pall over the Delphi murders. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
