Ein grosses Talent war Kevin Fiala immer schon. Der hochbegabte Stürmer aus der Juniorenabteilung des EHC Uzwil  landete wie prophezeit in der NHL. Doch in der besten Eishockey-Liga konnte Fiala zunächst nicht immer sein Potenzial abrufen. Als "Rebell" und "schwieriger Fall" stand er sich oft selber im Weg.Umso bemerkenswerter ist der Werdegang Fialas in den letzten Jahren. Mittlerweile ist er nicht nur ein Top-Leistungsträger bei den Los Angeles Kings. Er beeindruckt auch mit seiner Reife neben dem Eisfeld und als Spieler mit riesiger Hingabe für die Schweizer Nationalmannschaft. Sowohl 2024, als auch 2025 reiste er unter alles andere als normalen Umständen an die WM - beim ersten Mal unmittelbar nach der Geburt seines ersten Kindes, ein Jahr später kurz nachdem er und seine Ehefrau Jessica ihr zweites Kind verloren hatten.Fiala ist in der Schweiz geboren. Seine Eltern sind Tschechen, seine Ehefrau Schwedin, er lernte sie als Junior in ihrem Heimatland kennen. Seine Traumdestination ist Los Angeles, wo er 2022 einen 7-Jahres-Vertrag unterschrieb. Waar is alle materie uit opgebouwd, en welke wetten volgen die deeltjes om alles op aarde en de rest van het heelal vorm te geven? Wat is antimaterie, en wat heeft quantumtheorie daarmee te maken? In Reis naar de kern neemt Ivo van Vulpen, deeltjesonderzoeker bij CERN in Genève en verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, je mee langs al deze grote vragen. Over Ivo Ivo van Vulpen is als deeltjesfysicus werkzaam aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, het Nationaal Instituut voor subatomaire fysica (Nikhef) en hij doet onderzoek bij de deeltjesversneller (Large Hadron Collider) bij CERN in Genève. Hij is hoogleraar Wetenschapscommunicatie, in het bijzonder betreffende de natuurkunde, aan de Universiteit Leiden. In 2018 verscheen zijn eerste boek: De melodie van de natuur. Lees ook dit artikel op BNR.nl Transcript aflevering Hoewel die reis naar de wereld van het allerkleinste een avontuur is met een enorm rijk verleden (die ons veel nieuwe inzichten en toepassingen heeft gebracht) is het belangrijk om niet té lang in het verleden te blijven hangen. Laten we de stap maken naar het nu, naar het onderzoek van de 21e eeuw. Wat zijn bijvoorbeeld de laatste grote ontdekkingen geweest en wat zijn de raadsels waar wij als wetenschappers op dit moment van wakker liggen. In de vorige aflevering hebben we het Standaard Model leren kennen, dat bouwwerk dat zowel alle bouwstenen als natuurkrachten bevat. Het blootleggen hiervan is een fe-no-me-nale prestatie, maar hoe mooi en stevig het Standaard Model ook leek, het bleek helemaal geen stevig fundament te hebben en bovendien was het alsof het gebouw er wel stond, maar er geen cement tussen de stenen zat. In deze vierde aflevering van onze reis gaan we op zoek naar dat onzichtbare cement dat de boel bij elkaar houdt. Het blijkt inderdaad te bestaan. Het draait allemaal om het beroemde Higgs-deeltje. Wat maakte dit idee nou zo bijzonder dat wetenschappers van over de hele wereld, in dit geval bij cern, het Europees centrum voor deeltjesfysica, er samen naar op zoek zijn gegaan. En waarom heeft het meer dan 60 jaar geduurd om het te vinden? Natuurlijk was het mooi dat het een Nobelprijs opleverde, maar nog belangrijker voor ons als wetenschappers was dat het ervoor zorgde dat het Standaard Model vanaf dat moment wél stevig stond. Hierdoor veranderde niet alleen de manier waarop we naar de natuur keken, maar het zorgde er ook voor dat we ’s nachts niet meer wakker lagen van de vraag: ‘Hoe zit het nou eigenlijk echt?’. Om het probleem en de oplossing van Peter Higgs beter te begrijpen moeten we eerst kort van het hoofdpad af. We slaan een klein zijpaadje in zodat ik even kort wat kan vertellen over de manier waarop natuurkundigen hun theorieën vormgeven. Als je probeert het gedrag van mensen te begrijpen en te voorspellen dan kom je er snel achter dat dat enorm complex is. Menselijk gedrag hangt van ontzettend veel dingen af zoals leeftijd, geslacht, uiterlijk en karaktereigenschappen, maar ook van de geschreven, en ongeschreven, regels van de cultuur van het bedrijf of land waarin een ontmoeting plaatsvindt. Psychologie is een ingewikkeld en belangrijk vak. Wij natuurkundigen doen hetzelfde, maar dan met de natuur in plaats van de mens. En wij hebben het veel makkelijker dan de psychologen omdat de deeltjes maar een klein aantal eigenschappen hebben en de natuurwetten universeel en onveranderlijk zijn. De taal die wij gebruiken om de regels en het verhaal van de natuur te beschrijven bestaat niet uit woorden en zinnen, maar uit wiskundige formules. Het grote voordeel daarvan is dat het een universele taal is zonder ambiguïteiten. Tegelijkertijd is het ook een taal die weinig mensen buiten de wetenschap beheersen. En dat is jammer, want daarmee blijft de betekenis en schoonheid van het verhaal verborgen. Een voorbeeld: als ik je een Japanse tekst laat zien en je vraag of het een regel is uit de Japanse belastingalmanak, een regel uit een vertaald gedicht van Pablo Neruda of een uit het kinderboek Nijntje aan zee dan zeg je waarschijnlijk ‘Die vraag kan ik niet beantwoorden, want ik kan geen Japans schrift niet lezen.’ Tegelijkertijd weet je ook dat Japanse schoolkinderen de vraag wel kunnen beantwoorden en de regel zonder probleem voor je kunnen vertalen. In het geval van Nijntje is zo’n simpele vertaling genoeg, maar als het een gedicht of verhaal is dan is er meer nodig om door te dringen tot de essentie van wat er verteld wordt: context, cultuur, inzichten. Hetzelfde geldt voor formules. Ook die komen in allerlei soorten en maten: van trivialiteiten tot formulering met onpeilbare dieptes en verborgen inzichten. Om een voorbeeld te geven, pas ja-ren nadat Einstein zijn formules over de zwaartekracht had opgeschreven bleek dat het heelal altijd zou uitdijen en dat er zwarte gaten zouden moeten bestaan. Ook bij de formules van het Standaard Model werd er iets ongemakkelijks zichtbaar. Meer concreet: het bleek dat volgens de theorie deeltjes geen massa mochten hebben. En dat is een probleem. Een heel groot probleem. Deeltjes hebben namelijk gewoon wel massa. Dat zien we elke dag als we op de weegschaal staan, maar iets breder: als deeltjes geen massa zouden hebben dan waren ze in ons heelal nooit samengeklonterd onder invloed van de zwaartekracht tot de sterren en planeten die we nu hebben. En dan waren wij er ook zelf nooit geweest, want in zo’n massaloze wereld beweegt alles met de lichtsnelheid en kunnen atomen niet bestaan. Om een lang verhaal kort te maken: De Britse natuurkundige Peter Higgs ontdekte dat er een manier was om de theorie iets aan te passen zodat deeltjes toch massa konden hebben. Een oplossing die het bouwwerk stevig bij elkaar hield: het onzichtbare cement. De essentie van zijn idee, dat bekend staat als het Higgs mechanisme, is dat de ruimte, het hele heelal dus, gevuld is met iets dat we als mensen niet kunnen ruiken, zien, proeven, horen of voelen, maar waarvan deeltjes wél merken dat het er is. Voor deeltjes is dat Higgs veld net als wat water is voor vissen. Het is overal om ze heen en sommige vissen bewegen makkelijker door het water dan andere. Dat is ook precies wat sommige deeltjes licht maakt en andere zwaar. Een mooie oplossing voor het probleem van massa, …. maar ja, hoe gingen we bewijzen dat dit ook echt waar is. Je kunt natuurlijk van alles verzinnen. De zoektocht naar dit zogenaamde Higgs-veld dat in de lege ruimte verborgen zou zitten had enorm veel voeten in de aarde. Een voorspelling was dat als dit veld inderdaad bestond er in deeltjesversnellers naast alle bekende deeltjes heel af en toe nog één ander deeltje geproduceerd zou worden. Een deeltje met een unieke vingerafdruk. Als dat zo is dan zouden we dat wel kunnen vinden natuurlijk, want laat deeltjes zoeken in botsingen nou net onze core business zijn. Toch zou het nog zo’n vijftig jaar duren voor alle ingrediënten aanwezig waren: deeltjesversnellers met genoeg energie, detectieapparatuur die nauwkeurig genoeg was en, niet onbelangrijk, het samenwerken van duizenden wetenschappers vanuit de hele wereld. Zo’n plek bestaat en rond 2010 viel alles op zijn plek. Dé plek waar deeltjesfysici van over de hele wereld al meer dan vijftig jaar samenkomen om onderzoek te doen naar de wereld van het allerkleinste is cern, het Europees onderzoekscentrum voor de deeltjesfysica in de buurt van Genève. Het is iets meer dan een vierkante kilometer groot en ligt tussen de stad en de laatste uitlopers van het Jura-gebergte. Een plek met een haast mythische status, maar het is tegelijk ook gewoon een Science Park zoals er zoveel zijn in de wereld. Een plek waar elk jaar honderden promovendi opgeleid worden en waar wetenschappers van over de hele wereld samenkomen om, vrij van politiek, samen te werken en te overleggen. Zelf was ik vrij snel verkocht na mijn eerste kennismaking met cern. Ik werd geselecteerd als cern-zomerstudent. Een life changing experience waarbij mijn wereld in één klap groeide van Utrecht en Nederland naar de hele wereld. Elke zomer komen er namelijk vanuit elke land dat aangesloten is bij CERN een paar studenten drie maanden naar Genève om daar les te krijgen van de toppers in het vakgebied en om mee te draaien in een ‘echte’ onderzoeksgroep. Ineens werkte ik in de groep van een vrolijke Noor met een Italiaanse technicus en zat ik in de collegebanken en bij de lunch met studenten uit Noorwegen, Griekenland, Zweden en Portugal warm te eten: Espen, Georgios, Anna en João: de wereld in het klein. Ik vond het schitterend! Studenten die net als ik ook enorm van dat ene stukje natuurkunde hielden waardoor de culturele en taalverschillen als sneeuw voor de zon verdwenen. Voor mij is cern de belichaming van de ongekende mogelijkheden als we wereldwijd samenwerken aan een gedeelde droom. Het heeft daarmee een rol die groter is dan alleen het onderzoek zelf en ik ben altijd enorm trots dat ik daar deel van uit mag maken. Om het Higgs deeltje te kunnen maken, als het überhaupt bestaat natuurlijk, moet je met enorm veel energie deeltjes op elkaar botsen. En dat komt goed uit, want op CERN staat de krachtigste deeltjesversneller op aarde: de Large Hadron Collider, de LHC. Het is een 27 kilometer lange cirkelvormige versneller in een tunnel 100 meter onder de grond. Die tunnel kun je qua grootte goed vergelijken met een metro-tunnel. De protonen zelf draaien in wolkjes in een kleine buis hun rondjes: één buis waarin de protonen linksom draaien en één waarin de protonen rechtsom draaien. Er is een klein stukje waar de protonen een klein zetje krijgen en de rest van de tunnel staat bomvol magneten die zorgen dat de magneten keurig een rondje draaien in hun buis om vervolgens weer terug te komen bij de plek waar we ze nóg een zetje kunnen geven. Als je in die tunnel staat zie je die buizen trouwens zelf niet omdat ze verstopt zitten in grote supergeleidende magneten die allemaal afgekoeld moeten worden tot bijna het absolute nulpunt. Door de tegen elkaar in draaiende wolkjes protonen op sommige plekken in de ring door het oog van een naald te sturen moeten ze haast wel botsen. Het is op die punten dat er nieuwe deeltjes gemaakt worden en het zal jullie niet verbazen dat we op die plekken grote ondergrondse hallen hebben uitgegraven om er onze grote fototoestellen te plaatsen. Ik heb eerder verteld dat we van alle brokstukken die de detector bereiken kunnen achterhalen welk deeltje het was, welke richting hij op vloog en welke energie hij had. We gebruiken die brokstukken vervolgens om, net als paleontologen met dinosaurussen, de zware kortlevende deeltjes die in de botsing gemaakt zijn te reconstrueren. Elk met hun eigen vingerafdruk. In ons geval dus op zoek naar tekenen van het Higgs-deeltje. Zo’n detector om botsingen te bekijken wordt niet door CERN zelf gemaakt trouwens. CERN zelf zorgt alleen voor de versneller en de infrastructuur en het is aan samenwerkingsverbanden tussen universiteiten en onderzoeksinstituten van over de hele wereld om samen zo’n experiment vorm te geven. Het experiment waar ik zelf aan werk heet ATLAS. Het is een van de experimenten die het HIggs deeltje ontdekt hebben en we zijn druk bezig om alle eigenschappen van het HIggs deeltje in kaart te brengen. Zelf ben ik aan het uitzoeken hoe lang het HIggs deeltje zelf eigenlijk leeft. En geloof het of niet, maar vandaag, op de dag dat we dit opnemen, publiceren we ons resultaat, maar dat is weer een ander verhaal. Het ATLAS experiment is een samenwerking tussen een paar duizend wetenschappers en dat zoiets überhaupt bij elkaar blijft is op zichzelf al een klein wonder. Waar een groot bedrijf vaak sterk hiërarchisch georganiseerd is om efficiënt te kunnen opereren moet hier een organisatie van tweeduizend hoogopgeleide mensen opgebouwd worden die in de basis bestaat uit groepen van tien tot twintig personen. Het gaat om een hoop geld en we moeten goed verantwoorden, zowel naar buiten als voor onszelf, hoe we gemeenschappelijke keuzes maken over de technologie en hoe we de data zo goed mogelijk analyseren. Wie wordt de baas en welke bevoegdheden heeft die persoon? cern houdt bij het uitbesteden van werk aan de industrie de verdeling over de landen goed in de gaten zodat die ook profiteren en ook in de experimenten zelf is balans het sleutelwoord. Ook de sociologie is niet triviaal. Want hoe ga je om met cultuurverschillen. Hoe zorg je dat een Japanse promotiestudent ideeën kan uitwisselen en samen kan werken met een senior Duitse professor en hoe laat je mensen ‘constructief’ samenwerken in een zeer competitieve omgeving? Hoe zorg je dat elk land ook een eigen zichtbaarheid en identiteit houdt en hoe ga je de leiderschapsposities invullen? Een strakke hiërarchie is ook niet altijd de meest geschikte opzet. Bij veel deelonderzoeken gaan twee of meer groepen afzonderlijk aan de slag. Dat lijkt zeer inefficiënt, en dat is het inderdaad ook wel, maar door parallel te werken worden fouten vermeden en is zorgvuldigheid gewaarborgd omdat je elkaar zo controleert. Er ontstaan op die manier ook verschillende oplossingen voor specifieke problemen en komen we samen sneller vooruit. Het maakt ook dat er ruimte is voor mensen om een gek idee na te jagen. En vreemd genoeg zijn het vaak die out-of-the-box ideeën die eigenlijk helemaal niet kunnen, die een doorbraak geven en ook weer interessant zijn voor de industrie. Het zijn nieuwe technieken die commercieel vaak nog niet interessant zijn, maar wel een uitdaging vormen en zo een katalysator zijn voor nieuwe ideeën en projecten. Maar hoe vind je dat Higgs-deeltje dan precies? Wat is dan die unieke vingerafdruk waar je naar op zoek bent in die botsingen? De voorspelling zegt dat het Higgs-deeltje, als het bestaat, heel kort leeft en daarna uit elkaar valt in andere deeltjes. Dat kan op verschillende manieren en onze strategie was om ons te richten op twee vrij unieke en zeer duidelijk herkenbare signalen: de specifieke gevallen waarin het Higgs-deeltje uit elkaar valt in vier muon deeltjes of twee lichtdeeltjes. Hoewel dit allebei vrij zeldzaam is, zijn deze makkelijk te herkennen in de detector tussen de miljarden andere botsingen. De kans dat er een Higgs-deeltje gemaakt wordt in een botsing is enorm klein, dus je zult veel botsingen moeten bekijken. Het lijkt zo makkelijk als ik zo opschrijf: zoek naar botsingen met vier muon deeltjes of twee lichtflitsjes en bekijk of je er meer ziet dan je zou verwachten van de voorspelling waarin het Higgs-deeltje niet bestaat. En als je hebt vastgesteld dat er echt een overschot is, overtuig jezelf er dan van dat die ‘extra’ botsingen inderdaad van een Higgs-deeltje afkomstig zijn. Maar dat is nog best tricky. Het aan elkaar knopen van de signalen van de verschillende detectoren, het selecteren van de juiste botsingen en de interpretatie ervan is een karwei dat honderden deeltjesfysici meer dan tien jaar heeft beziggehouden. Zo gebeuren er per seconde zo’n miljard botsingen in de detector, maar je kunt er elke seconde maar zo’n 1000 op de computer opslaan. Hoe maak je elke seconde weer de beslissing welke foto’s je wel en niet bewaart? En hoe zeker weet je dat je geen fout maakt? En hoe zeker weet je eigenlijk dat je echt lichtdeeltjes zit te tellen en niet andere deeltjes die er heel erg lijken en duizenden malen vaker geproduceerd worden. Net als de technologie pusht dit ook de ontwikkeling op het gebied van computertechnologie, algoritmes, data-transfer en data-analyse. De gedistribueerde computing die we nu zo normaal vinden een sterk fundament heeft op CERN en het is niet voor niets dat fabrikanten maar al te graag samenwerken met onze tak van wetenschap bij het testen van nieuwe technologie. In de eerste twee jaar dat de Large Hadron Collider draaide zochten we in de botsingen allerlei combinaties van deeltjes. Werkte onze apparatuur wel zoals we dachten en zagen we de deeltjes terug waarvan we wisten dat we ze zouden maken. Maar de meeste aandacht ging natuurlijk uit naar botsingen met vier muonen of twee fotonen. Het was echt fantastisch toen we merkten dat het leek of er een overschot was aan deze speciale botsingen, al was het wel een zenuwslopende periode. Je moet wachten tot je zeker bent van je zaak (een onterechte claim kost je namelijk je wetenschappelijke reputatie), maar je weet dat er een concurrerend experiment ook druk op zoek is en net zo graag als jij de ontdekking wil claimen. En echt niemand herinnert zich de nummer twee, zeker niet als er onsterfelijkheid op het spel staat. De laatste weken in aanloop naar het grote deeltjes-congres van 2012 waren enorm hectisch. Een van de ontwerpers van het programma dat het mogelijk maakte om alle gegevens te verwerken en te bepalen hoe waarschijnlijk het nou is dat er nou een Higgs-deeltje verborgen zit in de data was mijn kantoorgenoot op het Nikhef hier in Amsterdam, Wouter Verkerke. Hoewel weinig mensen het geloven was het resultaat pas een paar dagen voor de bijeenkomst bekend. Het signaal was er en gaf een consistent beeld. En ook onze concurrent, het CMS experiment, trok dezelfde conclusie: Peter Higgs had gelijk! De lege ruimte was inderdaad niet leeg. Er was een Higgs-veld dat op elke plek in de ruimte aanwezig was en dat deeltjes hun massa gaf. Het mooist werd deze nieuwe realiteit omschreven door Robbert Dijkgraaf die zei: ‘Het is als een vis die ontdekt dat hij in het water leeft’. Kortom, we did it! Een zoektocht van meer dan vijftig jaar afsluiten met de ontdekking van het Higgs deeltje zelf was echt geweldig en het was een onwaarschijnlijk voorrecht om hier deel van uit te mogen maken. De dag na de ontdekking, werden alle natuurkundigen natuurlijk in een roes wakker, maar al snel begon dat wel bekende en irritante knagende gevoel weer op te spelen dat wetenschappers zo eigen is. Want het Higgs-mechanisme verklaart dan wel hoe deeltjes massa krijgen, maar waarom de massa’s zijn wat ze zijn en zo volledig verschillend is een compleet raadsel. Na zo lang geobsedeerd te zijn geweest door de jacht op het Higgs-boson zouden we bijna vergeten dat het lijstje van onbeantwoorde vragen en mysteries in de natuur nog zo veel langer was dan het wel/niet bestaan van het Higgs-boson. How half of the normal matter in the universe is finally confirmed to exist, not that most of us knew it wasn't. Also, why the next big collider should be muon-muon, and a spider that hangs out around underwater methane seeps.The universe is thought to consist of 70% Dark Energy, 25% Dark Matter, and just 5% Baryonic matter which is the atoms that make up you and me. At least, that's what the models suggest. But a well-kept secret between astronomers and cosmologists for all these years has been that they haven't actually ever seen almost half of that 5% normal matter because it is thinly dispersed as gas between the galaxies and galactic clusters. This week, two studies have been published putting that right.Satisfactory model-match #1: Liam Connor of Harvard University with colleagues from Caltech have been using a mysterious phenomenon called Fast Radio Bursts (FBRs) to infer what the intergalactic medium is in between, and how much of it there is. Satisfactory model-match #2: Konstanios Migkas of Leiden University and colleagues have been looking at the very faint x-ray signal from the intergalactic medium, removing the incidental x-ray sources such as black holes, and have managed to identify some structure - in this case a mind-bendingly huge filament of ionised gas stretching between two galactic superclusters - confirming the state of “Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium” (WHIM) as predicted for much of the universe.Of course, there is not just the cosmological standard model (lambdaCDM) that these satisfy in science today. There is also the remarkably resilient Standard Model of particle physics. A report this week from the US National Academies recommends the US begins building the world's next particle collider to follow the work of the LHC (and FCC) at Cern. It should, as University of Tennessee at Knoxville's Tova Holmes tells us, collide not ordinary, stable, easy to manipulate particles like protons and electrons, but muons. Finally, Shana Goffredi of Occidental College in California, has found a VERY odd spider. Diving to depths in the submersible Alvin, they have found that a species of small sea-spiders, Sericosura, actually farm bacteria on their exoskeleton. Why? Because they hang around methane seeps on the ocean floor, where a specialist bacteria can metabolize methane – something the spiders themselves can't do.
