One of my favorite episodes of the year - the week before Memorial Day Weekend. This episode features a really good conversation with Julie Rockcastle, Jen Raines, Payge Olson, Isa Cardenas and Steve Rockcastle about the upcoming Great Blue Heron Music Festival on July 4th, 5th and 6th at the Heron and all the different activities, features and music that will be there that weekend; volunteering opportunities so you can be part of the inner workings of the festival and get a free festival pass; this upcoming Nature and Wellness weekend at the Heron and all the free (yes, free!) activities and workshops this weekend, and the Heron's annual May Day celebration on Sunday that really kicks the summer off! Plus music and cuts from Jim Donovan & The Sun King Warriors, Driftwood, Cool Cool Cool, Jimkata, Ryan Montbleau, The Rumble feat. Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr., Sneezy, Max Childs, New Planets, Julia., Florencia & The Feeling, Beats Antique, Andy Frasco & The UN, Shadowgrass and The Gunpoets. Jimkata are a three-piece anthemic, synth-washed, electro-rock band based out of Ithaca and Los Angeles. With a triumph of swirling analog synths, infectious pop hooks and candid lyrics, Jimkata have built a distinct sound which has been resonating with listeners across the country. Friends since middle school, Evan Friedell, Aaron Gorsch and Packy Lunn infuse Jimkata, (named after the so-bad-it's-good 1985 gym-fu caper Gymkata) with both an adventurous musical streak and relatable lyrical themes MAY 4TH Winchester Lakewood OH TICKETS https://www.ticketweb.com/event/jimkata-c-level-abstract-sounds-the-winchester-tickets/13055915 Jimkata's Info https://jimkata.com/?fbclid=IwAR2AB9ZcTXLMfWKiYbOslX_s8cltwPf-XSN9y8Qt90fRY4BiHkw9feoE7O4 jimkatamusic
As we roll into 2023 this weekend, we've heard about lots of fun events for New Year's Eve, and some of them start a night early with both Friday and Saturday night gigs. All the events we've learned about are in the 14850 Happenings events calendar. Driftwood has a pair of concerts this weekend at the Range in Downtown Ithaca, two 8pm shows on Friday night and Saturday night. Friday's show will start with special guest Joe Crookston, and on New Year's Eve, Dom Maytr is opening. The Comb Down and Jimkata are hosting a two-night New Year's Eve shindig at Deep Dive on the waterfront. Tickets are available for Friday night or Saturday night or both. Bar Argos and the Argos Warehouse have a New Year's Eve gala in both spaces plus their outdoor patios and fire pits, featuring live music from the Real Live Sextet at the Warehouse and MAQ at Bar Argos, plus Proper Philth spinning until 2am. K-HOUSE Karaoke Lounge at Lansing Village Place suggests leaving the high heels at home and dressing comfy for their Karaoke Pajama Party. No cover in the bar and lounge area, and regular rates for their private karaoke suites. Garrett's Brewing in Trumansburg has a Rockin' New Year's Eve Party featuring live music from Bad Alibi, with beer specials and a champagne toast at midnight. There are several restaurants open for dinner on New Year's Eve, some (like Hazelnut Kitchen) with a celebratory tasting menu, and we've heard from a few (including the Antlers, Hazelnut, and Lucky Hare Brewing) with New Year's Day brunch plans. Find all the holiday hours at 14850.com. One of our favorite New Year's Day traditions is the free espresso shot at Gimme! Coffee's cafés! Don't forget to tip your barista well. If we're missing any New Year's Eve events, let us know at magazine@14850.com! However you choose to celebrate, please find a safe ride home at the end of the night. In this exclusive interview, Taraleigh and Leah had the pleasure of chatting with Evan Friedell and Packy Lunn from Jimkata about their return from hiatus, their new album Bonfires, and their upcoming West Coast tour. The two share how taking a pause from the band allowed them to see how impactful Jimkata has been. They share what it's been like to play their new songs live and how much they are looking forward to getting back on the road touring. We dive into the holistic nature of music, how they are approaching it differently this time, and the importance of safety and trust in experiencing those transcendent live music moments. For the “Did you Know,” Leah shares why safety and trust are so important for experiencing “it” and Taraleigh offers a way to learn more in the “Daily Jam.”New York-bred, LA-based synth-rock band Jimkata has been pairing playful, buoyant melodies with weighty, emotive lyrics since its members - three lifelong friends - formed the project in 2005. The group notched nationwide festival performances and released a series of critically-acclaimed studio albums before taking a hiatus in 2017. Their new album Bonfires is a bracingly original collection of dance floor-ready records that simultaneously feel modern yet classic, blurring the lines between the organic and the electronic as they reckon with doubt, struggle, and perseverance in a search for truth and meaning. The 10-track album boasting 500,000+ combined streams across platforms. Each Bonfires track released alongside its own captivating music video (with the title track's music video garnering 100,000+ views), further depicting Jimkata's newfound sense of freedom and unrestrained creativity. A-side/B-side is a biweekly album review podcast hosted by Sam Ives and Laura Koch, covering one album for each "side" of the cast. The A-side segment explores in-depth a well-known, mainstream album, while the B-side brings discussion on an album you may not have ever heard before. On this week's episode, the A-side finds Laura sharing opinions on Cage the Elephant's "Tell Me I'm Pretty" and Sam brings up Jimkata's "In Motion" for the B-side. While both albums come from the modern rock genre, they tell wildly different stories with clear sonic differences.
