In Canada and many other parts of the world, we've relied on policymakers and scientists to be the ones communicating around climate, and they failed because they've only appealed to people's heads and haven't appealed to their hearts and souls. I think the big conversation coming out of COP 28 - and that you but I'm sure people at SCALE and others, we've known this for a long time, but it's kind of being recognized now - is that we need culture at the table. We need art and artists. We need to be connecting to all parts of people and not just showing numbers because that hasn't worked, and it's not working. And so I actually feel hopeful that art and culture being at the table will help with that whole overhaul and systems level transformation.Note: I'm using Whisper Transcribe, an artificial intelligence podcasting tool, for the first time with this episode. It helped me generate quotes, create chapters (see below), generate transcriptions (see Transcripts section), produce social media postings (notice the new tone and hashtags) and write up the episode notes (notice more fluid language), however I'm a little skeptical about AI's ability to get it all right (verification required) but it's pretty good and saves me time and delivers a better product. However I will continue to write and record my very human introduction at the top of each episode like this… Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time. I had just completed my conversation with Tanya Kalmanovitch (see e189 tanya kalmanovitch - mobilizing the power of the arts) at No. 9 gardens near Kingston, Ontario (see e68  for more on no. 9 gardens) when I sat down at a picnic table with a group of arts and climate activists at a meeting of the Centre for Sustainable Practices the Art (CSPA) and right in front of me was Kim Fry. The same Kim Fry who co-founded and runs Music Declares Emergency Canada and is a hero of mine. I know Kim by reputation, but we had not yet met in person, so, on the spot, I asked Kim to record a conscient conversation with me about her life's work in music and environmental awareness. Kim now lives by the Atlantic ocean which is in Kjipuktuk, Mi'kma'ki territory, also known as Halifax, Nova Scotia. Before her recent move Eastward, she lived in Tkaronto for 27 years where she was an elementary school teacher, union activist, climate justice activist, environmental campaigner, storyteller and music manager. With the family move to K'jipuktuk, Kim decided to return to the world of environmental activism and music where she organized, among other things, the first ever Canadian Music Climate Summit. You'll hear that Kim talk about the power of music in the climate emergency :We need systems change, and so we need the whole way that the music industry operates to really rethink itself and sometimes some people might say that's greenwashing, because we're still talking about these big, huge multinational corporations when it comes to the music industry but I think there are folks who navigate that space and do it incredibly well. You'll also hear about Kim's efforts to highlight the importance of creating safe spaces for emotional engagement through music and community such as the sustainability committee at the Juno Awards, which is dedicated to reducing the industry's environmental footprint by promoting eco-friendly practices like public transit and plant-based catering.A particularly inspiring anecdote for me was about Kim's daughter Brighid Fry known under her artist name Housewife former Moscow Apartment) Bridghid ensured that a climate clause was included in her record deal. This type of action exemplifies the shift from incremental changes to systemic reform, advocating for the integration of culture and art into climate conversations and the shift from appealing from one's heads to one's hearts and souls.Oh, and when she has free time, Kim is working on a novel about the climate emergency. I look forward to that and I think you'll enjoy our unscheduled but long overdue conversation. Kim recommended the following publications and events:Birchbark House series by Louise ErdrichHadestown by Anais Mitchell : a musical about climate changeNeil Young's Love Earth tourNote: I have inserted 5 seconds of silence here and there during our conversation as interludes.*Episode Chapters (AI generated)IntroductionIn this section, Kim Fry introduces herself and shares her background as a climate activist, highlighting her journey from organizing student walkouts in the early '90s to her current work in music and climate activism. The Role of Music in Climate ActivismKim discusses the significant role that music and the arts play in climate activism, emphasizing how they can unite people and inspire political change through emotional connection.Launching Music Declares EmergencyThe conversation shifts to the founding of the Canadian chapter of Music Declares Emergency, detailing the collaborative efforts that led to its creation and the impact of the climate strikes in 2019.Challenges for Musicians in the Climate CrisisKim addresses the reluctance of musicians to engage in climate discussions due to the carbon-intensive nature of touring, and the need for systemic change within the music industry.Navigating Grief and Hope Through MusicThis chapter explores how music can help individuals process grief and despair related to the climate crisis, while also fostering a sense of hope and community. The Power of Collective SingingKim shares her personal experiences with singing and its transformative power, highlighting how collective music-making can ground individuals and strengthen community bonds.Engaging the Next GenerationThe discussion turns to the political engagement of Gen Z and the need for hopeful narratives that inspire action rather than despair, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in climate discourse.Creating Space for Connection and GratitudeKim emphasizes the importance of cultivating gratitude and deep connections to nature as foundational elements for addressing climate challenges and fostering resilience.Innovative Initiatives at the JunosThe conversation highlights the successful sustainability initiatives implemented at the Junos, showcasing how the music industry can take concrete steps towards climate action. The Need for Systemic ChangeKim discusses the necessity of systemic change in addressing the climate crisis, advocating for a collaborative approach that integrates art and culture into climate solutions.Youth Empowerment and Climate ActionThe chapter concludes with a reflection on the empowerment of youth in climate activism, showcasing how the next generation is driving important conversations around sustainability and systemic change. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Big Red Machine has been a rejection of the music industry's expectations weighing upon Dessner and Vernon, but also a place of solace for the pair amongst their sometimes painful struggles with mental health. The pair take turns grounding each other through their successes and supporting during their lows, while writing songs like “Brycie” and “Hutch” that pay tribute to close-knit family and friends. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Ani DiFranco began recording and self-releasing her music as a 20 year old in Buffalo, New York in 1990. 34 years later she is widely considered to be a feminist icon. But in many ways she emerged iconic, fully formed and fearless.  A facile lyricist with a biting honesty, she played guitar with a virtuosic, rhythmic style. And she was ahead of her time as an independent artist who owned all her own masters and controlled most of the major aspects of her career. She's sometimes called the mother of the DIY movement. DiFranco has released all of her albums (over twenty) on her Righteous Babe record label.  The label has also put out projects for other distinguished singer songwriters including Andrew Bird, Utah Phillips, Arto Lindsay, and Anaïs Mitchell whose own Hadestown project was first released as an album on Righteous Babe before being transformed into the Broadway hit that it is today. Ani Difranco's most recent studio album Revolutionary Love came out in 2021. In 2022 she published a picture book for children called The Knowing which she described as “an Ani DiFranco-style lullaby, inviting young readers to ponder the distinction between outer forms of identity and the inner light of consciousness.” And she will join the cast of Hadestown on Broadway in February, playing the role of Persephone, a part she sang on Anais Mitchell's original Righteous Babe recording in 2010. So it's both her broadway debut and a fill circle moment.  In recent years Righteous Babe has released anniversary editions of Ani's early recordings. In 2022 she revisited the 1998 album Little Plastic Castle, sharing anecdotes and memories of the making of it on social media, and playing some of the songs live. Her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, was published in 2019. Here she talks about how she sees her work today (“my job is connecting with people”), her early career (“it was relentless”), avoiding being labeled or boxed in (“I feel like a survivor of labels”), her idea of success (“successful artists are not necessarily the best selling”), raising children in an era of performative identity, practicing revolutionary love and why it's easier to tell the truth than to hide yourself. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios 0:00 Intro 12:00 Interview

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Bassist and composer Todd Sickafoose shows up in a lot of places: on stage with singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco or drummer Allison Miller, behind the scenes as a record producer for artists like Noe Venable and Anais Mitchell, orchestrating the music for the Broadway musical Hadestown (which earned him both a Grammy for record production and a Tony for orchestration), and as a bandleader.  His new record Bear Proof is his first album of original music in nearly 15 years. He describes it as “62 minutes of music for eight musicians.” The sound is evocative, melodically rich, rhythmically intense, and features a unique instrumentation of violin, accordion, electric guitar, acoustic piano, clarinet, cornet, bass and drums.  Here he talks about his multifaceted career, Hadestown and the process of putting together a Broadway show, working with Ani DiFranco, Bear Proof, releasing music in today's world, why bass players make good producers, and how a skin cancer diagnosis influenced his life personally and professionally. www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

Johnson, Anais Mitchell, and Josh Kaufman to the Bonny Light Horseman line up.  We also discuss the major differences between Bonny Light Horseman's  Rolling Golden Honey and their 2020 self-titled, Grammy Award Nominated album, and how this new release really makes the trio an actual "band" versus a side project.  We talk about Train's AM Gold and how strange this release has been from its Billboard numbers to its absence at Triple A radio, even though the band has a long history at the format.  We talk about the fact that Pat Monohan is a really strong frontman, but is also the only original member of the band still in Train.  We dive into traditional soul artist Lee Fields new solo album, Sentimental Fool.  We discuss the fact that this is his first album without the Expressions in twenty years.  We also talk about producer Gabriel Roth, and how he co-owns Dap-tone Records and performed and produced Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for twenty years.   We cover ZZ Top's1983 release, Eliminator, and how it moved the band from blues based boogie rock to a more mainstream, synth driven, new wave rock.  We also discuss the important branding decisions made with Billy Gibbons and Bill Ham to include Gibbon's 1933 Ford Coupe in all the album's marketing and several music videos.    We also briefly discuss Taylors Swift's new Billboard record shattering new album, Midnights, and how well the album and her lead single, "Anti-hero" has done.     Here are the albums included in this episode of the Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast: Singer Songwriter October Record of the Month:  Bonny Light Horseman | Rolling Golden Honey (Ltd. Lauren Minear is a Nashville-raised singer-songwriter set to release her debut album, Invisible Woman, out October 14. She is steeped in the vulnerability of Nashville soul, the real deal; tender and passionate, yet raw and brutally honest songwriting in the lineage of Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch. Like these women, Lauren wears her heart on her sleeve as she explores the corners of love through a fragile lens of self-awareness, evoking the likes of Anais Mitchell, Taylor Swift, and Natalie Merchant.Born in Manhattan, Lauren's family moved to Nashville, where she grew up, spending her formative years sharing her parents' love of Brooks & Dunn, KD Lang, Garth Brooks, and Patsy Cline. She also immersed herself in the sounds from the country music radio stations they tuned into on their regular drives from the city to New Orleans to visit her grandparents and the southern soul there, radiating out of The Big Easy.Memorizing songs by Faith Hill, Amy Grant, Mariah Carey, and Shania Twain, and with Nashville songwriting seemingly steeped in her blood, Lauren Minear wrote her first song, "Daddy's Little Girl," at 14 years old, and soon found herself interning on Music Row at Major Bob Music, at Sony ATV Publishing and in the studio with Steve Earle as well as performing and recording an EP with guitarist George Marinelli (Bonnie Raitt). Now a Mother of two little boys and again living in New York with Madi Diaz, Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, and YEBBA on her stereo, Lauren's journey has been far from just musical; her life has given her a rich and varied tapestry of experiences from which to draw as a songwriter. A transformative journey that has given her confidence and power, Lauren's artistry and songwriting skills were rekindled when she became a mother. This process changed her perception of the world and herself and brought her back to music and the spiritual therapy of creativity.

Johnson and Josh Kaufman) and is the mom of two young kids, so very busy!! It took a global pandemic to stop everything and allow her to concentrate on her own inner world. All of the songs on Anaïs Mitchell are truly biographical, which is not the norm for the Vermont songwriter. She was actually 9 months pregnant when the pandemic hit, and thanks to a tip from a Seattle friend, she packed up her family and left the city for her home state. She ended up spending lockdown in her grandparents house on her family's Vermont compound. There, she unearthed some embarrassing teenage journals (which she promptly burned) and had the opportunity to reconnect with her younger self. Those perspectives and more were sown into this incredible new album. Let's get into it!!It was truly a gift to be able to dive deep with Anaïs and producer Josh Kaufman (who briefly joined us for this episode!). Hope you get into this album as deeply as I did. I look forward to many more inspired works of art from Anaïs! She is a treasure and I'm so glad she's in our world. After you get into this episode, you can go way back to Basic Folk Episode 8 and listen to Anaïs' first appearance on the pod. One of my favorite interviews ever!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Artists are always searching for the ideal creative state, that perfect time when the songs effortlessly flow. With both Anaïs Mitchell and Charlotte Cornfield, that involves, well, not really being aware of when they're in that ideal state. For Mitchell, it involves accessing the subconscious in dreams. If she's lucky, a fellow songwriter might appear in those dreams to give her counsel, like David Rawlings once did. And for Cornfield, that brief moment right before sleep, when she's just about to doze off, is an especially fertile time. Mitchell and Cornfield love a good deadline. Their songwriting processes involve structure and discipline, not just sleeping and dreaming. “I'm a big fan of having a routine and showing up for it, even if nothing happens,” Mitchell told me. And they also find artistic inspiration in blank email messages (Mitchell), skateboards (Cornfield), door panels (Mitchell), and black ink (both). In fact, Mitchell is so versed in door panels that she actually told Cornfield and me what kind of door panels we have after noticing them in our interview. In case you were wondering how I picked Mitchell and Cornfield as an interview pair, here's my highly scientific process. I follow two artists on Twitter, then from that  I see if they follow each other. If they do, then it's match. Turns out that Mitchell and Cornfield have known each other for over ten years, so their familiarity made this a very fun conversation. Enjoy!
