Movie of the Year
2006 - Slither

Movie of the Year

Movie of the Year: 2006Slither The Slither Podcast Brings Body Horror to the 2006 BracketThe Slither podcast episode unleashes the first true horror movie on our Movie of the Year 2006 bracket. After opening the season with Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, the Taste Buds trade metafiction for meteorites. Consequently, things get slimy fast. Ryan, Mike, and Greg welcome producer and festival programmer Drea Clark to dig into James Gunn's gleefully gross directorial debut. Together, the panel asks whether a movie full of alien slugs deserves a deep run in the bracket. Above all, they ask whether Slither has more on its mind than exploding deer and tentacled husbands.About the FilmSlither is a 2006 science fiction horror comedy written and directed by James Gunn. A meteorite crashes outside the small town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, carrying an alien parasite. The parasite infects wealthy local Grant Grant, played with squirming brilliance by Michael Rooker. Soon, Grant transforms into a tentacled monster, and slug-like creatures spread through the town. Meanwhile, police chief Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) and Grant's wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks) try to stop the invasion.Universal released the film on March 31, 2006. Notably, it flopped at the box office, grossing under $13 million against a $15 million budget. However, critics largely embraced it. Roger Ebert praised its Troma-loving spirit in his RogerEbert.com review, and the film became a cult favorite on home video. In addition, it launched the directing career that eventually gave us Guardians of the Galaxy and the new DC Universe.Guest Panelist: Drea ClarkThis week the Taste Buds welcome Drea Clark, a true film industry polymath. Drea co-hosts Maximum Film! on the Maximum Fun network, the long-running movie podcast she shares with film critic Alonso Duralde. Furthermore, her credentials behind the scenes run deep. She has served on the Sundance Film Festival programming team, led narrative feature programming at Slamdance for over a decade, spent ten years with the LA Film Festival, and curated Geena Davis's Bentonville Film Festival. As a producer, her features include The Last Time You Had Fun, Lake Los Angeles, and No Light and No Land Anywhere, the latter executive produced by Miranda July. In short, few guests are better equipped to judge a scrappy genre debut from a first time director.James Gunn as a First-Time FilmmakerBefore Slither, James Gunn was a writer with a strange resume. He cut his teeth at Troma on Tromeo and Juliet, then wrote the live action Scooby-Doo movies and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. Consequently, Slither arrived as his first chance to direct his own material. The panel debates what the film reveals about Gunn as a filmmaker. Specifically, they trace the DNA that later shows up in Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Superman. The needle drops, the found family of misfits, and the sincere heart under the gross-out gags all start here. Moreover, Drea brings a programmer's eye to the question of how debut features signal a career to come.Sex and Violence on the Slither 2006 PodcastSlither earns its R rating with enthusiasm. The Taste Buds tackle how the film weaponizes both sex and violence, often in the same scene. Grant's infection plays like a grotesque infidelity story, and the alien's reproductive plans push body horror into genuinely uncomfortable territory. However, the violence stays cartoonish enough to keep the comedy alive. The panel asks where Gunn draws that line, and whether the bathtub scene, the barn scene, and that infamous bursting body still shock today. Ultimately, the conversation lands on a bigger question. Does the film use its excess for a purpose, or is the excess the point? Is Slither an Allegory?Every great monster movie smuggles in a meaning, or so the theory goes. Therefore, the panel puts Slither on the couch. Is the film an allegory for toxic marriage, with Grant's transformation literalizing a controlling husband? Is it about small town conformity, as a hive mind absorbs an entire community? By contrast, maybe Gunn simply loves slugs and explosions, and the search for subtext misses the joke. Drea, Ryan, Mike, and Greg each stake out a position. Nevertheless, the debate keeps circling back to Starla, whose arc gives the film its surprising emotional weight.TriviaNo Movie of the Year episode is complete without Trivia. This week's round digs into Slither's production and its B-movie family tree. Expect questions about the practical effects, the casting, and the film's connections to Troma legend Lloyd Kaufman, who cameos in the movie. Additionally, the segment tests whether the panel can untangle Slither from the movies it lovingly rips off, including Night of the Creeps and Shivers. Play along and see if you can outscore the Taste Buds.Dream Blunt RotationNew season, new games. In Dream Blunt Rotation, the panel assembles the ultimate smoke circle from the world of Slither. Which characters make the cut, and which get left outside the garage? Mayor Jack MacReady seems like a chaotic invite, while Bill Pardy might be the chillest hang in Wheelsy. Meanwhile, the conversation drifts toward the cast and crew themselves. Listen to find out who earns a spot in the rotation and whose vibes get vetoed.Awards and RecommendationsThe episode closes with Awards and Recommendations, the segment where the Taste Buds hand out honors to the film's cast, crew, and creatures. Nominees this week range from Michael Rooker's fearless physical performance to the effects team behind the slugs. As a result, expect passionate cases and at least one baffling pick. The winners stay a surprise, so you will have to listen for the results. Afterward, the panel shares recommendations for what to watch next if Slither leaves you hungry for more horror comedy. Why Slither Still MattersTwenty years later, Slither looks like a turning point hiding in plain sight. It kept practical creature effects alive at a moment when Hollywood was abandoning them. Furthermore, it proved that horror comedy could carry real emotion, a balance Gunn has chased ever since. The film's box office failure also tells a story about 2006 itself, a year when audiences ignored a future superstar director. In practice, the Slither podcast episode asks the question this whole season exists to answer. Does cult status and influence make a movie a contender for the best film of 2006? Listen and judge for yourself.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 2006Movie of the Year: 2006 — Intro, Part 1Movies of 2006: The Bracket RevealTristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull StoryAll Movie of the Year episodesFAQ: Slither Podcast and FilmWhat is this episode of the Slither podcast about?Ryan, Mike, and Greg debate whether James Gunn's Slither deserves to advance in the Movie of the Year 2006 bracket. He mutates into a tentacled monster while slug-like creatures take over the town. A police chief and Grant's wife fight to stop the invasion.Who directed Slither?James Gunn wrote and directed Slither as his feature directorial debut. Full credits are on IMDb.More Questions from the Slither 2006 PodcastWas Slither a box office success? No. The film grossed under $13 million against a $15 million budget. However, strong reviews and home video sales turned it into a cult classic. Is Slither a remake? No, but it wears its influences proudly. Gunn openly drew on Night of the Creeps, Shivers, The Blob, and the Troma catalog, where he started his career.Who is the guest on this episode?Drea Clark, producer, festival programmer, and co-host of the Maximum Film! podcast on Maximum Fun.Why does Slither still matter? It launched James Gunn's directing career, championed practical effects, and perfected the horror comedy tone that countless films have imitated since. The Slither podcast episode makes the full case.

"Under the watchful eyes of Bob's Stratos and Apollo..."How do you go from being dubbed "the merchant of death" to the patron saint of human achievement? In this episode of Elton Reads A Book A Week, I explore the paradoxical life of Alfred Nobel—the man who invented dynamite and then panic-bought his way into history's good graces with a massive pile of prize money. We're diving deep into the explosive history of the Nobel Prize, from the accidental obituary that kickstarted the whole thing to the institutional dramas, bizarre omissions, and downright weird rules that keep the selection committees busy. Whether it's why there's no Nobel for math, the controversy over the Economics prize, or the fact that some laureates have actually been dead when they won, we're unpacking it all.Join me as we dissect the Nobel legacy: a Victorian-era PR masterclass that managed to turn a career in arms dealing into the world's most prestigious honor. Are we alone? In this short-isode, Elton traces the bizarre, hilarious, and occasionally unhinged history of humanity's quest for alien communication. From Frank Drake's Equation in 1961, a mathematical roadmap for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), to the times before radio, when our ideas were pure fantasy: he dives into the wild ideas and scams. Like, the 19th-century scheme to burn massive geometric messages onto the surface of Mars using a gargantuan, laser-focused mirror. For real. From those ambitious, largely insane, early visual signals to the iconic messages we've strapped to spaceships—we've spent centuries leaving a very expensive voicemail for an unknown recipient. We also explore the cosmic artifacts and phenomena that made us stop and whisper, "Is someone calling us?" Learn the true story behind the Black Knight Satellite (spoiler: it's an escaped blanket), the enduring mystery of the Wow! Signal, and the strange case of 'Oumuamua, the cigar-shaped interstellar visitor. Finally, we confront the ultimate cosmic buzzkill: the Fermi Paradox. If the galaxy should be crowded, "Where is everybody?" We discuss the terrifying ethical debate over intentional messaging (METI) and the chilling logic of the Dark Forest Theory. Tune in to find out why, even in crushing silence, we simply cannot stop shouting "Hello?" into the dark.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonBuy Me A Coffee!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!Join the Discord server!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Martians, New Yorkers...again, TalkToAliens.com users, UFO conspiracy theorists, etc.A special thanks to Diedrich Bader and Jenna Fischer for all their inspiration.Tags: Drake Equation, Fermi Paradox, SETI, METI, Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Frank Drake, Cosmic Silence, Voyager Golden Records, Pioneer Plaques, Arecibo Message, Alien Communication, Interstellar Communication, Charles Cros, Wow! Get ready to dive back into the neon-soaked streets of L.A. and beyond! In this episode of Elton Reads A Book A Week, Elton takes on the ambitious crime epic Heat 2—the novel that somehow manages to be both a prequel and a sequel to Michael Mann's legendary 1995 film.Ever wondered what made Neil McCauley so cold or how Vincent Hanna became a "hyper-caffeinated" detective with a failing personal life? This episode breaks down the twelve-year arc that takes these iconic characters from the shadows of Chicago to the heat of Paraguay and Mexico. Elton also digs into the fascinating true story that inspired the original film, involving a real-life high-stakes meeting in a Chicago deli between a meticulous detective and a professional thief who lived by a 30-second rule.Expect plenty of Elton's signature "cinephile" rants, some very questionable theories about whether Chicago actually exists, and a recurring battle with his producer, [BLEEP], over whether the show needs more machine-gun sound effects. It's a deep dive into world-traveling heists, burning wreckage, and the "urban opera" of Michael Mann's universe.Listen in for:The Real Heat: The gritty 1960s true crime origins of the McCauley/Hanna rivalry.A Master at Work: A look at director Michael Mann's journey from driving cabs to "engineering" cinematic masterpieces.Behind the Pages: How a film director and a thriller novelist teamed up to expand a world millions already loved.Just... maybe don't take any actual life advice from the heist parts.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!Join the Discord server!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Clowns...again, flatulence, New York...again, those that get easily tricked, Penthouse Forum, and much, much more.A special thanks to Diedrich Bader and Jenna Fischer for all their inspiration."Expanding on the lives of characters like Vincent Hanna, Neil McCauley, and Chris Shiherlis before and after the movie's events. The book follows the formative years of the main characters and continues the story with new heists and characters, exploring their lives in the years leading up to and following the film's iconic bank robbery. It's known for its cinematic action, rich characterization, and fast-paced, hard-boiled style, becoming a #1 New York Times bestseller. "Heat 2, Michael Mann, Meg Gardiner, Heat Movie Sequel, Vincent Hanna, Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Crime Fiction, Heist Novel, North Hollywood Shootout, Chuck Adamson, Chicago Crime History, Belden's Deli, Urban Opera, Heat 1995, Movie Trivia, Literary Analysis, Book Review, Comedy Podcast, Elton Reads A Book A Week, Pop Culture Commentary, GTA V Inspiration, The Dark Knight Influence, Miami Vice, Crime Thriller Books, Cinema History, Hard-Boiled Fiction.#Heat2 #MichaelMann #Heist #BookReview #ComedyPodcast #Podcast #Cinema #TrueCrime #NeilMcCauley #VincentHanna #Literature #CrimeFiction #ActionMovies #EltonReadsABookAWeek #MovieHistory #Sequel Review #books #reading #booktok #comedy #Heat #movie

Do you ever feel like you're doing everything "right" for your sleep, yet you're still waking up exhausted? In this episode, we're peeling back the covers on the most persistent sleep myths that are sabotaging your rest.We start with the big one: the terrifying warning that waking a sleepwalker could be fatal. We'll dive into why this myth exists, what actually happens to a sleepwalking brain, and the real dangers you should be worried about instead. Then, we tackle the "Sleep Debt" delusion. Can you really "catch up" on sleep over the weekend, or are you just digging a deeper hole for your circadian rhythm? We're breaking down the biological reality of REM cycles and why your brain isn't a bank account you can just balance on Sunday morning. In this episode, we also explore:The 8-Hour Rule: Why this "magic number" might actually be a modern invention of the Industrial Revolution rather than a biological necessity. The Nightcap Trap: Why that glass of wine might help you fall asleep faster but is actually a chemical "wrecking ball" for your sleep quality.Blue Light & Sleep Hygiene: the TikTok "hacks" from the peer-reviewed science of getting a better night's rest.Whether you're a lifelong insomniac, a chronic snoozer, or just curious about what happens when the lights go out, this deep dive will change the way you look at your mattress. So, this week I decided to take a break from the heavy lifting of a full novel to look at something equally weird: why the places we live have such bizarre "official" handles. Honestly, if you actually look into where state nicknames come from, it's rarely a group of dignified founders sitting around a table. It's usually just a bunch of 19th-century dudes making fun of each other until someone decided to put the insult on a license plate. What we're getting into:The Original Trolls: We talk about how a place like Missouri ended up with the "Show-Me" label. Spoiler: It wasn't a compliment. It was basically a way of calling people from the Ozarks a little too "slow on the uptake" to understand a joke. The Nutmeg Scam: Connecticut is out here calling itself the "Constitution State" now, but back in the day, they were the "Nutmeg State" because their traders were legendary for selling fake, wooden spices to unsuspecting tourists. It's basically the 1800s version of a crypto rug-pull.The Gopher Pivot: You've got Minnesota, which somehow turned a mean-spirited political cartoon about corrupt politicians into a cute mascot. It's like if we started calling a state "The Dumpster Fire State" and then fifty years later everyone was wearing Dumpster Fire hats at football games.Bird Identity Politics: Why is Alabama obsessed with a "Yellowhammer"? And since when is a "Blue Hen" the peak of toughness in Delaware? We're looking at the weirdly specific wildlife obsession that defines half the South.Silver vs. Dirt: Nevada's constant struggle between wanting to sound like a treasure chest and admitting it's mostly just covered in sagebrush. From the "Dark and Bloody Ground" of Kentucky to the "Sunshine" branding that hides a lot of corporate secrets, we're digging into the labels we inherited. It's a messy, hilarious, and totally nonsensical look at American self-branding.Give it a listen, stop yelling at traffic for ten minutes, and then go read a book. Seriously. Keep the brain cells firing, folks.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!Join the Discord server!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Asian Blaxploitation actors, characters, etc., Alaska, Nebraska, well, all the states mentioned, if I'm being honest.A special thanks to Diedrich Bader and Jenna Fischer for all their inspiration.

Lethem flips the script on traditional "end of the world" tropes.A "Nuzzle" Worthy Discussion: Glen Nuzzle brings his signature style to the table, helping Elton navigate the surreal landscapes and meta-commentary that only Lethem can provide."It's a story about the stories we tell ourselves to survive, and what happens when those stories are delivered by a man in a giant metal mole-car."Whether you're a fan of high-concept literary sci-fi or you just enjoy hearing two guys talk about the absurdity of a nuclear-powered drill in a potato field, this episode is for you.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!Join the Discord server!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Clowns...again, flatulence, New York...again, those that get easily tricked, Penthouse Forum, and much, much more.A special thanks to Diedrich Bader and Jenna Fischer for all their inspiration.

Welcome to your daily comedy podcast, where absolutely nothing makes sense and we like it that way.Today's show kicks off with a story that nobody asked for but everyone will remember forever: a 73-year-old former born-again Christian reinventing herself as an escort named Busty Granny. She spent decades in prayer and celibacy, then hit 57, downloaded the internet, and said “oh… THIS is what we've been missing.” Now she's got clients young enough to still have homework and zero interest in OnlyFans because, quote, that sounds boring. Inspirational? Traumatizing? Both. Then we get into the most depressing career math of all time: a woman casually sings seven words into her phone for a Dr Pepper jingle and walks away with $2 million, while the rest of us are out here working full-time jobs and eating gas-station sandwiches. Naturally, this leads to the crew trying to invent jingles for every brand that will absolutely never call back.Somehow that spirals into one of the most fun debates we've had in a while — the biggest debut albums of all time. We're talking massive numbers, MTV miracles, and how one 4am spin turned a “failed” album into a 50-million-copy monster. Along the way we argue, forget basic facts, remember them loudly, and realize radio used to be way more powerful than TikTok will ever admit.Movies get dragged (respectfully… mostly), Brendan Fraser gets the comeback love he deserves, and we debate whether seeing a movie in a theater automatically adds two letter grades just because popcorn exists. In Crap on Celebrities, we hit everything from band lawsuits and surprise documentaries to tour dropouts, concert ticket chaos, and some genuinely heartbreaking but honest conversations about aging, memory, and how terrifying it is to not know what's happening inside your own brain. We also celebrate birthdays, overshare existential dread, and somehow end the show discussing a literal geyser of poop water blasting into the Potomac River — because if we're going to spiral, we're doing it together. It's another daily comedy podcast episode packed with weird news, pop culture, dark laughs, and moments where we all pause and go, “Wait… are we okay?”Spoiler: probably not. But at least we're funny.MUSICMotley Crue has officially won its heated legal battle against former guitarist Mick Mars. Lainey Wilson sure has kept herself busy. It was just announced that Netflix has officially acquired the new documentary "Lainey Wilson: Keepin' Country Cool". It drops on April 22nd. Two more artists have dropped out of the 2026 Rock the Country Festival. Morgan Wade and Carter Faith are no longer part of the lineup. Is your career in a tailspin? Have you been wandering blindly from one dead-end job to the next, hoping the universe will throw you a bone? Well, great news—wealthy CEOs are here to tell you how to fix your life! In this week's episode of Elton Reads A Book A Week, Elton dives into Fortune Zoom: Surprising Ways to Supercharge Your Career—a book where Fortune Magazine corrals its “40 Under 40” wunderkinds to dispense what they believe passes for practical career advice. Is it useful? Maybe. Is it relatable? Absolutely not. But does Elton's brain snap in increasingly entertaining ways as he tries to make sense of it? Oh, very much so.From Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh's crusade for “company culture,” to closets full of costumes for adults, to Marissa Mayer yeeting herself from Google into Yahoo's hot seat—you'll hear what these innovators supposedly did to “supercharge” their careers, and how you (a normal human with bills) are supposedly meant to do the same.Packed with maniacal rants, sharp satire, and the occasional inspirational nugget buried under layers of skepticism, this episode explores the realities of hard work, risk-taking, and the glossy mythmaking behind success stories. Plus, Elton tries to decide whether this advice is motivational, delusional, or just really good comedy fodder.Come listen to Elton's brain break. It's educational… in its own way.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book Seller - Sorry, no listing for the indies. How We Spent the Summer | S2E1 "Where Were We?” Season two of How We Made Your Mother kicks off with a big announcement: the show has officially joined the Office Ladies Network, thanks to a friendship between Josh Radnor and Jenna Fischer. Josh and Craig reminisce about filming “Where Were We,” the How I Met Your Mother season two premiere, breaking down the challenge of picking up right after Ted and Robin's rain-soaked kiss and Marshall's heartbreak. They dig into the emotional realism of post-breakup depression, the iconic “When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead” line, and behind-the-scenes stories about George Clinton's cameo, Robin's gun joke, and Neil Patrick Harris's precision physical comedy. The episode also covers the show's evolution, season-two adjustments (including the brighter red couch), and fan questions about serialization, background actors, and hiatus memories, before closing with a touching letter from a 15-year-old fan in Germany about how HIMYM brings her hope. This week we're releasing another episode from the Patreon vault! We discuss the 2007 comedy musical Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story written by Judd Apatow & Jake Kasden. This movie stars John C. Reily, Jenna Fischer, Tim Meadows, Kristen Wiig and a slew of some of the best comedic actors. "Following a childhood tragedy, Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly) follows a long and winding road to music stardom. Dewey perseveres through changing musical styles, an addiction to nearly every drug known and bouts of uncontrollable rage, until finally, he wins the heart, but not necessarily the body, of his loyal backup singer, Darlene (Jenna Fischer)."The film is very much a product of parody for such films like Walk The Line, Ray, and many other musician based biopic films. The boys discuss Gooning, The Goon, and Goon June. Meanwhile it's revealed that Cody jizzes wine. John C. Reilly is actually singing in this film and is also a blue/country singer with his own band. Who's funnier, John C. Reilly or Will Ferrell? He also has a lot of range with such projects as Boogie Nights, Gangs of New York, & Winning Time. Anthony reveals this is his favorite movie. The comedy is so well written that even the dumb jokes are not just pulled out of the air but well crafted. John C. Reilly is capable of crying on command. Anthony shares a ghostly story that occurred in his basement. Did LSD open Anthony to being susceptible to being possessed by the devil? It's hands on sight for any guy named Schuyler! Picture this: It's the 1960s, your Welsh hometown is dying, and everyone's telling you to accept reality and move to London. Instead, you read about American libraries closing down and think, "You know what? Opportunity." So you buy crates of abandoned books, ship them to Wales, open a bookshop in an old fire station, purchase a medieval castle, and turn it into a 24-hour honor-system bookstore. Then, for your next trick, you declare your town an independent kingdom and crown yourself monarch. The media goes insane, tourism explodes, and suddenly your "joke" has spawned dozens of copycat book towns worldwide and an international literary festival that attracts more visitors than your entire town's population. Meet Richard Booth, the Oxford-educated madman who proved that sometimes the most ridiculous ideas are also the most brilliant. This is the story of Hay-on-Wye: the town that books built, the kingdom that never was but somehow still exists, and the beautiful audacity of believing that literature can literally save the world—one used paperback at a time.GET A BOOK ABOUT IT HERE: To support independent book shops use this link.Or to just use Amazon use this link.BECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!Join the Discord server!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Pee-pees, horse politicians, Pac-man, decent people, Hay-on-Wye, the 1960s, fictional pregnancies, etc.A special thanks to Diedrich Bader and Jenna Fischer for all their inspiration.[Books, True Story, Biography, Welsh History, Independent Bookstores, Small Town Success, Entrepreneurship, Literature, Tourism, Medieval History, Book Towns, Hay-on-Wye, Richard Booth, Hay Festival, Used Books, Secondhand Books, Literary Tourism, Book Collecting, Wales Travel, Castle History, Eccentric, Self-Made King, Visionary, Maverick, Underdog Story, Against All Odds, Audacious, Unconventional Success, Supporting Local Business, Anti-Corporate, Community Revival, Sustainable Business, Cultural Preservation, Historic Preservation, Honor System, Trust-Based Economy, Comedy Podcast, Educational Entertainment, History Podcast, British History, European History, Business Success Story, Cultural Stories, Travel Stories, Inspiring, Funny, Unbelievable, Motivational, Quirky, Heartwarming, Revolutionary, Transformational, "How books saved a town", "Real life kingdom", "Medieval castle bookstore", "Honor system bookshop", "Self-proclaimed king"]

Brian Wilson had a gift, and a curse. His mind worked in a magically musical way, in that he could "see" whole, elaborate songs all in his head. It also allowed him to manifest those wonderful ideas in the real world, via the help of his family and friends. It would lead him to cofound a group that would change pop music forever, and have his particular genius recognized the world over as a unique and singular voice in the pantheon of singer-songwriters and composers. His mind was also his worst enemy that would send him spiraling into madness and self loathing that he would turn to drugs and nefarious characters for help, eventually becoming a recluse and musical oddity."As a cofounding member of the Beach Boys in the 1960s, Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless popular music ever recorded, forever expanding the possibilities of pop songwriting. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and--finally--thriving. Now he weighs in on the sources of his creative inspiration and on his struggles, the exhilarating highs and the debilitating lows. Whether he's talking about his childhood, his bandmates, or his own inner demons, Wilson's story, told in his own voice and in his own way, unforgettably illuminates the man behind the music, working through the turbulence and discord to achieve, at last, a new harmony."Join Elton as he ventures through Brian Wilson's second attempt at a memoir, and listen to him wrestle with guilt about taking advantage of the dead. Elton's diving into Arthur C. Clarke's absolute acid trip of a book (okay, maybe just the ending), "2001: A Space Odyssey" – you know, the one with the soft spoken computer that murders it's crew to keep a secret? [SPOILERS] And those mysterious black rectangles that basically trolled humanity for millions of years. Here's what's happening this episode:Who was Arthur C. Clarke anyway? Turns out the guy invented the satellites that keep your phone connected to the world...in the 1940s. He even predicted we'd all be doom-scrolling on the internet way before anyone knew what WiFi was. Plus, he was part of sci-fi's holy trinity with Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. So, a nerd circle jerk. Well, maybe not...THAT, but a pretty important guy. He did well for guy who started out fiddling with radar during WWII.Join Elton as he walks through this wild ride from cavemen discovering tools to humans becoming space gods. There's evolution, mystery, and murder A.I., and honestly? A lot of nerdly nerd stuff that'll make your brain EXPAND in the best way. Don't worry – Elton takes a brunt of the load. The Clarke-Kubrick team-up: Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick basically wrote the book and movie at the same time, which sounds like a nightmare but somehow worked. They turned a short story called "The Sentinel" (Arthur hates that) and turn it into the most mind-f*cking sci-fi movie ever made, though it wasn't all dry humping and champagne.Whether you're into classic sci-fi, love a good book-to-movie story, or just want to understand why HAL 9000 is everyone's least favorite AI, this episode's got you covered. Fair warning: you might have an existential crisis. So, go easy on the sci-fi.GET THE BOOK: From AmazonFrom an Indie Book SellerBECOME AN Elton Reads A Book A Week CONTRIBUTOR HERE:Elton Reads A Book A Week PatreonTips!SOCIAL MEDIA! This is the LINK TREE!EMAIL: eltonreadsabookaweek@gmail.comThe following section is reserved for the people, places, things, and more that Elton probably offended in this episode--THE APOLOGIES SECTION: Sci-fi fans, nerds, Arthur C.
