On this episode I talked with Jessie about when she knew she wanted to be a performer and be on Broadway, 36 Questions the Podcast Musical and what made her want to take on the role of Natalie/Judith in it, getting cast to be Dawn on the Waitress tour, how she managed to adjust to life on the road with Waitress, how she ended up getting involved in the off-Broadway production of Cruel Intentions Musical, her involvement with Hadestown since it's New York Theatre Workshop Days, when she was told she'd be a part of the Original Broadway Cast of Hadestown and be not only a swing, but also an understudy for Eurydice and two of the fates, and much MORE! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/backstagewithbeccab/support

A. Milne“I'll tell you how the sun roseA ribbon at a time...It's a living book, this life; it folds out in a million settings, cast with a billion beautiful characters, and it is almost over for you. It doesn't matter how old you are; it is coming to a close quickly, and soon the credits will roll and all your friends will fold out of your funeral and drive back to their homes in cold and still and silence. And they will make a fire and pour some wine and think about how you once were . . . and feel a kind of sickness at the idea you never again will be.So soon you will be in that part of the book where you are holding the bulk of the pages in your left hand, and only a thin wisp of the story in your right. You will know by the page count, not by the narrative, that the Author is wrapping things up. You begin to mourn its ending, and want to pace yourself slowly toward its closure, knowing the last lines will speak of something beautiful, of the end of something long and earned, and you hope the thing closes out like last breaths, like whispers about how much and who the characters have come to love, and how authentic the sentiments feel when they have earned a hundred pages of qualification. And so my prayer is that your story will have involved some leaving and some coming home, some summer and some winter, some roses blooming out like children in a play. My hope is your story will be about changing, about getting something beautiful born inside of you about learning to love a woman or a man, about learning to love a child, about moving yourself around water, around mountains, around friends, about learning to love others more than we love ourselves, about learning oneness as a way of understanding God. We get one story, you and I, and one story alone. God has established the elements, the setting and the climax and the resolution. It would be a crime not to venture out, wouldn't it?It might be time for you to go. It might be time to change, to shine out.I want to repeat one word for you:Leave.Roll the word around on your tongue for a bit. It is a beautiful word, isn't it? So strong and forceful, the way you have always wanted to be. And you will not be alone. You have never been alone. Don't worry. Everything will still be here when you get back. It is you who will have changed.”Donald Miller - Through Painted Desserts. Liz, Zane and Patrick are all actors (bloody actors!) so they've decided to recommend podcasts with a theatrical inclination this week. Zane is all about the improvised comedy podcast Hello From The Magic Tavern, Liz flexes her musical muscles with 36 Questions: The Podcast Musical and Patrick gets into the acting process with Inside Acting. Then as always we all take turns reviewing what was recommended last week.Liz Recommends - 36 Questions: The Musical Podcasthttps://www.twoupproductions.com/36-questions"In this three-part podcast musical starring Jonathan Groff and Jessie Shelton, a couple attempts to bring their marriage back from the brink of divorce using 36 revealing questions designed to make strangers fall in love." Liz is so bloody happy this podcast exists and thinks more people trying to get their work seen and heard by the wider public should turn to the wonderful medium of podcasts rather than expecting to get Broadway money straight away. This podcast is literally a musical, just sans a stage or visual performances. The story is told with an inventive device to make all that not necessary. Just characters, with songs and a whole lot of feelings. For both: Start from the start because it's literally a musical in three acts.Link https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/36-questions-the-podcast-musical/id1248086475Pat Recommends - Inside ActingThis little number comes from Trev and AJ, two L.A. based actors who wanna get inside their craft. That's just what they do each episode, often with other actors. They've been lucky enough to host such talented fellows as J.K. Simmons and Jenna Fischer. Since he has his podcasting equipment with him and he's getting a weak WiFi signal from Burger King through the rift, he decided to host a weekly podcast from The Vermilion Minotaur where he interviews the strange people and creatures he meets. His co-hosts are Usidore, a wizard, and Chunt, a changeling currently in the form of a badger. Jonathan Groff isn't just a luminary of stage and screen. He's now a bona fide podcast star. And a really nice guy. His newest project, 36 Questions, where he plays opposite Jessie Shelton, is a podcast based on the New York Times Modern Love column titled "To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This." The story follows a couple trying to repair their broken marriage by asking each other the 36 questions that lead to love. And it's told in musical form. So it's a podcast musical. Let Me Ascertain You: The Civilians Podcast

Hi! We’re back with the second episode of Let Me Ascertain You: Sex Variants 1941 recorded live here in NYC at Joe’s Pub. This series takes its inspiration from a 1941 medical book by Dr. George W. Henry. Subtitled "A Study of Homosexual Pattern," Dr. Henry classified these case studies as homosexuals, bi-sexuals, or narcissists. A little something for everyone. In this episode we’ll start off with the case study of Irene K., played at our live show by Kate Buddeke. The evening’s MC Trey Lyford will first give us a little intro to Irene K., and his words are taken verbatim from Dr. Henry’s "general impressions" of the variant in question. Then you’ll hear "That Crazy Business" a song written by Andrea Grody about the case study Nora M. performed by Jessie Shelton and Nathan Dame. The last two performances are based on the same patient, Donald H. First actor Dan Domingues performs Donald’s own words from his personal history and we’ll follow that with a song, "The Future Looks Very Fine," written by Cesar Alvarez, and performed here by Cesar and the rest of his band The Lisps which are Sammy Tunis, Eric Farber, and Lorenzo Wolff.
