This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Some people call it one of the most haunted towns in America: Rugby, Tennessee, nestled in the quiet corners of Northeast Tennessee. Founded in 1880 by the renowned author Thomas Hughes, Rugby was envisioned as a Utopian village, a beacon of harmonious living. However, Hughes' dreams were dashed, and tragedy struck when typhoid fever claimed the lives of many early inhabitants. Today, Rugby stands frozen in time, its Victorian charm preserved amidst the rolling hills and whispers of the past. Its population is just 75, perhaps more if you count the spirits that allegedly linger among its quaint streets. For those intrigued by the paranormal, Rugby offers an irresistible invitation. Here, the veil between the worlds is said to be thin, with hauntings reported in almost every building in this tiny town where the past is alive, and the spirits roam freely. Today on The Grave Talks, we explore the ghosts of the Historic Rugby Village with Miranda Young. This is Part Two of our conversation. Thomas Hughes, Chief Executive of the Appeals Centre Europe says the newly-formed body has already received more than 1,5000 disputes.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 29, 2024 is: linchpin LINCH-pin noun Linchpin, sometimes spelled lynchpin, literally refers to a locking pin inserted crosswise, as at the end of an axle or shaft. In figurative use, linchpin refers to a person or thing that serves to hold together parts or elements that exist or function as a unit; such a linchpin is often understood as the most important part of a complex situation or system. // Investors are betting that the new product line will be the linchpin that secures the company's place in the very competitive market in the years and decades to come. See the entry > Examples: “When people tell the story of my life, when I tell this story of my life, Trisha doesn't get much space, but she is a linchpin. For me the linchpin is that tiny bit of aid that holds things together when they might otherwise fall apart that keeps you rolling down the road to where you were already going. It's not the engine, it's not the track. It's invisible but in the moment essential help.” — Alice Randall, My Black Country: A Journey Through Country Music's Black Past, Present, and Future, 2024 Did you know? In his 1857 novel, Tom Brown's School Days, Thomas Hughes describes the “cowardly” custom of “taking the linch-pins out of the farmers' and bagmens' gigs at the fairs.” The linchpin in question held the wheel on the carriage, and removing it made it likely that the wheel would come off as the vehicle moved. Such a pin was called a lynis in Old English; Middle English speakers added pin to form lynspin. By the early 20th century, English speakers were using linchpin for anything as critical to a complex situation as a linchpin is to a wagon, as when Winston Churchill, in 1930, wrote of Canada and the role it played in the relationship between Great Britain and the United States, that “no state, no country, no band of men can more truly be described as the linchpin of peace and world progress.”
A "game-changing moment" is how the boss of the new settlement body between the big online platforms and their users was described. The new out-of-court agency hopes to be the place to arbitrate on decisions to take down or leave up content users believe is hate speech, incitement to violence or other categories deemed unacceptable. The Appeals Centre Europe, which was set up as part of the EU's new DSA legislation, will be based in Ireland and joinng Joe on the show was its Chief Executive is Thomas Hughes.

The wonders of modern technology mean many men now spend most of their working lives sat at desks or screens, exerting very little physical energy. We now pay money to do the kind of labour for which our forebears were themselves paid. What are the hidden costs of this today? Have we become less active, less fulfilled, and less purposeful in the world as a result? The "Muscular Christianity" movement in the 19th century saw these problems well in advance. At a time where Christianity, for many men, was becoming overly intellectual and impractical, the Muscular Christians exhorted men to rediscover the positive use of their bodies as a spiritual and theological imperative. Although this led some towards a more "social gospel", the movement grasped key aspects of the Christian faith which have again been neglected today, such as the cultivation of character through brotherhood and sport, the significance of distinctly male and female bodies, and the need for virtuous men who can use their strength to protect (rather than abuse) those weaker than men. What might a revival of a more "muscular" Christianity look like in our own time? ** Please help Pod of the Gaps by ... - Liking us and/or leaving a review on your podcast provider - Sharing an episode with a friend (or two or three) - Supporting us (https://www.patreon.com/wkop) RESOURCES: - https://twitter.com/MrT — for our cover image this episode - Greg Morse, 'The Search for Manly Men of God: A History of Muscular Christianity' (2022) https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-search-for-manly-men-of-god - Thomas Hughes, Tom Brown's Schooldays (1857) - W. Dr. Andriette reminds us that if we are really committed to practicing the Presence of God, we need to bring about a fundamental SHIFT in our values. We must learn to think in terms of what good is possible as opposed to what problems exist. That's the key to changing "how we be" - and it is also the place where Love is revealed.
