This week on the show, the great Yuka Honda. She's a New York musician. In the 1990s, she emerged from the fertile New York music underground with Cibo Matto alongside groups like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and Luscious Jackson. She's collaborated with an extensive roster of musicians, including John Zorn,David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon, and her husband, guitarist Nels Cline. Earlier this year, we taped the conversation you're about to hear. Some of it ran as text in the Across the Horizon zine that was available at Big Ears Music Fest. What is Across the Horizon? Well, it's a collaborative series from Bob Holmes of Suss and Northern Spy Records gathering together like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations on August 13th. Under her Eucademix banner, Yuka has explored experimental electronics via two semi recent Farm Psychedelia EPs and her Across The Horizon contribution “A Long Slow Blink Before The Answer.” In this conversation, we get into food, art, language, and much more. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. New or new-ish releases from Jeff Parker, Tim Berne, Julian Lage and John Zorn's New Masada Quartet feature in Def Jim's latest Jazz Show. Mr. Parker is back with another set from the band that recorded Mondays At The Enfield Tennis Academy a while back, this time on a better-distributed label (and available from Real Groovy on vinyl at last check). Otherwise the Show is graced with the usual miscellany of carefully-chosen album tracks new and old from the modern jazz canon. Don't miss it!

"House Of Steam" Putting it simply the L.A.-born Nels Cline's resume' is so deep, to quote Mark Eitzel, it "would make the ocean proud." The guitarist and composer is one of the most respected names in the business and though he's perhaps best known these days for being the guitarist of Wilco, let's not single story Mr. Cline, because his body of work is varied and extensive. Aside from his early jazz work with his twin brother Alex, he's played with everyone from the Geraldine Fibbers to Mike Watt to Thurston Moore. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. Cline has played on close to 200 albums in jazz, pop, rock, country, and experimental music. Let me give you a few of those 200 to play with: Yoko Ono, Henry Kaiser, Firehose, Wayne Kramer, Rickie Lee Jones, John Zorn, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Neil Finn, Lee Ranaldo and Chris Stamey. And belive me when I tell you that's a heavily expurgated list. Over the years Cline has been in bands with his pal Mike Watt Floored By Four, band with his wife Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto and he's had the Nels Cline Singers, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline 4. Now comes The Consentrik Quartet, which is Cline along with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chirs Lightcap and drummer Tom Rainey. Improvisational, experimental and downright wonderful, the band's debut album is a profound blend of rich cycle grooves, unexpected rhythmic excursions, and subtle meter innovations. It's marvelous work. Filled with delicate percussive brushes, virtuoso sax fills, prowling bass lines idiosyncratic sax melodies and Cline's nimble guitar lines moving through each composition with dextrous finesse, it's hard to think of a richer listening experience in recent memory. It's hard to think of a nicer guy as well--Nels is a lovely fellow and now you get to meet him. www.nelscline.com (http://www.nelscline.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG & Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Jews have been a major presence in America's jazz, as musicians and as jazz facilitators, and in Kosher Jammers, Gerber tells that story with a rigour worthy of academia but with a feature writer's creative flair. Besides drawing on a plethora of second-hand sources, Kosher Jammers is absolutely packed with first-hand material, from interviews, phone calls and emails with jazz figures, Jewish and otherwise -- including possibly the last ever interview with swing era icon Artie Shaw. Among the many other interviewees are black jazz figures such as saxophonist Buddy Collette and the critic Stanley Crouch, as a key theme running through the book is the relationship between Jews and African Americans in jazz. The impact on jazz of tunes written by Jewish "Great American Songbook" composers such as George Gershwin, Harold Arlen and Johnny Green is also covered, And the book features an extensive study of the Jewish-jazz phenomenon, whereby musicians from Ziggy Ellman in the 1930s to contemporary artists, notably John Zorn, have sought to create jazz that draws on Jewish music influences and themes. Gerber drives home the point that, even had there never been a single Jewish jazz musician, Jews will still have contributed massively to the development of jazz in the United States, as managers, impresarios, venue owners, label founders and writers.

Thirsty Forest Animals [00:25] "Nape" Southeast of Saturn: Michigan Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-629 2020 All of this, yes. When I lived in NYC in the 90s, so many of my friends were from Michigan that it's amazing some stayed around to develop these sounds. Fauna [05:26] "To Ecstasy" Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2: Midwest Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-750 2022 I also knew a lot of folks from Minneapolis, where Fauna hail from. This track is from their 1992 release Everafter. Glen Campbell [09:23] "Southern Nights" Southern Nights Capitol SO-11601 1977 Glen takes an excellent turn with Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" (https://youtu.be/mCscZ2tPFmI?si=0lfs02BFzVpS3aIf) originally recorded in 1975. Glen heard that version and was reminded of his childhood in Arkansas. This single made it to number 1 on the charts, and the album made it as high as 22 on the Billboard 200. You can see Glen playing one of his weirdo Ovation electric 12-strings here on The Midnight Special (https://youtu.be/A8VgyiMAJ9k?si=qdJzW9C6zMMHfQ70). Hawkwind [12:24] "Sonic Attack" Space Ritual United Artists Records UA-LA120-H2 1973 Epically epic space jams with interspersed spoken words as exampled here with "Sonic Attack" written by Michael Moorcock and recited by James Calvert. The sleeve art by Barney Bubbles is a thing of majesty. If space jams are your thing and you've never heard this album, seek it out. Amazingly, this album briefly dented the Billboard 200, making it to number 179. The album jacket is quite a work of art. If you'd like to see the full artwork, join me over on Patreon for video liner notes (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill). Depeche Mode [17:24] "Dreaming of Me" Speak & Spell Sire SRK 3642 1981 What a difference a decade makes (as compared to Hawkwind)? The debut album by the boys from Basildon, and the only one recorded with Vince Clark (before he moved on to Yaz and subsequently Erasure). This album also just cracked the Billboard 200 here in the US, making it to number 192. This single did actually make it into the US Billboard dance charts, going as high as 47. The English Beat [21:01] "Sooner or Later" Special Beat Service I.R.S. Records SP 75069 1982 (1987 reissue) Everyday someone is born who has never heard "Sooner or Later". Perhaps you are one of those people who has never heard "Sooner or Later". If so, enjoy! This guitar sounds (and this video (https://youtu.be/c-7lBq0zuSM?si=18igG60AbOt239Kf)) have been permentantly etched into my musical brain thanks to the early days of MTV. John Zorn [24:36] "Hico Killer - Long Mile to Houston" Spillane Elektra Nonesuch 9-79172-1 1987 Gritty road story from master blues musician Albert Collins, tinged with Zorn & Co's trademark oddballness. Con Funk Shun [29:19] "Juicy" Spirit of Love Mercury SRM-13806 1980 The Bay Area's very own Con Funk Shun. If you've got a funk/soul album with a track called "Juicy" you know you've got to listen to it. Or at least, I do. Written by the band's guitarist and vocalist Michael Vernon Cooper. The Wonderland Singers [34:07] "Bats in the Belfry" Spooky Halloween Wonderland Records LP-293 1974 They just don't make organ music like they used to, and probably for good reason. At least the cover art is cool. Ustalost [35:20] "III" The Spoor of Vipers Gilead Media RELIC82 2017 Some blackened heaviness from this solo project by Will Skarstad of Yellow Eyes. For those of you who appreciate this style of music, seek out A Wandering Path: The Story of Gilead Media (https://youtu.be/gTZ1HcDtW-U?si=_ann3_mOUWXm2pCq) on a streaming service near you. Missing Persons [40:49] "Bad Streets" Spring Session M Capitol Records ST-12228 1982 This album made a strong impression on my when it came out and I still find myself thinking about it. For this episode's selection, I took a look at the track listings and immediately heard this song in my head. The album made it to number 42 on the Hot 100 and generated 4 singles: "Words (https://youtu.be/IasCZL072fQ?si=VO4X1DpThnxhHYup)", "Desitnation Unknown (https://youtu.be/1WDly1Oc_P4?si=5j2wgoC34DdwEtoU)", "Windows (https://youtu.be/v0vdk3YOvMM?si=31AgmgVzkx6cUeou)", and "Walking in L.A. (https://youtu.be/80WyBxo0Hto?si=DjM4k640jKUOTkhV)". Graham Parker and the Rumour [44:30] "Local Girls" Squeezing Out the Sparks Arista AB 4223 1979 Another heavy rotation video (https://youtu.be/taXvBivGcMo?si=wUPJk-7GLYH8XtUu) from the early days of MTV, despite being made in 1979. The album attempts to explore English suburbia. The album cover features some great typography by Gerard Huerta. Amazing Rhythm Aces [49:48] "Third Rate Romance" Stacked Deck ABC Records ABCD-913 1975 Some fun country-inflected rock from these Memphis gents, sounding almost perfectly mid-70s in a good way. The album reached 11 on the country charts and 120 on the Billboard 200. This single also hit 11 on the country charts and 14 on the pop chart. The band even made an appearance on the second season of Austic City Limits (https://youtu.be/pLz6nIvqB2c?si=nFcMK2tAEEfFjI8n). Love Barry "Byrd" Burton's finger pickin on this. Sly and the Family Stone [53:11] "You Can Make It if You Try" Stand! Epic BN 26456 1969 The mighty Sly Stone and family take a funky turn at this song originally recorded by Gene Allison (https://youtu.be/xiPI7d1y2Co?si=bo1XG2515eGJoYnn) and also covered by the Rolling Stones (https://youtu.be/jz4VO_NiY24?si=1OhUnqa0lAa5JEwM). Fans of Primal Scream will also recognize the tail end of the track that precedes this album closer. Jacksons [56:49] "Blame It on the Boogie" Star Fire Ronco R 3200 1980 As seen on TV! 18 original hits by 18 original artists! A compilation of hits, mostly from 1979. In honor of the late Tito Jackson, I had to go with this uptempo Jacksons single from 1978. Wet Willie [01:00:00] "Keep on Smilin'" Star Trackin' '76 Ronco R 1976-2 1976 As seen on TV! 20 original hits by 20 original artists! While 8 year old me would have been extremely excited about the "Theme from S.W.A.T.", I decided to go with Mobile AL's own Wet Willie. I could have also gone with Abba's "Waterloo" but loyal listeners already know how much I love Abba. Music behind the DJ: "Charade" by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra
A household name for many decades amongst those with an interest in challenging, forward-thinking music, Fred Frith initially gained an audience through his work as the guitarist with 60's group Henry Cow, and has since had a prolific career as a player on many recordings under his own name as well as collaborations with players ranging from Henry Kaiser, to The Residents, to Richard Thompson, to John Zorn. Everyone knows that describing John Zorn as a prolific composer is an understatement. Everyone also knows how inclusive he has been, sharing his compositions with the many musicians who are in his circle of trust. Countless renditions of his music have been recorded by these musicians for Zorn's label, Tzadik. To mark his birthday, on September 2nd, here we will focus on interpretations of the John Zorn songbook, mostly Masada Book One, which have been a bit more independent and have come out on albums not on Tzadik. The playlist features Wayne Horvitz; Rope; Annette Maye; Admah Hotel; Gabriele Coen; Roberto Gatto; Xavier Dubois; Surnatural Orchestra; and the Silkroad Ensemble. After seeing Grammy-winning pianist and composer Kris Davis, live at the Village Vanguard, I knew I wanted to sit down with her and dive into jazz. Here we discuss her philosophy of improvisation and her energy and passion for performing live. The Canadian-born artist fell in love with jazz at an early age, studied jazz piano at the University of Toronto, and cites the legendary Don Pullen as a major influence. Along the way, as she shares, she's played with innovative performers such as J.D. Allen, Dave Holland, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tyshawn Sorey, and John Zorn. Before our conversation winds down, we talk albums and which speak to her the most.

"A Master Class In Songwriting" Jad Fair is probably best known as one half of Half Japanese. Formed with his brother David in 1974, the Maryland by way of Michigan outift remain one of the more curious entires into the pantheon of rock and roll. Their songs are jagged and battered mini-anthems about broken hearts, monsters and...broken hearts and monsters. As Jad Fair once said, their songs are either love songs or monster songs. And there are a lot of songs. For example: the band's sophomore effort was a triple album, some records have 45 songs all under two minutes. Some of the tracks are barely one...Half Japanese have quite a discography, including classics like Music To Strip By, Charmed Life and The Band Who Would Be King. Over the course of their idiosyncratic, non-traditional career, they've counted the Velvet Underground's Moe Tucker as a member, put out albums on Penn Jillette's record label, opened for NIrvana, and collaborated with Daniel Johnston, Kramer, Steve Fisk, Thurston Moore, Fred Frith Teenage Fanclub, Yo La Tengo, The Pastels, Jason Willett and John Zorn, and were chosen by Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Magnum to play the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating. Half Japanese are underground heroes, who broke every rule of modern music and then broke the rules they broke. They remain a dynamic, artistic and powerful creative endeavor. As for Jad Fair, he's done anything but slow down. Aside from putting out a handful of solo albums, as a visual artist Fair's artwork has yielded several books and museum shows across the world. His papercut style is singular and charming, but also rife with a simple complexity. It's really staggering stuff. Also staggering: his new album 100 Songs (A Master Class In Songwriting). It consists of, you guessed it: 100 songs. Impressed? Well, his other new album Film Music has 150. Filled with swerving low-fi bliss, there's not a false note to be found on these records. But of course there isn't: it's Jad Fair. And Jad Fair operates from a cosmos of creative impulse. And that impulse is as pure and driving as it gets. www.jadfair.net (http://www.jadfair.net) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
When Sally Gates moved from New Zealand to Florida, she was already an accomplished guitar player. Playing live in a metal cover band and the grindcore assassins, Relentless Attrition, she honed her chops in the Aukland scene. A year or so later circa 2008, she had moved to Miami and became the touring bass player in the mighty death metal cosmic destroyers known as Gigan. Touring on the band's seminal album "The Order of the False Eye" --a death metal record full of mind bending tempo changes and otherworldly aural assaults--Sally began her sonic journey in the U.S. with a proverbially sonic bang. But there was only one problem, she wasn't a bass player! Now writing and creating with her axe of choice, Sally's Orbweaver project picked up where Gigan left off--launching the listener to the outer orbits of extreme prog death metal. At the same time, Miami's ever expanding noise scene seeped into her restless improvisatory soul. The fearless artist followed her own path. Landing in Brooklyn's ever expanding instrumental improvisation scene, Sally Gates could not be happier. Ben and Jeff were thus so excited to talk to Sally about her new band TITAN TO TACHYONS. An all instrumental experimental jazz-metal group featuring drummer Kenny Grohowski and two bassists: Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk) and Matt Hollenberg (Cleric, John Zorn). The band's second album "Vonals" is as mesmerizing as explosive--a strain of heavy music they simply can not get enough of!!! So cozy up with a Tired Hands Brewery Eviscerated Pathway of Beauty Double Citra IPA and enjoy! Music from this episode comes from the composition "Neutron Wrangler" from the album vonals. Check out some of Sally's incredible guitar playing here: Looping the Seas of Primus Beethoven Piano Tapping And gorgeous paintings here: https://sallygates.myportfolio.com/
Today we are joined by Californian composer, bass guitarist, and double bassist Trevor Dunn. He came to prominence in the 1990s with the experimental band Mr. Bungle and has more than likely appeared on 100+ recording since. I say more than likely because I personally own 13 albums he has played on and I have barely scratched the surface. Here to reveal a little more about the man's music and his love for Brian De Palmer's Carrie. Please welcome the dude himself to A Year In Horror.Trevor Dunn / Mr Bungle / Melvins / John Zorn / Tomahawk / King Buzzo
Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, our weekly series of illuminating interviews and contextual conversations. This week on the show, guitarist and composer Julian Lage. A child prodigy in his youth, Lage has commanded attention for decades for his guitar prowess—he performed at the GRAMMYs at the tender age of 12—and he's accompanied a truly staggering roster of artists over the years, including John Zorn, Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Yoko Ono, Gary Burton, and more. But on his latest album, the Blue Note release Speak To Me, Lage often presents himself as something of a singer/songwriter—minus the singing, that is. Joined by a five-piece band and producer Joe Henry, Lage careens from jittery free jazz to classic West Coast pop, maintaining a careful flow that feels generous but considered, diverse but not haphazard. This week on Transmissions, he discusses connecting to his musical center, cutting himself some slack, and how Henry helped him know when songs were "done enough." Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on Transmissions? Jeff Tweedy of Wilco joins us for a wide ranging conversation about Solid Sound, his books, and his Jim O'Rourke side project Loose Fur.

Ojai Music Festival Artistic Director Ara Guzelimian brings his customary wisdom, wit and insight into a preview for this year's festival (June 6-9) with renowned pianist and conductor Mitsuko Uchida returning for her third time. Ojai, known for its daring programming, promises to stretch boundaries this year with a mix of familiar music (Haydn, Mozart) and modernists Webern, John Adams and John Zorn. Guzelimian talks about the massive amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into the festival; finding housing for the artists, coordinating the volunteers and interns, the years-long lead time to pull together the talent and the programming, and the audiences who have come to adore the Ojai Music Festival for being the best at what it does in the world. We did not talk about "Baby Reindeer," this year's NFL schedule or Fermat's Last Theorem. Check out the Ojai Music Festival at OjaiFestival.org.

"3/22 as Mass Ritual" Pt. III & Pt. IV have crash-landed on the Independent Cork Board Researchers Union Premium Feed. Subscribe now to access both of these incendiary psychogeographies today: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping Pls support the show by rating & reviewing it on yr podcatcher and/or by making a onetime donation to ParaPower Mapping at: Ko-fi.com/parapowermapping In which we pick our comp paranoid analysis of the Crocus terror attack f a l s e flag, the predictive programming of the Nolan film Tenet, and the 9/11 MegaRitual back up. This time out, we're especially focused on conducting a psychogeographic survey of the 9/11 Mass Ritual Altar & the various architectural landmarks that almost act as psychic conductors, charging the symbolical landscape & shocking the American collective unconscious into the War on Terror mindset. Today, we're talking: the possibility the Crocus attack may have set a detachment of Russian naval warships deploying to the Red Sea in motion & may have impacted the recent Iranian strikes against Israel; David Copperfield's Statue of Liberty vanishing illusion as mimetic recreation of the High Priestess card from the Major Arcana of the Tarot, deepening our contention he presaged 9/11; the symbolism of his two scaffolding towers as the pillars Boaz & Jachin from the Temple of Solomon; the androgynous Statue of Libertas as substitute for Lucifer; it's French Freemasonic sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, who seemingly used his insane brother as his model; the startling similarity to Thomas Lawrence's painting "Satan Summoning his Legions" (1797); the fact that both the construction projects for the WTC & the Statue of Liberty were initiated on Aug. 5th, the symbolical heliacal rising of Sirius, Lucifer's star; Blockbuster CEO John Melk's allegation that Copperfield is Mobbed Up (w/ the Russians); we begin to cohere an allegory for the 9/11 - 3/22 continuum where the two, symmetrical "terror attacks", connected across time & space by invisible symbolical, numerological, & material webs, act as two metaphorical Pillars of Boaz & Jachin, perhaps an elaborate capitalist class magical working attempting to reconsolidate & solidify American hegemony & unipolarity through the equilibrating of these two MegaRituals; we also talk 9/11 predictive programming in Back to the Future Pt. II ... (II signifying the #11 & 9/11), including more Tarot symbolism, specifically the presence of the Hanging Man (Falling Man) on the screen (not to mention a mini Statue of Liberty), when the McFly family are staring at a projection of the World Trade Center on their wall; we talk the Millenium Hilton, the Black Mirror or ashlar directly adjacent to Ground Zero, which was apparently patterned after the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey & served as the Black Mirror onto which the tragic scenes were metaphorically projected... yet another encoded prediction of 9/11 by way of its aesthetic allusion to 2001 (directed by Kubrick, who may have been offed for divulging too much in his Masonry, Illuminati, & Bohemian Grove inspired Eyes Wide Shut) & the Millennium in the name. And if you were doubting it, to bring everything together, goes w/out saying that Christopher Nolan, our Crocus programmer & War on Terror propagandist, was indelibly influenced by Kubrick & recently assisted a 70mm restoration of the classic. There's probably something I'm missing, but I reckon that's sufficient as far as the index is concerned. You'll just have to listen & subscribe. And yeah, I'd highly recommend doing that, because if you think this Part is intriguing, all I can say is Part 4 is probably the high watermark of "3/22 as Mass Ritual" so far... Where things really heat up & our Bain-esque interpretation of the Crocus attack opens up by way of monumental doppelgängers & replica towers in an insane way. Songs: | Ludwig Göransson - "Rainy Night in Talinn" | | John Zorn - "Lucifer Rising" (from IAO: Music in Sacred Light) |

With 20 albums under his own name and his instrumental group Cosmo, the man knows how to make a record. He is a wildly accomplished and successful songwriter. For example in 2003 Harris he received the Grammy Award for Song Of The Year for Norah Jones' breakout hit “Don't Know Why,” from her debut album, Come Away With Me, which has sold almost 30 million copies worldwide. Versions of his songs have been sung by artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Cat Power, Feist, The Black Keys, M. Ward, Brad Mehldau, Bright Eyes, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kandace Springs, and Solomon Burke. I mean WHAT a list that is! Songwriting collaborations have included Maya Hawke, John Zorn, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Papooz, and Lana Del Rey. If you didnt think you knew Jesse, I bet you've heard his writing out there in the known universe of sound and by gosh he's a real potent force. Even after all this success, he is very mild mannered and thoughtful in this nice rambling interview. He's generous with his knowledge and a very easy guy to get along with. I must say I hang my pod head slightly when reflecting on how old this interview is. Like a fine wine, I hope it's benefited from a little time in the digital cellar. Drink in the wisdoms y'all !
