Twelve Songs of Christmas

The world met Julian Koster as part of the Elephant 6 Collective in the 1990s, when he played a variety of instruments with Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, and his own projects, The Music Tapes and The Orbiting Human Circus. In 2008, he released The Singing Saw at Christmastime, and part of the conceit is that the saws actually do the singing. He's not playing the saws; he's encouraging them to sing. That element of whimsy is part of the fun of Koster's projects and our conversation, though he brought engineer Nesey Gallons on the call with him to be a lifeline when Koster starts to drift too far out.  Our conversation covers some ground, from an unexpected appearance by Leadbelly to a Christmas interlude courtesy of Japanese filmmaker Akira  Kurosawa. Koster and Gallons also turned me on to a Folksways compilation of Ukrainian Christmas songs. The song we hear is "The Miracle of the Birth."

Original broadcast date October 5, 2017. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2017/10/binary-system-podcast-98-horror-movies-with-special-guest-hannah/ The nights are longer, the air is cooler, there's pumpkin spice everywhere, so you know what that means? Time to break out our favorite horror movies and scare ourselves silly. (Hey, could you leave the light on in the hallway tonight? Why? Um, no reason...) Special guest Hannah Wallace joins Binary System as we put flashlights under our faces and discuss our favorite horror movies: it was supposed to be one apiece, but that plan went out the window fast as we touched on (*deep breath*) In the Mouth of Madness, Blair Witch Project, The Ring, Event Horizon, Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Warriors, What Lies Beneath, and The Descent. We also talked about a few of the gorier films (Saw, Drag Me to Hell, Silent Night Deadly Night) and why the hell we watched them, and then we finished up with moments from Snap Judgement "Spooked," The Orbiting Human Circus of the Air (well, the one bit that we actually liked, starts right at 17 minutes), two sentence horror stories, Texts From a Jack O'Lantern, The Black Pumpkin, and a cartoon Hannah remembers that had gargoyles in it. No, not that one, a different one. http://snapjudgment.org/All-Spooked-Episodes http://dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/traffic.libsyn.com/force-cdn/highwinds/orbitinghumancircus/The_Orbiting_Human_Circus_Season_One_Episode_1.mp3 https://thoughtcatalog.com/michael-koh/2013/07/40-freaking-creepy-ass-two-sentence-stories/ http://the-toast.net/2013/10/30/text-messages-jack-o-lantern/ http://ihorror.com/5-scary-stories-read-dark/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Halloween_Tree_(film) Outro song this week is 90 seconds of John Carpenter and Jim Lang's theme for In the Mouth of Madness. Correction the first: more of a clarification really, the “jump into a pool of hypodermic needles” scene was from Saw II. Which we haven't watched. Partly because of the “jump into a pool of hypodermic needles” scene.

The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2016/11/binary-system-podcast-57-the-orbiting-human-circus-of-the-air-1/ Yes, we're a little behind schedule; the second episode of "The Orbiting Human Circus (Of the Air) has already dropped, and we've only just now gotten around to watching the first one. So how was it? It's...interesting. There are things we liked about it, and things we definitely didn't. After a quick recap, we talked a little bit about the current Transformers: Revolution storyline (which we did not like, and we're definitely not happy about it.) To round it out we talked about Sense8, Hannibal, The Descent, and Skottie Young's delightfully disturbing I Hate Fairyland.

The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2016/11/binary-system-podcast-58-wtnv-episode-97-josefina/ This week we listen in as Old Woman Josie tells us a little more about herself, her life with, ahem, "angels," her love of music (even when it was illegal) and her daughter from the strange land of Ocklahwhama. After that we talked a little about The Walking Dead, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air.) Some of those things we're not...we don't exactly...okay look, sometimes we like to talk about things we hate. Or things we used to like but now hate. Or things that everyone else seems to like but we...well you get it. We're going to have to have an episode soon where we get all that out of our system. As RuPaul’s Drag Race UK returns for a second season and the US series welcomes its first trans man as a competitor, are the ironically gendered boundaries of drag breaking down and what about the other side of drag - the kings? Drag kings Don One and Jodie Mitchell, better known as John Travulva, join Samira to talk about the world of Kings. Courttia Newland’s new novel A River Called Time has been 18 years in the making and imagines a city a little like London in a world in which colonialism and slavery never happened. The writer discusses imagination, speculative fiction and class – and his co-scripting with Steve McQueen for two of the Small Axe films - Lovers Rock and Red, White and Blue. You’re back in lockdown, it’s bitterly cold outside and the nights are long and dark. You could order a sad lamp online and hope for the best, or you can lean into it with writer Eleanor Penny’s round up of podcasts for this bleak midwinter. Creepy, desolate, bleak - but gripping and thrilling too. Recommendations include The Sink, The Orbiting Human Circus, and Victoriocity. Low Profile with Markly Morrison

Welcome to the 32nd episode of Low Profile with Markly Morrison, the show that stands at least six feet away from popular music. My guest today, Julian Koster, is a master of the singing saw, a prominent member of cult heroes Neutral Milk Hotel, and the founder of his own group The Music Tapes, both part of the storied Elephant Six Collective in Athens Georgia. He is also the creator of a lavish scripted podcast from WNYC called “The Orbiting Human Circus,” which is in production on its third season. His music is created using an eclectic variety of antiquated recording equipment and unconventional instruments. Julian spoke with me earlier in the fall of 2020 about his involvement in experimental pop, his homespun approach to production, and the perks of having a global audience for the Music Tapes as the backbone of The Orbiting Human Circus. If you want to learn more about The Music Tapes you can find some links on the episode’s website at lowprofilepodcast.com. Thanks to Julian for doing the interview, thanks to Christy Gressman at WNYC for helping me with some background, and thanks so much to you for listening, subscribing and recommending Low Profile to your friends. This is Markly Morrison, wishing you well. Catch you again in a couple of weeks!

It Makes A Sound

Deirdre Gardner finds a lost cassette tape from 1992 in the attic of a townhouse in an abandoned golf-course community and embarks on a mission to remind us all of the forgotten musical genius, Wim Faros. It Makes A Sound follows Deirdre’s nostalgic journey into Wim’s legacy: a quest to restore what is missing and to revive the sound of a generation. Created by Jacquelyn Landgraf (actor, writer, director, and downtown theater curio; a longtime member of the New York Neo-Futurists), with original music by Nate Weida. Co-directed by Anya Saffir. Sound design and engineering by Vincent Cacchione. Featuring the voices of Jacquelyn Landgraf, Annie Golden (Orange is the New Black, Hair), Nate Weida, Melissa Mahoney, Siobhan Fallon (Saturday Night Live, Wayward Pines), and other special guests. Produced by Night Vale Presents, the network that brought you Welcome to Night Vale, Alice Isn’t Dead, Within the Wires, The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air), Conversations with People Who Hate Me, and I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats. Season One premieres on September 24, 2017. More info: www.nightvalepresents.com

I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats

A collaboration between Night Vale Presents, the Mountain Goats, and Merge Records, I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats is a podcast about what it means to be an artist, what it means to be a fan, and what it means to be, as many people are, both at once. The show finds Joseph Fink, creator of Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn’t Dead, in conversation with one of his artistic heroes, John Darnielle, singer and songwriter of the Mountain Goats. Season One explores the stories behind the Mountain Goats’ album All Hail West Texas, one song at a time. In each episode, John, Joseph, and special guests discuss songwriting, storytelling, current events, and the art and artists that inspire them. Each episode will also premiere a brand new cover version of the song discussed that week, recorded just for the podcast by artists like Amanda Palmer, Andrew Bird, and Dessa. Season One of I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats premieres September 28, 2017. Produced by Christy Gressman. From Night Vale Presents, the network that brought you Welcome to Night Vale, Alice Isn’t Dead, Within the Wires, The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air), and Conversations with People Who Hate Me. Happy holidays everyone. Featuring "Microcosms of Music" by me, Patrick Simpson, produced in May 2016. Music was Erik Satie's "Je te veux." Podcast recommendations: Radiolab (radiolab.org) This American Life (thisamericanlife.org) Welcome to Night Vale (welcometonightvale.com) Song Exploder (songexploder.net) Criminal (thisiscriminal.com) Love + Radio (loveandradio.org) 99% Invisible (99percentinvisible.org) Planet Money (npr.org/podcasts/510289/planet-money) Revisionist History (revisionisthistory.com) HowSound (transom.org/topics/howsound) Other podcasts I didn't mention but still love: Serial. Duh. Radiotopia has so many more great podcasts beyond the ones I mentioned. To name a few more: The Heart, the memory palace, Radio Diaries, Strangers, The Allusionist, The Truth, and The Bugle. NPR also has several more podcasts I enjoy other than Planet Money—specifically Embedded (which hasn't been updated in a while, I'm waiting!), Code Switch, and of course, the NPR Politics Podcast. Lauren Ober on The Big Listen deserves a shout-out for introducing me to so many great podcasts beyond the small circle of networks I usually listen to—my two favorites right now are Serendipity and Flash Forward. Alice Isn't Dead, Within the Wires, and The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air) are all surreal serialized audio fiction podcasts produced under the Night Vale umbrella. I love them all. Radiolab produced a podcast about the Supreme Court last summer called More Perfect, which was amazing. Those guys are radio gods. There are several podcasts about sound that I love: The World According to Sound, Sound Matters, Twenty Thousand Hertz, and Reasonably Sound. They're vastly different in style, but they all share the unique ability to change how you listen to the world. On the Media is one of the best news commentary podcasts out there. Bob and Brooke have been doing this for decades, and it shows. Reveal is doing some of the most important work in radio, and I'm proud to support them. The stories are so well researched and reported, and every one of them will move you and change how you look at the world. And finally, the Gimlet podcasts are the new kids on the block, and they're knocking it out of the park. I love Reply All, and lately I've also been enjoying some of the newer ones like Science Vs and Undone. Thanks for a great first season everyone. Melomania will return in the new year.
